Music is no exception. For years, MP3′s were the standard for music files. Then that all changed as more extensions were developed and released. Suddenly MP3′s weren’t the only things available. One of the extensions that came around was MP4.

MP3 and MP4 sure sound similar, one might just assume MP4 is the next step for MP3, but that is not the case. In fact, they are rather different, with distinct histories and uses.

Let’s examine the difference between mp3 and mp4 by looking at what each file extension is individually.

MP3

MP3 is short for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3. It is used for audio and uses a compression algorithm that introduces loss, meaning it is a “lossy” compression format. It is one of the most commonly used audio formats available and has been the standard for quite some time.

Uncompressed audio files are rather large, just look at any WAV file. This is because sound is very complex and the translation of it into a digital format that a computer can understand takes a lot of data.

MP3 works to make file sizes smaller by using what is called psychoacoustic models. They get rid of data that most people would not hear because it is too low or high. By doing this, files sizes can be greatly reduced. A 128 kbit/s MP3 file is about 1/11th the size of the corresponding file on an uncompressed CD.

MP4

MP4 is short for MPEG-4 Part 14. MP4 is based on MPEG-4 Part 12 which was in turn based on Apple’s MOV file type. MP4 is a container format, meaning it is used to store audio and/or video data, rather than to code the information. MP4 video and audio can also be streamed over the internet. This is also true of most other modern container formats.

Because MP4 is a container format, it does not have a standard method of coding the audio or video information. Instead, codecs dictate how the audio or video will be coded and possibly compressed. For audio, Advanced Audio Coding, or AAC, is the most popular codec for compressing audio for transfer on the internet.

So What’s the Difference Then?

From these two descriptions, we can note a few major differences. First, MP3 is an audio compression format used to compress and store audio on a computer. MP4 is a media container format used to store media of many possible types on a computer.

Therefore, an MP3 file is limited with regard to the method of compression and can only store audio. MP4 on the other hand, can store video as well as audio. It can even store subtitles for a video file. Also, since MP4 is a container, it can store audio and video that have been compressed in different fashions. In fact, an MP4 file could be audio that has been compressed as an MP3.

These differences make it so that a program that plays an MP3 cannot necessarily play an MP4 and vice versa. The same goes for portable music players, though there are plenty of software options and portable players out there that can play both, for example Winamp.

Both formats have their uses and things that they are better at than the other. Do you have any opinions on what each format does better? Let us know in the comments below.

One of the virtues of having a PSP is the ability to play media on the go. Whether you’re in the car, on an airplane, or just enjoying your coffee break.

If you’ve cracked your PSP, you can get nearly all films working on your device, but otherwise, your movie watching is entirely limited to MP4 files.

Today we’ll have a detailed look at PSP movies, and lay out the different possibilities for obtaining them; download sources and convertion.

Downloading Free Movies For PSP Via Movie Portals

As a rule, the easiest thing to do is find like-minded people who have already gone through all the trouble. There are a number of PSP movie portals to be found on the internet, loaded with PSP-compatible films.

Depending on the content you download and the country you live in, these sites can be completely legal, or punishable by law. If you’re unsure about the content you’re about to download, you should check the laws in your country of residence.

At all times, you should watch out for fake websites offering downloads in exchange for your credit card number.

Daily PSP Video

Daily PSP Video frequently uploads new MP4 clips. These include funny shorts, wicked commercials and music videos. All content on the site ought to be legal, and hardly ever lasts longer than a few minutes.

The files are hosted on a local server, allowing direct download without an account on file sharing websites.

PSP Mafia

PSP Mafia is a warez forum completely dedicated to PSP downloads. This includes, but is not limited to, the latest batch of movies, games and music. Registration is not required, but all downloads are hosted on external file sharing servers, like MegaUpload, Rapidshare, and such.

Most files published on PSP Mafia are copyrighted and thus illegal unless you own the original movie or live in a select few countries. Think twice about what you’re doing before you start downloading free movies for your PSP that might get you into trouble.

Other Sites

Check out the PSP Top 200, an online ranking directory of PSP sites. Here you’ll find the best sites for PSP wallpapers, videos, games and more – as determined by user votes. In this list, you’ll find several more sites offering MP4 clips and warez forums, although most require registration.

Converting Your Existing Files

Of course you could just convert any existing video file to play on your PSP. By default, the device plays MP4 files, similar to the iPod. This means that – apart from the aspect ratio at times – all videos for the iPod will also run the PSP.

There are a ton of articles about this subject on MakeUseOf already, which are definitely worth your time. Check out how to convert all your files with EncodeHD for Windows and how to download and Watch YouTube Videos on Your iPod (in our case: PSP).

Extra: Downloading Free Movies For PSP From Google Video

There are several online video sites that allow for file downloads. Sadly, most of these require a premium membership to do so. One beautiful exception is Google Video. They not only offer all their videos up for download, but have also converted them for playback on iPods and PSPs.

So basically, if your video is to be found on Google Video, you can put it on your PSP in an instant. The easiest way to tackle this is by using Google Video’s advanced search.

Use a custom search inquiry and specify the duration of the video (this comes in handy to filter out related trailers and music videos). Next, be sure to you’ve chosen google.com as the required domain – after all, these are the only videos you’ll be able to download.

If you’ve found a video of your liking, simply take a look at the details in the topright corner of the page. There should be a PSP download link there, saving you a whole lot of trouble!

Ready for a movie on the go? If you know of any other ways to load your PSP up with free movies, or want to ask anything about the techniques discussed above, drop a line in the comments section below.

I have used MANY video converters over the years. DVD to MPG or DVD to AVI and then I needed to convert AVI to WMV and many other combinations. Every time I was forced to find a different application to convert my damn video files! It was pretty annoying.

So when I happed upon VideoSpiritLite and saw that it could convert video files from and to any of these formats, VCD / SVCD / DVD / MPEG / AVI / DivX/ASF / WMV/DAT / SWF / FLV / 3GP / RM / MP4 / MOV, I was pretty happy and I hadn’t even downloaded the application yet.

While I started downloading the LITE version that is free from here I read through its features and it does some really neat stuff, other than converting, like extracting audio or still pictures from video. They do have a PRO version that costs money the only difference between the two products is the ability to edit the videos. Let’s take a look at what we can do with the free version.

The download was 10.9MB and once I downloaded it, I extracted the exe file and started installing. When it was completed in about 45 seconds it launched the application. You will see an info box when the application starts, prompting you to check that you have each of these three codec packs installed. They are K-lite which I wrote about here, Real Alternative and Quick Time.

With these three codec packs you can convert video files to and from any of the above formats for free! If you do not have any of them installed follow their respective links to grab and install them. I had all of them installed on my system so I was good to go.

Once you complete that, you will click close and you will then see the application. It looks like this:

I know, I know, you want to see how to convert a video file”¦ So here we go. Start with Add Task

Then I chose Convert One File and that brings up the Wizard to get your video converted. Just fill out the fields

I chose the type I want to convert my video to, then I chose the input video and it automatically gives you the most reasonable settings but, if you know what you are doing you can go in and modify most settings.

When you are done hit OK. This will not start the conversion yet. The program can do batch processing ““ meaning you can set multiple files to convert and then start it. We will just be doing one today though. After you hit OK you will see a task like so:

Hit Start and you are off”¦

Once the conversion is complete you can view or copy the file from the output folder to where it needs to go. Very easy, and VERY handy!

To use the other features we were talking about it is as simple as going back to Add Task and selecting one of the other options:

You will see options to Split, Join and extract images. You can also convert a DVD. I was not able to figure out how to extract audio only from a video file but their website listed it as a feature. If you figure out how to do it ““ let us know in the comments!
