Everyone loves animated GIFs. In the early days of the Internet, when we were all stuck with 56K connections, GIFs were one of the only ways to watch things with movement without having to wait hours on end for videos to buffer. Even today, they still serve an important purpose. After a major UFC event, one of the first things I do is watch GIFs of some of the crazy techniques over and over while at work.

Now, with GifBoom you can easily create your own custom GIF images right on your iPhone. Did your friend do something stupid that you would like to see in motion? Did your dog do something cute that you want immortalized in GIF form? Perhaps you saw something funny that you think would be great shared on the Internet? Fear not, GifBoom has you covered.

Set Up

Setting up the app is a breeze. First, head over to the app store and download the <del datetime="2011-09-09T20:45:55+00:00">free</del> application (editor’s note – this app is now 99 cents).

Since GifBoom is basically a GIF sharing social network, you do have to make an account to use the service. Setting up an account is super easy and only takes about 30 seconds. Just click sign up at the bottom of the screen, enter a username, email and password, and you will be ready to start producing your very own animated GIFs.

Using The App

Once you have your account all ready to go, it is time to start making some GIFs. You can either choose a video, a bunch of pictures, or use the camera in the app to rapid fire images to make your new animated GIF.

If you choose to go with a video on your phone, the app will process the video and break it down into a bunch of still images that will go on to become your GIF. You are allowed 16 images, so look through the video and find which images you would like to string together into an animation. If you choose to go with photos on your phone, the app will open your photo library and, just like with videos, you choose up to 16 images for your GIF.

After you select the images, the app will show you a preview and ask you to choose a frame-rate. Move the slider up and down until the GIF looks like the speed you want and click “next.” On the next screen you are given the option to enter a caption for your newly crafted GIF. This screen is also where you choose where you would like to share the image. They have Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Email, and sharing via MMS. MMS sharing copies the image to your clipboard for later pasting. Sharing is easy; just turn the slider on for whatever service you wish to share with and enter your username and password. Wait a few seconds for the application to upload the GIF and you will be good to go.

The process for making a GIF with new pictures is a little different from the other two, but still easy. You choose the frame rate before you start filming. This will determine how long the GIF is. It is still only 16 images, so obviously the faster the frame-rate, the shorter the GIF will be. Once you finish filming the GIF, the process for sharing it is the same as before.

All of your animated GIFs are stored on your phone, and on their server. To access a GIF for later, simply go to your profile, click on the GIF in question and click the three dots on the bottom right of the screen. The pop up menu will give you the option to copy the GIFs URL.

You can also copy your created GIFs to a computer, but not through the photo syncing feature since the Photo App on iPhone does not support animated GIFs. You simply connect your device to your computer and use iTunes file sharing to copy the images from your phone to your computer. For complete directions on iTunes file sharing check out this article.

Conclusion

GifBoom is a really cool app for turning your boring old photos and videos into nice animated GIFs and then easily sharing those GIF images with all your friends. If you are looking for an easy way to create GIFs while on the move I think this app is the way to go.

There are often times when you wish you could turn a video into a GIF file. Maybe you want to pass a short clip around the office without getting anyone fired for looking at YouTube. Perhaps you want to create an awesome icon for an avatar. Or maybe you want to create the perfect GIF for your Tumblr. There are lots of reasons to want to try it, but most people just don’t realise how easy it is.

There are plenty of free tools you can use online to help you convert a YouTube clip to a GIF animation. It’s really very easy to do and you’ll be making plenty of your own clips in no time at all.

1. Download The YouTube Clip

There are many, many ways to download YouTube clips. Here at MakeUseOf we’ve written about our favourites time and time again, including MiniTube, Gmedia, The Man With No Life, DownThemAll and BYTubeD, KeepVid, Kiss YouTube and V Downloader. You can even jump straight to step two and use Zamzar to do both steps if you like.

My current favourite YouTube downloader is Easy YouTube Video Downloader for Firefox (also known as Best Video Downloader), so I’ll talk you through the whole process using that extension.

The clip I’ll grab is by Cyriak, called Cows & Cows & Cows. We’ll get the video in FLV format because it’s easy to convert to a GIF. The YouTube downloader does all of this for you, really. If you don’t like this extension or you don’t use Firefox, just try one of the many other options mentioned above. They’re all equally easy to use.

2. Convert The FLV Movie File To A GIF Animation

This is another simple process which can be done using free online tools. The easiest online tools for the job are Zamzar and GifNinja.

Both Zamzar and GifNinja actually allow you to upload your FLV movie file and convert it using their web interface. There’s no need to download any program at all. Just tell it which file to convert, and in Zamzar’s case tell it what format to convert to and which email address to send the download link to.

In fact, you can even use Zamzar to fetch the video from YouTube directly, just by plugging in the URL. This will save you from downloading and uploading the file, but since many people have good reasons for choosing their favourite downloader, such as quality, wanting to download whole playlists at a time or wanting to keep a copy for themselves, that step has been left in.

Now just wait and GifNinja or Zamzar will create your GIF animation. Zamzar will email you the link to your GIF download, which normally only takes a few minutes.

More on Video Conversion

We love to convert video here at MakeUseOf, so plenty has been written on the subject before. Here’s some other ideas you might like to try in order to convert to different formats.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/00_series.jpg">If a picture paints a thousand words, then a picture animation would paint millions of words. One of the first things that people did in the early days of the Internet was to try to put moving images on the web, and long before the era of Flash, the only way to put animations on the web was to use GIF images.

Today, GIF is not as popular as it used to be, but that doesn’t mean that it’s already useless. The format can still come in handy whenever you need small sized moving images, something like an animated avatar (for Twitter, for example), a revolving logo for your website, or even a photo slideshow.

There are several image editors that could help you build GIF images. But if you need a quick tool while you are away from your home computer, web tools would be easier to access. Recently, I stumbled upon two web tools that could help you create and manipulate simple GIF animations - Picasion and Playgif.

Creating GIF Animations

Basically, a GIF animation is a set of images merged into one and displayed one by one in a continuous loop. So, to create one GIF animation, you’ll need several base images.

Creating a GIF animation using Picasion is very easy. Prepare a set of images that you want to convert to GIF and add them one by one using the “Choose File” button. Even though there are only three buttons available by default, you can add more than three images if you need to by clicking on the “Add one more picture” link.

You can choose the image size you want from the “Size” drop down list.

You can also choose the speed of the animation.

In my experiment, I created five pictures to build the animation. I used an image editor to write a word while taking one screenshot of the window every time I added a letter. Then I added the screenshots to Picasion.

If you want to build the animation using web images, you can choose the “URL” link and write down the addresses in the field provided.

It’s also possible to add images from your computer’s built-in webcam shots. Choose the “Webcam” link, then allow Picasion to access the camera and microphone by clicking on the radio button next to “Allow“.

Then click the “Capture” button to take the shots. Set the timer if you need time to prepare before your picture is taken.

After you’ve put all of your images in place, scroll down to the lower part of the pane and click the “Create animation” button.

Picasion will then process the images and show you the result, along with the option to share it via MySpace, Facebook, and/or Twitter.

Picasion will also provide you with links related to the animation, including HTML code that you can put on your website. There’s also the link to download the animation to your computer.

I copied the HTML code from the GIF animation that I created and pasted it into this post. Here’s the result.

I know my example is very simple, but you can create more complex GIF animations by putting more images in one file. The possibilities of the kind of GIF animation you can create is limited only by your imagination.

Play With GIF

If you want to make your GIF animation more movie-like, you can try Playgif. This web tool will add a play/pause button to your GIF, along with options to adjust the speed, and to play the animation in reverse.

You need to provide Playgif with the weblink to the GIF and click “Start gif player“. You can put the direct link from Picasion here.

After generating the frames, Playgif will display your animation with all the playing options. Unfortunately, this modified GIF is only viewable on the Playgif site. You can’t download it or embed it to other locations.

Do you still use GIF animations? How do you build the GIFs and where do you use them? Please share your methods using the comments below.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/moviegif6.jpg">The animated .GIF is a strange form of expression. It is only twenty or thirty frames, completely devoid of sound, repeating in an endless loop. Yet there is something intoxicating about an animated .GIF, like staring into the eyes of a hypnotist.

Creating your own animated .GIF from a movie can be a lot of fun. Animated .GIF images can be used as an avatar on a website or can be distributed among your friends. And while there are many animated .GIF images already made, creating your own will give you a distinct, unique image.

The weapon of choice in this tutorial is Windows Movie Maker. We won’t be using Windows Movie Maker to turn the file into a .GIF image, but we’ll be using it to edit the movie file so it can be easily turned into an animated movie .GIF image.

Step 1: Loading The Movie

First, we need to load the movie file. In this example I am going to use an episode of Top Gear, the famous British car show. In this episode Jeremy Clarkson tests the Ford Fiesta by driving it through a shopping mall with a Corvette in hot pursuit.

First we need to drop the movie file into Windows Movie Maker so that we can begin editing. You can do this by dragging and dropping the movie file into Windows Movie Maker. Alternative, you can go to File > Import Into Collections. Once you find the file you can select it to import the file. It will appear in the Collection area.

Now that we have the file in the Collection area, we also need to place it into the timeline below so that we can edit the file. Simpy drag-and-drop the file from the Collection area to the timeline at the bottom of the Windows Movie Maker window. This will allow us to begin editing the file down.

Step 2: Editing The Movie

An animated .GIF is only a tiny fraction of a movie. The loop on an animated .GIF usually lasts from a couple seconds to ten seconds. The reason for this is that animated movie .GIF files actually can become very large very quickly. Each frame is like a separate image. Animated .GIF images above twenty or thirty frames in size can exceed one megabyte in file size. This isn’t ideal, so you’ll need to trim down the movie to the specific part you want to make an animation of.

To do this you’ll need to crop the movie file. First, you’ll probably need to zoom out on the timeline. You can do this using the magnifying glass icons just above the timeline. Now, click on left edge of the timeline and drag to just before the part of the film you want to turn into an animated .GIF.

You will know that you are cropping the image when the cursor turn into a red double-sided arrow. Now go to the right side of the timeline and do the same thing, cropping the movie file until just after the part of the film you want to animate.

Now that we have this smaller clip, we’ll want to use the magnifying tool to zoom in. Now you simply need to start cropping the movie further until you’ve found the exact part of the movie that you want to animate. Remember, if you crop too much you can just undo your crop by pressing Ctrl+Z. Your finished, cropped video shouldn’t be much more than ten seconds in length in order to keep the file size down.

Step 3: Exporting The File & Making The Animated .GIF

Now that we have the video cropped down to a manageable size we need to export it.

On the left of Windows Movie Maker you will see the Save to my computer option under the Finish Movie section. Click on that option. You will be asked to name your file on the first screen – do so and click Next. Now you need to decide what type of movie you want to create.

In order to keep file size down our animated movie .GIF can’t be a very large image. To achieve this I recommend using the Video for Pocket PC setting. This creates a video file with a size of 208 x 160 pixels, which is small enough to work as an animated .GIF.

Now that we have the video, we need to convert the file into a .GIF. This is one thing which Windows Movie Maker doesn’t do for us, but there are websites which will. Using the instruction in the Makeuseof GIF Ninja tutorial, you’ll easily be able to convert the video file into an animated .GIF.

The results? Well, here is what I ended up with.

Cool? Now you can make your own animated .GIF from any movie you want! Share your productions in the comments.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/gimp.png" />Animated GIF images are a great way to attract attention to certain parts of your site, create simple but effective banner ads, or simply have fun. Memorializing your favorite scenes from movies in GIF format is a riot.

However, there are not very many good GIF editing programs available for free. Those which are available for free usually have some pretty hefty strings attached, such automatically placing a watermark on the image or requiring that the image size be below some ridiculous standard. Those animated .GIF programs which are truly free are usually web-based GIF maker apps, not tools which exist on your computer.

Luckily there is a powerful tool for creating animated .GIF images which doesn’t cost a dime. GIMP, the popular free image editing software, has the ability to create animated GIFs. Below are step-by-step instructions on how to make animated GIF images on GIMP.

Step 1: Starting Your GIF

In this tutorial, we are going to create a simple .GIF image in which we’ll have the words “This is how you make a .GIF image” appear in succession one by one.

To start go to File and then click on New. Create an image which is 300 pixels wide and 100 pixels high.

Now, go to the Text Tool in the toolbox. It is represented by the large ‘A’ icon on the right side of the GIMP Toolbox.

Click in the upper-right corner of the image. This should open a small window called GIMP text editor. Type in the word “This.”

Now go to Layer and then click on Duplicate Layer. Use the text editor again to include the word “is” after “This.” Duplicate the layer again and then type the new word, “how.” Continue this process until you have the entire sentence “This is how you make a .GIF image.” Don’t worry about having the words perfectly aligned – this is just a test, after all.

Step 2: Creating the Animation

You now have a .GIF image with numerous layers. This is the basis of what you need to create an animated .GIF with GIMP, but you’re not quite there yet. Right now, you just have an image which will display the text all at once.

First, let’s view the basic animation of your .GIF by going to Filters > Animation > Playback. Click on Play in the upper left. The animated .GIF will play back fairly rapidly, looking something like this.

That’s way too fast for most .GIF images, so you will probably want to play with the timing a bit. There are two ways which you can do this.

Step 3: Manipulating Your .GIF

The easier way to change the timing is when you actually create your .GIF image. Go to File and then Save As. When you are prompted for a file name make sure you add .gif to the end of the file name. You will be prompted with a box which will ask if you’d like to flatten the layers in the image or convert them to animation. Click on the option to convert them to animation.

The next screen will have an option called Delay between frames where unspecified and then a number field. Change this field from 100 to 400 and then click Save. You will end up with something like this.

Much easier to read, isn’t it?

However, you may decide that you’d like to change the length of each frame of the .GIF individually. If you decide to do this you’ll need to edit the layers

Go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Layers. This will open the Layers window. Each individual layer in the .GIF file will be shown here. Right click on the first layer, which is called This, and click on Edit Layer Attributes. Type in the text (100ms) after the word ‘This’, then click Okay.

Do this for each layer after words, but increase the number by 100 each time. Now save the file as a .GIF, and make sure that the layers are saved as animation. You’ll end up with a .GIF where each word appears slower than the one prior, such as below.

These are the basics you need to know in order to create .GIF images with GIMP. By manipulating the timing of each layer, you can create very intricate .GIF images which are customized to fit your needs. Forget dedicated .GIF programs – GIMP can handle your animation needs without a problem.

Questions? As usual, let them loose in the comments.

gifninja is a website that lets you create animated gifs quickly and easily. You can either create an animated gif from individual images or by uploading a video. gifninja also provides you with a nice utility to split an animated gif into separate images.

Convert video to animated gif

To convert a video to an animated gif, you first need to make sure that you make the video as short as possible. You can do this with one of many online video editing tools or with Windows Movie Maker (if you are on Windows of course). According to gifninja, the video file has to be about 4 seconds long, so you should try to shorten it to about that length.

Once you’ve edited your movie and cut it down to size, visit the page to convert your video to gif. Click the Browse button, navigate to where your video file is, and select it. If you wish, you can make your picture available to the public and available to be rated. Then just click on make my gif!

Make animated gifs from images

If you have a series of images you wish to animate, you can make an animated gif from images. You can upload the files individually (up to five) or you can zip them up and upload them in a single file. If you choose to upload them as a zip, you will have to append numbers to the filenames in the sequence of the animation (car1.jpg, car2.jpg, car3.jpg, etc”¦).

Selecting the file(s) to upload is very much the same as uploading a video. However, there is an additional option to set the speed of the animation. There is a preview of an animated dog that demonstrates the selected speed. But don’t worry, if you’re not happy with the speed of the animation after you’ve uploaded it, you can adjust it later.

After you click the make my gif! button, you are taken to a preview page. The preview page allows you to keep the image as it is, adjust the speed, or start all over again. Once you have the animation set to the desired speed, click Yes ““ it’s fantastic! to proceed to the next step.

After you’ve selected the desired speed for your animation, you select the filename for your animated gif. Again, you can make the image publicly available if you wish. You can also enter the filename for the image as well as tags to help other people find your image. Once you have everything set the way you want, click the Save gif button.

gifninja also has a cool feature to split animated images into separate images. Just upload the file and click the split my gif! button. The individual images will appear right on the page. You can also download all the images at once with a zip file generated by gifninja.

gifninja could hardly make it easier to create animated gifs online. What other free online and offline tools do you use to create animated gifs?

You know you have always wanted to have an animated avatar of yourself to put on your blog, website, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, or upload on your Gravatar account but never figured out an easy way to do it - well that is, until now.

You know you have always wanted to create an animated avatar of yourself to put on your blog, website, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, or upload to your Gravatar account but you’ve never figured out an easy way to do it – well that is, until now.

Cool Webcam Avatars lets you create animated gif avatars directly from your webcam using their website and you do not have to sign up for an account or install any software.

There are 4 easy steps to create animated avatar and it takes about 2 to 3 minutes from start to finish.

There are lots of things you can record, not just your face, so be creative. You need to take into account that the finished avatar will show up larger on the screen than the smaller size some sites normally require. That means you need to record a clear picture so it is easy to see if a site you use it on resizes it.

Step 1: Go to Cool Webcam Avatars and click the Record Your Avatar! button at the top of the screen.

Step 2: A screen will appear which asks if this site can use your webcam. Click Allow.

Step 3: Click Start. You only have about 2 seconds to record but you can try again if you don’t like the results.

Step 4: When you like your results click Download Avatar! On the next page you can right-click on the avatar to save it to your computer. You do not have to signup for an account but make sure you save your avatar before you leave the page because it will not be saved unless you create an account.

Here is the avatar I created. I actually used the picture of my “evil” cat that is on my cell phone. Pretty cool, huh?

Here are some other avatars from their site that people have recorded to give you some more ideas.

If you decide to create an account, your avatar will be visible to the public. It will appear on the Cool Webcam Avatars site and you can show it to the world. Creating an account is easy and free. After logging in, the avatars will be assigned to your account.

If you decide to make an animated avatar, why not upload it and show it here on the MakeUseOf website next to a comment? All you need to do is make a free account on Gravatar, upload your animated avatar there and then use the same email account that you used for your Gravatar account here for your MUO comment. Your animated avatar will then appear next to your MUO comment.

Are you avare of any other animated avatar maker sites? Let us know in comments!
