<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/darkwindlogo.jpg">If there’s one thing that I don’t like about real-time massively multi-player online games is that some players live their entire lives on some of those games. If you’re a newbie and just testing the waters, you’re lucky to survive for five seconds. Unless I’ve had a lot of time to practice the game offline, I tend to shy away from MMOGs.

Still, sometimes it’s fun to take a break from work and enter into some kind of online competition with a bunch of other players online. One type of game that I enjoy a lot are turn-based strategy games, because they require more careful thought than just quick fingers. This also makes turn-based games a little bit boring at times, because they’ll move a lot slower than real-time war games or shooters.

Recently, I discovered an awesome turn-based strategy game called Darkwind that combines many of the elements of turn-based strategy with real-time action. The game’s logo is War on Wheels, and for good reason. Essentially, you strap yourself to a high-powered vehicle that has machine guns and rocket launchers mounted on the front, and you take part in insane races against other drivers, literally going to war against the competition.

Choose Your Wheels & Go To War!

Learning how to play this game will take you no longer than thirty minutes to an hour. After you sign up for an account, just install the game and when you launch it, you’ll see all of the information you need on the main screen. This includes a chat room and server information.

At the lower part of the main screen you’ll see all active users, as well as all upcoming events. You can also watch any ongoing live events if you want to sit back and be a spectator. There are constantly events going on that you can jump into – at least every ten to thirty minutes.

Before you dive into playing with other players, take the thirty minutes or so to run through the tutorial. You’ll quickly learn how to choose the direction and speed for your car to travel during each turn, as well as how to use your weapons, and also how to change the view so that you can see what’s going on from all angles.

Depending on what the event is, you may face obstacles or a track to navigate through. The tutorial has you manage a couple of jumps and also shows you how to approach and fire upon a truck. Driving your car isn’t a whole lot unlike other racing games you might have played, but it requires a little bit of careful planning. Depending on how you place your car, and what speed you choose, you could send the car sliding right off the road, or slam it directly into a concrete wall.

The game makes you think about the physics of how a car behaves at a certain speed and direction. When you get good, you can cut corners on a race track by sliding through it rather than trying to cut to the inside like everyone else is trying to do. Or carefully plan how you land after a jump so that you get the speed and direction advantage over other drivers.

Your car also comes with a weapon system that you can arm and target at any time during a race or an arena combat event. The tutorial shows you how to select, arm, target and fire the weapon while you’re driving the car turn-after-turn.

Firing on other vehicles is a matter of keeping them within the “firing zone” and having your weapon repeat-fire. If you incorrectly plan your speed and direction, the other driver may escape your firing zone and then spin around to place you inside theirs.

So, once I got the hang of handing the car in the tutorial, I decided to try the real thing. Looking through the upcoming events I saw a deathrace coming up. This is basically a race a few times around the track while shooting at others and dodging missiles. So, I registered and waited the 5 minutes until the match started.

I have to say, game play might be turn-based, but it’s still fast paced and very fun to play. The list of players names go green whenever they’re done planning their next move.

Once all players are ready, all cars move through their current turn. The clock has a limit per turn, so no one can hold up the race. Another cool thing about Darkwind is that anyone can create a match. From the main screen, just click on “custom event” and you can create a race or combat arena using whatever parameters you like.

Overall, I’d say that it’s probably one of the more fast-paced turn based games I’ve ever played. Obviously, not as heart-pounding as Big City Racer or some of the other cool online racing games Simon wrote about, but with the combination of turn-based strategy and a fast-enough pace to get you sitting on the edge of your seat, it’s a game that can easily keep you up into the early hours of the morning trying to win your war on wheels.

Give the game a shot and let us know what you think. Do you prefer this turn-based game over other real-time racing games? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/gaming.jpg">There are a number of games series that are renowned worldwide for their followers and general excellence. These are the main pillars of retail gaming, and often show the stark contrast in quality (or rather, budget) with free computer games.

Surprisingly, these same game studios have been probing the freeware market as well, and have released a good number of games for free as a nice surprise for the freeware gamer.

Below are four such games, stemming from popular games series and available free of charge.

Need For Speed World

In a few decades of racing games, Need for Speed has, time and time again, set the gaming standard for street races, across all platforms. Need for Speed is not just a PC-exclusive installment, it’s the first ever MMORG (Massive Multiplayer Online Racing Game) in the series and available for free.

In the past, “free“ meant a free trial and level cap. Those restrictions are removed now. The game is extended through a system of micro-transactions to unlock extra cars and features. Those who have previously bought the game have received a pleasant number of credits.

Need for Speed World is a decent installment in the series – you either love it or you hate it. Expect unrealistically dumb cops and easy physics, allowing you to work up some additional speed and adrenaline.

Company Of Heroes Online

Company of Heroes Online is based on the original Company of Heroes; an epic real-time strategy installment that was voted Game Of The Year 2006 by PC Gamer, Computer Games Magazine, GameSpy, GameSpot, IGN, and received an impressive array of other awards and nominations.

The game has been in closed beta until earlier this month, and is now open for all.

The online installment received a remarkably good welcome online and by early critics worldwide, and contains all the features you can expect from an online World War II strategy game, with excellent graphics and fluency of use.

Everquest II Extended (Beta)

Everquest is a popular MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) that’s been around since 1999. Everquest II was to be set in a parallel universe, or an alternate future of the game’s setting. Not too long ago, Everquest II Extended went in public beta, as a free to play version of Everquest II.

This version offers a micro-transaction system, and runs parallel to (read: uses separate servers from) the ‘original’ second installment, up to EverQuest II: The Shadow Odyssey.

Gameplay still focuses around adventuring (completing quests and fighting monsters) and socializing with other players. The various races, weapons classes and the vast world of Norrath will keep you entertained for quite some time. Interestingly, the Everquest II Extended download comes with some nifty semi-streaming functionality, so you can get into the game faster than ever.

Battlefield Heroes

Battlefield, most recently known from the realistic first person shooter Bad Company 2, went on a profoundly different tour with Heroes, a joyous, almost comical experience.

We covered Battlefield Heroes back when it was still in closed beta. The game is still the same, a fun cartoon World War II MMO shooter, with a number of fun extensions along the way. Join the Royal or National army, and go at it on foot or in one of the many vehicles. Capture enough nodes and keep them from enemy hands to win.

What do you think is the best free computer game? Let us know in the comments section below!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/giveawaynavigonusa.png" />Do you ever get lost while driving? I know I do, especially while I’m driving. Getting lost while walking is a definitely easier to recover from. But taking a wrong turn in traffic could prove difficult to correct.

Global Positioning System (GPS) has dominated the navigation industry since a few years ago with in-car navigation systems. Now, most modern mobile phones have built-in GPS chips to take advantage of that technology — providing you with instant, portable navigational assistance.

NAVIGON is one of today’s leading companies bringing you mobile navigation software for the iPhone, WM Mobile and Android OS smartphones. Today, we’re giving away 3 copies of NAVIGON MobileNavigator USA, MyRegion US East, MyRegion US Central and MyRegion US West worth $900 in total! Isn’t that awesome? Find out how you can get one.

For the record, I’m testing the Australian version of the application, since that’s where I’m located. Nevertheless, the general user interface remains the same, the only differences are perhaps the maps and certain extras.

Thanks to Dave Drager for the reminder — I should have mentioned that MobileNavigator’s data is stored locally on the device and doesn’t require an internet connection for navigation. However, an active internet connection is require to retrieve additional route information like weather, traffic, etc.

The MobileNavigator main screen is very straightforward. To start navigating, you’ll be presented with several options to choose from:

You can enter an address by filling in the city, street and number details when prompted;</li?

You can search for a local, nearby or nationwide Places of Interest;

By finding a company, restaurant or other destinations with Google Search

Once a destination is selected, MobileNavigator will display other vital details along your route, such as weather reports, parking information and nearby attractions. If enabled, MobileNavigator will also allow you to select the route of your preference by highlighting several alternatives.

The application has several distinctive features, as lane assistance – displays a pop up to show you which lane to take; and speed assistance – the app constantly displays the speed limit of the road you’re traveling on and sounds an alert if the speed limit is exceeded. In-app purchases will grant you access to a lot of other cooler stuff like live traffic reports, panoramic 3D view and reality view.

It has integrated iPod controls and is iOS-ready so MobileNavigator will keep running in the background even if you exit the app — which means that you’ll never miss a turning even if you have to accept a call.

NAVIGON MobileNavigator USA [iTunes link] is priced at $49.99; MyRegion US East, Central and West are $29.99 each. But today, we’re offering you a chance to get them for free!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/BCR.jpg">You cast a tense look behind while the other drivers come to a stop around you. The air is filled with the powerful roar of engines. You twist your key and feel the car come to life below your feet. The whole world seems to focus on a couple of signal lights. The race is on.

There are few games as exciting as online racing. It’s already an aspect of our everyday life, albeit the goody-goody alternative. Online racing allows you to shed all those rules and restrictions, and finally rip the asphalt.

Big City Racer

Vanilla Live Games, the guys who previously brought us BetandRace, just recently released a new online multiplayer racing game. It’s been available for free download since June 26th of this year. It’s an enticing and free racing game, that allows you to measure yourself against other gamers worldwide. A MMORG; Massive Multiplayer Online Racing Game, so to speak.

Big City Racer isn’t just an online racer though. It’s a street racer, with tracks leading past all the great European landmarks. In that same climate, the game allows you to purchase new cars and parts – ensuring a thrilling, and ever so customizable ride.

Game Modes

There are basically only two game modes; training and multiplayer mode.

Training mode is an offline mode. You don’t race against computerized players, but against yourself. This mode allows you to better your time runs on all of those tracks. To give this mode a competitive edge, or just plainly see where you went wrong, you can also turn on a ghost version of your previously best run.

The multiplayer games are available from 2 up to 8 online players. Although players can build out and customize their cars, that’s only for appearance’s sake. To give all players an equal chance to victory, the cars all drive the same. Instead, you can adjust the top speed and maneuverability of your car at the start of each race – depending on the track.

Luckily, all players are classified by skill level. Depending on your racing skill, you’ll either be named a Rookie, Amateur, or Master. The game assures that you will only end up racing against players of the same skill level. This keeps the game fun for rookies, and exciting for masters.

Credits System

Like most free multiplayer games, Big City Racer employs a system of micro-transactions. These credits need to be spent in order to participate in the online multiplayer championship racing games, and can be bought online in small quantities.

However, gamers start out with a fixed number of participation chips. By performing well in races, and landing in the top three, you can earn back your share, and more. Free gamers never need to buy chips, if they are willing to spend enough time in training, and better their skill. And once you’re off, you can raise the bets and win ever more chips.

System Requirements

The game isn’t exactly system-intensive, and can be played by most computers, albeit in a lesser resolution.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/nav2.jpg">Upon returning from a trip to Washington DC yesterday, I realized how much I’ve come to depend on GPS navigation for my Android phone. Not only did it prevent me from succumbing to the twists and turns of the DC city streets, but it helped us navigate to all of the museums and monuments while we were walking through the Capital area.

For years I wanted to buy one of those expensive car GPS units, but never got around to buying one. In the end, my procrastination turned out to be a very good thing, because eventually the Android phone that I received for Christmas covered that base. This is because Google Maps for the Android now includes Google Maps Navigation, an awesome turn-by-turn navigation system that performs as good or better than some of the best GPS units out there.

This works a little bit like the previous version of Google Maps with GPS, which I wrote about previously using my Windows Mobile phone. Ellie also previously mentioned similar mobile navigation systems when she wrote about 6 subway map tools you can use with your mobile phone.

However, Google Maps GPS navigation for Android overlays your GPS location information onto GPS maps in a real time turn-by-turn display. When you enter “navigation mode” the map zooms into the sort of real time mapping mode that you expect to see on a GPS device. As you approach turns or intersections, the unit lists what route you need to take next and the distance to the next turn. The system is even voice-enabled (with either a male or female voice) turn on that option.

From Google Maps To Google Navigation

On your GPS-enabled Android phone, you’ve always had the ability to go to “My Location” for a blinking blue dot that identifies where you are. This ability integrates the mobile Internet data stream with the GPS location coordinates. Google Maps uses your mobile Internet connection to draw out the underlying map, complete with streets and locations. It then turns to your phone’s GPS coordinates to integrate your position on top of that map.

Within Google Maps, you can always see that little blue location dot, based on either your GPS location or the cell tower triangulated “best guess” (if GPS isn’t enabled) by pressing on the “My Location” button within Google Maps. However, what if you have a dashboard mount for your mobile Android PDA and you want to use it for turn-by-turn directions? Well, now that Google has integrated Navigation into Google Maps, all you have to do is press the “Directions” button.

Typically, you’ll want to know how to get from where you are to some other location. For this reason, the first field usually defaults to “My Location.” You can type in the exact address where you want to go, or you can conduct an Internet-based search for the location by pressing the little “search” button to the right of the field. Select whether you want the best driving, metro or walking route, and then press “Go.”

Using the information you’ve provided, Google Maps puts together the fastest driving, metro or walking route given your current location. Each of the items under the “Directions” header is a single step within your entire set of turn-by-turn directions for the entire trip. At the top, you’ll find the total distance of the trip and the estimated travel time for both standard driving as well as estimated time it should take with average traffic delays. By the way – I’ve found that the driving time estimates are eerily accurate, almost down to the exact minute in some cases when there are no significant delays along the way.

Your navigational window appears as shown above while you’re driving. Currently, I have my phone undocked, so the display is vertical, but when you mount your phone in a dashboard docking station, it will appear exactly as above but in the horizontal view. A blue dot identifies your current position, and changes to an arrow when you are in motion, showing your current direction of travel. The navigational screen highlights your route in blue. At the top of the window you’ll find the next intersection or turn in your route plan, as well as the distance to that turning point. At the bottom of the window you’ll find the estimated travel time remaining until you reach your destination.

See the little black dot next to the “9 hr” estimate? That updates based on any traffic information that’s available. In other words, good traffic flow means you get a green light. When you’re in a slow or stopped traffic area, this indicator changes color to reflect that you’ve entered a traffic zone that may alter your estimated arrival time. If you touch the indicator, the display switches to the “traffic” view.

This view is actually extremely useful. For the higher population centers like small and large cities, traffic information is usually available. For those areas, you’ll see current traffic status reflected on the traffic map with green, amber or red strips of road. If available, there’s also little indicators reflecting construction zones. If a strip of road on this display is red, you could save a lot of time on your trip by trying to locate an alternative route around that stopped/slow traffic zone.

Want even more information layered on top of your map? Just click the menu button and select “Layers.” This is where you can add lots of important information to your map, or switch to a different view mode such as Satellite or Traffic view.

If you really hate worrying about where the next place to get gas or food is located, simply enable the “Gas Stations” and “Restaurants” layers, and those locations will show up on your navigational screen with their corresponding symbols.

Once I enabled the restaurants layer, you can see above that the map displays local places to with a fork/spoon symbol. In the map above, I have the choice of a place to eat right along the highway, or I can opt to travel a little bit off the beaten path to go to a restaurant on the water. Most travelers would have no idea that there’s an alternative place to eat, and like everyone else you’d have to fight the crowds. But with Google Maps Navigation, you get extra insight into those sort of hidden spots everywhere you travel.

If you’re the sort of person that is more textual, and you just like to know what route number to look for and which direction to turn, you can select “More” from the menu and click on “Directions List.”

This display mode shows you distance and time to destination, as well as all of the turn by turn directions with your upcoming turn highlighted in green. In this mode, there are no graphics or indicators to confuse you – just glance at the upcoming turn and route information and make the turns as needed. The window will update with your new status as you drive, so you’ll always know where to turn next.

I now use Google Maps navigation as my trusty guide no matter where we travel. It was running during the entire 10 hour drive during our recent trip, and it safely directed me through some of the most extreme and difficult traffic situations in places like Washington DC and New York City. It performs as well or better than many of the most expensive GPS navigational systems out there – and best of all, it’s free!

Have you ever used Google Maps Navigation? What do you think about it? Would you suggest any improvements? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

The new version of Bing Maps has a unique feature called Maps Apps, which are extra components you can add to their mapping software to unlock more functionality.

In this guide, I’ll cover a few new Maps Apps that can help you plan your next trip better.

Using the New Bing Maps

Before you can get started, you’ll have to install Microsoft’s free Silverlight plugin to view the new Bing Maps. Silverlight is similar to Flash and allows your browser to run interactive web applications.

Not sure if you have Silverlight installed? Just head over to the new Silverlight-powered Bing Maps and you will receive a notification if you don’t have it.

To use Bing Maps Apps, you need to use the new version of Bing Maps. You can access the new version by clicking the Try it now link under Explore the new Bing Maps at the Bing Maps website, or view the new version directly by clicking this link.

Bing Maps is similar to other online map applications like Google Maps, so you should feel right at home when using it.

Access Maps Apps

To access Maps Apps, click the Maps Apps button which is located in the bottom left corner of Bing Maps.

This will open a window that displays the 30 (and growing) Maps Apps that are currently available. To use Maps Apps, simply click on one to activate it. Below are some of the newer additions to Bing Map Apps.

Calculate Distance Between Locations

If you’re doing any serious trip planning, it’s always a good idea to figure out the distances between certain points of your route to plan for food and refueling. Bing Maps makes this easy with the Distance Calculator app.

To use the Distance Calculator, type in a location into the search box or drag the orange flag to a location on your map.

/p>

You can add your entire trip, destination by destination, in the Distance Calculator and it will show distances between each location. You can change the order of your destinations by using the arrows in the left sidebar.

In addition to showing you individual distances, the Distance Calculator will show you total distances for both flights and road travel.

Find a Parking Spot

Click the Parking finder Maps App to get parking information for airports and cities utilizing information from BestParking.com.

The Parking Finder app supports several large cities and many airports. After you’ve added the app, click the Cities or Airports tabs to select your destination. Your map will then be updated with data from BestParking.com overlayed on top of your destination.

Find a Hotel

The Hotel finder app makes it easy to find a hotel at your destination using information from Bing. Click the Hotel finder button in Maps Apps to activate this feature.

Small purple indicators will appear on your map showing the locations of all hotels in the area. Clicking these indicators reveals details about the hotel, and clicking the hotel’s name displays additional information (including reviews) in the left sidebar.

These were three of my favorites among the recent additions.

A few apps not covered in this article, but would also be helpful when planning a trip are Current Traffic, Roadside Attractions (great for family vacations), and Local Events.

Give the new Bing Maps a try and share your thoughts with us in the comments!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/speedcam.jpg" />I have the misfortune of working in a town that is very likely the capital of speed traps for all of Maine and very likely the entire eastern seaboard of the United States. The town is North Berwick, Maine. Unlike most other small towns that try to gauge their speed limits to match safe driving conditions and the general driving speed of 90 percent of drivers on that area of road, this particular town drops the speed on these long and straight stretches of road from 45 miles per hour down to 25 miles per hour.

On these roads, patrol officers enjoy sitting at several spots that maximize the likelihood they will clock someone speeding who has just passed the drop in speed, without realizing it. The road doesn’t change, but the speed does. It is the perfect definition of an unjust police radar speed trap. It was on this road, on a bright and sunny day, that an especially arrogant officer decided to pull me over and charge me with criminal speeding. A charge that, in the U.S, could carry a fine of up to $500, a suspended license and possible jail time.

I visited one of the best lawyers I knew, gave him the details and paid him the lawyer fee. He was able to take care of the ticket for me. However, the lesson I learned from this experience, the third or fourth speeding ticket I’ve received in this particular speed-trap town called North Berwick, is that there are occasionally those communities that are unscrupulous in collecting funds from such unfair and unjust posted speed limits. It’s for this reason that I was very pleased to discover not one or two, but six technological solutions that can give the poor, unsuspecting citizen a little bit of an advantage in these dangerous and unfair police radar speed traps.

Tools To Combat Unfair Police Radar Speed Traps

One of the first things I did when I upgraded from my Windows Mobile phone to a GPS-enabled Motorola Droid was to check what applications are available that might help protect me from such unscrupulous speed traps by local cops like the officer that pulled me over. The first online system that I discovered is also the one that I consider the absolute best one out there – Trapster. There’s an entire online system on the website that shows you all of the active speed traps. The map is constantly updating and changing as new reports come in from all across the world.

Of course, the best part of the community-driven Trapster system is that there are mobile apps for just about any mobile device out there, including Blackberry, iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile and even certain GPS systems. You can set these apps to alert you any time you come within range of a known speed trap, or a recently reported police stake-out location.

You can set the alert distance from the speed trap so that you have plenty of time to look for the sudden change in speed limit and slow down to the posted speed. Most importantly, when you spot a speed trap that wasn’t recognized or alerted by Trapster – do your part to make the system more effective by adding that speed trap into Trapster’s database.

Here, I’ve added the famous Morrell’s Mill Rd, North Berwick, Maine speed traps to Trapster’s database. Hopefully that will save a driver or two from the horrible fate of having their wallet drained into the town coffers.

For the sake of variety, I’m going to cover the top sites out there that can give you additional insight into the police radar speed traps in your area. Unfortunately, most of the remaining online services are focused primarily within the U.S. Or course, maybe that’s because the U.S. is most plagued by such unreasonable speed traps? CopSpy is one of these useful websites. This is more of a log of historical speed traps, with comments about particular speed trap areas that date back to 2003 and go up to today. You can really get to know the habits of local police by reading through these citizen logs.

The Bear Traps website, shown above, provides a very basic and general overview of the police trap “hot spots” along any major Interstate in the United States. The site lists all reported red light cameras as police radar speed traps that were reported by citizens for major highways and exits.

Njection, a popular automotive website and forum, offers this awesome mashup that provides a satellite overview with a layer for crashes or speed traps. This particular system doesn’t feature a whole lot of speed traps (nowhere near the number Trapster offers), but as far as crash history, the system is remarkable. You can view all crashes reported throughout the history of the system – which really offers a great oversight as to what areas are dangerous. The speed trap feature is also useful and is still getting updated, but the user base needs to grow a bit more for it to be very effective as a real-time reporting tool.

SpeedTrap labels itself as the National Speed Trap Exchange, and this is exactly the public service that the site provides for U.S. citizens. No matter what town you check, you’ll likely discover well written speed trap reports from local residents who are fed up with the unfair and unjust tactics of local police departments.

Police Traps is an excellent International resource that covers police trap sightings, red light cameras and traffic incidents all throughout the world. In the map above you can see the mashup for reports throughout Europe. This resource does have a fair user base and could rival Trapster in its usefulness.

Have you had your own experience getting caught in an unfair speed trap? Do you have any of your own favorite resources that you use to find which towns have such areas with inappropriate posted speed limits? Share your insight in the comments section below.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/driveHead.png" />Do you want to try out some really cool car driving simulation programs? Well we have two of them for you that will help you improve (or learn) basic driving skills like the dreaded parallel parking and all way stop signs. Both of them are web-based so they are cross platform and will work on any OS or browser.

The first site is Learn4Good and they have a car driving simulation program called Drivers Education. Once you are there and start up the game you will be given a warning that this should not be your only tool to learn to drive nor should it substitute actual driving lessons. With that said you will continue on to choose your instructor from Jessica, Johnny, Mr. Bumper and the boss lady. Can you guess who I picked?

Yes I choose Jessica. She will politely introduce herself. Don’t stare ““ you might fail!

After that you can either choose to start with lessons or go right for the driving test. The test is fun! You also have the option to quit, change your instructor or view the help.

Here are the available lessons: parallel parking, left turn at an all way stop, left turn on a green light, proceed through an all way stop and pulling out of a parking spot.

You use the up and down arrows as well as the backwards and forwards arrows to maneuver your car. You can hit up and right at the same time to move on a angle. Use your knowledge of parallel parking to do so successfully.

When you start your exam you will have to take a test for each of the lessons. When you complete them without running people over, hitting a car or disobeying the traffic law you will move on to the next exam like so:

Continue playing and learning until you can beat all of them with your eyes closed.

They will stop you from breaking the law and make you start over – better than failing in real life ““ right?

The next site with a car driving simulation program is brought to us by Chrysler and can be found on their website.

They tell you on the site that you will experience:

Customizable vehicles.

Playable tutorials.

Real-world driving conditions.

Click play it now to begin. You will be prompted to install something called 3dVIA player ““ just follow the prompts. Once that is installed you will be ready to play.

Click on New Game to start your new game or you can continue a saved game, read the instructions, credits or the leaderboard.

We jumped right in and chose New Game and saw this:

I ran with the first lesson and went through the basics after reading some facts and waiting for the environment to load.

They will make you put on your seatbelt before starting by pressing the B key. Then you will learn how to drive and maneuver, consider this the starting board. Continue on, learn and go get your license. Enjoy.

Do you know of any other car driving simulation programs? Let us know about them below in the comments.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Screen-shot-2010-01-28-at-19.00.13.png" />Full throttle, drifting the corners and the smell of burning rubber. Auto races. There’s little more exciting, more empowering than flying over the track on your metal horse. Sadly, street races are illegal. And I don’t have my driver’s license.

To be honest, I’ve never been very interested in cars. When I’m in “car boasting” company, I’m happy if I manage to nod and look amazed at the right times. But however uninterested I may be in automobiles, I do enjoy a good ‘virtual drive’ now and then.

We’ve already written about The Best Free Racing Games in the past, but X games aren’t enough to last a lifetime.

Project Torque

Project Torque is a self-proclaimed MMORG. No, not a role-playing game, but a Massively Multiplayer Racing Car Game Online. To dispel the common misunderstanding from the start: online is not the same as in-browser. It actually means you can race against other people from all over the world – with up to twenty different participants. Take a look at the trailer below.

A fun and simple racing car game online. Aeria Games, the online publisher, has delivered splendid work with Project Torque. Not entirely surprising, though, you might already know Aeria Games from previous titles like Wolf Team and Last Chaos.

Online Racing Madness

As said before, Project Torque supports online races with anything between two and twenty different racers. To make this manageable, there are a number of supporting online elements.

You can connect with friends or other racers by using the integrated chat and email clients. Although you don’t have to even touch it to enjoy yourself, the community is an integral part of the game if you’re looking to dive in completely.

Project Torque also regularly organizes tournaments. This, as well as your overall prestige in the normal races will determine your place in the online rankings.

In-Game Shop and Item Mall

There are hardly any games left without a source of revenue. After all, keeping those servers up is a costy job, nevermind developing the game itself. Although some games have been trying in-game advertisement, most still apply a system of micro-transactions. This involves the selling of premium upgrades and car customization parts.

Participating in these micro-transactions is by no means obligatory. Players willing to spend a few bucks here and there have the advantage of quality and often exclusive items. But it lacks the hard work that makes these kind of games great. By working hard, and ascending the skill ladder. You don’t need any of the fancy premium stuff to have fun in the game.

Project Torque is just one of many racing car games online. We’d love to hear the games you play. You can give your suggestions or feedback in the comments section below.

We know your problems. We know that if Aunt Martha sees your red sedan pass by her front porch, she will FORCE you to come in and try her lasagna. We know that you hate Toll Road #4339 Google Maps sends you on every time you want to go somewhere.

That is why I have compiled a list of 3 handy dandy features of Google Maps that you may not have known about – features that will help you make it through the day without hitting a pedestrian due to your frustrating experiences like the ones pictured above.

Google Driving Directions – Drag and Drop Routes

For those who really want to customize how they get from Point A to Point B, Google Maps has a tool that allows you to drag the route they have provided in certain directions say, because you know that the driving directions given will require you to traverse a heavily bogged down construction zone. New directions are provided on the spot, as if you had just searched for them. Here’s an example.

In light of the Los Angeles Lakers’ recent NBA Championship, here is a set of directions from the Staples Center (where they play) to The Walt Disney Concert Hall, both in Los Angeles:

Now if I decided that I wanted to go on the Harbor Freeway, CA 110 for some crazy reason, I could drag the route:

Here is a side by side comparison of the driving directions. They are automatically calculated and changed as you drag your route. Pretty neat, huh?

One thing you may need take note of is that your constant dragging back and forth may be cumbersome to sort through. You may find that the final directions you obtain after fooling around with the path is an infinite loop. Although this is a very handy feature, make sure to double check that all of the directions are feasible.

Congestion Overlays

It is every traveler’s worst nightmare to run into accidents, construction, congestion, or an overall slowing down of traffic. This is most likely why Google Driving Directions has provided an extremely useful overlay of your map that describes current driving conditions, with a full blown legend that houses live traffic updates along roads.

The only foreseeable downside to this feature is that it mostly only provides these overlays on larger roads, highways and interstates. Then again, larger roads are the ones that we worry the most about.

I’m sure all of you can read, so I won’t go into detail to explain what the colors mean. Certain icons mean certain things, for instance in the above screenshot, the warning sign denotes some type of accident or stoppage due to hazardous conditions, whereas a small man shoveling coal (or at least that’s what it looks like) denotes construction. A red circle with a line through it means that the current lane is closed.

Let’s say you have a planned event, and you would like to know what the traffic conditions will most likely be like at that time. No problem! There is a feature that allows users to choose the day of the week as well as the time of day, and Google Maps will provide a prediction based on aggregate data it has compiled previously. This should give users a better idea of what to expect on certain roads during rush hour or things of that nature:

Search Box Customizations

Although technically more than one “feature,” there are certain things to know about the direction search box that can prove to be useful when finding directions. Believe it or not, I have had more than one friend come up to me and ask me if there was a way to add multiple “checkpoints” to stop by on along their trip. It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you take time to read:

If we should decide to add a final destination (no pun intended), we can simply click the link and hooray, we have successfully set up segmented directions for a cross country road trip to the Empire State Building:

Google Driving directions also has a dropdown menu for you to choose by what medium would like to travel through. This service may be limited because most of it is still in beta, but certain locations DO give users the freedom to choose. As of now, it is limited to “by car,” “by public transit,” or “by walking”:

Finally, if we click “show options”, we can choose to have Google Driving directions search for routes that avoid toll roads or highways, or both:

So, there you have it. We hope that wherever you go, you drive safely and are aware of your surroundings. Google Driving Directions is an extremely powerful branch of Google Maps – it provides users with a lot of freedom and flexibility to roam around and explore new areas without actually going there.
