Search engine optimization. It’s a controversial topic these days. Lots of professionals have their own opinions about what constitutes a good SEO strategy. Some people insist that a solid keyword strategy is the only thing that matters, while other SEO pundits lambast the “keyword” contingent. I’ve been involved in this field long enough now that there are three solid truths in the SEO field, at least as of today.

The first is that keyword phrases do matter and will always matter, to an extent. Search engines will always need the ability to extract relevant and important information from the web. The text of your site makes up the content that must get judged, one way or the other. The last two truths are just as important. The first is that social networking also drives relevance. If you aren’t taking advantage of that, then you’re letting your site stagnate. The second is that links still matter as well.

Evaluating Your True SEO Ranking

With those three truths in mind, I’m going to help you judge your own site’s accurate SEO ranking. I did not call it “PR” ranking, or pagerank, because that is truly an artifact of the past. There is a new sort of “ranking” that you should use based on all factors that search engines take into account. In this article, I’m going to help you determine the true SEO value of your site.

Make Sure You List Highly For Important Keywords

You should already have a list of about 5 to 10 critical keywords that you want to perform well for in Google. They should be focused on the content of your site.

Take those keyword phrases and search the Google, Bing and Yahoo search engines for them. File through the listings and determine what position you land in. But beware of false rankings when you are logged in, such as shown here.

When I’m logged into Google, I rank #2 for the search term “secret societies”. That’s a false positive. If I log out, I find that I actually list somewhere around #10 for that term. However, when logged out of Google, conducting a search for “top secret cults” shows that I really do list second, so that’s an accurate result for that term.

Go through each of your keywords and then give it a score based on the following formula that I developed. (x is placement position)

(100/x) * .60 = Google score
(100/x) * .20 = Bing Score
(100/x) * .20 = Yahoo score

If you rank 10th in Google, 5th in Yahoo and 4th in Bing, then your “keyword” score is 6 + 4 + 5 = 15

Anything above 10 is good, 30 is very good, 50 is excellent and above 70 is top-tier.

Determining Your Incoming Links

There are countless tools that help you determine your number of backlinks. I’ve covered Traffic Travis previously, and a while back Linda covered a number of sites that will show you your incoming link count. A couple of my favorites are Domain-Pop, as shown here -

- or Backlink Watch, as shown below. This is one of my favorites for a quick overview of my most recent stats for incoming links.

By far, my favorite tool – because you can get the most accurate picture of incoming links to your site – is definitely Google Webmaster Tools.

Take a look at the “Total Links” and also pay attention to “How your data is linked“. Those links can show you what people value about your site and feel compelled to link to.

Judge Your Influence On Social Networks

Today, more than ever, social networks are playing a giant part in how search engines judge you. Only a year or so ago, only Twitter and Facebook were key. More recently, Google Plus is critical. So, to determine your value to search engines, you need to evaluate your site’s value on the social networks. Mahendra wrote a great article listing some great tools for this. My favorite is Klout.

I love Kout because it incorporates everything – Twitter, Facebook, Google + and more – add whatever networks you want to use, or leave any of them out.

You can use your Klout score as a baseline to work on improving your overall social networking score. The higher you can move this score, the higher you will rank in the search engines, guaranteed.

Of course, if you really love Facebook, you need to have a Facebook Page for your site, and so you should be using Facebook Insights.

It’s the best way to see what impact different posts have on how many people link or share your articles – so use it, study it, and learn from it.

Check The Number Of Broken Links

Once again, the single best tool to analyze your site links is Google Webmaster Tools. Just click on “Diagnostics” and “Crawl errors” to see a report of Google crawler errors. Most of these will be broken links – 404 not found errors. You should work hard to get this list to zero.

The number of broken links listed here is another factor for your overall “SEO Ranking”. For every broken link, you are hurting your search engine value significantly. A part of any good SEO regimen is going back constantly and removing or fixing broken links. Do this, and you’ll see your search engine placements skyrocket.

There are many issues that determine your value and relevance to search engines – far too many to list in this one article. However, the four factors that I’ve listed here are the four issues that will have the greatest affect on your SEO quality over any other factor out there. Just improve any one of these factors, and you’ll almost immediately notice results (or at least the next time your site gets crawled).

So give it a try and let us know if you were able to improve your standings in the search engines. Do you have any other tips for readers in addition to these? Share your own thoughts and insights in the comments section below.

Google Analytics is the most popular website analytics platform for website owners today. There are certainly others to choose from, such as the three open source tools Danny wrote about, the free analytics tools Rich wrote about, or the eight live analytics tools that Dave covered. Regardless, no other analytics tool has seen the adoption rate that Google Analytics has.

As Yaara recently described in a news update, Google has released a new and improved Google Analytics platform with a whole slew of brand new features. In this article, I’m going to dive more deeply into some of those new features.

New Features Of Google Analytics

At first, you’ll notice only very minor differences with the layout of the left navigation menu. For the most part, the overall traffic numbers and display looks the same as usual. To discover the differences, you need to start exploring the left menu by expanding each of the items. What you’ll notice is that not only are the choices simpler and more straightforward, there are also more choices available.

By expanding the Visitors area, you’ll notice a few interesting choices like demographics, behavior, and technology. I really like the behavior area, where you can get a closer look at visitor behaviors like new vs. returning visitors, how often visitors return and how much visitors engage with the site.

Clicking on “Frequency & Recency“, you’ll see a graphical layout of how many times your visitors have visited your page and how frequently.

Under “Engagement“, you can see another graphical layout of pageviews versus visit duration. This can show you some interesting things about how your visitors behave. For example, it might show that while a large majority of your visitors come to the site for a short visit, your return visitors (higher pageviews) actually come back and hang out quite a bit longer.

Under Visitor Technology, you can get a very detailed graphical breakdown of all of the browsers or networks that your visitors are using to visit your website. This lets you optimize your site for the best display in the browser family that the majority of your visitors use.

Click on Social Action under your Visitors section, and you’ll get a breakdown of how many people have been taking advantage of social network interactions on your website through services like Google +. As you can see, I’ve only just added Google + functionality to my own website, so activity has just started. If you’ve been using Google + on your site for a while, you’ll have a lot more information in your Google Analytics account for Social activity.

Under Visitors, there’s also a Mobile Devices area where you can see a breakdown of what mobile devices your visitors use to visit your site, and what percentage of your visitors come from mobile devices. Obviously, if you have a very big number here, you’re going to want to make sure that your site is well optimized for mobile browsers, or that you offer a mobile-optimized version of your site.

One of the coolest new features can be found under Visitors, when you click on “Visitors Flow“. This display shows you an impressive graphical view of the traffic flow through your site. You can select starting traffic points from what geographic region visitors are from, the source of traffic, the browser visitors use and much more.

What’s amazing about this feature is that you can see how different types of people navigate through your site – you can see what topics and what pages matter more to people from different countries, people that come from Google search vs. Facebook, or people that are running Chrome vs. Firefox. You can pick up some fascinating patterns about your readership from this flowchart.

You can check out how well your search engine optimization is working by clicking on Traffic Sources, Search Engine Optimization, and then “Queries“.

Here, you can see exactly what search terms are drawing in the most traffic to your site. If you’ve done your SEO optimizing well, then you should see those targeted search terms showing up here. You’ll see how many impressions your site is getting from the search engine listings, which can be pretty impressive (pun intended) in many cases.

Other really cool areas of Analytics includes “Site Speed” under Content, where you can see the page load time for the bulk of your visitors.

You want to see most of your load falling under 0 to 6 seconds. If you’re seeing higher percentages with longer page loads, consider upgrading your web hosting.

The absolute coolest area of Analytics, in my opinion, is “In-Page Analytics” under “Content“. This will show you a display of your webpage with click-through rates placed on top of your webpage.

If you change the display to color-coded bubbles, you can see where the highest click-through rates are by looking for the red percentages. This can really help you see what types of content your visitors are most interested in, and what areas of your page do the best job getting your visitors to click and explore the site further.

The new Google Analytics does an excellent job giving you much more information about the behavior and the characteristics of your readership. This can serve to help you lay out your site and produce content that is more valuable and interesting for your visitors.

If you’re an existing Analytics user, check out the new features that are available in the new version. If you haven’t ever used Analytics, now may be an excellent time to try it out. Give it a roll and let us know what you think about the new improvements in the comments section below.

Following their other products, Google is officially rolling out the new Google Analytics, complete with a whole new look and some interesting new features. This change has been happening over the past few weeks, and some of you may have already seen the change beginning to happen in your Analytics. Over the next few weeks, Google will gradually make the new look the default to all users, so if you’re still using the old version, make the most of it because it won’t be around for long.

The most prominent change to Analytics is, of course, the looks. The new look keeps the orange and blue theme, but is much smoother and a lot less cluttered. The menus have become much easier to use, and a convenient “Home” tab has been added.

Among the new features you will find Real-Time Analytics, which lets you view what is happening on your website while it’s happening, new and sophisticated ways to track conversions and their causes, upgraded mobile analytics and the ability to create separate dashboards for different products.

Some features, such as Flow Visualization, which illustrates user navigation, are still rolling out, and you might not see it on your dashboard yet. But don’t worry, it’s all coming. Just switch to the new version if you haven’t done so, and give some of the new features a spin.

After you’ve done so, let us know in the comments what you think of them, and of the update in general.

If you operate your own website, analytic software can be crucial in order to track exactly how well your site is doing. Without this software, you can do whatever you want with your site, but you will never know if it is getting more visitors, aside from the amount of comments. When you look at the possible options you have for analytic software, the most popular choice is Google Analytics. However, if you’re not a fan of Google or its Analytics package, there’s no need to fear. There are still a handful of options for you to try out.

If you also care about the correctness of the code so that visitors can maintain their privacy, great open source solutions exist as well.

Grape Web Statistics

Grape Web Statistics is a fairly simple piece of analytics software. Grape is most appealing to those who find Google’s offering to be too much or overwhelming and would like to keep things simple. Grape doesn’t offer a whole lot out of the box, though if you are a good HTML and PHP developer you may be able to extend the software to meet your own unique needs.

Grape shows you some of the most commonly sought-after statistics for your site. This includes the number of visitors, the top referrers, and the operating system of each visitor. These statistics can be shown at hourly, daily, monthly, and annual levels. Specific dates can be chosen as well.

One negative side to Grape is that a new version hasn’t been released in over a year, though I suppose that isn’t so important if it wants to stay minimal in the amount of features it offers.

Open Web Analytics

Open Web Analytics comes in spot number 2, although it isn’t far away from first place. OWA, as the website calls it, packs a much more powerful punch compared to Grape simply by its massive feature set. The software also features a great user interface that organizes all the different statistics that can be shown. There are lots of different statistics that can be viewed, such as the browser type, geo-location, top pages, search terms, search engines, and ad performance.

OWA also offers some nice visual graphs to represent certain statistics. I found that on all pages, a graph of the current number of visitors for the past few days is shown. I’m not sure if this can be turned off or modified. However, one can tell that much effort was put into making the information visually pleasing and easy to understand. The graphs are also clean, aside from some random entries here and there, such as “Default Browser” when listing the browser types or “Not Set” for geo-location.

Piwik Web Analytics

So who took the top prize? That goes to Piwik, my personal favorite for open source web analytics tools. Piwik currently has the most extensive feature set out of the three, and is under heavy active development. One of the things Piwik is best at is integration with any site. There are many, many different frameworks such as WordPress and Joomla! that have plugins for Piwik, and for any other sites you can simply add a self-generated snippet of code to your footer.

Piwik also offers easy upgrade paths. It will notify you whenever there is an update, which can be installed with a single button, much like WordPress’s style of updating. This makes keeping up with the latest features and bugfixes super easy.

Even better, Piwik lets you set goals so you can actively try to reach those goals. There are many different parameters that you can set, so the sky’s the limit!

Conclusion

Indeed, there are some good choices available when it comes to open source web analytics tools. Which tool you choose is up to you and your needs. Either way, they are available and ready to make you more productive.

If you’re running a blog, Google Analytics may be the best single tool in your arsenal of traffic-generating weapons. Available for free, and capable of providing excellent data, Analytics is a must-have.

The basic site isn’t well optimized for mobile devices however, which can be frustrating for webmasters who want to keep tabs on sites without dragging around a laptop. Thankfully, some Android developers have come to the rescue with apps specifically designed to make Analytics easy to use on a smartphone.

gAnalytics [2.2+]

Free is always great, but sometimes it comes at the price of functionality. This is particularly true of apps that are compatible with Google Analytics. Several options (including Droid Analytics, below) are paid, and that isn’t going to be attractive to everyone.

Fortunately, the free price tag on gAnalytics doesn’t require much in the way of sacrifice from users. This app packs most of the information that you’ll need including visitors, popular keywords, referring sites, and more. Better yet, it does so with an interface which is actually more practical and professional than that of Droid Analytics.

The downside? Despite many interface advantages, switching between different timeframes when looking at site data is a pain in the butt, and Droid Analytics can provide more data at once. These are not massive flaws, however, and I suspect most users will be happy with what gAnalytics offers.

Droid Analytics [1.1+]

This rather clunky app receives isn’t hard to use, but receives no praise for its appearance. It looks and feels like a java program for a computer that’s been crammed on to a small screen, and while it’s as quick as any other app, it seems outdated.

If you can get over the appearance, however, you’ll find a wonderful app that provides a lot of Google Analytics data. What I most about this app is how easy it is to view data from different time periods. You can view the last seven days, the last 30 days, or any other time period by touching the clock icon. It’s also possible to break down data by different increments. For example, you can see the number of visitors you’ve received by day, by week, or by year.

Despite what I like about this app, and the fact I’ll probably use it instead of gAnalytics in the future, I think the current price of $3.47 is steep considering the lack of attention to detail. The developer really should slap a new coat of paint on it.

There is one advantage to be old and crusty, however – this app will work on Android versions as old as 1.1.

Simple Analytics Widget [2.1+]

Both of the above apps are suitable for most users, but they are missing one important feature. A widget. I mean, come on. Every Android app needs a widget!

Thankfully there are some available, and among them, I prefer Simple Analytics Widget. The reasons are quite simple. First, the widget is the best looking of the bunch, presenting information in simple but attractive bold font. Second, the widget can present several different types of data (such as visits a day, page views per day, or bounce rate).

To add icing to this tasty widget cake, you’ll find the widget is easy to use, as it connects straight to your selected Google account rather than asking for a specific username/password combination.

Conclusion

While there are other Google Analytics apps for Android available, I find these to be the best options, and the ones that I prefer using when I monitor the activity of my own blog. Do you think I’m wrong? Feel free to share your favorites in the comments!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo22.png">Most SEO experts out there have come to recognize how humbling the field of search engine optimization can be. Just when you put together a series of rules or techniques that work well, Google up and turns the world upside down. The nice thing about optimizing a site however is that most of the really important core issues still matter, even after Google makes any change – whether it’s big or small.

How well your site will do really still depends on a wide variety of factors, but most importantly your keyword usage, the quality of your site – including number of broken links and well-written content, and also toward the top of the list are backlinks from other high quality sites.

So you believe that you’re doing all of this, but you’re really not sure. Sure, some of your pages rank toward the top of Google listings, but how do you know how well your site is optimized as a whole? Obviously, one way to do it is to create a checklist and go through your site one page at a time. Of course, if you’re like me and hate that kind of grunt work, then you’ll be as pleased as I was to discover SEO Panel.

Installing SEO Panel

What’s SEO Panel? It’s a high-quality, free PHP-based app that you can use to audit your entire website, or even your competitor’s websites, for the leading SEO issues that most experts agree really matter. This is somewhat similar to Traffic Travis, another SEO tool that I’ve reviewed.

Before you can start using the app, you’re going to need a web server where you can install it. On my case, I installed it on my locally installed Xampp web server, but you can download and copy the files to the public area of any web server that has PHP and MySQL installed and enabled.

Make sure that the config/sp-config.php file and the tmp directory is writable by everyone. Then, just open up a browser and go to the /seopanel/install/ directory. In my case it would be http://localhost/seopanel/install/

When you run the installation, it will check your server to make sure everything it needs is installed and enabled. Odds are that you may receive the “CURL Support” error above, especially if you’ve set up your own web server. CURL is usually easy enough to enable just by going to the php.ini file on your web server’s PHP installation and removing the “;” from the .dll file extension.

Now when you launch the install script, you should see the following screen.

Don’t forget to change permissions on /config/sp-config.php so that not everybody has write permission. In the next step, you’ll be in the admin panel. The default login is spadmin/spadmin.

The first step, once you’re in the SEO Panel is to set up the websites that you want to monitor. Just click to add a new website and fill in the details.

Once you’re done, you’ll see all of your configured and activated websites in the Website Manager area. You can see just from the picture above how many features this application has, including reports, SEO analysis tools, keyword reports and more.

When you click on the reports manager, you’ll have the opportunity to request a full analysis of your system based on criteria like current search engine rank, search engine saturization, and number of quality backlinks to your website.

You’ll get a really good overview of the websites you want to follow when you click on the “SEO Panel” link on the main menu bar. The account summary that shows up will provide current search engine ranks, backlinks, and indexed pages.

Next, click on “Keyword Position Checker” and you’ll discover a list of tools that make it a lot easier to determine whether your keyword efforts are currently good enough. One of my favorite tools is the keyword “position” checker. Just choose the search engine you want to use, type in a keyword or phrase that you’d like your site to rank highly for, and click Proceed.

Just scroll down the listings, and if you see any highlighted entries, then that’s a page from the site that you’re currently monitoring with the SEO tool. This is a fast and easy way to see if you rank at all well for the topics you are trying to focus on with your site.

Another invaluable tool in this PHP program is the “Auditing” area. This section lets you run audits against any website, and will reveal statistics about any site. Just choose the audit types you want to perform and let the system do the work for you.

When you do a full audit, be prepared to wait a long time as SEO Panel actually crawls through the entire site to analyze and report back with the relevant data. Each page gets its own line of statistics, and you’ll be able to clearly see which pages on your site have the lowest scores and need the most work.

A lot of people get pretty frustrated when it comes to SEO. It seems inconceivable that certain techniques will actually increase your ranking, but it’s true. The SEO Panel app gives you a place to turn when you just don’t know where your site stands. Looking closely at the reports and audits will show you where your site is really bleeding, and how to go about giving it SEO first aid.

So give SEO Panel a try and see if it gives you any new insight into how you can improve your website. Share your experiences with it in the comments section below.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/analytics.gif" />The number of visitors that a website receives is an important statistic for many. Google Analytics, the widely-used website analytics platform, and alternatives like Webalizer or AWStats are great for long-term stats, but what if you want to see how many visitors are on your website right now?

Real-time visitor tracking tools have been popping up ever since 2007 or so, and now there are many choices in the live website analytics arena. Let’s go over some of the choices and see what makes them stand apart from the others.

Amung.us

Amung.us is one of the older live-click tracking services. MakeUseOf actually used their widget for a number of years – it was perfect for tracking who was on the site live, which articles were currently receiving a lot of visitors and historical viewer tracking. The Amung.us service is listed in our directory here.

If you need a simple widget for your website, Amung.us is perfect for this use. They do not include detailed tracking in their free service, but sometimes you simply don’t need it. Also, they allow you to place a map on your website or blog detailing where in the world people are coming from.

Clicktale

Clicktale is more of a full-featured analytics package. They focus on taking an individual user session and allow you, as the site administrator, to “play back” the visit from their first page to the next. Clicktale also offers some more detailed statistics such as time on the page, conversion rates, and other features seen in packages like Google Analytics.

Another cool feature that Clicktale has (limited in the free plans) is the ability to see a heat-map over your website. This shows where a user moves their mouse on your webpages and what they actually clicked on. This is a great insight tool to get an idea of how real users interact on your page.

Clicktale has a free plan that includes 400 recorded pageviews per month and a limited playback of visits. To get some of the more interesting features, they do require that you upgrade to a paid plan.

Clicky

Clicky is a very strong, yet very simple live analytics package. We’ve featured it here on MakeUseOf before, and their offering has only grown in size and value.

They make a very compelling alternative to Google Analytics. Their free version includes many of the same features as GA, but also adds real-time tracking into the mix. The user interface is clean and simple and they also have mobile versions for iPhone or Android.

As with many of the other tracking platforms, there is a limited free version and also a pay version which includes more page views and features. The free version limits are 3,000 daily page views and one site. Clicky is definitely an option if you are looking for live website analytics at a good price.

Feedjit

A popular service with bloggers is Feedjit. Feedjit offers live analytics but is more focused on the “here and now”. It will show you who has visited your page in real time, displayed in a widget on your site or blog. It displays various statistics about the visitor, including where they are visiting from.

Part of the free version of the widget is that it is supported by ads. This allows them to bring the widget to you for free and also an advertising platform for your own website or company (if you pay for it). This could be considered a good or bad part of the service depending on your viewpoint.

GoSquared

GoSquared is “Analytics without the Analysis” and is a beautiful way to visualize visitors to your website in real-time. A live demo of GoSquared is available here.

The free plan offers one site and 10,000 monthly page views and paid plans start at $10 a month.

Piwik

Piwik is an open-source alternative to Google Analytics, with other features such as live visitor tracking built-in. For the crowd who don’t like Google having access to all of their data, Piwik is a great self-hosted option.

As with many open source alternatives, there is some legwork to be done to get Piwik set up correctly. Look for detailed directions in an upcoming MakeUseOf article by yours truly.

Piwik is absolutely free, and if you are willing to get your hands dirty, the source code is available to all for the ultimate customization.

Reinvigorate

Reinvigorate offers many of the analytics offered above. What makes them stand apart is that they do offer heat-maps along with the normal statistics, and also they have a desktop client that can be made to ‘ding’ every time someone visits your site.

Reinvigorate offers a free plan for up to 100k page views and paid plans starting at $10 a month.

Woopra

Woopra offers live stats on your website and is a very popular alernative to Google Analytics. Their free account (also known as Basic) gives you your website stats served alongside an ad.

Woopra has several features which set them apart from the pack. You can add a live-chat widget onto your site and chat with your visitors, and they also have an excellent API via which you can integrate your own statistics and metrics into.

Who’s The Best?

All of the above options are great solutions to the live-tracking analytics question. I think Woopra and Clicky are the two top analytics platforms as far as overall comprehensive features and ease of use. Amung.us or Feedjit are excellent if you run a small blog and just want to add simple live tracking to your pages. Finally, Piwik is the ultimate customizable solution – look for a howto on setting it up on your website in the coming weeks.

Do you have another option to see how many visitors are on your website? Be sure to let us know below!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/polarisicon.jpg" />Those of you that have followed along with MakeUseOf for a while know that we often cover various methods of making use of Google Analytics information. Google Analytics is easy to focus on because it’s one of the few free webmaster tools available on the Internet that is not only fully functional with a free account, but it also provides APIs so that other applications can “plug into” your data.

I previously covered one desktop app called Trakkboard that lets you view Analytics data from a variety of accounts, which is really nice. Mark also previously covered an Adobe AIR Analytics reporting tool as well. Tim also covered probably one of the coolest Analytics plugins for WordPress that I’ve ever seen.

Using Trakkboard for a while, I found that the lack of English on a few of the settings, and the malfunctioning charts for certain selections was a little annoying, so I went out in search of any other good desktop Google Analytics tools out there. I finally came across an awesome Adobe AIR app called Polaris.

Setting Up Polaris With Google Analytics

Just like any other Google Analytics app out there, you do have to provide your login and password to the app in order to connect to your Analytics account. Once you do log in, within just seconds you’ll have instant access to all of your Analytics data through this app, only in a much cleaner and aesthetically pleasing interface.

If you have multiple profiles under your account, it’s not a problem at all. Just click the dropdown box and choose the profile that you’d like to work with. In the middle of dealing with any screen, you can always immediately change profiles on-the-fly by clicking on the green profile folder in the menu bar.

Graphs and Charts

Within Polaris, you have access to those important charts that you’re constantly logging into Google Analytics to check. Now you can just let this app run on your desktop and you’ll never need to log in again. The dashboard itself displays six graphs in one convenient display – visits, pageviews, pages per visit, bounce rate, avg. time on site and the percentage of new visitors arriving at your site.

If you want to see a more detailed view of your Analytics data, click on the “Dashboard” button and a dropdown box lets you select all of the following windows that I’m going to walk you through below. The first is a more detailed view of your daily visitor trend.

The next view is called the “Map Overlay”. This is an awesome layered map view where Polaris extracts location details about your visitors and overlays that data onto a map of the world. The cool part of this view is that the concentration of hits are color coded from a faint green for a few hits to a deep red color for a strong concentration of visitors.

The next view is also a chart that most Google Analytics users are very familiar with – the breakdown of your traffic sources by visits, pageviews or how much time visitors spend on the site. This information can really help you target your content in a way that increases pageviews or encourages visitors to stay on your site just a little bit longer.

Other Information and Data

Beyond the visual graphs and visitor numbers, you can also use Polaris to access more specific information about your traffic such as your top referring sites, as shown here. This view really helps to show how well you’re optimizing your site, and what websites you really should frequent to draw in even more visitors to your sit

Additionally, you can access your top content. This is always important to check constantly, so that you know what your visitors are most interested in. This can change constantly, so if you make sure Polaris launches when you first start your computer every day, you can be certain that you’ll always be aware of the latest trends for your website.

Of course, the top keywords that draw in your visitors is critical information as well, and also available from Polaris.

Unlike other free Google Analytics apps, you aren’t limited to a certain time range with Polaris. Simply click on the date in the center menu item at the top, and move the bottom slider to the date that you want, and the side sliders to adjust the range.

As you can see, Polaris is a fully-functional window into your Google Analytics data, and definitely gives the competitors a run for their money. Since it runs on Adobe AIR, it will run on most operating systems that run AIR. So take Polaris for a spin and enjoy having access to your Analytics data without even opening a web browser.

Do you like Polaris? Are there other Google Analytics apps that you like better? Share your own opinions in the comments section below.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/booktext.jpg">Sometimes, one of the hardest things about blogging is coming up with new topics. Maybe you feel like you’ve covered every topic under the sun, or you’re just having writers block. Well, if you’re wondering how to identify keywords for new article ideas, one excellent method you can use is to thoroughly analyze your best performing existing titles.

If you’ve written five hundred articles and the only three articles you wrote on “mobile gaming” are all receiving the most traffic at your blog, then you know it’s a topic your visitors are hungry for.

One way that you can easily identify these sort of trends, especially when you have hundreds and hundreds of articles on your site, is to go through your top performing 50 to 200 article titles and identify certain patterns.

These patterns will be groups of two to five words that repeat with a certain frequency. In this article, I’m going to do an analysis of the keywords on one of my private blogs to show how you can come up with cool article topic ideas that you know your visitors will be interested in.

How to Identify Keywords From Top Performing Articles

The first step in doing this analysis is to extract your articles that are attracting the most organic traffic. Organic traffic is the incoming traffic that you’re collecting from search engine queries.

First, log into your Google Analytics account and under “Content” click on “Content by Title.”

This sorts all of your pages with the most traffic from the most visited page down to the least. Now, this information itself is valuable, because often just by glancing down through titles you may recognize an obvious trend and see a topic that your readers seem particularly interested in.

The genre of this particular website, a conspiracy theory site about top secret projects and spying, is such a fringe topic that article titles run the gamut. With such a site, I really need a good way to dig more deeply and identify word trends that indicate a common topic that my readers like. First, scroll to the bottom of the list and change the display from 10 to 50 titles.

Once this page lists all of your top 50 titles, all you have to do is export the list to Excel so that you can easily pluck out the titles for analysis. You can do this export by scrolling back up to the top of the screen and clicking on “Export” and “CSV for Excel.”

This exports all 50 titles, as well as their statistics, directly into an Excel spreadsheet. Once the sheet is open, you can scroll down to the titles, highlight all 50 and copy the entire list to your clipboard (either right-click and copy or use the Excel copy function).

Paste this list into your favorite text editor. For me, it’s Notepad – but make sure to choose one that has a good “search/replace” feature so that you can clean up the titles for better analysis.

Clean Up The Titles

Once you’ve got the list of titles in text format in your text editor, it’s in the perfect format for identifying word frequencies. However, before you can do a good analysis, you need to clean up the titles. Google Analytics usually appends the name of the website to each title, so you’re going to have to clean this up. You can do this in any standard text editor using the Search and Replace feature.

In this case, I’ve copied the bit of text at the end of one of my titles that contains the unique text “| Top Secret Writers” and using the Replace feature in Notepad, I’m replacing that text with nothing. When you click “Replace All” it’ll clean up your entire list. Since the text includes the symbol “|” at the beginning, your titles that simply feature your website name won’t be modified.

Now that you have a nice, clean list of your top 50 titles. By the way, if you have hundreds or thousands of articles on your site, you may actually want to select 100 to 200 of the top titles, rather than just the top 50. In my case, my site is so small and new that the top 50 should provide a good enough snapshot.

Conduct The Word Frequency Analysis

Highlight your list of cleaned-up titles, and then head on over to the free online text analysis tool at Online-Utility. I’ve found that while there are a lot of “text analysis” tools available online, this one is one of the best because it breaks down keyword patterns into phrases that are one to five words in length. Just paste your list of titles into the large text field in the tool.

Click on “Process text” and within less than thirty seconds, you’ll receive a full report of word and phrase patterns recognized throughout your list of titles.

Unless you have a lot of titles on your site, the longer phrases don’t always identify clear standout leaders in terms of occurrences, but often even on smaller sites the single word analysis section will reveal some hidden gems.

As you can see, the list above tells me that aside from the common words “and”, “of” and “the” – the titles where I use the words “ufo”, “secret”, “alien” and “cia” are by far the most popular of all of my titles. Focusing on those particular topics, I will be catering to what my readers clearly enjoy reading about on my blog.

Did you try this analysis on your own blog, and if so, what did you learn? Do you know any other cool keyword analysis tools? Share your insight in the comments section below.

And there are some easy ways you can use those statistics, like Tim’s article on the Analytics WordPress plugin, or the desktop app called TrakkBoard where you can monitor multiple Analytics accounts at once.

Today, I’d like to cover a change that took place over the past year or so where Google integrated Adsense information into Google Analytics. You use Adsense in your websites and your feeds, so wouldn’t it be nice to get a glimpse of what sort of performance your Google Ads are doing each time you monitor your Google Analytics account? If you didn’t know that you could do this, I’m going to show you how to integrate Adsense with Analytics, and what some of those reports look like.

How To Integrate Adsense Into Analytics

Before you can take a look at your Google Ad performance alongside your traffic data, you need to enable the feed between Adsense and Analytics. You can do so with a single click. When you’re logged into Adsense and viewing your report overview, just click the link to integrate Adsense with your Analytics account.

The next step is to tell Adsense which data you’d like to “marry” into Analytics. If you’ve only used one Adsense account for all of your websites, this is easy because there won’t be any choice. However, if you’ve organized your Adsense into “channels” for each domain, as I’ve done, this is where you can tell Adsense to only integrate the Adsense numbers for one channel into the Analytics account that you have set up for that domain.

In this example, I’m telling Adsense to use the ad information for RyanDube.com and feed it into my Analytics account set up for ryandube.com. Once you go through this simple 3 step “wizard,” you’re good to go. It may take a little while for the data feed to start flowing, but you’ll see the Adsense option in your Google Analytics account immediately.

Adsense Data You Can View In Google Analytics

Once you’ve enabled this feature, the information you can use to compare to your overall site traffic is pretty cool. You can see Adsense data within Analytics when you click on the Content section. The menu option shows up simply as “AdSense.”

Once you dropdown the Adsense item, you can see how much information your account feeds into Analytics.

Now that you know where to view Adsense information within Analytics, let’s take a look at what that information means to you. The first overview will show you your overall Adsense income for the domain. You can see your daily revenue over time – which offers some pretty cool insight into how certain events affected your income on that day.

Did you do certain work on a certain day? Did you cover a particular topic or publish a very popular article on that day? You can monitor your daily revenue to keep track of how your ad income was affected by those events. If a certain topic consistently seems to draw better clickthrough rates for your ads and generates higher income, doesn’t it make sense to focus more of your efforts on that topic? It will sure affect your bottom line if you do.

While the graphical display shows you the trend, if you click on “Top Adsense Content” you can actual see the details – exactly which of your pages are producing the most income for you?

You can see not only revenue, but how many ads were clicked, click-through rates and more. If you really want to beef up the monetization of your website through Google Ads, this is the place where you can get the best optimization data.

This information doesn’t stop with articles, you can also click on Top AdSense Referrers to see which incoming links you receive that seems to generate a better ad clickthrough rate.

Obviously, it would make sense to establish stronger ties with those partner websites that are sending you traffic which results in your strongest ad revenue. Often this simply represents the “type” of visitor that site is sending you. Folks coming in from Google may not be the type of visitors that are as likely to click on your particular ads as people coming from StumbleUpon. If you want to improve your bottom line, focus on those things that are revealed by the AdSense data as working for you.

Finally, another very cool piece of information is when you click on AdSense Trending. This display shows you how much specific Adsense variables have changed on a particular day.

For example, it will show you that on Saturday, your AdSense revenue increased by 3.74 percent. Or, you can change the variable to AdSense CTR and learn that on Monday your clickthrough rate shot through the roof. This is a great way to test certain changes to your site and then review how that change affected your user behaviors. I saw this just recently on one of my websites, where changing my entire site them increased clickthrough rates by almost 50%.
