Cats are awesome. We all agree on that. I must admit, though, that even for a cat lover like me, the idea of letting my cats play with my precious iPad seemed a bit crazy. I mean, they have enough toys of their own that don’t cost hundreds of dollars. Well, I’m here to tell you that letting your cats play with iPad cat toys is the most fun you and they are going to have this month.

I am an avid user of Nuance’s Dragon Dictate voice dictation application. Despite the program’s quirks and misrecognitions, I use it because it relieves the stress of typing by hand, and because it also types four to five times faster than I do. The company’s latest release, PaperPort Notes for the iPad may be useful to students and for those who want to use their iOS device for notetaking and annotating documents.

So you’ve programmed your first iOS app and you want to get it uploaded and submitted to the iTunes store? Well, as I found out recently, it’s not quite as easy as it sounds. The latest Xcode 4.2 development tools from Apple have certainly streamlined the process, but it’s still a daunting task your first time around. Apple recently introduced iBooks Author in a live presentation at the Guggenheim in New York. The software is aimed at textbook writers and publishers, but it can just as well be used for producing cookbooks, picture books, interactive fiction novels, how-to books, and the like. iBooks Author looks to be the first consumer-based e-Pub software designed for multimedia books.

While the iPad is mostly a media consumption device for surfing the web, reading e-mails, and watching movies, there are some amazing apps like GarageBand and Keynote apps that make it a really creative tool for producing media. Another such app is Mixel for the iPad – an iOS5 app that truly engages your artistic abilities, or just your willingness to have fun with images, shapes, and letters.

GrowVeg.com, a subscription based online garden planning tool, has recently launched an iPad app based on the service. It costs $9.99 (no subscription) during the introductory period. It’s possibly the best tool I’ve found yet for planning your vegetable plot or allotment, with a fantastic advanced feature set such as square foot gardening and space requirements for individual varieties.

This past week, Amazon made it a little easier for iPad users to access the Kindle Store. You probably already know that Apple enforced a policy earlier last year that prohibited iOS apps from integrating in-app links to third-party web-based stores. Thus, Kindle mobile app users now cannot link to the Kindle Store from within the app itself.

Back when I was younger, my dad used to buy a huge pile of films before each trip. When we got back, we had to wait until it was all developed, placed in little envelopes, and then we could sit down and look at all those pictures for the first time. I remember thinking that taking ~200 photos in a one-week trip is outrageous. These days, I find myself taking 400 photos on a simple day out. I don’t even notice it.
