While working, I often end up working with five applications at once. Sometimes multitasking is a necessity, but if you're working off a laptop, it can also be a real annoyance. Research shows that people who multitask a lot are "more susceptible to interference from irrelevant environmental stimuli and from irrelevant representations in memory" (Ophir 2009).
