If you are a power downloader, who likes to download large files or download files via bittorrent, you should definately check out aria2. aria2 is an advanced utility for the ‘powerful geeky downloader’.
Aria2 is for Linux, however Windows and Mac ports are available. It supports downloads in HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/BitTorrent/Metalink protocols. Although it is a command line utility, don’t let it scare you off because there are some GUI’s available that provide a graphical interface to aria2. It is feature rich and not only that but it has some unique features that are not easy to find elsewhere.
This week on the show I’m taking a look at some online FTP clients, a tool to sync your calendars and cloud computing.
I’d love to hear from you. Send me your MP3 files containing comments about the show, reviews of your favourite websites or just general chitchat. I’ll choose a few to play on the show each week. Send them to podcast [at] makeuseof [dot] com.
If you look underneath the links from the show on this page, you will see a little media player where you can listen to the podcast right here on the site. Or if you prefer, you can right-click on the “audio MP3″ logo and save the MP3 file to your computer for listening on your MP3 player or iPod.
I was recently away when my blog broke. A plug-in had somehow broken down, became corrupt and an embarrassing PHP error was seen on the top of every page. Worse yet the admin section wouldn’t work period. The solution was simple right? Log in via FTP and delete the corrupt plug-in.
Unfortunately Murphy’s Law was at work. The computer I had access to had no FTP client (I couldn’t install one/didn’t want to take the time). My two options were to wait till I got home to fix it, or I could use an online FTP client.
Last time I discussed finding drivers for your software programs and also how to set up a printer on Windows. Well today I am going to get onto a more interesting topic - what to put on your computer. I know countless other blogs have done lists like this so this isn’t anything groundbreaking. But I know quite a few people at the moment who are buying their first PC and who are asking me “so what do I put on this PC-thingy-ma-jig then?”. Well, here’s your answer.
So for all the newbies, parents, grandparents, techno-phobes and computer doofs out there, here’s what should be on your computer.
