Sometimes words aren’t the right thing; sometimes all you need is a picture to look at. Whether it is to understand what life is like somewhere in the world, to convey a feeling that words cannot express, or just to soak in some cuteness from the universe, photo blogs can usually do the trick.

Below is a selection of nine awesome blogs and photo sites that offer amazing, priceless images, each in its own way.

ffffound

I recently mentioned ffffound in a post about 10 websites that will help you feel better, but ffffound is much more than a quick pick-me-up. It is a website where a closed (invite-only) group of artistically inclined individuals share photos. Some can be disturbing, some contain nudity, but in a given page I can usually find at least a couple that make me think or feel something.

Ffffound is easy to navigate: Simply hit J to scroll to the next image, and K to scroll to the previous one. No text, no lengthy explanations. Just photos, photos, photos, as far as the eye can see.

Pictory Blog

Unlike ffffound, in Pictory Blog every photo has a story. Rather than a never-ending torrent of photos, it is more of a carefully curated drip. Just a few photos are published every day, and they come from all over the world. Photos are submitted by readers by themes, and the blog ties in tightly with Pictory magazine itself.

For example, check out this gorgeous long exposure scene, which was submitted as part of the “in deep” theme and links to all photos published from that theme. The blog and the magazine both make me feel like taking my Canon 600D and seeing what it can really do.

Boston Globe Big Picture

If there is one website I think of when I think “photo blog”, it’s the Boston Globe’s Big Picture. Every few days a new post goes online, showing a close-up of events from another part of the world. Each photo has an informative description.

The Big Picture is one of my favorite ways to keep up to date on important global events, and really look at them for myself rather than just read what others think about them.

In Focus

The guy who was originally behind The Big Picture, Alan Taylor, left the blog in January 2011. But he did not give up on telling stories using photos. Quite the contrary, he amped up his act and set up shop at In Focus, The Atlantic’s photo blog.

Alan is a pro Web developer, which may explain why In Focus looks so similar to The Big Picture, right down to the “j/k” shortcuts for flipping between photos and the black images that “may contain objectionable content” which you must click to view. If you like The Big Picture, you’ll love In Focus.

Chromasia

The Chromasia blog is a part of Chromasia, two companies run by David and Libby Nightingale. Simply put, the blog contains stunning photos. They are all by David, and can be purchased as prints or cards. The blog is very lean on text – you will have to guess (or make up) the story behind each picture yourself.

One very unique feature is the link that says “show the original” below each image – you can hover your mouse over it and see the non-Photoshopped version of the same photo. It’s as if David really lets you into his studio, and shares what parts the camera and the computer both took in the creation process. Lovely, and very open.

The Sartorialist

This one’s for the ladies: The Sartorialist contains mainly street photos of people, mostly from New York, going around town in spiffy, creative, and interesting wear. That is not all you would find on the blog, however, as can be seen by the photo from Morocco, above. If you like street photography and enjoy fashion, this is one blog to check out.

Pixelcandy

If I ever start a photography blog, I know what I want it to look like – Pixel Candy. This is the personal blog of German photographer Thomas Bonin, and it is absolutely gorgeous. I don’t mean just the photos, either. The format itself is compelling and artistic. It makes your monitor into a picture frame – there are no scroll bars, no comments, no words. Just a single image at any given time, taking up your undivided attention.

There is also an “archives” button that takes you to a long thumbnail view, but the highlight is definitely the single-image view. In a word – wow.

Flickr Blog

The Flickr Blog is interesting because it curates and shares the work of Flickr community members and amateur photographers alongside “official” photos from NASA (above) and other public bodies who join the Flickr Commons from time to time. Flickr is the 900lbs gorilla of the online photo-sharing world, but its blog feels fresh, fun, and not pretentious in any way.

Cute Overload

Cute Overload is right what it says on the tin – adorable pictures, usually of furry, fluffy animals. It may not be the most artistic photo blog on the planet, but it is certainly one of the cuddliest. From flying squirrels to kittens hugging puppies to ducks wearing sandals, Cute Overload has it all.

In Summary

This has been one challenging post. There is such an abundance of excellent photography blogs online sharing priceless images, picking just a handful was tough. But here they are.

Did you like them? Did I miss an important one? Sound off in the comments!

Taking photos is lots of fun, but to get the exact look you want, taking the images right off the camera is often not enough. Corel’s PaintShop Pro X4 is a robust photo editor aimed at both beginners and DSLR enthusiasts. It lets you manage your photos, adjust them, and edit them, all in a friendly interface that supports dual monitors right out of the box (but doesn’t require them).

This week, we’re giving away 25 free copies of PaintShop Pro X4 worth $2475 in total! Let’s take a quick stroll through some of its features!

Managing Your Photos

The image above is a bit small, but you can still see what the Manage view looks like. It lets you browse your system for photos, and add them to a tray for later editing. The Manage view features a tabbed interface, letting you work with several trays in parallel:

This screenshot also shows the Adjust and Edit tabs at the top of the window.

Adjusting Images

Once you’ve selected the images you want to work with, you can switch to the next step in the workflow by clicking the Adjust tab. Here’s a general view of what it looks like (we’ll be zooming in on the different parts in a moment):

At the bottom of the window you can see the tray, and at the top is the image you’re currently adjusting. You can also drag the try down to reduce its size, or even hide it completely. Now, let’s look at the toolbar:

The top of the toolbar shows a histogram of the current photo, as well as the camera settings in which it was taken. At the bottom are some simple settings you can adjust, as well as a “magic button” for suggesting ideal values. But in the buttons in the middle provide some interesting functionality; specifically, let’s look at the Makeover Tool:

This opens up several other tools, such as the “Toothbrush” tool for brightening teeth, the “Suntan” tool for improving skin tone, and others. Here you really start making changes to your photo, but don’t worry: By default, PaintShop Pro preserves an original copy of your photo (and of course, you can always undo your editing operations while you work):

Once you’re happy with your adjustments, it’s time to move on to the next step:

Editing Images

The third and final tab in the PaintShop Pro workflow is called Edit, and its interface looks like this:

There’s a lot to see here; let me take you on a quick tour of just a couple of its features. First is the awesome Time Machine:

I absolutely love this feature. At the bottom you see a timeline of photographic history, extending from 1839 all the way to 1980. Each thumbnail represents the typical look of photos from that era, and each even comes with a lovely explanation of the look’s history. The preview image updates as you select each look, and you can also control its intensity.

The last feature I will be showing is maybe the most important one: the Learning Center. One of the biggest challenges with most image editors is mastering them. PaintShop’s Learning Center helps you find the functions you need amidst the sea of options. It looks like this:

As you select each item, you don’t get a text document explaining it (although there is very good documentation); instead, you get the tool itself, ready to use.

PaintShop Pro is a huge product, and this isn’t even scratching the surface of what it can do. I hope I’ve managed to whet your appetite – if you have a passion for photography, this is one application you should definitely check out!

We’re giving 25 copies of Corel PaintShop Pro this week! Here’s how you can get your hands on a free copy.

Adding Photos

The first step is appropriately titled Add Photos. This is where you pick the images you’d like to process. You can add an entire folder, pick images one by one, or even add images according to a filename wildcard, even if they’re in subfolders (something most applications won’t let you do):

Once you’ve added all the photos you wish to process, BatchPhoto Home shows them in a handy grid, letting you quickly review them and see if there’s anything you want to remove from the set you will be processing. Then, it’s time for step 2 of the wizard:

Adding Filters

Any effect BatchPhoto Home can apply is called a filter. Filters are divided into several categories:

The “All Filters” category may seem overwhelming, but individual categories are often easier to manage. For example, the Touch-Up category lets you quickly apply color and contrast fixes en masse:

Some filters have configuration options. For example, if you want to tilt all of your images at a certain angle, you’d want to use the Rotate filter. Its configuration dialog looks like this:

You also get an instant preview of any modifications you make. You’re not limited to applying just one filter at a time, either. Here I’m fixing the color levels and resizing all images in a folder:

Available Filters

As the filters are at the heart of BatchPhoto Home, let’s take another moment to look at the available effects:

As you can see, not all effects are as simple as resizing or rotating. You can also blur all images, emboss them, or make them resemble an oil painting. There are even four different kinds of annotations:

I won’t exhaust you by going over the whole list of filters; suffice it to say that BatchPhoto Home can do a lot. Moving on!

Setting Up

Before processing all images, there’s one last step:

The Setup step lets you set where you want the processed images to go, what output format to use, and whether or not you want to keep the original images. The Destination drop-down offers some interesting choices:

For example, you could watermark an entire folder of beautiful vacation shots with the words “Taken by (your name), © 2011” and then upload it to Facebook via BatchPhoto itself.

Processing

Once you’ve set all the options, It’s time to stand back and let the computer do its thing:

BatchPhoto Home estimated it would take 49 seconds to process my 26-image folder, and it felt about right. It resized all images and applied a gentle automatic color correction filter to make them look better. As you can see above, it used both CPU cores on my system, for faster execution.

With so much content coming through the Internet, there can hardly ever be enough tools and ways to bookmark and save bits and pieces of online information. While there already exists a few excellent online solutions for bookmarking, including Delicious, SpringPad, and Diigo, two newer sites, Pistashio and Pleeq offer a few unique approaches, although neither is fully featured enough for heavy users of bookmarking sites. But let’s see how they could be used to supplement your existing bookmarking sites.

Image Bookmarking

Pleeq does one simple thing – it allows you to capture and save images you find on the Internet. It’s similar to photo sharing sites, like Flickr, but it’s only for images you want to save from websites you visit.

When you come across an image you want, you click the Pleeq bookmarklet – available for all major browsers – and from there Pleeq will automatically select (using a yellow frame) the image on the page. But here’s where it gets a little tricky. Pleeq selects only the main images on the site. It won’t allow you to select ad images or even thumbnail images–at least that’s my experience when I tried it.

Pleeq will also not allow you to freely put frames around any part of a webpage you want. Also if there are several main images on a page, it will select them all.

To add a selected image to your account, you simply click on it. From there you will be taken to your account where you can enter tags for the image.

Tags are the only way you can categorize and manage images on your account. All your images appear on your photo stream, with your tags listed under “Your Trends” in the left column of the page. As you might expect, you can explore, view, and “Pleeq” (add) images from other Pleeq users to your own image stream, as well as share photos on Twitter and Facebook.

There’s not much else to Pleeq. It might be most useful to graphic and interior designers, photographers, or anyone who just wants to quickly save found images to an online account.

Pistashio

Pistashio is a web and mobile application that is similar to SpringPad. When you open an account, you can use the Pistashio browser bookmarklet to “stash” bookmarks to your account. What Pistashio does a little differently though is provide you with four categories (Eat and Drink, Watch, Read, Listen, See & Do) to manage content.

So of course if you come across a video you want to watch later, you would stash it under “Watch.” Your selected content (URL) gets added to your account, with the option for you to “View This Item” on your Pistashio page.

The “Add Another” button that is part of the pop-up bookmarklet is not for adding another webpage. It’s for adding the current page to another Pistashio category.

Processing and adding web content to your account is simple enough, but the drawback is that you can’t customize the folders for the type of content you want to save. The developers of Pistashio have decided that for you.

You also can’t tag items you add to your account, which means the five categories are the only way to manage your “stuff.” This might be okay at first, but when your account starts overflowing with links and titles, you might have a hard time locating specific items.

Pistashio does give you a few other options that might be helpful, including the ability to star items as your “favorite,” as well as mark an item as “Completed.” This means Pistashio can be used as a sort of task manager for things you need to get done on the net. The web application also includes a feature for reminders, as well sharing items on your social networks.

Both Pistashio and Pleeq could use more features, and no doubt others will be added if the sites catch on. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t useful for either Internet users who don’t already use a bookmark web application or service, or could use them to supplement their existing solutions.

Let us know what you think of them or if a better solution exists.

The main reason why you would want to delete similar images is to save some space on your hard drive. Going through your image folder deleting extra images is too time consuming. Besides, many of the similar images can have different names which makes identifying them almost impossible.

Luckily, there’s a free tool to semi-automate the process.

SimilarImages is a desktop application that finds similar (or duplicate) images on your hard drive among different folders.

The tool has already been mentioned in our round-up of ways to find duplicate image files on a Windows PC but the tool definitely deserves a closer look.

Settings

The best thing about the tool is that it lets you configure the “similarity” threshold with enables you to configure which image pairs should be shown when comparing.

Image file pairs with a comparison value greater than the set threshold are ignored. Some recommended threshold settings include:

To find duplicates(fastest mode): 0 – 10

To scan through photos: about 12

To scan through folders containing scans: 50 – 60

You can also set the folder preferences:

Inclusive Search will only compare files located in the same folder with each other.

Exclusive Search means that only files not contained within the same folder will compared with each other.

Speed

If you have a lot of images and photos on your computer, the first check will take quite a while. However the great thing about the tool is that it keeps its own index of scanned images. Next check will run across its fast Graphics Library. This makes scanning much faster.

The program even keeps track of your not-a-duplicate decisions: if you enable Cache-System, SimilarImages will remember when you indicate that a pair is not a duplicate. When you later check the same folders again it would bring up the same false-positives.

You can access and clear the gallery from the tool “Cache” menu.

(Semi-) Automated Deletion

The tool also aims at making deleting duplicate files faster. Semi-automated deletion feature helps you choose which file to delete from a pair faster: when enabled, one file of a pair will be pre-selected depending on your rules.

For example, you can set to always pre-select a smaller image in a pair or the one with lower resolution or always the newer file. This definitely makes deleting extra images faster!

You can always set the tool to auto-delete a duplicate image in a pair (based on your above settings).

Working with Image Pairs

Once the application is done scanning the specified folders, it shows you the similar image pairs. Each image has a thumbnail, file size, dimensions, last-modified date and other properties. You can delete any of the files or replace one with the other.

The X-icon lets you delete the file.

The TwoFiles-icon lets you swap the file. (Swapping means in this context: The other file will be overwritten with this file, thus the contents of the first file will be kept but with the name of the second file.)

The Clear-icon lets you delete both files.

The Runner-icon lets you delete the file marked for semi-automated deletion.

Looks like a great tool to sort out your stored image files and free up some space. What are your thoughts?

Today’s contender is called Vignette; it’s a commercial application which currently retails for $4 on the Market – not inexpensive for an Android app. But with an average rating of 4.1 out of over 5,400 reviews, it must be doing something right. I have been using it as my primary camera app for the last three weeks or so, and here are some of my thoughts.

Capturing Images

Above you can see two screenshots of the capture interface. Sadly, the way Vignette pulls in camera data doesn’t allow for screenshots of the live preview screen (hence the black background). If you compare it to the Camera360 capture interface, it appears almost spartan. The screenshot on the left shows the selective focus/radial menu feature. When you tap anywhere on the screen, this large circular menu appears around your finger. Drag to the top, and the image will be refocused on that point. Drag to the bottom, and the capture options are shown (screenshot on the right).

But just because the interface is minimalistic, doesn’t mean it isn’t powerful. Unlike Little Photo, the capture stage here isn’t an afterthought. For instance, look at how many different capture modes you get.

Some of these bear explanation. “Blind” is the weirdest one. You get no live preview; the screen just goes black, and you’re supposed to aim your phone as best as you can, and snap an image. Perhaps it’s for times when you’re not supposed to be taking pictures, or for getting spontaneous shots. “Steady shot” tries to figure out when the phone is shaking and moving fast, and waits for you to hold it steady before taking the picture. The others are fairly self-explanatory.

Next, let’s take a look at the camera control options:

This gives you very explicit control over your phone’s camera; not many apps let you set the exposure compensation, for example.

Next, before moving onto post-production, let’s take a look at the file settings screen:

Here you can see one of my favorite features: Vignette can capture full-resolution images, and is beefy enough to apply effects to them. A 5-megapixel image is large (around 2MB). You can also control the quality, folder, and naming convention.

Okay, now let’s capture an image and try applying some effects.

Post-Production

My serious-looking cat, Ivan, will serve as our model for evaluating post-production and effects. Here’s the raw image, captured using Vignette, before applying any effects:

Now, let’s look at the effect interface:

This is one of Vignette’s weakest points. The effects are actually very powerful (and numerous), but there is no instant preview! If you don’t know what a certain effect does, you just have to apply it, go to the image, view it, and go back to apply a different effect. Quite a laborious process really; perhaps Vignette can learn something from Little Photo’s elegant effect interface with its instant live preview and transparent menu.

Interface considerations aside, Vignette offers a boatload of possible effects, neatly sorted into categories:

I decided to go for an over-saturated looks, accentuating Ivan’s eyes:

Another key difference between Vignette and Little Photo is that you can’t apply multiple effects all at once. You need to pick just one; but once you pick it, you can heavily customize it:

For instance, I wanted to add some extra vignetting to the effect I selected, as well as some light leaks. The tweaked result looks like this:

Quite a mild effect, really. Of course, you can also add a frame, out of a staggeringly-rich menu of options:

I went for a 16:9 white rounded frame, and the end result looks like this:

Saving Presets

After you’ve tweaked all the options to death, you might want to save them as a specific preset. If course, Vignette always saves the last values you used, but given the app’s breadth of options you may not want to limit it to just one type of photos. So let’s just save this set of options with a descriptive name:

In the future, I could easily pick out this specific combination (effect and frame) out of the list of favorites:

And what’s even cooler is that Vignette lets me create shortcuts for specific setting combinations right on my homescreen:

So instead of using three different apps (one for HDR, one for “normal” photos and one for Retro-style, say) I could just create three shortcuts to the same app, with different settings.

Bottom Line

Vignette is a powerful, capable, no-nonsense camera app. Its biggest drawback is the lack of a live preview feature for the effect interface. Other than that, it makes for a very solid choice. Stay tuned for more quality camera reviews – and feel free to recommend some of your own in the comments, of course.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/PublicDomainImages02.png">Public Domain refers to material that is ‘publicly available’ and not covered by intellectual property or copyrights. In today’s media, where visual art is abundant, there is a high demand for images, for example for webdesign projects. As a consequence, there are many stock photography websites where artists can sell their photographs or image designs. There are, however, also resources that feature royalty free stock photos that are in the public domain.

Public Domain Pictures

This page is a repository for public domain images. It is maintained solely by its users, who can upload and download images for free. Some photos require a model or property release, when used commercially. This, however, is a general requirement for photos. Material can easily be browsed by various categories, including professional or seasonal photos. Image tags allow an easy search.

The page for each image contains detailed information about the license, the camera used to take it, and links to the artist. The website cleverly supports the creators by offering a premium download and the option to buy the artist a coffee.

Wikimedia Commons

Most images used on Wikipedia are part of the Wikimedia Commons, a database of over 10 million freely usable media files, including public domain images. Recently, for example, the Russian International News Agency has donated 100 historical photographs from their archives. Media files can be surfed by topic, location, type, author, license, and source. Each of these categories has subcategories, to refine the search. You can also search files by tags.

The dedicated page for each features details about the item, including the permission for use and any licenses associated with the file. For most media files you will find that the copyright has simply expired and it has thus moved to the public domain.

Image After

Image After describes itself as the raw base for your creativity. The images provided on this page all underline the same terms of use, which basically are that you can use the images for anything, other than building a page that is in direct competition with Image After.

You can simply search images or use the thorough options, which allows you to sort an image category for example by size, then filter it by color. You can also search based on image tags.

Public Domain Photos

The 5,000 photos and 8,000 free clip arts on this page can be used for any purpose, including commercial. The photos are typically provided in a single high resolution. They are tagged and sorted into categories, offering you two ways to easily find them.

Stock.XCHNG

This resource for free stock photos has been so popular that not only have we mentioned it multiple times on MakeUseOf, it was also recently acquired by Getty Images.

Stock.XCHNG presently contains almost 400,000 photos and many of them are royalty free with no further usage restrictions. You can quickly view the restrictions in the availability field underneath the respective image. Some artists request to be notified or credited, others only require standard restrictions, which are defined by the Stock.XCHNG.

To download material you have to sign up with Stock.XCHNG.

Flickr

Flickr is an obvious resource, yet it is often neglected. Using the advanced search feature, you can search only photos with a Creative Commons license that allows you to use the content commercially and/or modify, adapt, or build upon the content. These two licenses in combination essentially make the image ‘public domain’ in that you can use it for anything. However, the license restriction is that you have to credit the original creator.

If you are looking for very specific images, you should check out the public domain image resources listed on Wikipedia. They feature historical images, as well as visual arts, logos, books, and more.

A site that has been recommended many times in comments to previous articles is morgueFile. Unfortunately, the site was very slow when I tested it, hence it is not properly included in this article.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/0_thme.jpg">Have you ever attempted to take a screenshot of a video? If you’ve ever wanted to show someone the quality of a video (without actually sending them the entire video) or create an Internet meme from a still image in a movie, screenshots can be useful. However, they can be quite difficult to take at times, as traditional methods tend to not always work. Sure, you can use a screenshot program to do the trick, or even VLC player’s built-in option, but if you’re looking to take multiple screenshots this can be tedious. Isn’t there a simpler way to automate the process?

Thumbnail Me offers a solution for those of us who would like to have the ability to automate making thumbnails from videos. With this application, you can create thumbnails of different frames within a video file quickly and easily.

What Is Thumbnail Me?

Thumbnail me is a free and open source thumbnail generator. It’s cross-platform (Windows XP/Vista/7 and Linux, but not Mac…sorry!) and it creates images of videos and provides the option to upload them to ImageShack. Thumbnail Me is coded in C++ and uses the Qt 4.7 library which is why it is capable of running on both Windows and Linux based operating systems.

Thumbnail me also works with a wide range of video types, including AVI, MKV, TS, M2TS, MPEG, MPG, Mp4, VOB, WMV, OGG, 3GP, MOV, FLV, and SWF.

How Do I Use Thumbnail Me?

If you’re ready to get started with Thumbnail Me, the first thing you’re going to want to do is head over to the website and download the application.

Once you install and run the app, you can begin by selecting a source, output folder, etc. Then enter a title and any other information you would like to be included with your file(s).

You can also select an image format for your thumbnail generation. Available formats include JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF. Optionally, you can log in with your ImageShack account for uploading the generated thumbnail images to the service as well.

Thumbnail Me also gives you the option to preview the potential thumbnail image before generating it. When you’re ready to proceed, just click the Launch button. Your video screens will be created instantly.

Conclusion

When taking screenshots of videos the most common use that comes to mind (at least as far as I’m concerned) is torrents. When seeking out a torrent of a video or movie (one that’s being shared legally of course!), it helps to be able to view screen captures of the footage before committing to download it, as these types of files tend to be rather large and can take a long time to download. It’s also a good way to tell if you are downloading the right file, especially if you’re having difficulty remembering the title.

Thumbnail Me is a pretty versatile application that supports a number of different parameters. If you are ever in need of a video screenshot application, Thumbnail Me is a tool that is more than capable in suiting your needs.

Let us know in the comments what you think of it. Or maybe you know of a better alternative?

theCHIVE

theCHIVE is a booming photoblog with many recurring posts, most of which are collections of hilarious, bizarre or otherwise, potentially viral images. Some of these posts include the Daily Afternoon Randomness, which is a highly popular set of either edited or unedited, random and funny pictures, as well as the Daily Morning Awesomeness, another popular post with a variety of either inspiring, cool or sometimes, even jaw-dropping but hilarious images.

There are also other sections on the site, which feature themed posts for certain weekdays, viral videos, as well as, photos of random hot girls or actual female readers of the site that may sometimes be NSFW. The site’s also done pretty well when it comes to donating to readers, or Chivers, in need, but it has also created some Internet hoaxes that have even fooled network shows and other media outlets. Still, theCHIVE is highly addicting and serves a ton of photo galleries that will satisfy the palate of those who are hungry for raw comedy in picture form.

BuzzFeed

BuzzFeed shows viral videos, images, links and general content in real-time, submitted by the staff and users of the site, which was actually started by a cofounder of the Huffington Post. The posts range from human interest stories to celebrity gossip news. You will still catch plenty of funny pictures for different types of humor on this site, as well as interesting and useful information once in a while.

Cracked

Cracked started out as a humor magazine, first released in 1958, and eventually saw itself on the web, continuing the works of the print edition (which was discontinued in 2007). It features lots of compilations (e.g. 8 Historic Symbols That Mean The Opposite Of What You Think), weekly image manipulation contests, and daily contests to allow users to submit their creative captions to bizarre photos.

CollegeHumor

This site has been active for 7+ years and is known for having plenty of helpful articles for college survival, and creating original comedy shorts, like the web series Jake and Amir, and ones even including celebrities, such as Michael C. Hall (the lead of Dexter) and Malin Akerman (from Watchmen). When it comes to funny pictures, CollegeHumor also has picture galleries with lots of bizarre and hilarious images you can’t miss.

FailBlog features lots of hilarious videos and pictures that can either belong in the fail, the more intense “epic fail”, or win categories. The site’s Youtube channel has over a million subscribers and it’s almost like a “America’s Funniest Videos” show for Youtube. Icanhascheezburger is of course, its sister site that shows cat pictures with witty captions in lolspeak, generally for different categories. These “kitteh” videos and images have exploded on the web in the recent years because there’s always a new cat video or photo these days, but it never gets old to see some cute animals doing
innocent and hilarious things.

Founded by comedian and actor Will Ferrell, Funny Or Die, launched this website to feature comedy shorts submitted by users, and sometimes, even original short films starring Ferrell and his colleagues, and sometimes even other actors. Though the site is known for its video content, it also has photo caption contests for users to vote on and funny picture galleries to entertain everyone.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/script2.png">These days, screenshot applications are a dime a dozen, and you can do image editing offline, online and even on your phone. So what’s a new way that you can make use of image editing or screenshot tools that goes beyond just opening up an app and editing images? What if you could integrate image editing directly into your batch jobs or Windows scripts?

If you’re familiar with IrfanView, and think that it’s only a simple image editor and screenshot app, then I invite you to take another look. All of the following script commands can be run from the command prompt, so long as you are working in the directory where IrfanView is installed – which is typically “C:\Program Files(x86)\IrFanView\”. All of the following commands will work from there, or you can include that directory in your system PATH variable so that the “i_view32.exe” command will be recognized no matter where you’re working from.

Running IrfanView Commands

You can find a long list of script commands from within the IrfanView application when you click on Help and search for ”command line options“. I want to point out 10 of the most powerful and useful commands that are available. You can issue these from the command prompt (or from within a Windows Script or Batch file).

Create An Instant Slideshow

The first command I want to show you is one that creates an instant slideshow from a whole bunch of pictures. These can be pictures that you have stored in a directory, or from a list of files defined in a text file. The command is as follows:

"i_view32.exe /slideshow=c:\temp\testpics\*.* /closeslideshow"

The way this works is simple. You could replace ”c:\mypictures\*.*” with “c:\mypics.txt“ if you like if you want to use a text file filled with a list of pictures with the full path for each.

Pictures show up in the center of your screen on a black background. The /closeslideshow parameter tells the app to close automatically after the last picture.

The nice thing about being able to launch a slideshow with one command line is that you can display your slideshow instantly without any work. Just type the command and start scrolling!

Look At All Images In A Directory

The next command is a fast way to take a look at all images within a directory without the need to open up every one of them.

"i_view32.exe c:\temp\testpics /thumbs"

This instantly launches IrfanView in thumbnail mode, and defaults to the directory that you’ve defined.

Resize Lots Of Images At Once

The third command I want to cover is my favorite. One thing that I find annoying and time consuming is resizing a large collection of images.

Instead, just issue this command and you’re done in seconds.

"i_view32.exe c:\temp\testpics\*.jpg /resize=(200,100) /aspectratio /resample /convert=c:\temp\testpics\testsmall\*.png"

Let me break this down. The first part defines your source directory and image type. Then you define the resize parameters. The last part of the command will convert the output images to any format. In seconds, all images are done.

Send Image Collections To The Printer

The fourth command is pretty simple. Want to send a collection of images to your default printer? Just issue the following command.

"i_view32.exe c:\testpics\*.jpg /print"

Take Instant Screenshots With A File Timestamp

Another pretty cool command is one that takes an instant screenshot and saves as a file with a time stamp.

"i_view32.exe /capture=0 /convert=c:\temp\capture_$U(%d%m%Y_%H%M%S).jpg"

The capture=0 could be 1 (current monitor), 2 (foreground window), 3 (client area), 4 (rectangle section), or 5 (launch in capture mode).

Once the full screenshot is saved to file, you can email it or process it using other Windows Scripting or Batch commands. The potential of this command is pretty powerful.

Search For Images Quickly On Your Computer

The sixth command is a fast and easy way to search for images on your computer. Just type:

"i_view32.exe c:\temp\testpics\ /thumbs /filepattern="*.png""

This will open IrfanView in thumbnail mode, using the file pattern that you defined.

Deny User Permissions

The next command I wanted to show you is probably the coolest. Let’s say that you’re writing a Windows Script and you want to display a picture to the user, but you don’t want to let them modify or change the file. You can accomplish this with the following command:

"i_view32.exe c:\test.jpg /hide=7"

The “hide” value is a combination of what parts of the window you want to hide. Just choose 1 (toolbar), 2 (status bar), 4 (menu bar), or 8 (caption). To combine multiple parts of the window, just add the numbers together!

Be careful about using 15, because if you hide everything, the user will have no way of ever closing the window at all.

Output Text Files To A TIF File

Some other wonderfully useful commands include outputting text files to a TIF file:

"i_view32.exe c:\test.jpg /append=c:\test.tif"

Create A Panorama Image

Creating a panorama image from multiple images – 1 is horizontal and 2 is vertical.

"i_view32.exe /panorama=(1,c:\pics\china1.png,c:\pics\china2.png,c:\pics\china3.png)"

Set An Image As Desktop Wallpaper

Finally, the command that could also make for a pretty good practical joke if you use the right photo, the command to set an image as the computer desktop wallpaper background.

"i_view32.exe c:\test.jpg /wall=0"

Set wall equal to 0 for a centered image, 1 to tile it, 2 to stretch it and 3 to resize the image proportionally.

You can set the background image on your PC using this command much faster than the number of clicks it takes to do it otherwise. That’s the beauty of the set of command tools you get through IrfanView – you can process and manipulate images on your PC much faster and more efficiently than would ever be possible using the old point and click approach.

Give a few of these commands a try on your own PC and see if it helps you save a little time and become more productive when dealing with images. Share your thoughts and your own IrfanView command line tips in the comments section below.
