<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/0-droidapp-intro.jpg" />One thing that Google likes to be known for is speed. In fact, their Android phones have taken off so fast that they have yet to release a full-featured app store to the public. While their current Android Market serves its purpose, it’s hardly iTunes. The organization and efficiency with which Apple runs its app store is one of the reasons the iPhone is the most popular phone on the market year in and year out.

I don’t imagine it will take Google very long to catch up (I did say they were fast), but until then, it would be nice to have some alternatives to finding killer apps for your Android phone.

In this article, I am going to share the top websites for finding the best Android applications. These sites should hold you over until Google releases their app store to the public.

[Note]: If you aren’t impressed by any of the apps you find in the Android Market, why don’t you try writing your own? Who knows, your app could end up on these websites in the near future.

Android Market

The current Android Market is a good place to start. As you’ll see, there isn’t too much organization here, but the site does display all of the top ranked applications and games. You can click on the Top Free tab, which allows you to view all of the top free apps by their respective categories.

Clicking on an app will display screenshots of it off to the right, as well as a small description of the application and the name of its developer(s). I’d assume that this would be the location of the future Google app store, but it’s hard to assume anything like that with Google.

AndroidZoom

Android Zoom is an even better alternative to the current Android Market in my opinion. Paul covered AndroidZoom in his 6 Android Websites You Should Check Out article back in January. (Also see AndroLib)

With AndroidZoom, you can view all of the latest Android applications and sort them by the newest, most popular, and highest rated. You can also separate them by free and paid, along with selecting from the different categories on the left-hand side of the page.

Click on an app and you are taken to a screen where you can view a short description, see related apps, and download. When you click Download, you are taken to a page that gives you three options.

You can use a QR code scanner and take a picture of the image (with your phone) to download the app, follow directions to manually install from the Android Market, or receive a direct download link on your phone’s email.

Cyrket

Cyrket provides application statistics for all of the apps in the Android Market. The default sort method is alphabetical, so don’t let it scare you when you visit the page and only see Chinese symbols. You can sort the listings by most expensive, least expensive, popularity, and highest rating. You can also opt to see only the free apps.

When you click on an app, you are taken to a screen with the app’s description, screenshots, and a long thread of users’ comments that you can use to get feedback.

101 Best Android Apps

101 Best Android Apps is another great place to get information and ratings on a lot of Android applications. Apps are sorted by many different categories (e.g. Business, Education) and topics (e.g. Music, News) and you can choose to see the best rated apps by day, week, month, or all time.

The site allows you to rate apps and it provides very nice, large screenshots. If you click more info, you can view a few more screen shots, a description, and comments.

AppBrain

AppBrain has lists and lists of Android apps. You can view all the hottest apps, the latest ones, or pick your favorite categories. Reviews and download information accompany the apps and you can utilize the search feature to find what you’re looking for.

If you create an account on AppBrain (links your Google account), you can enjoy added benefits. With an account, you can easily install and manage your apps directly from the web browser, sync your apps easily with their native Android app, and share the apps installed on your phone with your friends.

What do you think of the sites listed? Did I forget any? Will you be utilizing any of these resources for your Android application needs? Leave your thoughts, ideas, and comments below!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Open-Source-Logo.png" />To give you a short pitch on the importance of open source software let me place three well known names in front of you. They are ““ Mozilla Firefox, Wikipedia, and Linux.

Can anybody deny that these three (among many others) have not only changed the way we do our computing, but they have also become game changers?

That’s a huge dent in our mind space which otherwise is dominated by products from Microsoft and Apple.

These three are flag bearers of the open source software movement. Many others are running alongside (Apache Web Server, Symbian OS, OpenOffice, Arduino etc). Heading back to Wikipedia, we come to understand that the thinking on open source had existed since long before the internet gave the word a place in the dictionary.

Here we will talk about open source software. That’s any program or application that makes its source code freely available for use or alteration as others see fit. If you really want to get into the nitty gritty, check out what the guardians of the open source philosophy have to say at the Open Source Initiative.

Open source software is different from free software. But at the user level, for the layman, this distinction assumes less importance. Open source allows you to rewrite the code if you want to; free software does not and it comes with certain rights for the developer.

Most times, open source software is the seed for free software. So let’s check out what’s happening in the open source community. And as we look at these eight open source websites, let’s believe in Linus Torvalds’ vision – “the future is open source everything”¦”

SourceForge

You will find a mention of it in our archives as one of the better professional sample code websites for programmers. It is its bookmark worthy quality that takes it to the top of any list of open source projects. It is the world’s largest open source software development website. The sheer numbers – 2 million registered users and 230,000 software projects say that aloud.

For a developer, it is the Mecca with its range of tools that covers hosting, software support (trackers, forums, mailing lists, etc), distribution tools, and finally the help of a large community to fall back on.

As a downloader, you can browse through the software categories, or select using the most popular or most active tags.

Codeplex

Codeplex is Microsoft’s open source project hosting website. It has a large concentration of projects built around .Net. It also hosts a few projects which have non-open source licenses attached to them. Codeplex allows shared development in one project.

Support is provided with tools like a proprietary Codeplex source control software, wikis, and discussion boards. As of January, 2010, the site hosts nearly 13,000 projects.

Google Code

Google Code is a repository for Google’s APIs of its various products such as Google Maps, Google Earth, AdSense, Adwords, Google Apps and YouTube. Currently the site hosts nearly 250,000 open source projects.

You can download open source code and patches. Google Code has unique features like a mentoring program for university students (Google Summer of Code) and the Google Code University where students can learn new developments in technology.

Freshmeat

In their own words, Freshmeat has the web’s largest index of UNIX and cross-platform software, themes and related “˜eye-candy’, and handheld devices software. Mac users can find nearly 3,600+ projects related to their OS. Users can keep track of what’s new in Linux and UNIX by browsing through the nicely tagged projects. The articles on new software developments also keep users in the know. Freshmeat is owned by Geeknet, which also has Sourceforge.net in its lineup.

Open Source Living

OS Living is a neat collection house of open source software covering all major OS. The site has three areas ““ Archive, Community and Sourced. The Archive is the searchable index of open source software that is contributed by the open source developers. The Community is the forum where open source fans thrash out their ideas. Sourced is more like a blog bringing you news, views and updates from the world of open source.

Ohloh

Geeknet seems to have a lot of fingers in the open source pie as this is another community style website from their stable. With the important difference that Ohloh does not host open source projects. It is more like a public directory of the open source community and the software they develop.

Ohloh also has some tools which can be used to map out the trends in the open source universe. You can compare projects and measure the amount of activity that project is having. For example, you can see which language is the most popular in open source development. Also like a social site, you can follow developers whose work you are interested in.

Tigris.org

The tagline of this web resource reads – Open Source Software Engineering Tools. It has a few concentrated categories mostly around software development. The software may not be really useful for the average user, but computer students can find a lot of niche tools and reusable code in the categories mentioned.

The Free Software Directory

The Free Software Directory is a project of the Free Software Foundation (FSF) and UNESCO. It is a categorized index of free software that runs on free operating systems (GNU and Linux). FSD advocates the use of free software and through its activities seeks to counter restrictive policies such as Digital Restrictions Management (DRM).

There is no free lunch; so goes the popular saying. The abundant availability of free and open source software thankfully belies the fact. Just imagine a world where open source did not exist. It would have been such a narrow existence.

Imagine you would not have to go to work to work. Imagine you could work from home, from a nearby cafe, from the park, or from the beach somewhere far away. In other words, imagine you were free to work from anywhere.

This scenario is becoming increasingly real. Many people work in jobs that don’t rely on their physical presence since they can complete and submit their work electronically. Thus, they are free to work wherever they want. An essential ingredient for this freedom is wireless LAN or WiFi.

Besides, having access to the internet from anywhere is nice to have, even if you don’t need it for work. This article covers free WiFi sites that allow you to find hotspot locations near you.

Wi-Fi Hotspot Directory

This directory lists over 30,000 hotspots worldwide. The most prominent locations are Europe and North America with over 10,000 hotspots each. Not all of the listed hotspots are free.

To locate free WiFi locations near you, use the search form, where you can select your country and enter your state, city, or ZIP code. You can also specify an operator and the type of place you’re looking for, i.e. park or internet cafe. To find only free wifi hotspot sites and locations, be sure to tick the respective box!

The search form also provides a link through which you can browse all cities.

LaptopFriendlyCafes

Do you crave for a cafe that serves delicious coffee, offers free WiFi, and a power plugin for your laptop? Then you need to have a look at LaptopFriendlyCafes.com. Here you will find a list of places that offer the full service.

So far, their collection contains over 300 cafes, with most being situated in the cities London, New York, and Sydney. If you know another one anywhere in the world, please go ahead and submit it.

Do you have an iPhone? Get their iPhone app to spot cafes close to where you currently are.

WaiFi

This is a very easy to use WiFi hotspot finder that integrates Google Maps to show you exactly where to find a free wireless access point. Simply enter your location and check the Google map for WaiFi flags. A click on the flag will bring up details, i.e. the category, location, and carrier.

The site is powered by users. You can add WiFi hotspots easily by clicking the button at the bottom left of the map, which will bring up a WaiFi flag. Drag the flag to the exact location and fill in the details.

FREE-hotspot

A site similar to WaiFi is FREE-hotspot.com. It’s a little more convenient to use, albeit not as stylish. It also uses Google Maps and provides lots of useful information for WiFi beginners.

One very convenient feature is an indicator of whether or not a listed hotspot is currently active (green or red flag). Additionally, the list of all currently displayed WiFi locations is displayed in a menu on the left-hand side. An interactive filter menu pulls out from the top of the map on mouse-over and can be used to find specific hotspots.

Unfortunately, FREE-hotspot.com appears to cover fewer locations than WaiFi, at least for the places in North America, Europe, and Australia I checked.

Last year, David introduced 5 Wi-Fi Hotspot Finders To Find Free Wi-Fi Spots Near You. In this article he also covered WiFi-friendly chains and airports and linked to the following sites:

Chain restaurants with free wirless internet access

Wi-Fi-FreeSpot Directory – locations that offer Free WiFi

Free wifi airports

Do you own a PSP? Simon explained How To Use Your PSP WiFi Scanner To Find A Wireless Internet Hotspot.

Before you go out hunting for a free WiFi hotspot, however, make sure you’re all prepared. Karl reminds you of Things To Know When Using a WiFi Hotspot Or a Public PC and Ryan showed you 4 Free WiFi Software Downloads to Get Most of Wireless Networks. Both articles contain important security-relevant information.

Finally, if you’re wondering how wireless works in the first place, read Guy’s Technology Explained article on How Does Wireless Internet Work?.

You’ve probably heard of VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Those are the two main websites to visit if you’re in the market for a new Mac app for a certain purpose. Perhaps you don’t really know what’s good, or maybe you’re just not sure of what app in particular to get. These are basically the only instances to visit websites stated above, especially so if it’s a commercial app. Other times, when an app is free, there is barely any hesitation whatsoever — except, you’d need to know what to download.

Confused yet? Fret not, things are about to get much simpler.

I stumbled onto Bodega a couple of days ago and it got me wondering what the heck it was. Something like AppFresh, perhaps? But the description said, “Your neighborhood store.” What on earth could that mean? It wasn’t until after I downloaded it, only did I realize that it was an App Store for Mac (or call it Mac Apps Store). Something like that anyways.

Bodega takes the iTunes’ App Store and translates that idea for Mac applications. In other words, it’s a centralized Mac application store – a place to be exposed to new and interesting Mac apps.

I can’t help but be impressed by the design of Bodega. It even looks like a store. Hold and move the app around your screen and the signboards swing about! Alright, let’s take a short tour and I’ll show you how to use it.

As soon as Bodega launched, you’ll be presented with its Featured apps of the day as seen in the screenshot above. There will also be sections dedicated to showcasing New Releases, Shopkeeper’s Picks, Top Free/Paid Downloads. The Featured page is a fantastic way to be exposed to and try out new apps.

Click on a category from the list on the left and you’ll be presented with apps, laid out on shelves. Very shop-like. Click on an app and it will be lit by a spotlight.

To find out more about the app, either click on its label to switch between the name, price and rating. Or you could double-click on the app to be brought to its dedicated page where you can read more about it and view some screenshots.

If you see an app you like and if it’s free, click on the Download button and Bodega will retrieve it for you. No additional browser windows need to be opened. You can view the download process in the Applications page. Downloads are automatically saved in your Downloads folder, naturally.

If you happen to like a commercial app and decide to buy it, everything can be done within the app itself. In this example, I chose HoudahSpot and clicked on the Buy Now button. Bodega opened up the Houdah Software Store page and allowed me to complete the transaction without leaving the application.

Besides being an App Store, Bodega also keeps track of the apps you always have on your Mac. It will detect installed applications and then check to see if they’re up to date.

All in all, I consider Bodega to be a work in progress. It doesn’t feature enough apps to challenge the big boys like MacUpdate. It is a fantastic idea and I’d love to see it boom. If you’re a developer, submit your app to be featured in Bodega.

Where do you go to get your Mac apps?

With all the risks involved in using file sharing networks, browsing unprotected website directories is probably a lot easier and safer. Only when you start doing that do you realise half the stuff that people keep in their website folders (Sports Illustrated magazines!)

Then you start to realise how silly they are for not password protecting those folders and leaving them wide open for the whole world to walk in and take a look!

This might be really old news for a lot of people but I thought I would just quickly jot down the search parameters for finding files in unprotected website directories.

In case you don’t know, an unprotected website directory is a website that doesn’t have an “index” file created for it – index.htm, index.html, index.php. So if you try to access a website directory which doesn’t have a password controlling it or which doesn’t have an index page, you will be able to see a list of all the files and folders that are inside that directory. If you can see that, you can then click on the files and both download them and open them.

Here’s what a typical unprotected directory looks like :

Directories like these will have all kinds of files. Things like pictures, music, video files, documents, you name it.

Now you can do a general search and go through literally hundreds of thousands of these directories. But to do that sort of search is both time consuming and a bit mind numbing. But if you want to do it, just put into the search box (be it Google, Yahoo, whatever) the following search string :

-inurl(html|htm|php) intitle:”index of” +”last modified” +”parent directory” +description +size

This will bring up EVERYTHING and you can go hunting for whatever you can find. Good luck.

But don’t you want to be selective? Don’t you want to look for something in particular? Well, if so, you can change the search string to look for ONLY pictures or ONLY music or ONLY video. So….

-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:”index of” +”last modified” +”parent directory” +description +size +(wmv|avi)

This will only look for wmv and avi video files. You can easily alter it if you don’t want “wmv” or “avi” or if you want “mpg” instead. You get the idea.

-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:”index of” +”last modified” +”parent directory” +description +size +(jpg|gif)

This will only look for jpg and gif files. Again, you can alter the file formats to suit yourself.

-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:”index of” +”last modified” +”parent directory” +description +size +(wma|mp3)

This will only look for wma and mp3 music files. Again you can easily change the file formats to suit yourself.

Just put the search string you need into the search engine box. Then hit the ‘enter’ button and your results will come up. I guarantee you’ll be hooked for ages trying to see what you can find! You can also put a certain search term after your file format so :

[-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:"index of" +"last modified" +"parent directory" +description +size +(jpg|gif) "britney spears"]

Obviously you are not going to get perfect results. You are going to have to wade through a lot of irrelevant and useless stuff some of the time but quite often you do find a lot of good stuff too. It’s quite fun peeking into people’s unprotected folders seeing what they have stashed away. Stuff like embarrassing photos, drunken videos, “provocative” material, and much more.

Some people have embedded these search algorithims into software which makes it easier to search for files. One of them is Clickster which I reviewed last May. It searches for MP3′s in peoples unprotected directories and it has a very nice simple GUI.

Some of you might say what right do we have to go browsing through people’s website folders? But look at it this way – these people posted this stuff online – in an unprotected unsecure website folder. It’s as if they are asking for it to be found. They are making no effort to keep it hidden or secure and putting it out on the World Wide Web is the most stupidest thing in the world to do if you want to keep something private and hidden.

So go out there, find it and enjoy it. Oh and let us know in the comments some of the stuff you managed to find in your searches.
