Windows 8 is going to be big news when it is launched in late 2012, with websites, magazines, newspapers and TV shows dedicating column inches and reports on the latest consumer operating system from Microsoft. As you’re probably already aware, Windows 8 will feature a version of the Metro UI, the tile-based user interface currently found on the Xbox 360 console and Windows Phones.

I work online, and when the Internet is your workplace then you know things move fast. You’ve got to keep up with trends and you’ve got to be on the ball or you might miss out on opportunities, excitement, or (in my case) money. Feed Notifier does a fantastic job of delivering RSS notifications more effectively than any software I’ve used. It doesn’t matter if you’re an entrepreneur or just someone who likes to keep up to date with the news.

When you are working on a computer, it takes a fair bit of will power to resist the attempt to multitask. But even if you manage to restrain yourself, many programs manage to throw in distracting notifications that will divert your attention. Especially after setting up a new computer or re-installing, it can be a pain to track down the common offenders and turn off annoying focus killers.

I’m sure that you’ve come across a computer like this, especially a laptop or netbook. The screen is decently large, but the low resolution doesn’t seem to fit well with such a nice screen. Are you stuck with whatever the native resolution is? Apparently not, as there is a simple script that will take care of the problem and increase your resolution beyond what your system considers as normal!

Based on what I’ve seen, Stickies (the desktop version – not the dashboard) is a built-in Mac app that doesn’t seem to get a whole lot of love. However, in all truth, it’s actually an extremely useful tool whether you want to use it for a long-term project or something simply short term. As a virtual form of the standard office sticky note, it definitely packs a punch.

There’s absolutely no denying the fact that there has been a lot of bickering between people about which desktop environment is the best. The discussion has been expanded and refocused, from not just Gnome vs. KDE but now Gnome Shell vs. Unity, two desktop environments that are both dependent on the Gnome framework. However, Gnome Shell has finally started to build itself a place in my heart, while Unity has not.

I love Windows. It’s somewhat hard for me to say this, having grown up with a Mac and having hated every single Windows version up till Win2k, but Microsoft are really getting better at this, and I would not give up my Windows 7 for anything. This doesn’t mean that Windows is perfect. Sometimes there are things you want to do that simply don’t come built into Windows.
