hronic Dev Team and the iPhone Dev Team have finally released an untethered software jailbreak for all Apple devices running the A4 chip and below. Unfortunately the two current A5 devices, the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, are not currently compatible with this release at this time but the jailbreak will work on the iPhone 4 and 3Gs, iPod Touch 3G and 4G and the original iPad.

As a devout Mac geek, I think there should be a People’s Magazine devoted solely to app developers. Let’s be honest, computer apps are what make our lives easier, not celebrities and cheating spouses. So with that said, I’m honored to release my personal list of my top 10 most used inexpensive and free iOS apps of 2011.

Apple’s popular home music production suite GarageBand has been iOS-friendly on the iPad for a while now, and thanks to last month’s update iPhone and iPod Touch users can finally jam along too. This article is for anyone who has never used GarageBand before, and is not sure what to expect. It’s also for anyone still considering whether the app is worth the token $5 Apple are asking (hint: it is).

iOS 5 added so many features, tweaks and improvements to Apple’s mobile operating system that many inclusions seem to have gone by unannounced. Everyone (including us) has been raving about the new Notification Center, the 4S battery drain feature (!) and the fact that you no longer need iTunes to update, but what else is new?

iOS users, if you haven’t got your free 50GB from Box.net yet, hurry up and do so. A couple of weeks ago, Box.net announced that any iOS user that logs into the Box app from an iOS device will get 50GB of storage, for life. The promotion will only last 50 days, and about 14 of those have already passed, so not much time left for getting this hefty amount of free storage.

Almost a year ago, Apple introduced Find My iPhone, an iOS app that locates your iPhone, through an Apple me.com account. It allows you to either send a display message to your phone, a new passcode that will lock it down, or permanently wipe all of the data. With the introduction of iOS 5, Apple has created a similar app for finding your friends and family members called Find My Friends.

An Apple ID allows you to obtain apps, iTunes downloads and more, which is required to get the full mobile experience if you own an iPhone or iPod Touch. After all, how can you not? One of Apple’s biggest cons is their restrictions. True, their devices are amazing, superbly crafted and work like a charm, but why can’t they play more than one specific video format? Apple, in general, tend not to approve alternative players that allow you to play multiple formats. True, I can jailbreak my iPad and just get VLC, but are there any alternatives that don’t require jailbreaking?

Ever since iOS 4.2 came around, iOS device users have had the option to use AirPlay to stream media from their device to other machines over shared wi-fi. There are several AirPlay clients around for Mac, but being a Windows user I’ve been searching for a solution that will stream media from my iPad to my Windows PC.
