While Flash is on its way out and about to be replaced by HTML5, it is still used abundantly for web content, predominantly for displaying annoying ads. Not only are a lot of flash elements irritating, Flash also consumes significant amounts of bandwidth and is known to be a security risk. So there are good reasons to block it.

Planning on the purchase of a shiny new Android device powered by the latest 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich build? Go ahead, but note that you won’t be able to view Flash content on the device. Buyers of the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus have found that there’s no Adobe Flash Player installed by default, and none available through the Android Market.

In a surprising move (or not so surprising), Adobe is discontinuing its development of Flash plugin for mobile browsers. According to Adobe’s official announcement, they will now focus their efforts on HTML5 instead, as it is “now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively”. They will also continue development of mobile apps based on Adobe AIR and of Flash for desktop.

Over the years, Flash has slowly but surely made its mark on the Internet until virtually every interactive website contained some form of Flash. As it’s now a fundamental part of the Web, seeing some updates to this technology is very much welcome. There are quite a few new features in Flash 11, including some highly notable ones.

Flash sucks in a lot of ways. It’s responsible for the vast majority of browser crashes on my Linux computer for one thing. Be that as it may, flash gave us one great thing – HomeStarRunner. Years before YouTube and social networking, all of us could enjoy cartoons online, and it was all thanks to Flash.

Flash used to be the king of web animation, but now it’s been slowly abandoned because of the possible future ruler: a combination of HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Even though Adobe is still strongly supporting Flash, it is also beginning to embrace the new alternative. The proof is Edge – the new multi-platform tool from Adobe.

Making the switch from Flash to HTML5 content just became a bit easier thanks to a new tool released from Google Labs. Called Swiffy, this web utility is able to convert .swf files into a JSON file which is seen by web browsers as a JavaScript object. The .swf file is uploaded and the JSON output is spit out alongside the original Flash content for comparison purposes.
