Grooveshark has had an arduous road when it comes to mobile devices. There was an app available briefly on the iPhone, but Apple pulled it fairly quickly. They moved over to Cydia, and things were great, as long as you owned a jailbroken device. They also had a stint on the Android Marketplace. All the heat from record labels has caused a slew of problems for Grooveshark, but there is no quit in them.

Good news Cut the Rope fans! You are no longer limited to playing your favorite game on your mobile device. Microsoft, together with ZeptoLab and Pixel Lab, has created an HTML5 version of of the popular game, which you can play for free on any major browser. The free game includes 27 levels, and you can play it right now.

In a surprising move (or not so surprising), Adobe is discontinuing its development of Flash plugin for mobile browsers. According to Adobe’s official announcement, they will now focus their efforts on HTML5 instead, as it is “now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively”. They will also continue development of mobile apps based on Adobe AIR and of Flash for desktop.

Recently, Amazon launched their Kindle Cloud Reader, which allows Kindle users to read their books in many of their favorite browsers. However, one browser that was missing from the list was Mozilla Firefox. From day one, the HTML 5 based service supported Google Chrome, and the mobile and desktop version of Safari.

Although Apple attracts a huge market with its computer hardware, portable devices and software, some magazine publishers and content providers are indifferent to paying the company over 30% of their revenue generated from their magazine apps sold in the iTunes Store. Instead, some publishers are pulling their apps and directing readers and subscribers to use their HTML 5 web-based apps.

Dedicated television apps are not a new idea, but HDTV buyers are usually restricted to using only those that ship with their HDTV. Opera today announced a new app store, called the Opera TV Store, which could provide access to a wider variety of software. Using HTML5 as its language of choice, this new app store hopes to give developers access to a market of users that have so far been inaccessible.

Web apps have come a long way in the last few years, and with the dawn of HTML5 even more complex, self-contained games and tools can be created. Smartphone manufacturers have (on the whole) been quick to ensure compatibility with the new standards, ushering in a new breed of palm-sized entertainment.

Flash used to be the king of web animation, but now it’s been slowly abandoned because of the possible future ruler: a combination of HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Even though Adobe is still strongly supporting Flash, it is also beginning to embrace the new alternative. The proof is Edge – the new multi-platform tool from Adobe.

The web as we know it is evolving faster than ever before. As of late, HTML5 is coming into the scene, providing the capability of developing highly interactive web apps without the need for the proprietary Flash. Instead, all a user needs is a supported, modern web browser, and they’ll be able to enjoy the best of what the web has to offer.
