This winter I have got heavily into skiing. In fact, I have even written some cool articles about skiing applications on the iPhone. That was great when I was just getting into the sport, but after a while I needed to dig deeper. I needed to get with other skiers and find out information about tricks, gear and other skiing essentials. I needed a full featured skiing website that could keep me up to date with the latest happenings.

Last semester, one of my CS professors started class by saying that his superior was strongly encouraging (read: forcing) the teaching staff to use this new web-based discussion board called Piazza. As students, some of us considered it a bit annoying to have to check yet another website but little did we know, this site actually became a very useful and heavily-relied-on tool.

When you’ve got a product on your hands, no matter if it’s physical, software, or something else, you’ll probably want to have a nice support community based on the product. The best way to make such communities is through the use of forums. There are plenty of different forum frameworks out there that you can choose from, both paid and free.

For all you Kindle users out there, Amazon.com has just started a new @Author Questions and Answers forum in which participating authors can be asked questions about themselves and their books. Any Amazon member who has purchased items from the site can ask, reply to or read existing questions to and from participating authors.
