  • Don’t Throw It Out Just Yet: 6 DIY Upcycling Websites That Show How To Repurpose Waste

    May 29, 2013

    upcycling-thumb

I am sure if you saw the Great Pacific garbage patch, you would get an idea of the waste we throw out as a species. It is just one of the concentrations of plastic and waste debris out there. We always talk about recycling or reusing old stuff to protect the environment. It's probably easier to send away stuff so that it gets recycled. It's slightly more difficult to adapt a DIY approach and reuse old throwaways in a newer way.

  • 5 Awesome DIY Tablet Mounts For Bed: Vote For The Best And We’ll Build It

    May 10, 2013

    featured-ipad-bed

I love my iPad so much, I take it to bed with me - and I don't think I'm alone (69% of British iPad owners also do, it seems). But resting it on my chest is far from ideal - I get neck cramps trying to look at the peculiarly angled screen, I certainly can't type, and any attempt to move knocks the thing right over. Since my significant other usually doesn't care for being face-palmed by an iPad while half asleep, it's about time I did something about it.

  • How I Built A Projector For My Phone

    May 2, 2013

    intro_iphone_projector

When I first saw Photojojo's DIY iPhone projector I was intrigued. The science behind it was sound in my mind, but I wondered how usable it really was. The only way to find out was to make one myself, but not content with simply making another website's tutorial I decided to change things a bit. What I ended up with is a slightly easier to use yet still ultimately hobbyist toy for iPhone photographers. Total cost? $4.50 for a magnifying glass and some duct tape.

    March 29, 2013

    featured-diy-arduino

I love my Arduinos. At any point, I have quite a few projects on the go - prototyping is just so easy with them. But sometimes, I want to keep the project functional without buying another Arduino. Spending $30 each time for a fairly simple microcontroller than I only need some of the functionality for is just silly. It's at that point that building an Arduino clone becomes a viable option.

  • Learn To Build Your Own Furniture With These Impressive Carpentry & Woodworking Resources

    February 8, 2013

Few things are as satisfying and relaxing as making something new with your own hands. Programming comes close, at least for me (and I've recently offered some tips on learning to code), but it's still quite different. Typing just isn't the same as clamping planks of wood together, drilling holes and watching something you've envisioned (or planned out in SketchUp) come to life. But where's a good place to start?

  • Need Network Storage? Here’s How To Build Your Own NAS Box

    January 18, 2013

NAS stands for Network Attached Storage. As Windows became easier to use with network attached devices, and hardware prices fell, this term started to be used in the consumer market. Today there’s a wide variety of off-the-shelf options that can provide storage for a home or small business network. The only problem is the price. A decent NAS can cost as much as a PC, which begs the question – why not build your own?
