If you are a fan of the online automation service site, If This Then That (IFTTT), you might be interested to know about the recent posting of two new Gmail actions which add to the growing collection of actions on the site. The two new actions consist of an "Any new mail" trigger which fires every time any new email arrives, and another Gmail automation, "New starred email," triggered anytime you star a specified type of email.

Email was never made for large file attachments. Many email servers won’t even accept emails with attachments over 10 MB in size. To send large files via email, you’ll need to upload your email attachments to a file storage and sharing service. The email recipient will receive a link they can click to download the email attachment, allowing you to send gigabytes of attachments without clogging up inboxes and running into size limits.

In a recent poll we held here at MakeUseOf, we found that over 75% of you already use Gmail’s new compose. By reading that poll’s comments, I’ve also gathered that while many of you are using the new compose, there are things many of you find annoying. The most common complaint, and one which I agree with wholeheartedly, is the increased amount of clicking, hovering and clicking this new interface requires.

Google Talk is Google's own desktop instant messaging program. You can log in using your Google account. And if you are on Gmail, you have already been using Google Talk, possibly without noticing. With the Google Talk desktop application, you can stay in touch with your contacts and continue the conversation after logging out of Gmail. The tool supports text chat, file transfers, voice calls and voicemail.

Threaded conversations and smart labels were a start. The former really helped to have end to end conversations, and the later came into it later as an email organizational tool. But what if you want to add something more to a Gmail conversation? For instance, a note or an annotation that tells you. Gmail still lacks a notes feature for tagging a specific email with some extra information that’s of help to you as a future reference.

Attaching big files to Gmail just got a whole lot easier with a new Google Drive feature that integrates right into Gmail. If you’re already using Google Drive, and you probably are now that Google Docs has become Google Drive, you will now be able to attach files stored on your Google Drive to any email with just one click and without leaving Gmail.

Thanks to a recent Gmail search update, it is now easier than ever before to search for messages by size and date. For example, you can now search for larger:5m to yield all messages that have attachments larger than 5MB. Better yet, you can combine this with the older_than operator and search for size:5m older_than:1y, thus yielding a list of all messages older than a year and larger than 5MB.

Gmail's new compose mode is simple, it's clean, and it's a great sign that Google isn't done improving Gmail yet. Back in July Google acquired Sparrow, a brilliant email client for Mac and iOS users. Their team joined the Gmail team, and if this is a sign of things to come from that I have to say: everyone wins.
