If you want to download YouTube videos to your PC, the options are seemingly endless. There are a huge number of options available that are simple and effective, including not only standalone software but also browser extensions.

Mac owners have fewer options to pick from – but that doesn’t mean we’re out of luck. There are several YouTube downloaders available that work as well or better than anything you would find on Windows.

ClipGrab

If you’re looking for one piece of software that can handle not just YouTube downloads, but also a number of other sites, ClipGrab is a good choice.

What I like about ClipGrab is the interface. Instead of asking you to enter a YouTube video’s link, you can search YouTube through the software to find relevant videos. This search function is quick and returns relevant content, though it is limited to four results – a handicap I’d like to see removed.

ClipGrab can also download via URL. The manager could not be easier to use and allows for a number of different download formats including MPEG4, WMV and OGG (among others).

Though the search function only works with YouTube, the software is capable of downloading from some other sites if you enter a video’s URL. Supported sites include Clipfish, Collegehumor, Dailymotion, MyVideo, MySpass, Sevenload, Tudou and Vimeo.

ClipGrab works with all recent versions of OS X.

Fastest Free YouTube Downloader

As the name implies, Fastest Free YouTube Downloader is built to be speedy. It is supposedly able to download videos at over 5MB/sec – if you have an Internet connection that can support it.

In my testing I was only able to achieve a maximum of 1.9MB/sec, which is among the quicker download speeds I’ve been able to achieve with my connection. Stopwatch tests showed that this software does download a three minute long 720p clip at least twenty seconds faster than the other programs here. So it appears there is some merit to the “fastest” label.

What you may like even more, however, is the direct interface and large number of video conversion options. You only need to enter a YouTube video link and hit Start Download – but before you do that, you can choose to save the video in one of over 40 formats.

Fastest YouTube Downloader works with OS X Snow Leopard and Lion.

4k Video Downloader

Another simple YouTube Downloader, 4k Video Downloader supports not only YouTube but also a number of other sites such as Vimeo and Dailymotion. You download videos simply by copying the URL from your browser and then clicking the “Paste URL” button in the software.

Nothing special, right? But 4k does offer something a bit unusual – the ability to download entire YouTube playlists. You can do this simply by pasting the URL of any video that is a part of a playlist. The software automatically detects it and will give you the option to download all related videos.

Conversion options are limited, but include the most popular options – FLV, MP4, MKV and MP3. You can choose video quality and format each time you download, or you can enable “smart mode” which applies the same options to all videos automatically, taking an extra step out of the process.

4k Video Downloader works with all recent versions of OS X.

Tubulator

This app calls itself “the YouTube browser.” Like ClipGrab, there is a search function included – but it’s far more robust, and allows for far more results to appear. And yes, it does work like a browser. You enter the term you’d like to search for in the search bar, and results appear. Tubulator doesn’t just give you results either – it actually gives you a fair amount of information including thumbnails, duration, quality and more.

When it comes time to download, you won’t find many format options. Video is converted to MP4, while audio-only downloads can be converted to MP3 or OGG. You can also select a preferred video quality.

Obviously, this isn’t the best choice if format choice is your primary concern. It is, however, a good choice if you want to browse videos rather than download a specific video you’ve already viewed.

Tubulator works with all recent versions of OS X.

Conclusion

Of the options here, I’ve used ClipGrab the most in the past. I like the interface and the conversion options are good enough for my needs.

I’m also partial to Fastest Free YouTube Downloader, however – and 4k Video Downloader’s ability to handle playlists is great, as well. Several of my favorite YouTube channels group similar videos by playlist, making 4k the best option for grabbing a lot of content at once.

I suggest giving all of these options a shot to discover which one works best for you.

We’ve published lots of articles about download managers here at MakeUseOf. FlashGet, Free Download Manager, and Download Accelerator plus are some of the favorites among Windows users. DownThemAll is usually the pick when we’re going for a mass downloader compatible with our favorite browser. One that we’ve yet to feature is JDownloader. Some would say that it’s for the more advanced user, but it’s quickly becoming my favorite.

To help you guys fall in love with this little tool, I’m here to show you how to use JDownloader, in conjunction with a free and simple web tool, to mass download images or other files from open directories and websites.

In this example, I’ll be using an open directory that I found over at /r/opendirectories on Reddit. That’s a great little spot to find downloadable content in ridiculous amounts. From there, I’ve managed to find an open directory full of sound effects. Let’s check out one with sound effects for animals and birds (this link may be dead before you’re able to get to it, so a screenshot is below).

We’re hoarders and we want it all. The next step is to go to Webmaster Toolkit’s Link Extractor. This unique little tool will extract the links and images of any website you push through. Let’s copy and paste the open directory’s URL here. Since they’re links, we are extracting HREFs, not IMGs. IMGs would be used for extracting images. Those results should show up as displayed below.

Copy all of the results, excluding the last one. The last one is the parent directory link, which is basically one folder up in the directory. For anyone downloading from many open directories, you’ll always want to exclude the last result. Even if you include it though, you’ll just be downloading a single HTML webpage, so it’s not a big deal. Make sure the results are copied to your clipboard.

Your next step is to download JDownloader and get it running.

Now let’s select where you’ll be saving the files to. Click on the Settings tab and you should see the following.

After you’ve selected your directory, click the Linkgrabber tab. The Linkgrabber is basically JDownloader’s built-in system for checking the validity of links. That way, you won’t be attempting to download 404 pages or files that do not exist. It’s a good middleman between you and getting the files you want. Near the bottom left of this window, click Add URL(s). You should then see the following.

JDownloader has attempted to pull the list of URLs we copied from your clipboard, but for some reason the application seems to handle URLs with spaces incorrectly. Links should not include spaces, anyway.

Let’s bring up Notepad now. Paste your list of URLs. From the Edit menu, click Replace…. In the Find what: field, you want to put in a space. In the Replace with field, you want to enter “%20″ (without quotes). %20 is the hexidecimal value for a space. Then click Replace All. It should then replace all spaces with the hexidecimal value, and you’ll see an awful lot of them in your list. Don’t worry, that means it worked (you do not need to include this step in the process for websites without spaces in links, which is the case 99% of the time).

Now we want to copy that list of URLs. Delete the single line in the JDownloader list and paste our new list. JDownloader then proceeds to check every file in the list and gives you a total download size.

Now, click the play button at the top to start your downloads. You’ll be automatically switched to the Downloads tab and you’ll be able to monitor your download progress. Your files are now downloading!

Remember, using the link extractor you can extract HREFs or IMGs. If you have a particular page, forum thread, or other website filled with images you want to save, you can use this exact same process.

If you need any help or have any other questions regarding this little method, feel free to drop a line in the comments. JDownloader is for more advanced users (in my opinion) and further unassisted configuration can get a little tricky. I’m here to help.

Do you want to avoid using the command line when installing bleeding edge software? Then manage your Ubuntu PPAs from a simple GUI with Y PPA Manager.

Ubuntu users get their software from the Ubuntu Software Center, or the command-line based “apt-get”. These programs, in turn, get software from online repositories, which are essentially collections of software that automatically provide updates. By default Ubuntu can access thousands of programs in the repositories.

So what’s a a PPA? It’s basically a repository designed to keep a particular piece of software up-to-date faster than the Ubuntu team can. These PPAs can also provide access to brand new programs not available by default in Ubuntu. Find more information in my article what is an Ubuntu PPA?.

As that article points out, there are relatively simple-to-use command line tools for adding a PPA to your system. If you’d like to avoid the command line, however, Y PPA Manager can help you manage your PPAs (though you will need the command line to install it!)

So What Does This Thing Do?

Start up this program and you’ll see the program’s main interface, which outlines what the program does nicely:

First off, naturally, is adding a new PPA. Doing this is simple: just add the name of the PPA you want to add.

Once you do, assuming you’ve made no mistakes in the name, Y PPA Manager will automatically add the PPA and refresh all packages. You’ll see a popup when the process is complete:

Once you see this notification you can find the software you’re looking for in the Ubuntu Software Center or whatever package manager you make use of regularly.

You can also remove PPAs, which is self-explanatory.

Wondering what’s in some of the PPAs you added a few months ago? You can pull up a list of all packages, if you want. Just open the list menu and pick which PPA you want to investigate.

There are some advanced options. For example, you can “purge” a PPA, meaning the PPA is removed along with all packages inside it. You can also back up your repositories, which is perfect for when you’re re-installing Ubuntu or switching to a new computer.

PPAs are typically found on the web, when you discover a great new piece of software you want to try out. Sometimes though, you may want to find a PPA for a particular piece of software you already know about. Y PPA’s search function is perfect for this.

Finally, there are a few settings you can configure, including an Indicator and the version of Ubuntu you’re using.

Overall the program is easy to use for those used to using GUIs, meaning PPAs can now be used by just about anyone.

Installing Y PPA Manager

There’s a chicken-egg problem here, though. In order to install Y PPA Manager you need to add a PPA, without a friendly GUI. Don’t worry, it’s relatively easy. Open your command line and copy these lines over, one at a time:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/y-ppa-manager

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install y-ppa-manager

“But wait,” I hear you say, “if installing a PPA without this program is so simple, why does anyone need this program?”

You’re just hard to please, aren’t you? Having said that, Y PPA Manager does a lot more than just add PPAs and is certainly worth having around even if “add-apt-repository” is a relatively straight-forward command.

Enough about my thoughts, though – what do you think? Please join me to chat about this program in the comments below, because I love hearing from you.

Oh, one more thing – this program is the hard work of Andrew over at Web Upd8, which is an amazing Ubuntu and Linux blog you guys should check out.

Download managers have been around for ages, helping us cope with not-always-reliable connections and enabling us to pause and resume downloads at will. This by itself is a blessing even in the age of permanent, fast connections. But a further problem arises when using an iOS device.

Not only does the built-in downloader in Safari not natively support pause and resume, the process of trying to grab a file and simply download it becomes a hassle. Here is where download managers such as Meteoric come in handy.

Meteoric is much more than just a download manager – it has its own built in browser, media player and can sync with numerous services. The free version supports downloads of up to 2MB, but the full version comes with the easy-to-swallow price tag of $1.99 (or $2.99 for the HD, iPad version). Let’s see what it can do.

Downloading

There are several possible ways to download using Meteoric. The first and most obvious one is to click the download link. But there isn’t always a download link. What then?

First, you can try a long tap on the item you wish to download. This opens a force-download menu from which you can choose “Download”. You can also choose to copy the link URL to use in the next method.

If this doesn’t work, you can download manually using the URL. Tap the manual download icon on the top right. The URL will either automatically appear in the dialog or you will have to copy and paste it manually.

If this too fails, don’t despair! Click the small plugin icon to the left of the address bar (the one that looks like a puzzle pieces), and a whole new world of awesome plugins will open at the bottom of your screen. For this purpose, choose “List all Links”.

This will open a new page with only links in it. You should now be able to access the video/audio (or whichever) link you were looking for, and start downloading simply by tapping it.

Either way, when you start a download you will get the chance to choose the name of the file. You can ignore this and Meteoric will give it the default name.

At any time, you can access your downloads manager and view all in-progress and finished downloads. From here you can also access the file manager, which we will look at later.

You can easily transfer the files you download to your computer. There are numerous ways to do this, such as Dropbox, e-mail and good old iTunes. When you plug your device, launch iTunes and click on your device. Go to the Apps tab, scroll down to File Sharing, choose Meteoric from the list and you will be able to access all your downloaded files.

Managing and Playing

As mentioned earlier, Meteoric tries to provide a sort of all-in-one solution. The file manager is easy to use and organize, and you can create folders and arrange things as you see fit. You can also easily delete and rename files.

Long tap on a file to access this context menu. From here you can move the file, open it using other applications, or e-mail it. You can also link Meteoric to Dropbox from here for easy file transfer to multiple computers.

Each file comes with an icon according to its file type. Tapping on the file will open a “preview”, which actually allows you to view the file. If you can’t open a file in preview, it might be due to the file’s extension. Try renaming it and adding .mp4, for example. This way, I managed to turn an unopenable file into a working video file.

Meteoric also comes complete with a built-in media player, but for some reason I couldn’t manage to play videos in it (the files were working in other players). I did manage to use it for audio files, though. You can easily create playlists and listen to music right within Meteoric.

More Options

I haven’t even scratched the surface of what Meteoric can do. A quick look at the settings reveals a plethora of options to play with. You can pretty much customize every aspect of the app, including which browser it should try to imitate.

There are also multiple plugins for social sharing, converters, and even an option to sync to Firefox.

If you feel a bit lost, there’s an extensive FAQ which you can access at any time by lightly scrolling down and releasing. This will load a “Magic bar” which contains a help button.

Bottom Line

There’s no doubt that Meteoric turns a sometimes impossible task into an easy one. If you’re a regular downloader and you’d like to use your iOS device for this purpose, Meteoric is well worth the effort (and money).

I did find it a bit hard to deal with at first. The interface is well thought out, but it still takes some time to get everything working just right. When it does, Meteoric is a great addition to any download-loving iOS user.

What do you think of Meteoric? Know of a better way to download files on iOS devices? Please share in the comments!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/intro.png" />A bit after I figured out that there is a wealth of programming tutorials on YouTube, I thought it might be a good idea to download them all so I can view them on the go on my mobile devices. Since the majority of these videos have been kindly organized into neat playlists, the question now seemed to be whether there is a way to download whole playlists. I certainly wasn’t the only one to ask this question. In fact, our readers have also wondered the same thing on the Answers community.

Today, we’ll go over two ways you can download entire playlists, one which should make Firefox users ecstatic, and another Windows program which presents some handy options for mass video downloaders.

BYTubeD – Bulk Youtube Video Downloader (Firefox Addon)

This Firefox 4-compatible add-on is a simple but fantastic little tool to help you find download links for multiple videos. Once you’re in a playlist page, you can right-click and select the BYTubeD option. The button can also be invoked from any YouTube pages with multiple videos, such as search results from a keyword.

After you click on the BYTubeD link, a window will appear with the list of video links it has found. Now this is the part that confused me at first, because I didn’t quite read the instructions or the Help section. You have to select the videos you want to download by pressing Ctrl + A to select all videos or hold Ctrl while you click on the specific links you want.
Once you have a few neon green links, you can select the destination folder, whether you want the videos in FLV format or (MP4 if they’re available), and whether to generate links or enqueue videos for download.
If you chose Enqueue for Download and pressed Start, the default Firefox download manager will popup and show the current downloads.

Since I have DownThemAll, I chose Generate Links, so BYTubeD will create a new HTML file with links to the videos I selected so I can use DownThemAll on the current page. Generate Links should work for other download managers as well.

I have found BYTubeD to work flawlessly. If you don’t use Firefox, you can still download multiple videos from a playlist with the following program.

DVDVideoSoft’s Free Youtube Download [Windows]

DVDVideoSoft has a variety of converter software, but the one we are interested in is the YouTube Download 3.0.1. When you’re installing the latest build, make sure to carefully choose what to install, because for older versions of other program files by DVDVideoSoft, there could be crapware offers sometimes.

Once you have installed the YouTube Download program, you can paste in any video or playlist URL and choose the video quality and video format, such as MP3, FLV and 3GP.

For AVI, you have to click on Edit, which will bring up the preset editor.

One of the best parts about this downloader program is that you can preview the size of the individual videos and the playlist as a whole depending on the video format you choose. You can also select individual videos from a playlist that you want to download and which ones you want to skip.

The instructions for this program suggest that you can also use this program to download all of the videos from a channel as well.

For Linux users, youtube-dl is incredibly powerful and also supports playlist downloading. See this video for the how-to. Does anyone know if there’s a good YouTube playlist downloader for Mac?

Now, let’s hear from you. What do you use to download YouTube playlists? Enlighten us in the comments!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/steadyflowicon.png">Manage your downloads on Linux, outside of your browser. SteadyFlow is a lightweight, simple piece of software that makes managing downloads on Linux a snap.

Every browser can download files, and for small files this is fine. If you’re downloading a large file however, your browser may not be the right tool for the job. You might restart your browser, or your browser may crash, causing you to lose all progress on your file. With your browser’s downloading tool the result is a download you need to restart, wasting precious bandwidth.

This is when download managers come in handy. These programs handle large downloads so your browser doesn’t have to, and SteadyFlow is a download manager for Linux that tries to stay out of your way.

Clean, Usable Interface

Fire up SteadyFlow and you’ll quickly see a very clean window:

Here you can see your current downloads. You can also add and remove downloads, and pause downloads in progress. If this seems simple, that’s because it is; that’s part of the point of this program. Close the SteadyFlow window and it will continue its progress in the system tray. You’ll even get notifications when a download is done.

Preferences are kept simple, but there are a few things you can do. For example, you can tell the software where to put your downloads and what to do when a file is completely finished.

Close SteadyFlow and it will remember where it left off.

Chrome Integration

You can download a very simple Chrome plugin for SteadyFlow, if you wish. This add a new menu option when you right-click a file.

Click this button and you’ll be shown a couple of options.

Set where you want the file to go and what you want to have happen when it’s done. Then get back to browsing, knowing your download is running outside of your browser session.

Install SteadyFlow

Ready to install SteadyFlow? Doing so in Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based variants is easy; just add the SteadyFlow PPA to your installation and install the “steadyflow” package. The simplest way to do this is with the command line and these three commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sikon/steadyflow
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install steadyflow

Users of other Linux distros will have to settle for source code for now; find it at the SteadyFlow Launchpad page to get started. If you’re not sure how to compile software you may be out of luck; sorry about that.

More To Come

Of course, there’s a good chance SteadyFlow will be in your distro’s package manager very soon. There are also certain to be many improvements to SteadyFlow, which I’m excited about: this is already a very useful piece of software.

Know of something better? Share it in the comments below, along with your thoughts about SteadyFlow. Oh, and if you’re not a Linux user, check out these alternative download managers for Windows and Mac OS X:

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/tucan-icon.png">Sites like RapidShare are a great way to quickly download files of any size, but they aren’t without their downsides. Downloaders usually need to wait for an arbitrary time before a download will begin, while advertisements for wait-free memberships look increasingly tempting. It’s not only annoying; the interface for doing so is usually downright confusing.

Skip this nonsense and get your files. Tucan Manager makes downloading files from single-click file sharing sites as simple as using BitTorrent to download files. The program bypasses the requirement to wait a minute or two before clicking on a download link, and can even queue multiple files for successive downloads if you like.

With support for 13 different single-click sharing sites, Tucan Manager will quickly become your go-to tool for downloading from sites like MegaUpload and MediaFire. Go ahead and download Tucan Manager for Linux, Mac and Windows, but keep reading to see what this program can do.

Using The Application

So you have a link to a file on the likes of RapidShare, but don’t have time to babysit the downloading process. No problem. Just file up Tucan Manager and click “Add Downloads“.

As you can see, all you need to do is paste your link. You can even post multiple links, if you want, with the use of a comma. Once you’ve entered your links you can test to make sure they work:

This will let you know whether the link you’ve copied is valid or not. Some files are taken down from these services (particularly illegal ones), so that might be the explanation for an error. If not, check to make sure your link is a valid one by visiting it with your browser. If this is possible but Tucan doesn’t work, keep reading to find out how to update your services.

Anyway, assuming your links are valid, Tucan will start downloading. The obligatory waiting period still happens:

But, unlike when you use RapidShare with your browser, you don’t need to wait until the waiting period is over. Heck, the program will even solve any captchas for you. Your download will happen automatically:

If you have multiple files set to download Tucan will work through them all in order without your input. This can make using these sites a lot easier, so enjoy!

Supported Sites

Which sites, you ask? Well, as mentioned, Tucan Manager supports 13 different sites as of this writing. These sites include:

4shared

megaupload.com

sendspace.com

zshare.net

filefactory.com

uploading.com

rapidshare.com

hotfile.com

badongo.com

fileserve.com

mediafire.com

depositfiles.coms

easy-share.com

Tucan Manager includes a nifty internal updating feature, meaning the scripts that enable downloading from these different sites are kept working for you. If one of these sites isn’t working check the “Service Configuration” panel in your preferences. If updates are available you’ll find them there.

Coming Features

What else could this program do? Well, uploading files.

The team at Tucan Manager say this feature is in the works, and there’s even a button on the main toolbar for doing so. Here’s hoping uploading is added soon, and Tucan becomes a complete manager for all things related to file sharing.

I always like finding programs that make life simpler, and Tucan certainly counts. If you want the hassle to be taken out of downloading certain files I highly recommend it. Do you like Tucan? Let us know in the comments below, and also feel free to recommend any other simple file sharing services.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/folxgiveaway.jpg" />Every internet user need a good download manager, one that could maximize and speed up the download process. This manager should also be able to manage the download results: automatically arrange the files into folders according to their types or other kind of pre-determined rules.

While there are quite a number of great download managers out there, the choices for Mac users are more limited. One of the best among them is Folx. And it comes with a twist: Folx is not just another file download manager, it’s also a torrent downloader.

Win 25 free copies of Folx PRO worth $500 in total from this week’s giveaway.

The Free Features

Folx is available for free. Aside from the ability to directly download any kind of files from the internet, Folx also supports torrent downloading.

But that’s not the only trick that it has up its sleeves, Folx users are able to manage their downloads using tags.

All of the downloaded items are be sorted using symlinks into categorized folders that correspond to the assigned tags. This feature makes it easy for users to find their downloaded items. All they have to do is to look for the items inside one of the tagged folders.

For example, if you tag a download with “application”, “utility”, and “Mac”; you can then access the download from folders titled “application“, “utility“, and “Mac“.

The Pro Features

All of the features offered by the free version are great and would surely enhance your downloading experience. But if that’s are not enough, you could get the Pro version with more features.

One of the Pro-only feature is the ability to split downloads in up to 10 threads and download each chunk simultaneously. This method will optimize the bandwidth usage and improve the download speed significantly.

Pro users will also appreciate the integrated ability to search for torrent files. To do that, start a new download and select the “Search for Torrents” tab. Enter the search string to find the file that you want, pick the one that matches your query from the search results, and click the “Add new task” button to begin the download.

There’s also the ability to set a download schedule and define Folx’s exiting behavior when it’s finished with the downloads: whether system shuts down, switches to sleep mode or just quits. You can customize this feature from the Preferences (Command + comma).

“Preferences” is also where you can adjust the “Speed Control“. You could choose among several settings: no limit, manual, and smart. You could also choose what applications these settings are applied to.

If you have to share your internet connection with several applications, you could limit Folx’s download and upload speeds.

If you want to get the Pro version with all the bells and whistles, you are in luck. MakeUseOf and Eltima Software are giving away 25 Pro licenses for the lucky ones among you – the readers.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/SoMud.jpg">A large majority of people still use their web browsers to download files from the internet ditching their download managers when internet speeds started increasing. Is that a wise move?

Let’s face the facts. Any internet browser slows down dramatically when downloading a large batch of files. In addition to that, these web browsers often use but a single connection to the download server – not even using your internet connection to its fullest potential – and support only some internet protocols.

Even with the most ridiculous add-ons to date, an internet browser just doesn’t make it a ‘real’ download manager, whether through lack of functionality, or because it’s being held back by its main feature; surfing the web. If you regularly have to work with large files, a download manager can work wonders. Meet SoMud.

SoMud

Actually, calling SoMud a download manager would be an injustice. SoMud is at home in many areas and we’ll try to cover the most prominent features in this article, but you can expect some pleasant surprise features if you start using the application. Nevertheless, downloading files is SoMud’s bread and butter and the context in which we’ll review the application.

SoMud is a cross-platform application, which means it’ll run on both Windows and Mac OS X. It is currently not available for Linux, although that might change in the future. You can use the application to download via HTTP/FTP and BitTorrent.

Torrent Search and Download

BitTorrent, one of the most famous (and notorious) examples of P2P, connects to a large swarm of fellow downloaders and puts available small parts of the file that has already been downloaded. This allows the download to happen without the interference of a file server, but also forces people to upload while they download.

Like all torrent applications, SoMud can start downloading when you open a .torrent file. Far less time consuming, you can use SoMud to search and download without leaving the application window, much like Vuze. The application automatically searches some of the more popular Torrent sites and aggregates the results. Using SoMud, people don’t have to jump to and fro between three applications, or even know much about P2P.

Using SoMud’s integrated search didn’t always produce the best results – you get those when you really know where to look, it was a feature I particularly enjoyed.

HTTP Download Manager

As mentioned, SoMud also sports HTTP (and FTP) download functionality. This works pretty much like you’d expect. SoMud breaks the file into a set number of pieces and requests server access for each one (shown below). Although this won’t improve your internet connection, it will add to the server-allocated speed, which is usually lower than your actual internet connection. You can also add multiple mirror URLs (different links to the same file) to improve download speeds.

Especially interesting when downloading audio and video, SoMud allows you to preview the file before it’s finished downloading. This option can be accessed from the download details, also shown above. If you’re worried about anonymity, you can even configure SoMud to download via proxy. All in all, an impressive array of features.

Online Video Download

Although not exactly aesthetically pleasing, SoMud can search different online video websites (e.g. YouTube) at once and syst the results. You can preview the video inside the application and add it as a download with the click of the button.

Personally, I think we’ve seen our fair share of YouTube downloaders, but it’s a good feature to top the list. With streaming video becoming ever popular, it won’t do to keep our focus completely on relatively old-fashioned file servers.

Do you use a download manager? Tell us why, and which application you prefer in the comments!
