As I’ve said before, there’s no shortage of magazine-style content apps for the iPad or other tablets and smartphones. The highly honored Flipboard started it all over a year ago, followed by some awesome competitors including Zite and Pulse News, – plus several others. Not to be left out of the mobile content game, Google has released its own cross-platform reader called Google Currents.

Subscribing to and reading digitally- formatted newspapers and magazines on a tablet device seems to be a perfect fit for both publishers and consumers. With the upcoming release of Amazon’s new Kindle Fire, users of the device will be able to choose from over 400 popular magazines and newspapers, including Vanity Fair, Elle, The Oprah Magazine, Wired, and GQ.

I’ve been a huge fan of magazine style apps ever since the release of Flipboard, followed by Pulse, and then Zite. These apps pull articles from around the net based either upon your specific topical interests.The design, layout and presentation of content in these apps take full advantage of the iPad’s size, orientation, and tactile features. In this article I share some of the best new features in these apps, and explain why you might download one or all of them to your iPad.

The iPad in many ways works best as a digital magazine in which you flip through “pages” of multimedia content. It is magazine style apps like Groovebug and News.me that make the iPad worth having. Though these apps have different purposes, they both share an user interface which invites users to browse and interact with their content.

I really enjoy reading books. I have a Kindle and I use it all the time. But sometimes a book isn’t always what I need. There are times when I have just a couple of minutes to fill, or when I’m somewhat distracted. For those times, a magazine works much better, and while I can read newspapers and magazines on the Kindle, I was intrigued by Zinio which offers paid magazines for Android.
