Boxee fans – it’s over. There may be more fun to have with the Boxee Box, but Boxee on the desktop isn’t coming back. It’s time to find something else if you have a computer hooked up to your television.

We should have seen it coming. There was an entire year between updates for desktop users, during which things continued to break. Certain shows stopped working, apps slowed down or broke entirely and new features appeared only on the Boxee Box. We put up with it. We loved Boxee, and wanted it to keep growing the way it did back in 2009 and 2010. We watched some shows in our browser, and used Navi X to fill in the gaps. Apps still worked, for the most part, and local playback was still decent.

During the summer of 2011 we were told we’d get an update in autumn. Months went by, autumn wound down; Boxee users grew impatient. Then, right around Christmas, Boxee released a new, bug-ridden version for Linux, Mac and Windows only to also announce this was the final desktop version ever to be released: developers will from now on focus only on the Boxee Box and software for other set-top devices.

This makes sense. Boxee is a small company, and can’t spend money developing its program for every platform under the sun. Other than consumer devices Boxee doesn’t have much of a revenue stream, and millions of dollars in venture capital means Boxee needs to be profitable, soon.

So the desktop version’s decline was inevitable. Still, a total lack of updates leaves me feeling betrayed. I, and the large number of Boxee early adopters, sincerely felt like we were part of the team. We tested the software, provided feedback and helped promote the platform. Boxee kept releasing clever hacks to keep Hulu working for free, and promised they would always do that.

Those days are long gone, and it’s time for all desktop Boxee users to buy a box or find a new home.

Story Of A Boxee User

I’m what you might call a Boxee fanboy. I’ve been using the program since its alpha release, and spent a great deal of time telling my friends and family they should be using it instead of cable. I wrote an excessively glowing review of Boxee’s beta back in early 2010, and a series of follow-up articles after that. Boxee was the recreational program I used more than anything else.

If anyone should be excited about the current release of Boxee, it’s me. I’ve forgiven its shortcomings many times, looking back, because I always believed things would keep getting better.

Not this time. The 1.5 release of Boxee for the desktop is buggy and frustrating. Most of the online shows I tried to watch didn’t work or didn’t launch in full screen. Support for Netflix, Hulu and more are dropped from the desktop version, meaning I need to turn to NaviX to watch many movies and shows. And a variety of apps simply don’t work any more.

I could say more, but it’s all been said in the Boxee forum, where users are openly discussing what program to switch to. None of these bugs would be a huge problem if updates were coming. The problem is they’re not. So it’s time to find something new.

Why Not Buy A Box?

So why don’t I support the program I love by buying a Boxee Box? Because I have a computer hooked up to my TV, which I use for a lot more than just media. I play games on it with a couple of joysticks, share files from it to my other computers and use it to test lots of different software.

Why not add a Boxee Box as well? Because I don’t want to take up more space with an unnecessary device. I’d be more than happy to pay for the privilege to use Boxee on my computer, and I think I’m not alone. At it’s best, Boxee worked better than anything out there. But I don’t want another device cluttering up my living room.

Boxee claims people like me are around for now, but won’t be for long: people are finding dedicated boxes to be better for the job. That may be the case. I get it. But if Boxee can’t support its desktop users anymore, how do I know they’ll keep supporting their box users? It’s not a completely fair question, but I can’t be the only person asking it.

What To Use Instead

After seeing how awful the new Boxee is, last night I bit the bullet and installed XBMC. And I’m telling you: I should have done that months ago.I got my favorite plugins, Reddit TV and Navi X, working in no time. I found a plugin for streaming shows from CBS, NBC and all the major networks, and it works flawlessly in a way Boxee hasn’t for years.

Yes, it’s not as well organized. Yes, the interface is harder to use. But it works, and it’s actively being maintained. Check out XBMC or read our most recent review.

A program I want to check out, but haven’t yet, is Plex. Since our last review Plex was updated to run on Windows natively, and I can’t wait to try it out. Feel free to let me know your thoughts about Plex below.

Conclusion

The Boxee team said it all: “We would not be where we are today without you. But we can’t stay here.”

I understand the sentiment, but will miss Boxee. You did web video well before you needed to make money, and standing up to big companies and hacking to keep stuff working is what made that great. Oh well, there are lots of new programs to try out with lots of clever programmers.

Can you think of something else I need to play with? Give me your thoughts in the comments below, because this recovering Boxee user needs ideas. I’ll be hanging out with you guys below.

Facebook Messenger for Windows, which has apparently been in the oven for some time, has leaked to the web earlier this week. Facebook’s way to deal with this crisis was to officially release the app for download without further delay.

Facebook Messenger for Windows, available for Windows 7 only at this time, is a way for you to stay connected to Facebook chat, updates and news ticker, without having to leave your browser open. To start, you will need to log into Facebook using the browser, and then allow Facebook to keep you logged in. This means you will stay logged into Facebook even when you close the browser. This is necessary for the app to continue giving you desktop notifications. If you want to log out, you’d need to do so from the app.

Facebook Messenger for Windows is currently no more than a carbon copy of your news ticker and chat sidebar, only you don’t have to have a browser open to view it. As it is, it’s apparent why Facebook was not ready to release Facebook Messenger officially. When I tried it, the app did not work very well, and the Log In button, while it did divert me to facebook.com, did not have much of an effect otherwise. In short, I was not really able to log into the app. This may be a localized problem, as the app does work on other computers.

If you’re curious and have been craving Facebook notification on your desktop, you can download the new app from here.

If you are a user of Boxee on your home computer, I have some good news and some bad news. I will start with the good news, after all, we all enjoy the happy stuff. They have issued a major overhaul to the service with their latest update. It changes nearly everything about the user interface. The home screen is new, the main menu is new, they added rotten tomatoes ratings, and so much more. If you want a complete rundown on everything that is changed, check out the official release notes. For Boxee users, this update is awesome.

Now, while this update is great, I also mentioned bad news which is that this will be the last update for the computer based Boxee. They believe that the set-top box is the future, and they are going to abandon their desktop interface. This update is great, but as issues arise in the future, there won’t be much that can be done.

“People will continue to watch a lot of video on their computer, but it is more likely to be a laptop than a home-theater PC and probably through a browser rather than downloaded software” the developer explained.

They plan to host the new version on their website through January. After that, you will have to seek other mirrors to download the application.

What do you think? Is the set-top box the way of the future and is Boxee right to abandon the desktop interface? Or are they making a big mistake? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Facebook Chat has become an important tool for keeping in touch with friends. In fact, I would go so far as to say that in comparison to the other features on Facebook (news feed, photo albums, etc.) I think Facebook Chat is vastly underrated.

But…you know what you and I – and most of the people we know – have in common? We all hate how Facebook has been messing with our chat setup. First, they made the chat bar a permanent fixture on the right side of my screen. Then they messed with the people I had listed there, only showing me my “top connections” who may or may not be online. Currently, I can scroll down to see “more friends online”, but it still feels like a work in progress.

I understand why Facebook is doing this. Chat is becoming the primary way we IM our friends, and having those conversations keeps us on the site longer, so keeping the chat open and displaying our top connections, theoretically, should increase our chat time, et cetera, et cetera. But I would still like to be able to see everyone in one place. Who’s with me?

What Is fTalk?

fTalk is a standalone desktop chat client for Facebook. It’s fast, accessible, free, and it notifies you when friends come online. You can also update your status right from the app, so you can post and interact with friends without so much as even attempting to open your browser and visit Facebook.

Here’s what I really like about fTalk – it was designed to make it easier for you and I to keep in touch with our friends. And, “if you would like to send in ideas for new features, or any other requests or comments, [they'd] be happy to hear from you – [they] read every message [they] get.” Now that’s what I’m talking about.

According to their website, fTalk started out as just a simple messenger application, but has since become rather popular thanks to the inclusion of new features being added regularly.

What Can I Do With fTalk?

As a chat client, fTalk has a pretty clean interface. When one of your contacts comes online, you will see a system tray notification about it, and once you have the client open you’ll notice that your online and offline contacts are separately aligned (just the way we like it).

When you first install the app, you will obviously need to enter your Facebook credentials to sign in, which will take you to the authorization page in your browser. Once logged into Facebook Chat, you can double click your friends’ names to initiate a conversation.

You can also view friends’ profiles, photos, and Facebook messages (on your default browser) through options located on your chat window. You can also update your status from the text box located above the search bar.

Conclusion

I’m excited about this app. It has a very minimalist feel to it and is pretty clean. I’m looking forward to seeing future progress and updates with it.

If you’ve been following the pretty intense battles between the many different browsers, as well as the subtle but still important operating system battles, you’ll know that people are definitely scattered all over the place with their favorite choices. Email clients aren’t any exception either, as you’ll find people use various tools to manage their email, the two most popular being the Gmail website and the Thunderbird desktop app.

Today we’ll be looking at a top KDE choice that has plenty to offer for those of you who crave some power and control over their applications.

About KMail

KMail is the default email client of the KDE desktop environment, which is available on a number of platforms, although primarily known for being on Linux. KMail ties into the KDE PIM suite, or KDE Personal Information Management suite, which is a collection of different programs, including KMail, personal organizers, and more.

The entire suite helps tie together the different functions of each program so that it becomes easier to use each one. Contacts can therefore be shared between Kmail and Korganizer, a calendar app. In the same way, events mentioned in an email can easily be added to your calendar on Korganizer with a single click. As KDE aims to be both elegant and powerful, you’ll have to expect a lot of different features and customization options for the KMail program.

Installation

If you’re running KDE, KMail should already be installed by default. If you’re running another desktop environment but wish to use KMail, you’ll need to install your distribution’s package for either KMail (if it’s packaged separately and therefore exists under that name), or kdepim. You’ll also need to accept the installation of the dependencies needed for the package.

Getting Started

Unlike GNOME‘s Evolution email client, you’ll find KMail in the Internet category of your menu instead of the Office category. Once you launch KMail, you’ll be greeted by the Tip of the Day followed by the Account Wizard. If that did not open, you can add your email account under Tools –> Account Wizard. Here you can enter in your information as is necessary. The instructions should not any different from say Outlook, as it’s all the same basic information (IMAP/POP3, SMTP, etc.).

Unique Features

KMail has an interesting feature know as identities. Identities lets you choose under what name, email address, and other information you would like to send an email with. This is helpful when sending emails for both personal and professional purposes. If you have multiple email accounts you will need to use identities so that you can send out from each email account. You can find it as well as any other KMail settings under Settings –> Configure KMail.

Speaking of the Configure KMail window, if you explore a bit you’ll find that there are a lot of options to configure. Not only can each account and identity be tweaked to perfectly suit the configuration that you want, but nearly every aspect of KMail can be changed as well. This can range from anything such as changing settings for the composer (including modifying templates), to the overall appearance of KMail, to a multitude of security features, some of which I’ve never even heard of. While competitors such as Thunderbird are perceived as highly configurable, KMail can wipe the floor with Thunderbird hands down in that category. There are enough features packed in here that virtually all Thunderbird add-ons would be redundant. If you can think of it, you can probably tweak it with KMail.

KMail makes excellent use of threaded conversation views, and offers all sorts of different ways to view the threads, as well as their ordering. If you want you can also turn off threaded conversations completely. Here, you can have your cake and eat it too.

This wonderful email client also makes great use of tabs. Instead of automatically opening new tabs whenever something is opened, tabs are used more as workspaces. Therefore, only you can make more tabs, and you can choose which folder or message to view in each tab. This is great if you wish to have a tab open for personal, professional, and other accounts all at the same time.

Finally, KMail is proactive right out of the box by taking an anti-spam and anti-virus approach. Under the Tools menu you’ll find a wizard for each one to help configure the settings required to get those two components in working order. This is a great feature that isn’t included in most other Linux email clients that I know of.

Conclusion

KMail is a fantastic email client that does everything you need it to do. It is well designed and packed with built-in features. It even offers automatic support for GPG keys, so you can sign and encrypt your email securely and easily. Simply put, this is one heck of a powerhouse that can treat you like a God when configured right. If you’re a KDE user but haven’t tried out KMail, I highly suggest you do so before going back to your old client or website.

You may also find that although Kmail works fine in previous releases of KDE, the program has received plenty under the hood changes to run better and tie in better with Akonadi, the personal information framework that allows all the sharing of information between certain programs to take place.

What do you use as your email client (Gmail’s website included)? Do you feel like there’s something better out there? Let us know in the comments!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/image2.png">I’m a proud Google Apps user. I love the platform, and it adds a lot of value to my domain. But sadly, Google has not yet deemed it worthy of Google Profiles. You can’t create a Google Profile for your Google Apps account. This in turn means you can’t use Google+ with your Google Apps account. Which means you need to use an annoying solution such as Multiple Sign-In or running concurrent browser sessions.

GClient is a Google Plus desktop client, actually a mini-browser of sorts, just for Google Plus. It is not without its faults, but it does save you from running multiple browser sessions. It’s not an ideal solution for everyone, but it might be useful for some.

The first thing you see when running GClient is a suspicious-looking window asking for your name and email address:

The developer seems to be using the app as a way to get people’s names and email addresses. Not the most confidence-inspiring tactic I’ve seen. As you can see above, I just gave them a disposable email address instead. It worked – I got my “free unlock code” and they didn’t get my real email. After entering my unlock code, I was presented with a small login window (Google’s own, not the app’s), and then shown this:

That’s right – GClient is just a way to access the Google+ mobile interface. It seems like a lame solution at first (what, no funky dedicated interface?), but on second thoughts, I can see the logic in doing something like this. Google+ is still in flux, there’s no public API yet, and no real way to poll the service for updates or post new updates. So the only real way to provide “standalone” access is not standalone at all – it’s just the same service in a different format.

Here’s what the feed looks like:

Basically, if you’ve ever used Google+ from a mobile device, you will know what this looks like. But in case you haven’t, here are a few other screenshots of the mobile interface. This is how you post an update:

And this is what a friend’s profile looks like:

The only thing which isn’t stock Google in this app is the Options panel, which looks like this:

Note that the Google Plus desktop client is set to auto-start by default. If you don’t like such behavior, this is where you go to disable it.

So Is It Good Or Not?

I know this post may seem a bit conflicted. I’m used to writing more positive reviews, but then again, I’m used to applications that don’t require your email to send you a “free unlock key” on startup. But GClient finds itself in a unique position of being the only solution in town, at least for now. If you have a Google Apps account and still want to take part in Google+, GClient is the way to go.

Its basic approach is reasonable. If the developer dropped the email requirement and added a global hotkey for popping up the interface, GClient would be much better. As it stands, it’s OK, but it leaves the playing field wide open to any enterprising developer who wants to present a slicker solution. Would that be you, by any chance?

Let us know what you think of GClient in the comments.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/0_multimi.jpg">How much time do you spend inside your web browser every day? Probably a lot, especially if you have an active inbox and belong to multiple social networks. Between chatting with friends, posting photos, updating statuses, reading emails, and sending calendar invites, you may get burnt out just trying to keep up with all of that activity at once. And let’s not forget about all of the tabs you have to open and passwords you have to enter just to access everything. Can’t we just get everything we need all in one place?

Well, now you can. In this article, I’m going to show you a badass new free desktop app that makes sharing and socializing across your email accounts and social networks a breeze. If any of what I just said resonated with you in any way, you will not want to miss this app!

What Is MultiMi?

MultiMi provides users with access to online services including email, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Flickr, Picasa, and file storage services in one location. It was created by Zbang, which is a company that provides “simple and efficient solutions for managing the overwhelming quantity of content that people share on a daily basis.”

With MultiMi, you can :

Share content like photos, music, and video.

Collaborate on documents with others via Box.net or Google Docs.

Connect Facebook Chat and Google Talk for instant messaging.

Keep up to date with the latest Twitter trends and all the Facebook pages you like.

Store and share files through cloud storage services simply by dragging and dropping.

Run searches across all your emails, networks, desktop, and the web.

Manage, share, and sync all your contacts and calendars.

You may have noticed “AVG” in the title of this article. That’s because MultiMi also incorporates AVG LinkScanner, which automatically checks links exchanged through MultiMi in real time. Before you even click a link, AVG LinkScanner has already assessed the risk profile of anything you’ve received.

MultiMi is available for Windows XP SP3 or higher and it requires 1 GB of RAM (which everybody should have) and 500 MB free hard disk space.

Getting Started with MultiMi

To start using MultiMi for all that I mentioned, head over to their homepage and download the app.

When you first start the application, you can add an account on the startup screen. Feel free to add your email account(s), Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Once you do that, you’ll notice that the main dashboard is divided into different sections:

Messages will be where you access all of your email, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn messages.

Social gives you news updates from Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Events shows your upcoming events from Google Calendar and Facebook.

Photos will pull in your photos from Facebook, Picasa, and email attachments.

Media is where all the music and video you’ve shared will be.

Files will house all of your documents, etc.

Contacts will display people you frequently talk to or email.

To view your messages, just click on Messages in the left panel and the center area will populate with messages from the accounts you’ve added. To compose a message, just click the Share button at the top of the screen and select Compose Message. You can also select the account you would like to send your message from and the contacts it is going to.

If you want to post a status update to an account, you can select Update Status and choose the account to post to. To upload images or files, click the Upload button.

And don’t forget, the app also supports GTalk and Facebook Chat, so you can communicate with your contacts directly while inside the application as well.

Conclusion

So basically, MultiMi allows you to stay connected and keep organized in a secure way, all from your desktop. Now you can kiss all those tabs in your browser goodbye!

What do you think of MultiMi? What’s the one feature you’re most excited about?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/00a_webrunner_logo.jpg">It seems that everybody in the tech world thinks the future is in the cloud. Using faraway cloud servers, computer users can open applications anywhere via any browser no matter what the operating system is and what the computer/device specifications are.

The problem is, we are not completely living in that future yet. Most people are still not ready to leave their desktop to go to the cloud. Opening cloud applications inside a browser doesn’t feel like opening an application at all. Those web applications may easily be ‘lost’ among many other open tabs, and continuously looking for them may be a bit annoying.

That’s why some people would love the ability to turn web apps into desktop programs, which you can open independently. One of the tools that you can use to do that is called WebRunner. We mentioned this extension a few years ago, back when it was called Prism.

From The Webtop To The Desktop

The first thing you have to do is open the WebRunner page with Firefox. Then download the extension that matches your operating system. As far as I know, a Firefox extension should work fine under Windows, Mac, and Linux, so I don’t know why they created three different versions for these three OS’s.

Please bear in mind that I took screenshots for this article using Firefox for Mac. There might be some slight differences if you are using another OS.

Confirm the installation by clicking the “Install Now” button. You will need to restart Firefox before you can use the extension.

You can enable (and disable) the extension by going to the “Add-ons” menu under “Tools“.

Armed with WebRunner, converting web apps or any other kind of webpage into desktop apps is as easy as clicking a few buttons.

There are lots of web apps out there, and the number seems to multiply every day. At the time of writing, one of the hottest web apps in the virtual world is Google Plus. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on the invite, why don’t you try to convert Google Plus into a desktop app using WebRunner?

First, visit Google Plus using Firefox.

Then click “Create WebRunner App” under the “Tools” menu.

The “Web Application” window will open. There are several things you can customize in this window, such as the URL, the name, and which browser elements you want to show in the desktop application.

You can add a shortcut on the Desktop and/or Applications Folder (or Program Files in Windows) for easier access if you want to. But I think you should at least put a shortcut in one of those locations. You can uninstall the application simply by deleting the shortcut.

As for the application’s icon, you can use the default icon that comes with the web app by choosing “Use image from web” from the drop down menu. The “Choose image” option will allow you to browse your hard drive for your preferred image. Click “OK” to finish the process.

In case you are wondering, the Google Plus icon that I use came from David Walsh’s site

Then the desktop application will be ready inside your application folder. You can do every action that you normally do with your desktop applications with this new app. You can start the application with your OS, assign shortcut keys to quickly summon it, and the most important one – launch it without having to launch your browser.

This is what the Google Plus desktop app looks like. The first time you open it, you will be asked to log into your Google account. You don’t have to repeat the login process as long as you don’t wipe the cookies.

Other Web Apps

You can repeat the process to convert other web apps or your favorite websites/blogs into desktop apps. The first web app that came to my mind is Angry Birds Chrome. I converted it out of curiosity to see whether the game would be saved if I quit the app and restarted it later. It turns out that I could continue from where I left off!

There’s a similar tool for Mac called Fluid which uses Safari to power the converted desktop app.

Have you used WebRunner? What web apps would you turn into desktop programs? Share your list using the comments below.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Readnow-300x300.png">You can’t always read things you find online straight away. Sometimes you see great links in Twitter only to remember that you really should finish your work for the day before you start reading those articles. This is why so many of us use services like Instapaper and Read-It-Later – we love to get home and just cruise through all the interesting stuff we didn’t have time to read before.

But if anything could make these delayed reading services just a tiny bit better, it’s the thought of accessing those articles via a native Mac application. With a native app, there’s no need to log in when you use it and it looks great on your Mac. Thankfully, there is now such an app called ReadNow. We thought you might be interested, so here’s the details.

Why Get ReadNow?

This application is for you if you’re a Mac user who loves native applications, uses Read-It-Later or Instapaper to store articles for later reading, doesn’t want to log in repeatedly and wouldn’t mind a menu bar icon for easy access. To get an account for Read-It-Later or Instapaper, sign up directly with the service you prefer. Instapaper users will need to have a subscription with Instapaper in order for ReadNow to work.

You can use the ReadNow application for both parts of the reading later process — easily adding articles via the application or reading them in the minimalist view later. As well as opening the articles for reading, you can also move, archive and edit the articles, depending on which service you choose.

The pane for reading the articles is a clutter-free minimalist design, ensuring you read without the distractions of regular online articles. The article list comes in three different themes: light grey, yellow and dark grey.

ReadNow runs on Mac OS X 10.6+, costs US$3.99 from the Mac Appstore and is also available via the ReadNow website.

Using ReadNow

It’s so easy to use ReadNow. The best feature is being able to add a new article by a number of useful and easy methods:

Using a keyboard shortcut to add the URL of your browser’s current tab to ReadNow.

Dragging a URL from your browser directly on to the ReadNow icon in the menu bar.

Copying a URL to the pasteboard and add it to ReadNow using a keyboard shortcut.

You can also use the Read-It-Later or Instapaper web interface, bookmarklets, scripts and browser extensions to add articles during the day at work, then read articles later in ReadNow.

Arrow keys can be used to navigate the articles and there’s a keyboard shortcut to launch ReadNow.

ReadNow can also allow you to save the text and images of each article for offline reading.

You can choose whether to archive your articles automatically or manually. Articles can also be tagged and “liked” for future access easily using ReadNow.

Do you prefer to use Read-It-Later or Instapaper? Will you be giving ReadNow a try? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/0_geemail.jpg">Gmail is now the only email service I use. It’s fast, extremely simple, has a lot of great features, and it has everything I’m looking for from an email client. Google Labs alone makes Gmail worth giving a try if you haven’t used it before, and there are plenty of third party add-ons you can utilize as well. Just recently, in fact, I showed you TaskForce, which gives you an easy way to convert Gmail emails into tasks.

One of the things I’ve always liked about Gmail was that it was the first true cloud app I got used to accessing. Being completely browser based, it helped me transition from desktop apps to web-based ones, possibly because there simply weren’t any desktop email clients that could live up to what Gmail offered, at least for me, anyway.

That no long holds true now that I’ve found GeeMail. GeeMail is a standalone Gmail desktop client for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it’s a great answer for your offline needs.

What Is GeeMail?

GeeMail runs on Adobe AIR (cross-platform), and it looks and feels a lot like the Gmail that you’re used to. Since GeeMail supports the old UI of Gmail itself, things just work the way they do in Gmail, even the keyboard shortcuts.

With GeeMail, you can view all of your mail and even reply to messages while offline. When you do, your replies will be sent the next time the application detects that you are connected to the Internet.

Gmail tried to give users an offline solution using Gears, but GeeMail is a lot faster. It can grab hundreds of your most recent messages within minutes. It can do this because it only pulls in the bare essentials. Gmail’s labeling structure, for instance, won’t be pulled in by GeeMail unless you are online.

There is no configuration with GeeMail. The program has everything in place which is required to access your Gmail, meaning you don’t need to configure POP and IMAP settings like traditional email clients.

GeeMail also has a search feature, which I believe is newly added. You can search emails regularly, or click on Advanced Search to do things like search only messages from or to a specific person.

How Do I Use GeeMail?

To get started with GeeMail, just head over to their website and click the Free Download button. The client will install with Adobe Air and the first time you run it you will see a login screen that looks strikingly similar to Gmail’s online login page. Type in your credentials to log in and get your mail.

GeeMail will take a minute to connect to your Gmail account and load, but once it does you will have all of your email and labels in the app to begin viewing.

Conclusion

As with any email client, GeeMail takes a bit of getting used to, but once you have it where you feel comfortable, it’s quite useful for you. I will be sticking with the online version of Gmail, but this presents a nice offline solution for me if I ever need to read something important when my Internet connection goes down.

What do you think about Gmail desktop software or desktop email clients in general? Do you have a favorite app? Let us know what you think about this one and whether you see yourself using it, instead of the web-based Gmail.
