With the introduction of the Windows Phone platform in 2010, Microsoft unveiled the Metro user interface, designed to make accessing information quick and easy. Rather than litter their new mobile platform with endless rows of icons, Microsoft’s tile-based interface proved that there was another way to make mobile phones functional.

I’m writing this on a Windows PC for one very good reason – Macs are too damn expensive. If only Apple was to lower the price of its full range of Mac computers then everyone could own one. Hell, it could even introduce a new entry-level base model of Mac to bring down the cost of owning a Mac, smashing the price-induced barrier to ownership in the process.

Good news Cut the Rope fans! You are no longer limited to playing your favorite game on your mobile device. Microsoft, together with ZeptoLab and Pixel Lab, has created an HTML5 version of of the popular game, which you can play for free on any major browser. The free game includes 27 levels, and you can play it right now.

Believe it or not, but IE6’s days might be numbered. Microsoft recently announced that starting January, Internet Explorer will be updated to the latest version automatically through Windows updates. IE has been updating through automatic updates for a while, but this always required some additional actions from the user, which sometimes prevented the user from actually updating.

Following the recent OneNote launch for iPad, Microsoft is moving on with another major release – a native SkyDrive app. SkyDrive is Microsoft’s answer to cloud storage services such as iCloud and Dropbox, and they’ve now launched a designated SkyDrive app for both iPhone and Windows Phone. If you’re eagerly anticipating Microsoft Office for iPad, you’d be happy to hear that the process has officially started. Microsoft has released OneNote for iPad, the first in what we can hope will be a long line of Office applications for the iPad. OneNote, which is a part of some versions of Microsoft Office, is a note taking application which combines the use of text, lists, images, videos, audio clips and free drawing.

Microsoft’s Flight Simulator was, up until its discontinuation in 2009, the longest running game franchise in history. The decision to stop production left many fans unhappy. Surprisingly, Redmond actually listened and began development of new flight simulator known as Microsoft Flight.

After yesterday’s new Xbox 360 dashboard launch, Microsoft has now released two mobile apps that each provide differing levels of Xbox LIVE and console interactivity. By far the more advanced of the two is the Xbox Companion for Windows Phone 7, which offers more features than its iOS counterpart.
