Craigslist first graced the Internet in 1995, and after exploding in popularity soon established itself as an online mainstay for the foreseeable future. 17 years on, and the service is still the number one choice for many when it comes to classified ads, services, personals and the occasional rant and rave.

Despite the trademark black-and-white simple design, Craigslist is not streamlined for mobile devices. This makes both browsing and posting classifieds a bit of a nightmare from your iPhone. Luckily, there’s an app (or three) for that.

Before We Begin

The three apps I’ve chosen are, in my experience (and according to favourable App Store reviews) the best ways of browsing Craigslist from an iPhone without spending money. Unfortunately nearly all of them have vague names, sometimes incorporating other names within them – making them hard to find.

In addition to a link to the App Store, I’ve noted the developer in brackets so you can check to make sure you’re grabbing the right version. Believe me – there are more Craigslist apps on the App Store than any of us will ever need.

Craigslist Free (Lifelike Apps Inc.)

Featuring a stylish presentation that really makes boring old Craigslist look exciting and easy to read, Craigslist Free is a highly capable CL solution for iPhone. The app mimics a daily newspaper’s classifieds in its design, an aesthetic choice which suits the service to a tee and provides some useful extra functionality.

Along the bottom of the screen are five tabs – Location (for choosing alternate cities, worldwide), Categories (for browsing), Favourites (limited to just two in the free version), Font (for changing text size quickly) and another menu called Post, etc for uploading an ad. Posting from the app is a relatively painless affair that’s possible with or without a CL account and comes complete with an image upload option.

Browsing adverts is as easy as you’d expect, and there are a few more tricks to help you on your way. In order to add a favourite, simply circle the classified with your fingers (as you would with a pen in a newspaper) or hide an advert altogether by scribbling it out. The limitation of only having two favourites makes this rather nice feature a bit useless, though you can hide as many ads as you like by scribbling.

My main complaint about this app is the image sizing. Pictures look great in an advertisement’s title, but once you’ve clicked the advert they’re relegated to tiny thumbnails afoot the screen. It would be nice to have tappable images that could be easily zoomed or even shared. Aside from the odd crash, this is all I can find to complain about. If you’d like to buy the paid version (no adverts, unlimited favourites) then you’ll find it here for $0.99.

Craigslist Mobile (YYH Creative)

Two different developers, two different apps, two very similar names. The first Craigslist Mobile on this list is an advert-supported app with all the functionality of the website. The presentation of this app isn’t quite as polished as the previous, but the classifieds are easy to read and the app comes with little in the way of limitations.

Three main tabs – search, favourites and post – separate the main functions and the whole process is kept very simple indeed. Searching through sub-categories is fast and painless thanks to the quick-access to the main sections on the right-hand side. Once tapped adverts are formatted very much like the iOS Mail app and easy to share or favourite using the bar along the foot of the screen.

Unlike Craigslist Free (above) photos seem a bit stretchier, often filling the width of the screen and providing a decent eye-full. If I had to pick a complaint it would be that perhaps the app is a bit dull to look at, and at times it feels like there’s just too much text on screen. That’s pretty much all I can think of for negatives, and I don’t even mind staring at a few ads considering the functionality provided.

Craigslist Mobile For iPhone (Escargot Studios, LLC)

Another full-blown browsing and posting client, Craigslist Mobile For iPhone is an ad-supported CL app with some interesting features. The app allows filtering of classifieds by parameters such as whether a photo is included, price range and sorting. Results are displayed tidily either in list view with text or via photos.

Classifieds are well-laid out, with large images and even an option to report the listing. It’s also easy to save or view an item on the map using the bar at the bottom of the screen. Posting to Craigslist is also included, though unfortunately the option to advertise without a CL account is absent. For those without an account there is an option to register in-app.

A few things have been niggling me whilst playing with Craigslist Mobile For iPhone and one is the constant, laborious reminders that I can purchase Craigslist Ultimate for extra features – I just don’t care, I’m not going to buy it (certainly not after being constant told to do so). The other is the fact that functions are displayed above searches that require another app to be purchased (Craigslist Ultimate again) in order to use.

Conclusion

It’s quite tough to choose between these apps, as each has its own quirks and drawbacks. The first (Craigslist Free) is hands-down the best looking of the bunch, its iBooks-esque approach and newspaper design is eye catching and pleasant to read. The second app (Craigslist Mobile) is unrestricted, fairly plain and entirely functional whereas the final app on the list draws the line somewhere between the two.

Let us know what you think, which you prefer or if there are any other Craigslist applications that you swear by in the comments, below.

While browsing Craigslist for various items that may or may not relate to illegal activities, I found an ad that simply said, “Go to YOUTUBE & type in BULLYFREESONG (no spaces)”. I clicked the said ad, under the impression that I would find a link to the mentioned video… but sure enough, there wasn’t one. Why would anyone post an ad like this when they could just post the link?!

It was then and there that I realized there are probably some other crazy things among the virtual classifieds, and fortunately, I found the Best Of section of the site. While there, I found some very strange items on there, so I thought I would share them with you!

Spokane: Bigfoot

When I first saw this ad, it mentioned something about an imaginary friend. Naturally, I figured that’s all it would be – a goofy ad about an imaginary friend seeking real friends. Not exactly… What I did find was an entire ad about Bigfoot looking for love, and it’s definitely worth checking out. (Responding is optional.)

Baltimore: Body Dumping Site

With all the humorous stuff concerning Siri and body disposal, I thought I’d put this one on the list. Someone in Baltimore offered up their backyard for a good body dumping site. Why? Apparently, it’s legal to dump a body in Baltimore, and furthermore, civilians don’t have to report a dead body. Don’t take my word on this, for I’m just reiterating the ad.

Asheville: 1970s Avocado Green Toilet

Oh, the seventies – a time in which home decor was bad and earth tones ruled the day. This porcelain wonder is advertised as a place where you can sit “while leafing through a Reader’s Digest, smoking a cigarette, watching Chico and the Man”. Sounds like a party, indeed.

Washington, D.C.: Actor Needed

I don’t know why I clicked the simple ad request for an actor, but I did. Basically, someone needed an actor to “lose” the family dog so the kids wouldn’t be too hurt. The premise of this was both cruel and genius. I loved it. Also, the fact that it was a $500 gig wasn’t too bad, either.

Minneapolis: MacBook Wanted

Before I got my MacBook, I was willing to do whatever I could to get one. This college kid obviously wanted one really bad for school. However, instead of offering up cash, he opts for the barter system, offering items such as his Robin Hood: Men in Tights DVD and a can of vegetables (your choice!).

Raleigh: Ghost Wanted

This is actually the most recent BOC I found, but it’s different, fresh, and unique. To put things short and sweet, it would appear that a documentary filmmaker is looking to contact a ghost. Ah, but not just any ghost – a ghost who is using the Internet. Brilliant, really.

Orlando: Human Soul

Much like how I was forced to sign away my soul when I began writing for MakeUseOf (I should really start reading contracts more thoroughly – kidding, I love MUO), a fellow right on Craigslist tried to sell his soul on a “Black Friday special”. His purpose of doing this was to simply earn money for Christmas shopping. However, he was also open to bartering. Perhaps the MacBook kid could haven taken a note?

London: Henchmen Needed

Based on the details of this ad, Jacques “The Zapper” Zerapi was in need of a few good henchmen to get his super-villain lifestyle started. With desired traits such as a “flexible moral code” and “being a corrupt government official”, I’m sure there were plenty of applicants available.

New York: Potato Cannon

This… I don’t know what to say about this. Apparently, the fellow was wanting to get rid of his 8-feet long potato cannon because “the neighbors figured out what was happening”. I’d like to know the story behind this, so if any of you want to email him and ask, leave your findings in the comments.

Conclusion

I really don’t know if all of these ads are real (some are obviously fake), but I almost wish all of them were. The world could use a few more interesting things, don’t you think? Perhaps Craigslist is where we could start! For more Strange Craigslist, check out the Best of Craigslist.

What other strange ads have you found on Craigslist? Do you know of any other places with odd items such as these?

Unemployment is an issue in much of the world today. There are many people looking for work, but not enough companies hiring. As a result, job hunters are trying to find ways to find and apply to as many jobs as possible.

Craigslist is an obvious solution, and one I’m familiar with, as I’ve worked with several businesses that I found through Craigslist’s Jobs section. However, I also found myself wasting time on supposed opportunities that turned out to be scams. Learn from my experience and you’ll save yourself time and heartache.

Don’t Pay To Play

Okay, okay. This one might seem a little obvious, but I feel like it is worth saying for those who are just starting in the world of Craigslist job hunting.

Never, ever pay for job opportunities.

Often, these are scams, but they’re not always so blatant. Creative types, such as writers, graphical artists and even programmers, will often come across advertisements for job boards focused on a specific area of expertise. Joining is usually free, but you’re not allowed to apply to jobs without paying – or if you’re allowed to apply, your application is given some disadvantage that virtually guarantees you won’t be selected.

Technically, sites like this aren’t always scams because some people do in fact find jobs through them. Even if you do find an opportunity, however, it will often be of poor quality. The employers who use these boards are often aware that someone desperate enough to pay money to find jobs will also be willing to work on the cheap.

Avoid Suspicious Sales Jobs

Another folly that often trips up Craiglist job searches are the mysterious sales jobs. These are companies that compensate their employees primarily by a sales commission, and often promise outrageous income for little work. Such a job might not be bad if reasonable base pay was available, or if employees weren’t often expected to spend significant amounts of their own time and money in the search for a big sale.

Ironically, these jobs often catch searchers off guard with promises of high base pay. Usually this is qualified by a phrase such as “per appointment” or “expected” because employees are paid not by the hour but for individual sales appointments and leads, plus whatever commission comes from them.

Also look out for group job interviews or promises of preliminary training sessions made by overly enthusiastic employers. Often these so-called interviews turn in to sales pitches, where employers eagerly convince a captive audience to ignore the terrible base pay and lack of benefits in the hopes of earning big commissions.

Apply Now! Seriously

The Internet is all about the now. News, now! Entertainment, now! And of course, jobs – right now!

If you’re going to be successful on Craigslist, you need to approach it with the ability to act immediately. Often, an employer who posts a general advertisement will receive a few hundred resumes within a day. The chances that you’ll be picked aren’t great if you’re not one of the first twenty or thirty applicants. Job hunters applying to positions that require special skills will have a little more time, but it never hurts to be quick.

How can you make sure that you’re one of the first to apply? Use Craigslist’s RSS feeds! Many people forget that this function is available, and I don’t blame them, because the site tucks its RSS feed button down in the bottom right hand corner of its pages. If you want to be lightning-quick, subscribe to your local Craiglist Jobs RSS feed both on your computer and on your mobile device.

Tapping Out Templates

Using templates is controversial among job hunters, but I fall on the side of using them. Today’s high-volume online job search forces hunters to be brief, giving them time to apply for as many jobs as possible.

What I don’t recommend however, is that hunters use pre-packaged templates. Instead, create your own! This can easily be done using Microsoft Word. My suggestion is to create templates for each specific type of job you might apply for, such as customer service, office management, etc. Make sure the template has sections where the name of the specific company you are applying to, if known, can be inserted.

You can even save a copy of the template to your email or on your mobile device so that it can be altered with a document editing app. This will make it possible for you to apply while out and about, ensuring that your application arrives first!

Use Alternative Craigslist Search Engines

Perhaps the biggest limitation you’ll encounter when using Craigslist to search for jobs is Craigslist itself. The grouping of jobs and locations that you are sorting through may not be the best for your specific job hunt.

Fortunately, there are other Craigslist search engines that can help you. We’ve already covered these in a separate article, so go check them out! They could save you a lot of time.

Conclusion

Job hunting is no one’s idea of fun, but these tips will hopefully keep your time unemployed as short as possible. If you have any of your own advice, let us know in the comments!

The search engines keep on coming, and it seems like there will be even more new ways to browse your favorite HTML-stubborn site, and a lot of these aid you in carrying your searches nationwide.

Back in May, MakeUseOf posted an article entitled 4 Great Craigslist Search Engines To Make Your Searches On The Site Easier. However, the fun doesn’t end there, my barter-browsing friends.
Fortunately, the search engines keep on coming, and it seems like there will be even more new ways to browse your favorite HTML-stubborn site, and a lot of these aid you in carrying your searches nationwide.

Check out these four more ways to make your Craigslist browsing just a little easier by letting you search all of craigslist at once.

Allofcraigs

Allofcraigs has a posh landing page that offers a textbook execution of a GIF, but the question is this – does it actually work? Well, I’m happy to tell you that besides it being just a pretty face, the site does exactly what it is supposed to do. Just punch in what you are searching for, and sure enough, Allofcraigs will search all of Craigslist and then present to you your search results from all over the country (or in a specific region).

Besides scouring Craigslist, Allofcraigs will actually run searches in Craig’s competitors, such as Kijiji and Backpage. Furthermore, the site offers a Firefox add-on and a Chrome extension among a few other items.

AllofCraigslist.org

AllofCraigslist.org has quite the similar title to the first site that I mentioned in this post, and as you might guess, it does basically the same thing. I guess the only question that you need to ask yourself is whether or not you want to give someone ad revenue. Using Google Custom Search, AllofCraigslist.org allows users to search nationwide for items of interest.

Granted, it functions a little like a watered-down version of Allofcraigs, but it does allow users to search in the traditional classes (“for sale”, ”community”, “gigs”, etc.)

Dailylister

Dailylister is a lot like the sites shown here, but it lets you search in the formal categories that Craigslist has to offer. For instance, I could search for a Chevy Camaro in the category of “cars+trucks – by owner”, but it still searches for items nationwide. The site uses Google Custom Search (much like the others).

It does have quite a few ads clogging up the white space of your search results. However, they have to pay for the site somehow, right?

Craiggers

We’ve discussed Craiggers before on MakeUseOf, but perhaps the site should be given a second look. Out of all the sites shown here, I believe that Craiggers is the prettiest to look at. Even while browsing, the user interface is clean-cut and incredibly easy to use, and although I am someone that believes in function over form, I’ll admit that this site’s appearance was what made me want to use it.

Beyond appearances, Craiggers does exactly what you would expect it to, and it does it with style. The site claims to be better than Craigslist, and I’m beginning to think that this might be true.

Conclusion

These sites simply make Craigslist-browsing a little less frustrating, and if you’re up for seeing the site in a different light, you should try them out. Granted, you may be like Craigslist (who has kept the same style design since 2001) and appreciate the same old thing that you know and love. There’s nothing wrong with that, and you shouldn’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

What other sites have you used to search all of Craigslist? Have you ever used the ones shown here?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/helperlogo.png">It’s pretty clear to most people that use it, that Craiglist is one of the largest, if not the largest database of items and services for sale. Craigslist spans the entire world, and serves communities from the largest cities to the smallest towns. You’ll find pets, vehicles, tools, appliances, computers and just about anything else that you can dream up. The only thing that Craigslist lacks in a very big way is a front-end that makes any sense at all.

Craigslist looks about the same today as when I personally first learned about it years ago. Craigslist owner Craig Newmark is famous for his well-known anti-commercialism stance. You will not find ads on Craigslist. Nor will you see Craig selling out to any large commercial interests – he has stated that he has no plans to sell his site, even though it is easily the most well known and well-established sell-and-trade website on the Internet.

Here at MUO, we’ve tried to offer a number of different ways to improve how you interface with that enormous database. David offered five awesome tools to make Craigslist more useful, and not long ago I covered the Craigzilla Firefox plugin that helps make it more efficient to search through items for sale. Recently though, I believe I’ve discovered the most useful Craigslist browser plugin out there, called Craigslist Helper. Craigslist Helper isn’t so much an alternative method to access Craigslist, it’s actually a way to enhance your experience whenever you do visit the Craigslist website.

Setting Up Craigslist Helper

You can install Craigslist Helper for Firefox, Chrome or Safari. When you do install the add-on, the first thing you’ll want to do is go into the options menu and set up how you’d like the plug-in to behave when you visit Craigslist. The first tab configures the behavior of the plug-in.

Most of the options determine how the browser add-on will display the different Craigslist ads to you. You can configure it to highlight new ads that you haven’t seen, show image thumbnails in the listing display, how much ad text to show, and more. The next tab is concerned primarily with how each ad will appear in the listing. Here, you’ll define the width of the ad display, the size of the preview pop-up, and coloring options.

Finally, you can configure the thumbnail and preview image sizes to appear in boxes that are the right size for the method you usually use to access Craigslist. If you like to keep your browser window smaller than usual, just scale down the thumbnail and image sizes however you like.

Once you’re done setting up the add-on options, you’re ready to visit Craigslist and see how much the add-on enhances the experience.

Craigslist Helper Gives Craigslist A Shot Of Adrenaline

The first time I visited Craigslist with Craigslist Helper installed, I was sold. It doesn’t just make it easier to search through Craigslist, it actually makes browsing through the site a much more enjoyable experience. Each item listing provides both preview text and preview images for the item. All of these things, like the amount of preview text and the size of the thumbnails, are defined by the settings that you previously defined in the options.

For each item, you can add your own personal notes to help you keep track of the items that you like, actions you’ve taken to buy it, or anything else you want to note about that item.

When you click to expand the search form, you’ll see an advanced search area open up that actually lets you search for items across any area of Craigslist, not only the one that you’re currently searching through. This means you can hunt for items in different states, throughout all of Craigslist, or even limited to a certain distance from your local location. This advanced search feature alone makes this add-on total gold-dust – as Craigslist is infuriatingly isolated into sections defined by geographic area.

So, this add-on finally integrates different areas of Craigslist together into a more cohesive online application of sorts.

Another very cool feature is the alert option. If there is a certain type of item – like a particular gadget or an antique item that you want to watch for on Craigslist, just check the “Alert” box and define how often you would like it to conduct that search on Craigslist and alert you of any new listings that appear.

Individual listings are also enhanced by this add-on. And the beauty of it is that you can see all of the listing information without ever actually visiting the item page itself. For example, just hover the mouse over the link in the search results page, and the entire listing will appear in a pop-up box at whatever size you defined in the options.

The same is true of the preview images. If you want a closer look without actually visiting the item page, just hover your mouse over the preview image and a full-size image will appear in a pop-up window.

As you can see, Craigslist Helper really changes not only your ability to search through listings a lot more easily, but it completely changes the Craiglist website itself, once you get into digging for the items that you want. The ability to schedule searches and get alerts make it one of the most useful tools to access Facebook with any of the three browsers that are supported.

So, give Craigslist Helper a try and see if it helps you find those hidden gems more easily. What do you like about the add-on? Are there things that could use improvement? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/craigslistsearchthumb.png">One of the defining characteristics of Craigslist is simplicity. In a web 2.0 era, Craigslist has refused to make major alterations to its site. It started as a list of stuff made possible by a dude named Craig, and that’s what it more or less remains as.

This has advantages, but one disadvantage is the lack of a great search function. It can be hard to find specific items on Craigslist, particularly if you’d like to search multiple locations at once. Let’s take a look at some Craigslist search engines that solve that problem.

Search Tempest

Search Tempest separates itself from most Craigslist search engines right off the bat by providing an interface that actually looks professional instead of like something a teenager might have coded ten years ago.

Once you start using it, Search Tempest proves to be slick and handy. The front page interface lets you type in what you’re looking for, where you’re looking for it, and also define the specific Craigslist category you want to look in (if any). The search results are then provided per-city listed on Craigslist within your search radius.

I suspect that this search engine might run slow on older computers, because it seems to have a lot going on in the background. Otherwise, it’s an excellent search engine.

Crazedlist

The idea behind Crazedlist is that some Craigslist search engine results might be blocked because of information already stored in your browser. When you visit Crazedlist, the site actually provides instructions that will help you achieve the best search results. It’s very handy if you’ve been having issues with other search engines.

Crazedlist also features a prominent Worldwide Search feature that works essentially the same as the United States search, but of course lets you search in countries across the globe. This site could probably use some interface improvements – it makes excessive use of checkboxes – but it’s still one of the better options available.

Search All Craig’s

As Craigslist itself proves, sometimes the most basic option is the best option. Search All Craig’s takes advantage of this theme by presenting little more than a plain white page with a search field attached. Put whatever you want in it, and search all of Craigslist!

OK, so there is just a little more to it than that. Once you search you can narrow down your results further by region. But really, that’s all the features there are to be found. While this may make specific searches more difficult, the benefit is a site that returns results almost instantly.

CraigZoom

Another fairly basic site, CraigZoom is quick and has a “search all Craigslist” function, but also offers more options that Search All Craig’s.

These options are off to the left and they include things such as location (by state) category and price (when applicable). You can choose to search only titles and only posts with images, as well.

Basically, this is just a redesign of the Craigslist site that makes it possible to embark on a new search in an entirely different location without hitting your browser’s back button.

Conclusion

I tried to cover all of my bases here, but I didn’t cover Craigslist search applications. These are not search engines you open in your browser but instead programs you download. An example discussed here on MakeUseOf is CraigsList Reader. Although downloading an application to search a website might seem a bit odd, you should give it a shot, because it’s quite effective.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla21.png">I have to admit that I really love Craigslist. I’m not sure I could ever explain why such a poorly designed, massive and hulking mess of a classified ad system would become so immensely popular around the world, but there’s no getting around the fact that it is. When you want to find something to buy or sell, need a service like a carpenter or a nanny, or you just want to find out where the local yard sales are, Craigslist is the place that can help better than even most local community event or bulletin boards.

Here at MUO, we’ve covered a lot of different search tools and methods to dig through Craigslist. I first touched on searching Craigslist with a desktop app called Craigslist Reader. Unfortunately the app didn’t stay entirely free for long. Then there are the various search engines like CrazedList, and lots of other tools that let you plug into the massive ad board, like the 5 tools David covered a while back.

Monitor Craigslist With A Firefox Add-On

While a dedicated desktop Craigslist client is something that I like to use when I’m trying to do a deep query of Craigslist, I also don’t want to keep extra software running all the time for scheduled searches to monitor Craigslist changes. I also like using Craiglist search engines, but again, they don’t always have the same features as an application, and most can’t do the scheduled searches that give you a competitive advantage with things like buying rare collectibles or spotting job opportunities.

So I was pleased to discover CraigZilla, a Craigslist search tool that runs embedded right inside Firefox. You don’t have to run any additional hardware and you don’t have to visit any website. Craigzilla will run in your Firefox browser and alert you any time there are new Craiglist listings that match your search criteria.

When you first install the CraigZilla plugin, the first thing you’ll want to do is go into the options (in the Firefox add-on list) and set up how often you want the tool to check Craigslist for new listings that meet your search criteria, as well as the search location (yes, unfortunately you can only choose one).

You’ll also notice in the preferences window that there are tabs for the various feed categories. You can select any categories that you want CraigZilla to monitor and alert you whenever there are any new additions. I wouldn’t suggest selecting “All” unless you want constant notification. However, if there are some categories that you’re always on the lookout for, this is a really effective way to stay on top of the latest listings.

The Job Feeds are also a powerful tool for any job hunter because you’ll be alerted instantly whenever a new ad is placed within your field or industry. For service providers, like freelancers or contractors, this is probably one of the easiest ways to identify new leads and opportunities just about every day.

If you’re house hunting or apartment hunting, there’s also a Housing Feed where you can monitor new ads published to the category of real estate you’re interested in. As any house or apartment hunter knows, being the first to make that phone call can sometimes mean the difference between getting a place or having it slip through your fingers.

If you’re a head hunter or someone that constantly needs new hired help, the Services Feeds section is a good place to start. Constantly need laborers? Select the Labor/Move category. Always in search of writers? Select the Write/Ed/Trans category. You’ll get alerted any time someone new places an ad that they are available for work.

When you’re done configuring your feeds, you’ll see the CraigZilla icon appear in the lower right corner of the screen. This is where you’ll be able to quickly access all of the new Craigslist listings, and it’s also where notifications will pop-up.

If you don’t add any filters, you can view all of the latest Craigslist ads in a category by right clicking the CraigZilla icon and then left-clicking on the category that you want to see. Only the categories you selected in the Preferences will show up.

In the online reviews for CraigZilla, I read that one person had difficulty getting the filters to work, so I decided to test it out myself. You can add filters in the Preferences by typing in words in the Filter fields for that category.

Now, whenever listings with your filter show up, you’ll get a notification, and you can hover your mouse over the icon to get a quick view of those new listings that match your filter. As far as I can tell, it works like a charm!

When you click into the category to view the newest listings, you’ll see the ads that match your filter highlighted with an underline.

CraigZilla is one of those add-ons that I’m confident I’m going to keep using for as long as it’s available. I’m far too busy to be bothered to go back to Craigslist all the time to search for new opportunities, and I have way too many applications already running on my PC to launch yet another one. CraigZilla solves that dilemma by running in the background on your browser and alerting you whenever anything of interest shows up in the listings.

If you’re an avid Craigslist user, give the Firefox CraigZilla plugin a try and let us know what you think. Did it do everything you wanted? Were any useful features missing? Share your insight in the comments section below.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Craigslist08.png">The original Craigslist was created in 1995 by Craig Newmark as an email list for his friends in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1996 it became a web-based service and today it is one of the most popular free online classifieds service worldwide, although it is nowhere as popular as in North America.

Craigslist has it all. Whether you are looking for friends, a job, an apartment, a hair stylist, or a ride, you will find a matching category. While you can find almost anything on Craigslist, some items are more likely to be found than others. Let’s have a look at some popular items most commonly sold on Craigslist.

Cars

For this category I went straight to Craigslist in the Detroit Metro area but I found many more ads for used cars and trucks (sold from the owner) than for simple auto parts. Obviously, people are dying to get rid of their old cars to – hopefully – get something smaller and less expensive.

Furniture

Craigslist is the best place to get a great deal on high quality furniture, provided you don’t mind that it has been used.

Real Estate

In many cities, searching a room or apartment to rent via Craigslist is a standard procedure, just as browsing classified ads in newspapers was in the ‘old days’. If you’re in the market to buy, however, would you consider Craigslist?

Judging by the amount of ads posted by realtors, you should! The market is hot for those who can afford to invest, while sellers don’t want to lose even more money on advertisements. Hence, the best offers are more likely to be found on sites like Craigslist.

In this context, I should also recommend the following article: The 5 Most Significant Online Property Search Websites – Part 2

Computers & Tech

Where would you expect to find used computers and accessories if not on Craigslist? Indeed, if your keyboard or laptop suddenly died on you, an affordable replacement is certainly waiting for you in the respective category. Or maybe you need some additional toys?

Baby & Kid Stuff

For families on a tight budget, Craigslist can be a real life safer. Not only can families save a lot of money by making deals on otherwise horribly expensive items (strollers or baby furniture), they may also be able to afford less essential items.

Once junior has grown out of his fancy clothes, no longer needs baby furniture, or is tired of his toys, the items can easily be re-distributed via Craigslist, rather than catching dust in the attic.

Cell Phones

Mobile phones are hot items on Craigslist and if you don’t mind sporting last year’s model, you can get incredible deals. Or fall for a scam if the seller isn’t as honest as the one in the example below. So watch out!

Tickets

This is one of the cheaper items and in a city like New York with a lively entertainment culture, there are hundreds of tickets for sale on Craigslist every day. Unfortunately, a lot of these ads forward you to other ticket selling websites and thus this is not really the most popular item on Craigslist.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/craigslistthumb.jpg">Craigslist is one of the web’s oldest established websites. It’s been around since 1995, and while its services have changed over the years, it’s always been an open, (usually) free to use classifieds website. Unsurprisingly, this makes it a great place to buy and sell stuff, and I’m sure many of MakeUseOf’s readers have bought or sold something on the site at some point.

Still, Craigslist is considered by some to be a bit shady, and perhaps with good reason. There are few rules, and the items people advertise rarely come with any guarantee. Buying some items on Craigslist can be a bit risky, but there are some relatively safe deals to be found on the site.

Video Games

Used games are always a great deal because they don’t lose any value as they’re used. With the exception of nicks or scratches to the game disc, which you can inspect for before handing over your cash, a game that is ten years old is in the same condition as it was the day it was released. Indeed, it may be better if there have been patches released for the game.

Not everyone on Craigslist offers fair prices for games, but you can usually find deals that are better than what you’ll receive from your local Gamestop and about on par with what you’d find in the used section of online retailers like Amazon. You don’t have to pay shipping costs, however, nor do you have to wait for the game to arrive, so you usually end up ahead.

Old Computers

Buying new second-hand computers on Craigslist is a bit risky for my blood. The price tag associated with them is always high, and if you have a problem you may not be able to return the item to the store but rather go through the manufacturer’s warranty process, which can take some time.

Older PCs, however, are often sold on Craigslist. It’s not hard to find a two or three year old PC with a dual-core processor and two to four gigabytes of RAM for $200 or less. If you’re willing – or want to – go for even older hardware, it’s not hard to pick up a full system for under $100. While you can find comparably priced systems elsewhere, Craigslist tends to be advantageous because of shipping costs, particularly if you want to buy a desktop. It’s also reassuring to be able to actually see the system and at least confirm that it boots before buying it.

Audio Equipment

There is a lot of home theater equipment available on Craigslist, but I hesitate recommending the purchase of items liked used HDTVs because they can have hidden problems. A HDTV with aging capacitors, for example, may start to show the signs in subtle ways, like a slow power-on cycle or slight graphics errors. Six months later, the HDTV is dead.

Audio equipment, however, is usually straightforward. Speakers have few complex electronics and are generally quite durable. If there is a problem with a speaker, subwoofer or other piece of audio equipment, you can usually detect it by listening to the playback of the equipment for a few minutes.

Digital Cameras

Digital cameras are a great item to buy used on Craiglist, particularly if you’re looking for a Digital SLR or similar high-end camera equipment. They have two things going for them as a used item. The first is durability; cameras are built to be used frequently and need to be tough enough to jostle about in a camera bag regularly without damage. The second is passion; high-end cameras are expensive, and generally only usable by people with enough passion to learn some basics about photography. There’s a decent chance that the previous owner of the camera had some love for it, and since you’re going to meet that owner you should be able sniff out how well the camera was taken care of.

In addition to the cameras themselves, Craigslist is a great place to find accessories for the same reasons above. A well treated camera lens can literally last decades, so buying one second-hand from someone who squeaked a few years use out of it shouldn’t decrease the quality of the lens one bit.

Jailbroken Smartphones

Normally, I would’t recommend buying smartphones from Craigslist. Smartphones are another category of item that can easily have hidden problems, and they’re almost completely impossible for most geeks to work on, so even a tiny issue can turn into costly repairs. In addition, smartphones are sold used with their original battery, which is probably going to be in need of replacement in the near future. Finally, new smartphones are being released at an incredible rate, so buying a used smartphone will really put you behind the curve.

Jailbroken smartphones are different, however. They’re not immune to any of the above complaints, but jailbreaking voids your warranty anyway, so potential problems with the phone aren’t as big of an issue. In addition, jailbreaking is a task that not everyone will be comfortable doing, so in a sense you’re gaining a service when you buy a jailbroken phone. You don’t have to go through the hassle of doing it yourself.

Conclusion

Obviously, there are lots of things for sale on Craigslist. You can never be 100% certain that a used item is going to be everything as promised, but that’s simply the risk you take when buying used – and the reason why used items are less expensive. Have you bought something on Craigslist that was great, or were you burned? Share your thoughts in the comments.

All you have to do is sign up for their amazing program, or buy their astonishing sales kit, and you too can be earning many thousands of dollars each month. In my quest to write, sell and make money selling eBooks, I’ve waded through mountains of these scams, and I’m here to tell you that it is possible to make money from selling eBooks, but that success does not come overnight and not without a lot of hard work. In this article I’d like to offer a guide (a free one…imagine that!) that you can use to sell your eBooks.

The first step is obviously writing an eBook. Don’t concern yourself too much with copyright. Thanks to the Digital Millenium Act of 1998, anything you generate and publish online is already legally copyrighted under your author name. However, it is true that enforcing that copyright could be somewhat difficult unless you do hold proof of copyright, so if you’re very concerned about someone stealing your work, then submit the claim electronically and pay the fee.

If it sets your mind at ease, it’s well worth the cost. If you’re wondering what format you should write your eBook in, here at MakeUseOf, authors provided a number of excellent tools that can help you generate that first eBook. Saikat wrote about the PHP script converter at EbookHood to convert your eBook into iPod readable format. You’ve also probably read about the cool MyEbook eBook publishing platform, or my favorite one, Zinepal, which creates your PDF eBook in a format that most common readers can display. Another very good option is converting your Word document to PDF format, as Aibek described in his article on doPDF. Once you have your eBook in a format that you can sell, you’re ready to move on into marketing and selling your eBook.

Make Money Selling eBooks Online Just Like Any Other Product

I’ve mentioned some of my own eBay history in my past articles on the auction site, and while my personal experiences as an eBay PowerSeller were not very easy, I do know that any product which you have an unlimited supply of and a high demand for do very well there.

With that said, the eBooks that aren’t very in demand really don’t do well at all. The key, when you choose what topics to write about, is to choose eBook topics in the same way you would choose an online article topic – based on the demand for that topic and the availability of it throughout the net. The smartest thing to do when you go with eBay is to set up a seller store and post your eBooks in a permanent listing for a regular fee. Another fantastic marketplace for eBooks is Craigslist.

This surprises many people, but the truth is that Craigslist has become a very large marketplace with a huge audience. Just like on eBay, if you’re writing on a topic that’s in demand, you’ll get interested buyers.

Reaching the eBook Audience

The very best way to achieve the highest sales for your eBook is to take advantage of those eBook directories that accept submissions from authors. While most major eBook sellers like Amazon or Barnes & Nobles only accept submissions from major book publishers, many of the smaller online firms will accept direct submissions from writers. Jack recently wrote a great article on how to publish your eBook in print using LuLu’s awesome publication service, but LuLu also offers eBook authors a fantastic resource to sell your book in electronic format as well.

Now, selling an eBook on LuLu is not free. The right to publish comes at a price tag that’s currently about $1.49. For me, that’s about the price of a cup of coffee, and considering the fact that LuLu takes care of integrating DRM copy protection and already has a huge audience for your book – it’s well worth it. If your book sells, LuLu takes only a $2.50 cut while you get $10 in revenue. I’m very impressed with LuLu’s rates and service and would recommend them to any potential author. However, if you really only want to use a service that’s absolutely free, there is another excellent option known as TradeBit.

At TradeBit, you can upload your eBooks where the TradeBit community can find it and buy it. For hosting and selling your eBook for you, TradeBit charges absolutely nothing upfront, and when it sells you get 75% of the revenue. Again, this is a very fair deal considering that TradeBit absorbs the costs for hosting, promoting and selling your eBook on their site and with their existing traffic.

Host Your Own eBooks and Take 100% of the Profit

There is, of course, always the self-hosting option. In this case, you would set up a blog or a website and provide your own eBooks for download through a payment system like Paypal and just offer your books in a simple format just like you would sell Amazon books on your own blog.

The advantage to selling your own eBooks on your blog or website is that you set your own price and collect 100% of the profits. The disadvantage is that you’re starting at ground zero in attracting an audience and potential buyers. Over time, you’ll have a good traffic, a strong reputation, and a steady revenue stream – but getting there will take a bit longer if you opt for the self-hosting approach. The best option might be to start with one of the eBook sales sites in order to get people hooked on the eBooks that you write, and then switch to the self-hosted option once people recognize your name as a premium eBook author.
