>How much do you enjoy food? Food is one of those things that we all have in common but we experience it very differently. Some of us, for instance, are very open to trying new genres and styles of food whereas there are others who know what they like and are content with sticking to things that are similar.

In either case, it would be nice to be able to discover foods and restaurants you would enjoy based on the meals and places you’ve already eaten, right? How does a customized recommendation and food sharing app sound?

In this article, I’m going to show you a new iPhone app that’s capable of doing all of that and more. Whether you’re a full-fledged foodie or just someone looking to find a new place you’ll like, you will want to check out this app.

What is Forkly?

Forkly is an app specifically made for those who like rating and sharing what they’ve eaten. If you spend any time on Twitter you’ll surely notice that there are people who check-in to restaurants with apps like Foursquare and share pictures of their meals using their phone. There are even those who tweet requesting opinions on where they should eat. If you’re one of those people, Forkly is perfect for you.

Forkly states that they can “help you discover a new dish around the corner, the best burger in town or your favorite cocktail bar in a new city.” And by rating the dishes and entrees you’ve already enjoyed (or hated), your results will be tailored to your style or taste.

<img class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src=" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/1_forkly.jpg?323f2c" alt="iphone restaurant app" width="324" height="483" />

With Forkly, you can “Want” items to save them for later so you can remember to try the new and interesting foods/drinks you discover with the app. This can come in handy if you’re playing around with the app but aren’t particularly hungry at the time.

Forkly also acts as sort of a social network for foodies in that you can share your tastes with your friends and earn influence points while using the app. Tastes can be shared to your Twitter, Facebook, Email, and MMS, and–perhaps more importantly–photos can be shared of your food/drink.

And as your influence points build up, you can become a top influencer for both places and items, adding value to your ratings so others will be more inclined to try something you’ve recommended (or avoid something you didn’t).

To get a better idea of the types of things you can do with Forkly, check out this quick video:

Logging in on Forkly requires that you have a Twitter account, which makes sense because Twitter is the perfect place to share your meals alongside your check-ins and whatnot. But remember, Twitter isn’t the only place you can share these items.

Also, if you happen to be a food blogger, you should check out the embeddable goodies Forkly has available for your blog.

Conclusion

If you’re interested in checking out Forkly on your phone, you can visit their website or get the app for iPhone here.

Forkly is an app I’ve had my eye on for a while now and now that it’s been officially released to the iTunes Store I can see it being pretty popular among foodies. Foodtography–the art of taking pictures of food and sharing them–has really caught on with photo-sharing apps like Instagram, and having a food-centric app like Forkly should help add some functionality and usefulness to that trend.

Do you enjoy taking pictures of your delicious food?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/openmenu_logo.png">Have you ever found yourself craving a specific type of food but didn’t know quite where to order it from (check out OpenTable, KidsEatFor, FoodSpotting, and UEatCheap)? As someone who admittedly enjoys to eat, I have found myself in this situation. I’d be sitting there on my lazy derrière thinking “Mmmm, I could really use a calzone right now!” Try and tell me I am the only person who has ever been there.

In the past, Google has done a pretty good job helping here. You do need to know how to search just right and how to sift through the results but the effort is usually worth it. However, what if there was a site dedicated to view and search through any restaurant menu in your area? I could then just type in “calzone” and my city/state or zip code and up would pop all of the calzone listings in restaurants in my area. I have found just that in OpenMenu.

OpenMenu helps to bring restaurants and customers together. They offer benefits both for the restaurant and the eater. Let’s look at both.

How OpenMenu Benefits Restaurants

OpenMenu offers several benefits to restaurants. It’s a place to put your menu for customers to find and search from. Restaurants should be happy to partake in a free service such as this.

Your Menu In One Place

Are you tired of attempting to maintain a menu in more than one place? You probably have at least a limited version of your menu on your website and there are also other food sites you may be maintaining your menu on. OpenMenu tries to become the one place for your menu. Check out these tools making it easy to maintain your menu in one place:

If you want your menu on your website, OpenMenu has released a WordPress plugin allowing you to do tasks like putting specials in your sidebar, adding a menu page with your OpenMenu menu on it, and more.

If you have a Facebook Page for your restaurant, and you should, you can add a tab containing your OpenMenu menu.

Your Menu Searchable

Imagine the publicity you can have if people in your area can search for menu items they want and your food shows up on their list. Just having the text of your menu online getting indexed by search engines is helpful enough but now you can have your food show up where the people can more easily find what they are looking for.

How OpenMenu Benefits Eaters

Since I don’t own a restaurant, this is the category I fit in and the area that caught my attention with OpenMenu. I fell in love with the idea of searching for a food item I am currently craving. They call it OpenMenu Search and it offers several ways to search.

First, you can search for what you want to eat. Are you visiting Chicago and wondering where you can find a good steak? Go to openmenu.com/search and type the food item and the city information.

The search results should give you everything you need to find the item you want including the dish, price, restaurant name, and the address. Clicking the link will bring up the rest of the restaurant information. Very cool.

You can also search for restaurants which are listed in your area. Go to openmenu.com/search/location.php, enter your city information, and click Check Location.

It will give you a map and tell you how many restaurants are listed for the city and offer a link to the current list.

Downfalls?

There’s a lot of good things about OpenMenu but there are a few things that need to improve.

First off, they should design the main site to be a little more intuitive. For instance, it took some stumbling around to find links to the various search pages.

Secondly, although there are listings in my area, they are largely chain restaurants. I would like to see some mom & pop restaurants jump on board. Often you can find some of them via a Google search but they ought to get on sites like this also.

The other thing is that most of the restaurants currently participating are in the United States. Maybe that’s the target market?

Restaurant owners, head on over and create your menu today. Hungry eaters, try running a food search and see what you find. Then come back and tell us your thoughts.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/toHead_thumb.png" />I often find myself traveling to strange places and often have little to no advice on what the best places to eat and drink are. I am sure we have all tried new food places just to be disgusted. And other times, we have been pleasantly surprised.

Now we can make use of recommendations from others via a little website called Trusted Opinion. It has a database of more than 1.5 million reviewed restaurants around the world.

They also have information on cafés, bars and movies. You can find others with the same taste as you and meet them for real!

Let’s take a look at there website. It is accessible here. When you get there, you will see a screen that looks like this:

To use the site, you will need to sign up for the free service. I normally recommend using a little BugMeNot (MakeUseOf review) action but on this website you would benefit from creating your own account. Moreover, you can keep up with your friends’ favorites when you have an account — giving you more reason to sign up.

Click on the Sign Up Free button in the upper right hand corner and fill in the basic form:

You can also opt to use your FaceBook account instead of creating a new account. I signed up and continued on. It then tries to determine your location and shows you the best places to eat close by. For me, it was off a little bit. I am in Brooklyn and it thought I was in the Bronx. So I fixed it by changing the location in the upper left hand corner. You can see it in the image below. I then saw my local shops. There were 1000 restaurants listed in this neighborhood! Wow who knew there were so many.

You can see them listed in order of “Trusted Score”. I clicked through and saw the information provided to me. You are able to see the name of the eatery, the type of cuisine, the ability to rate it, the location, the phone number and reviews. If your friends reviewed it, they will appear on the right hand side under the map.

By reading the reviews, you can get an idea of how the food is. You can also leave a rating or review yourself to help others understand what the eatery is all about. You can also drill down by types of cuisines by using the menu on the left:

They break it down into anything you could probably want. You can also sort by distance like so:

This is very handy if you have to walk. The site has a great user base and more and more reviews are being populated as its popularity grows. It is people like you that make it awesome. So stop by and review your favorite spots or go and learn about new ones. If you do try one and like it (or hate it) come back to the site and let everyone know how you feel. This will make the next persons decision much easier.

If you decide to stay in try and cook with what you have, check out this post. Do you use a similar site to find the best places to eat? We would love to hear about it in the comments!

Some people always like to go to the same restaurant to eat while others like to switch it up and try something new every time. Others might like Chinese food and some might like American, or some might like to eat somewhere with free wifi. But, whatever your restaurant preferences are, the free Urbanspoon restaurant iPhone (and iPod Touch) app is a must-have for any restaurant connoisseur.

Urbanspoon lets you browse local restaurants, review them, and you can even let the restaurant iPhone app pick a place for you to visit through the amusing random restaurant “slot machine” function. Urbanspoon first lets you pick a city (it supports most major cities in the US) and then allows you to select a neighborhood or suburb to search in detail. From there, you can shake the phone and, after playing a fun slot machine noise, it’ll pick a random type of restaurant and cost for you along with a restaurant that meets that criteria. You can lock each category column as you please, which can help if you’re only looking for a really cheap restaurant, for example. The search tool that Urbanspoon uses also lets you filter out restaurants by things like hours open, chain availability, distance from your current location and popularity among other users.

Urbanspoon also allows you to rate and review the restaurants you visit so that other iPhone/iPod Touch users can see what you think. You can write a short review or just select weather you like or don’t like the location. In addition to reviews, you can call and map the restaurants you find as well as add photos of them, see reviews from “critics” online, set them as a favorite for later review and even look at blog posts about the restaurant on the internet.

Urbanspoon also has a browse tool which lets you simply browse for restaurants by food type, features the restaurant has or popularity of the restaurants in your area. Food types that you can browse for include everything from bagels to smoothies and barbecue to buffet and the features that you can browse through include things like weather a restaurant has free wifi, live music, happy hour or delivery. Another handy part of the browsing feature in Urbanspoon is the ability to see what restaurants in your area local blogs and newspapers are talking about most. The app also has a “scope” tab where you can look at a map of nearby restaurants.

Urbanspoon requires that you create an account to review restaurants, add information to existing ones, save your favorite restaurants or other common tasks. Creating an account is free though, and you’re able to connect to Facebook to register. Also, because the application is free, small ads are placed on some of the pages to cover the costs but they aren’t very obtrusive or annoying while browsing. Finally, Urbanspoon isn’t limited to just restaurants- it also features cafés, bars and more and ties into the Urbanspoon website at urbanspoon.com.

Do you use the Urbanspoon restaurant iPhone app or a similar application when looking for a restaurant on-the-go? What other favorite iPhone or iPod Touch apps do you use? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Picking the restaurant for dinner is hard. Whether it’s a date, or just colleagues or friends hanging out, there’s all kinds of unspoken pressure on the person who picks the restaurant. If the food’s terrible, it must mean I’m terrible. And what if I can’t get a reservation anywhere, and we end up eating at McDonald’s? It’s just all so overwhelming.

Luckily for me, OpenTable’s got my back. OpenTable is a massive (and still growing) system of restaurants, foodies and tools for helping you find the right restaurant as well as always getting a table.

First, you’ll see this screen below (which looks an awful lot like a parking screen for an ad company, but really isn’t). Pick your locale ““ most major American cities are well-represented by OpenTable, as are a number of international cities. Then, you can refine your search even more: by a more narrow location, by type of food, or even by date and time (eliminating any restaurant that might be closed when you want to eat).

If you still can’t decide, let the users of OpenTable help. Every restaurant you’ll see has reviews from OpenTable users who have been there, and the site even aggregates some of the most popular and best-reviewed restaurants in a variety of categories, from “Good for Groups” to “Best Ambience.” Of course, there are also tons of “Best ____ Food” lists as well, for every locale you choose.

To further aid you in finding the right restaurant, every listing comes with useful information: price range, accepted cards, whether there’s a bar or not, where to park, and lots more, all based on giving you as much information as possible to make your food run even better.

Once you’ve narrowed it down to the perfect spot, you choose your date, time, and size of party that you want a table for. OpenTable then does a search, and looks for the best available reservation times, and comes back to you with some options. I tried a place for Sunday brunch at 12pm, and got three reservation possibilities back in only a few seconds.

Choose your reservation time, log in (you can create a temporary account, or create a free account on OpenTable for this part), and you’re done! OpenTable sends you an email confirming your reservation, and you’re all set. Cancelling or changing your reservation is easy, as is exporting the event to your Outlook calendar.

OpenTable also lets you publish your reservation information to Facebook, or send invitations by email to your event ““ this makes OpenTable into a one-stop event planner, at least for the basics.

The reason OpenTable’s so great, as I see it, is that it’s better than you at knowing what’s going on. It’s connected directly to all the restaurants, so its information is as up-to-date as the restaurant itself, and reservations are made internally and easily, rather than OpenTable just acting as a middleman. Your reservation is always certain, and always correct.

OpenTable makes a once-annoying and complicated process extremely simple. Just log in, click, and you’re set ““ no phone calls, no guessing game about when to arrive; OpenTable does the work for you, and you just show up when you’re supposed to. That’s my kind of dining experience.

Are there other great apps that making eating even better? If you know any, please share them with us in the comments.

Did you fast during lent? If you did, what were you craving the most? Well, obviously fasting time is over and it’s time to indulge in sinful food again!

But don’t drop the good habits all at once. Fast food is passé and slow food is on the rise!

If you haven’t done so already, learn how to cook properly. That is goodbye to microwave and freezer (at least for the most part)! If you already know how to cook, but are running out of delicious recipes, you’ll not be disappointed either.

Here is a list of sites to give you some inspiration and fresh ideas, including practical advice and simple recipes for beginners. Maybe this is the time to start something new!

Cookstr

Want to rely on recipes from professionals? Then Cookstr is definitely for you as it contains recipes from hundreds of chefs and cookbook authors. A contributing celebrity chef you certainly know is Jamie Oliver. And I’m sure the other contributors are celebrities, too…somewhere.

You can search the site by recipe, ingredients or chef. If you’re totally uninspired you can hit the Surprise Me! button and see what it comes up with. Totally awesome is the refine search feature which lets you filter recipes for cost, skill level, total time, holiday, course, season, mood and a lot more.

Ingenious! Coming soon is a section with Tips & Techniques.

In case you’re not a good cook, I would recommend to browse recipes and find something that sounds simple enough. For example start with Italian cuisine and then use the refine search feature on the left to filter the Italian recipes for skill level, kid friendly and/or ingredients.

Cookthink

A recipe site designed to please your cravings.

What’s nice about this site is that you can create an account, post comments, save your favorite recipes or share your own. This feature is yet lacking from Cookstr, although I hear that it’s in the planning.

You can search by ingredient, dish, cuisine or mood. From the different category tag clouds you can build your custom search string. Simply go through them and click the most popular tags. Or manually add your own.

The site also contains a reference section for beginners. Here you can review common kitchen jargon and receive explanations about techniques, tools, ingredients and different cuisines. Even the experienced amateur chef will learn something new here.

In Your Kitchen

If reading recipes isn’t enough, In Your Kitchen is for you!

The site features recipes paired with videos. Visual demonstrations are just so much easier to grasp then written instructions.

In addition to recipes, the site invites you to view tours of wineries and restaurants, and being a signed up user you can even post your own material.

What more could you ask for? Oh, that one chef, Diane Stopford, looks a little like the young Kim Basinger. Now aren’t you tempted to have a look already? Guys?

Alright, for those that are not tempted, these are the two sites you should absolutely avoid if you want to eat healthy!

This Is Why You’re Fat

Actually it’s just a blog with a collection of photos featuring bad food. But it could trigger some serious cravings. So don’t go there. I won’t even share a picture.

Breakfast Blogger

A blog dedicated to breakfasts. Those that you can make yourself and those that are served at public places. Some posts contain recipes.

The site has not been updated for a while, but the archives are worth it if you want to feel sick just from seeing fat. It’s incredible what some people will have for breakfast – voluntarily!

Do you need to get away from it all? Well if you’re taking a fabulous vacation or just tooling around town, here’s a few Apps you should definitely have on your iPhone!

First, you’re going to need some gas (even if you’ve got one of those classy hybrids). Well say no more:

Gas Bag (iTunes Link)

Gas Bag is a nifty little gas pricess app that will show you local gas stations on a map, prices included. It’s a social network, so coverage may be really good or really bad in your area. It all depends on how many locals use the network and actively record their purchases.

Even so, it has a great interface, is easy to use, and many commenters on iTunes seem to think it works very well for them.

The thing I like most is that it has Google Maps integration. While this isn’t a novel feature, it’s been implemented well. Gas Bag can either determine your position with GPS (or pseudo-GPS) or you can manually search for your location. After it has your location, it displays the six or so closest gas stations. You can zoom in or out for more or less options.

Once you decide to purchase some gas somewhere, there is the option to enter your purchase into the network. I won’t go into the specifics of exactly how that interface works, but I’ll say it’s much better than the webapp I used to use to track my gas consumption. I stopped using that webapp because the interface was a bit too tiny and when you’re in a hurry, entering gas data isn’t something you always have time for. Let’s see if this one lasts any longer on my iPhone.

[rating=3]

Now that you’re all gassed up, you’re going to need some traveling music. Well obviously you’re carrying around an iPhone/iPod, but just as the last App helped you pick a gas station, the following one will choose some music for you.

FlyCast (iTunes Link)

FlyCast is a pretty decent iPhone radio application. Usually I use Pandora’s iPhone App whenever I need some impromptu tunes, but sometimes I crave the discretion of a DJ and a mix of music that doesn’t necessarily match my exact taste.

Over the course of my life, I have been generally disappointed with internet radio because either the selection is way too limited or the player is really difficult to use. On both counts, FlyCast makes up for all that lost time.

The lists of stations for each genre isn’t terribly long, but everything is still pretty well represented. Also, FlyCast pulls from several different radio sources so if one doesn’t work out, you can try another. They are still expanding their line-up, but it looks like they already have over 1000 stations.

The interface is the part I like best about FlyCast. After you select a station (which admitedly can be a bit confusing), it takes you to the main player. From here you can play/pause the music as well as adjust the volume.

I’m a bit confused as to why there is a separate slide for the volume (alongside the iPhone’s volume controls), but I assume it has something to do with the incoming stream needing to be controlled differently.

When the stream is building up a buffer, the WiFi logo blinks blue. The number next to that indicates how much music is buffered ahead of where you’re listening. This is a great feature because it tells you how long you can get out of sync with your signal and still have an uninterrupted experience.

Most stations pull in cover art and song information along with the signal. Because it’s just a regular iPhone page, you can double-tap any cover art to blow it up to full size. If you want to surf the web (especially to find out about the songs you’re listening to there is an integrated browser that should keep the music running as you surf.

The rest of the features are a little confusing. I had trouble labeling anything as a favorite and most of the other options didn’t seem to have any function. Detractors aside, the core function of this App is solid and in a world of terrible internet radio players, this one does remarkably well.

[rating=2]

With music in your soul and fuel in your vehicle, it’s time to fill your body with food!

Urbanspoon (iTunes Link)

Urbanspoon is probably the best App on this list. First of all, Urbanspoon is already a really great food review site that lets people rate their local eating establishments socially.

On their network you can have friends too, so you can see who likes what. The iPhone App is partially an extension of that network because you can sign in and benefit from having an account. On top of this, though, there are a few terrific features that can help jazz up your night on the town.

Above is the “shake” interface, which lets you lock in location, style, and/or price and then give your iPhone a hearty shake. This starts the unlocked sections spinning (complete with some fun sounds). Where it stops nobody knows! After the selection is made, you can either shake it again for a new one, or click the item for information. The App can give you the address for directions or simply show you ratings and pictures to help you make the best choice. If this interface isn’t for you, a more low-key “browse” window lets you search all the places near you by rating, style, or closest proximity.

[rating=4]

Hopefully at least one of these Apps will make your next trip a little more fun! … Oh and, in case you’re travelling abroas make sure to check previously posted 10 Travel Websites that should be Bookmarked.
