Starting stand-up in his teens, Canadian Russell Peters is of Anglo-Indian origin and as a result his material regularly features humour based on his upbringing. As a Catholic with English heritage he’s perfectly placed to lampoon all manner of racial and religious prejudices and the results are often hilarious.

Like all of the other comics in this list, Peters has done a bit of movie acting as well as releasing various DVDs. Most notably he has appeared in Source Code and New Year’s Eve in 2011.

There is a good chance that Ms Handler’s popularity is as much to do with her stunning good looks as her comic ability, but there’s also a very strong possibility that the majority of her Facebook fans are women.

More likeable than Sarah Silverman, she’s managed to corner the market in vibrator/sex toy gags and her shows are regularly packed out by an audience of women of all ages. She also acts and hosts her own talk show, Chelsea Lately on the E! channel.

The hugely popular British comic is the slightly effete son of a successful comedy scriptwriter (Canadian Ray Cameron). Michael McIntyre has had a successful run in stand-up in the UK since 2008, going on to host his own live stand-up showcase on BBC television and performing sell-out gigs at some of Britain’s biggest venues. He’s also been a judge on Britain’s Got Talent and famously pulled out of a corporate gig for a debt collection company due to the poor treatment he had received while in financial hardship several years earlier.

McIntyre’s style – which can be observed on his various record breaking DVDs – is a combination of skipping across the stage and laughing at himself, with his material basically observational gags on his mundanely suburban life. It’s all in the delivery.

It should come as no surprise that Dane Cook is popular; he has a grungy Wolverine look, great attitude and excellent material.  He’s been performing to massive audiences since around 2000 and has appeared in a long line of films such as Mystery Men, Employee of the Month, Good Luck Chuck, Dan in Real Life and My Best Friend’s Girl.

However he’s no stranger to controversy, having been on the receiving end of every comedian’s worst fear – accusations of plagiarism. Joe Rogan is among the comics to express anger at Cook for misappropriating their routines.

Despite this, however, Dane Cook enjoys a loyal following, many of whom have hit the Facebook “Like” button.

The American comedian, actor, and talk show host spreads his abilities far and wide which might explain how he hits the number one spot of most liked comic on Facebook.

With a sitcom and stand-up career running parallel to a talk show, it’s hardly surprising that the comic – whose routine regularly features material on Mexican American culture – is the most popular in this list. Lopez has of course made a few films, notably The Spy Next Door with Jackie Chan and Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

Surely there is more to the George Lopez phenomenon? Well, he also seems to be a pretty decent guy, so that probably helps (along with the “Likes” he gets from the Spanish-language Facebook).

So what do you think? Are these stand-up comedians hugely overrated? Who would be your number one?

I’m going to assume here a geek boyfriend case type, though of course geek girlfriends have also been known to exist in the wild. Unfortunately, data on these rare creatures is still quite scarce, so we will not discuss them today. It’s tragic that I have to say this, but please don’t take this as 100% serious dating advice, and take a deep breath before posting vile comments about how shockingly generalised and stereotypical this portrayal of geeks is.

A standard issue geek is, by default, able to stop both your microwave oven and the TiVo, from flashing incessantly at you 00:00. His tech-savviness will ensure you stay atop of HDMI, HTML, HTTP and HDTVs with attached HDDs. He’ll certify that your virus definitions and various operating systems are all up to do date, managed via a central house server while-u-wait.

Don’t test his patience though – while the geek boyfriend will be more than happy to tutor you in Java and PHP, he will not appreciate questions about Windows XP. You have an expert at your disposal here, not a replacement search engine. Girls not willing to learn for themselves need not apply for a geek boyfriend – your Facebook will be checked, and you will be Googled!

Logic-Based Functionality

All geeks are pre-supplied with a Logic Interpreter, though they lack the typical Emotional Response Decision Determiner. While they may not be of much use in emotionally troubled times, you can depend on them to make logical decisions when the water level climbs. When the floods come, who would you rather be with? Someone to offer a shoulder to cry on, or a geek who can seek out the nearest high ground, upon which to set up an ad-hoc wifi communications protocol?

It’s likely that at numerous times in your relationship, your geek will become 100% absorbed in a new video game, surrounding himself with chips and dip. Don’t worry about leaving him alone sometime, geeks are expert hunter gatherers - in their prime. They use the power of logic, Google maps, and PayPal, to find and locate daily essentials within their locale. Unlike your typical man who drives around for hours yet ends up buying beer, the geek knows exactly what he needs and what it is near. Don’t feel guilty about using this time to get out more – your geek is simply being hardcore.

Is It Worth it?

Dating a geek will require you to have a wild side, but it’s a dependable and fulfilling ride. You’ll end up understanding an unhealthy number of four letter acronyms, and may even develop a keen interest in programming the next Sims. As long as you can handle long periods of hardcore gaming and more or less no social contact ever, your geek will ultimately serve you well, and leave you never. So what are you waiting for? Windows 8 Beta Simulator is a fun program available for Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and Windows 7 that is designed to give those who are interested a feel for the new Metro UI. True geeks definitely won’t be impressed, but mainstream Windows users will be. The rest of us can laugh at the humor included in Windows 8 Beta Simulator.

Start Menu

Open the Windows 8 Beta Simulator program and you will get a very typical Windows startup animation. You’re then invited to ‘Drag Up To Unlock‘. This simulates the touch capabilities Windows 8 will possess, but isn’t very realistic. The real Windows 8 will use an (optional) picture password system whereby you draw a pre-determined pattern on the screen.

On the next page, bypass the startup screen by clicking ‘Submit‘. There is no need to enter a password and I wouldn’t recommend it just in case there is nefarious reasoning behind the request. To be frank I wouldn’t enter any passwords or sensitive information into Windows 8 Beta Simulator, but then I could just be an over-cynical, untrusting type.

Apps

You’re then taken to the faux Metro UI page where you can explore in a not-very-realistic Windows 8 style.

It’s from here you can access apps in a similar way as you will with the real Windows 8. There is Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and The Weather Channel, essentially just mobile versions of the sites which open up in Google Chrome within the Windows 8 Beta Simulator.

There is also a Piano app (pictured above), a calculator, and other elements which are present in every version of Windows. To be honest none of them are particularly well implemented here, but that’s excusable as they are, after all, only for preview purposes.

Humor

One thing Windows 8 Beta Simulator has in spades is humor. And some of it is actually quite funny. Click on the wrong icon and you’ll get an error message full of typos.

Click through to the next screen and it’s suggested you download Linux, with Bill Gates happily recommending Ubuntu. Many people wouldn’t do so after the latest versions of the Linux distro failed to impress.

Click on ‘Pictures‘ and you’ll find that the images are all plays on Microsoft vs. Apple, with Linux clearly being touted as the best OS. What is an attempt at mimicking the Windows 8 Metro UI was clearly built by Linux advocates.

Lame?

Is Windows 8 Beta Simulator a little lame? In a word, yes. But it’s a small (9MB) unobtrusive download which can easily be uninstalled. It will offer five minutes of fun for anyone keen to get more of a feel for Windows 8 ahead of its release than they can by merely looking at pictures or watching videos.

Windows 8 Beta Simulator isn’t all that useful. It won’t give you a true sense of how it will be to use Windows 8. Anyone wanting to do that will have to download the real beta once Microsoft deems fit to release it. Only people confident and experienced need apply. Which leaves Windows 8 Beta Simulator as a viable though not-very-thrilling alternative for those who don’t fit into that category.

Conclusion

Windows 8 Beta Simulator is for those who don’t want to mess around installing a pre-beta or beta version of an operating system. And for Linux fans looking for a few easy laughs at the saps (of which I am one) who persevere with Windows.

TED

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It’s a collection of amazing talks by smart people about a huge range of subjects, and we’ve mentioned it many times before. The TED website lets you sort videos by various qualities, such as “informative”, “funny”, “beautiful” and others.

A TED talk is typically short, and if you pick the right one, it can be incredibly inspiring. Some will make you laugh outright, while others would make you think (and maybe realize there is plenty of hope in this world).

8tracks

When I need some carefully crafted playlist, 8tracks is where I go. This is a website which lets users create and share their own playlists (not for downloading, but for listening on the site). There are no annoying audio ads, it is completely free, and the mixes can be tagged and sorted in all sorts of ways.

Here’s a search showing mixes tagged happy, sorted by popularity. Or maybe you’re looking for something more mellow, in which case the Winter calm mix shown above might do the trick. Once you find a mix you like, you can bookmark it and come back to it later. 8tracks will shuffle the tracks when you listen to it again; they do this for a legal reason, but I actually like it because it lets me listen to the same mix several times without it getting too predictable.

Now that we’ve got some nice background music, let’s keep exploring.

Reddit

Reddit is an amazing website, curating user content from all over the Web. It’s a close-knit community with its own quirks (we’ve written about it before). It is a huge, sprawling website that can be tricky to start using. Fortunately, our resident Reddit expert, Dave, had several specific sub-reddits to recommend.

Above is just one image I found on the pics sub-reddit. Dave also recommends the Trolling Animals sub-reddit (contains some NSFW text), the funny sub-reddit, and the aww sub-reddit for images that make you go “aww”.

Warning – Reddit is incredibly addictive. Don’t say I didn’t tell you.

The Oatmeal

The Oatmeal is a fantastic collection of comics, lists, and other fun stuff. It was recommended by our editorial overlord, Mark, and I would have to agree. The Oatmeal contains some really geeky comics (the above is from cat vs. Internet), all done up in a very cute, clean style.

We’ve previously included The Oatmeal in a list of 8 Awesome Webcomics You Don’t Want To Miss (it was the header image, even), so if comics is your thing, you may find other goodies on that list (and one more hiding further down this post, too).

Cracked

If you’ve got time for some videos but TED isn’t your thing, you may want to try Cracked. This somewhat-rowdy humor site creates its own videos, such as When Euphemisms Just Make Things Worse. It also features amusing articles and roundups such as 5 Awesome Vehicles for the Extremely Wealthy (And Insane). Cracked isn’t always family-friendly, but it can be pretty funny.

XKCD

xkcd is a web-comic of mythic proportions. If you’re a geek, you probably already know it, but it should definitely be a part of this roundup. In particular, the “Random” button which lets you skip between past strips is important. I could spend hours just clicking that button and reading the tooltips.

xkcd isn’t always good, but it very often is (and sometimes it’s even great). It’s not all “ha-ha” funny, either. Some strips actually make you think.

YouTube (Nyan Cat)

Nyan Cat is awesome, as Justin showed us all. While Justin’s post shows you how you can add Nyan Cat to your progress bars, you can also just watch the video like most people do.

In fact, YouTube has a lot of fun, inspiring and interesting content. I love original music, so when I’m bored or down I sometimes watch Pomplamoose videos, or Julia Nunes (also known as jaaaaaaa).

Ffffound

I wasn’t sure whether or not to include ffffound in this roundup. It’s not a “funny” website – rather it’s a curated image gallery, containing a lot of random, artsy stuff. Most of it is not funny at all, and some of it can even be gloomy or depressing. But almost all of the images are interesting, beautiful, or inspiring.

For me, scrolling through ffffound is like going into a museum exhibition. Lots of art, and the lack of context makes it all that more interesting. Again, this one may not be for everyone, but it inspires me.

Google Image Search

This is another one recommended by Justin. Justin says Google Images can be really good at cheering people up, if you know what to look for. He recommends using links to pictures of animals instead of emoticons. The results are frequently hilarious.

Google Images can also be nice for looking up pictures of stuff that you know will cheer you up (no, I don’t mean porn). For example, if you love cats, you can find about 60 million pictures of cute cat photos.

Bonus: No Website At All

I’d like to end off with a revolutionary idea. If you’re feeling down, I think one of the best things you could possibly do is go outside and take a walk. Yes, I’m serious. Even if it’s really cold outside, just force yourself to get off that chair, put on some warm clothes, and go outside. Don’t even take music with you. Unless you’re living in a really scary neighborhood, taking a few minutes to just stroll outside and look at the world can do wonders.

We really are encroaching on “old internet” territory here, and my first memories of watching these films was in a classroom many years ago. By this point you’ll either already have the line “pork chop sandwiches!” running through your head or you’re staring rather blankly at the screen (don’t worry).

The films that follow earned Eric a cease-and-desist order from Hasbro for using their intellectual property, but it was probably worth it.

Pork Chop Sandwiches

Fenslerfilm’s formula involved taking original clips, removing key aspects, adding hilarious dialogue and sound clips before sewing it all back together again. Pork Chop Sandwiches has to be one of the most famous of all the parodies, and that’s why it’s on this list first.

Interestingly the parodies can often also included additional animation work, or simply basic looping of an animation as is seen in this video.

Body Massage

Depending on your sense of humour, one of funniest aspects of these videos is the inanity contained within. “Body Massage” starring Roadblock is fairly random, and that’s before you even consider that the original PSA must have been advice to stop kids playing with flailing, live electric cables or something.

Skier

A fairly obvious PSA warning children about the dangers of running on ice, Skier involves foul-mouthed kids, a winter accident and one grumpy version of G.I. Joe character Snow Job.

There are very few straight audio-replacement parodies that pack as much punch as this one.

Reggae

What appears to be a “don’t drink the stuff in the medicine cabinet” PSA soon evolves into a reggae sing-along that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever – but who cares, that’s why these parodies are so great.

Those of you who have been wondering for years and years, the lyrics appear to be “Sunshine dey yah, a time fi di bus ride,” in reference to the song “Fun Time Deh Ya” by Night Rider.

Dockside Bars

Some of these parodies make the original PSA messages quite hard to determine. This one, I believe, is “don’t steal your friends bike in front of your friend” which is an odd message to be putting out.

Regardless, things quickly take a downward turn for Johnny who soon learns a few things about his parentage.

I Wanna Get In The Fridge Too

Children! Constantly playing with old refrigerators – am I right? Well, not entirely but that’s what this PSA was originally designed to warn against: the perils of an abandoned fridge.

So how do you make it funny? Reverse the message entirely of course.

Nosebleed

Previously I mentioned Fenslerfilm’s additional animation work that was often carried out to change the tone, voice and of course message delivered in the original film. Sometimes the changes were short but sweet, as seen at the end of this clip.

Japanese

Not only pardoying G.I. Joe but also classic Japanese anime, the audio from this PSA has been completely replaced with Japanese dialogue which has little relevance to what’s actually occurring in the scene.

Basic greetings and phrases are uttered, before the trademark vocal ending is replaced with the Japanese “Jii wara tashi fu sukuru”.

Buzz Lightyear

Opening with an emphatic “I haxx0red your mom’s ass last night!”, this film was clearly meant to deliver some safety tips about wearing a life vest and not falling off boats. That message has not been entirely lost, though it is a lot funnier now.

1, 2, 3, Err…

One of the defining moments of stupid internet humour, this particular film starts out as a baseball match and soon becomes some sort of strange competition between the coach and a student. Additional praise for the outro is also warranted.

Now there are a few terrible movie trailers in a previous Stuff to Watch which focused on bad films, but generally speaking many of those films are entertaining enough to endure. The following trailers will probably not have the desired effect of making you want to part with your cash or your spare time.

C Me Dance (2009) [IMDB]

It’s unlikely many of you have seen or even heard of this movie, and that’s largely because it’s a terrible example of genre-mashing gone wrong. As you can see from the trailer below, what initially begins as a “terminally ill girl can dance the blues away” teaser soon becomes something more… satanic.

Demons! Demons and dancing, ladies and gentlemen. C Me Dance is the ultimate film for the chick flick loving, heel-tapping, closet horror freak who gets off on bad acting and wooden dialogue. Try keeping a straight face at 1.10 when the demon is revealed!

Andy Colby’s Incredible Adventure (1988) [IMDB]

Also released under the name “Andy and the Airwave Rangers”, this production is regarded by many as one of the loopiest kids films of all time. Bad costumes, suspicious late-80s green screening technology, horrible make-up and costuming, and two very lame names make this film really stand out.

I’ve also included another, fan-made trailer by the bad movie buffs over at Everything is Terrible beneath the official version below. Naturally, this version has been cut to accentuate the film’s “unique” approach, and is certainly worth a watch.

Samurai Cop

Released with the tagline “You have the right to remain silent, dead silent”, Samurai Cop is one of the many poorly-acted 80s crime-busting martial arts movies that showed the rest of the world the ugly side of low-budget cinema.

The official trailer doesn’t give too much away, but that’s probably because less-is-more when you’re promoting a bad film and expect people to pay money for it. Much like Andy Colby’s Televised Madness above, I’ve included a recut trailer from Everything is Terrible which actually makes me want to watch the film.

The Ghanaian Collection – 2016 (Parts 1 & 2) / 12:00 (Parts 1, 2 & 3) / Obonsam Besu (Devil May Cry)

These have been doing the rounds online for a while now and no “bad movie trailer” article is complete without them. From the wonders of AGProductions in Ghana come these action-packed CGI-heavy spectacles which really have to be seen to be believed.

I’m not sure whether it’s the repeating announcer, unfathomably bad special effects or the overwhelming speed at which everything on screen takes place that makes these so special, but they’re an absolute must-see!

Jack and Jill (2011, George C. Scott Recut) [IMDB]

Partly written by and starring Adam Sandler (off to a flying start), Jack and Jill is one of those movies that’s just painful to sit down and watch. It could be Adam Sandler, it could be the fact that Al Pacino is involved (why?!) or it could be how well the author of this video illustrated the point.

I’ve cheated a bit here. The video below is indeed the Jack and Jill trailer, in its entirety, except it has been recut and interspersed with footage of George C. Scott’s tearful outburst from the 1979 film Hardcore. The results are wonderful.

Tiptoes (2003) [IMDB]

By far one of the most distasteful productions ever, Tiptoes is a new breed of comedy drama about dwarfism. Matthew McConaughey, dialogue such as “you could have told me your whole family were midgets” and the eventual “will my baby be a dwarf too?” plot are all reasons this movie thoroughly sucks.

Conclusion

Some of these films might be so bad they’re good – Samurai Cop will probably make you laugh more than some comedies – but then we’ve also got some real turkeys including C Me Dance and Tiptoes. It was then and there that I realized there are probably some other crazy things among the virtual classifieds, and fortunately, I found the Best Of section of the site. While there, I found some very strange items on there, so I thought I would share them with you!

Spokane: Bigfoot

When I first saw this ad, it mentioned something about an imaginary friend. Naturally, I figured that’s all it would be – a goofy ad about an imaginary friend seeking real friends. Not exactly… What I did find was an entire ad about Bigfoot looking for love, and it’s definitely worth checking out. (Responding is optional.)

Baltimore: Body Dumping Site

With all the humorous stuff concerning Siri and body disposal, I thought I’d put this one on the list. Someone in Baltimore offered up their backyard for a good body dumping site. Why? Apparently, it’s legal to dump a body in Baltimore, and furthermore, civilians don’t have to report a dead body. Don’t take my word on this, for I’m just reiterating the ad.

Asheville: 1970s Avocado Green Toilet

Oh, the seventies – a time in which home decor was bad and earth tones ruled the day. This porcelain wonder is advertised as a place where you can sit “while leafing through a Reader’s Digest, smoking a cigarette, watching Chico and the Man”. Sounds like a party, indeed.

Washington, D.C.: Actor Needed

I don’t know why I clicked the simple ad request for an actor, but I did. Basically, someone needed an actor to “lose” the family dog so the kids wouldn’t be too hurt. The premise of this was both cruel and genius. I loved it. Also, the fact that it was a $500 gig wasn’t too bad, either.

Minneapolis: MacBook Wanted

Before I got my MacBook, I was willing to do whatever I could to get one. This college kid obviously wanted one really bad for school. However, instead of offering up cash, he opts for the barter system, offering items such as his Robin Hood: Men in Tights DVD and a can of vegetables (your choice!).

Raleigh: Ghost Wanted

This is actually the most recent BOC I found, but it’s different, fresh, and unique. To put things short and sweet, it would appear that a documentary filmmaker is looking to contact a ghost. Ah, but not just any ghost – a ghost who is using the Internet. Brilliant, really.

Orlando: Human Soul

Much like how I was forced to sign away my soul when I began writing for MakeUseOf (I should really start reading contracts more thoroughly – kidding, I love MUO), a fellow right on Craigslist tried to sell his soul on a “Black Friday special”. His purpose of doing this was to simply earn money for Christmas shopping. However, he was also open to bartering. Perhaps the MacBook kid could haven taken a note?

London: Henchmen Needed

Based on the details of this ad, Jacques “The Zapper” Zerapi was in need of a few good henchmen to get his super-villain lifestyle started. With desired traits such as a “flexible moral code” and “being a corrupt government official”, I’m sure there were plenty of applicants available.

New York: Potato Cannon

This… I don’t know what to say about this. Apparently, the fellow was wanting to get rid of his 8-feet long potato cannon because “the neighbors figured out what was happening”. I’d like to know the story behind this, so if any of you want to email him and ask, leave your findings in the comments.

Conclusion

An entrepreneur, republican politician and governor, Mitt Romney is a fairly well-respected figure amongst many Americans. You probably won’t catch him saying “I will force spiders and badgers on the enemy… and get them all to shut up” – right?

This video takes mostly news and political broadcast footage, turns it on its head and forces some fairly hilarious words into poor Mitt’s mouth. Like all of the videos here, the dubbing is very tight indeed. Take it away Mitt!

“Beard With Glue” – James Blunt

Without meaning to sound harsh, James Blunt is a whiney British pop-star who enjoyed limited success a number of years ago with typically soppy love-songs that probably ended up making him millions. All’s fair in love, war and commercial rubbish – right?

Still, we can all sit back and laugh at James in this video as he sings about visions of “drowning in blood” and other inanities. For those of you who care, this is the video to “You’re Beautiful” (with vastly improved lyrics).

“Trick The Bridesmaid” – Barack Obama

I don’t think Barack Obama needs any introduction other than “US president”, though according to this video he has a few other tricks up his sleeve. Not only is this a hilarious parody music video, it’s also catchy and well-produced.

“Morning Dew” – Bruno Mars feat. Jay-Z & Lady Gaga

A mish-mash of pop music reinvigorated for the YouTube generation, Morning Dew takes several videos and unites them under one nonsensical release. The impersonations here are very good, especially Jay-Z who sounds fairly true to life.

One thing that’s worth pointing out is that Lady Gaga’s substituted lyrics aren’t that shocking – it might just be me, but I’d expect her to be coming up with a few of these lines in her own material. Just saying…

“Russian Unicorn” – Michael Buble

In the same style as the James Blunt video above, this mistranslation of Michael Buble’s “Haven’t Met You Yet” is (thankfully) nowhere near as cheesy as the original, whilst retaining genuine “pop song” status. In fact it strikes me as an overly honest depiction of what’s actually occurring on-screen.

By far the best thing about this video is that Michael Buble himself absolutely loves it and describes the guys at BLR as “genius”. Don’t take my word for it, take Michael’s!

“Gang Fight” – Rebecca Black

Probably the most viral video of the last year, Rebecca Black’s Friday made very little sense to many who watched it. Sure, it’s about the weekend – but it’s sung by kids too young to “party” or drive despite what the video suggests.

Gang Fight probably makes just as much sense, and for that reason also went pretty viral. I’m including it here as it’s probably the most well-known BadLipReading video and for good reason too. Fight fight fight fight!
