One advantage of the Internet is that you can build relationships with a wide range of people from various demographics that you may never physically meet. Social network sites like Twitter and Facebook are worldwide Internet forums in which we can get news and information in a short amount of time.

Now another community-based site called Favo.rs has come out of Beta release with the specific purpose of getting professionals to “build and strengthen relationships by exchanging valuable help with one another”. In short, Favo.rs is all about asking and granting favors.

How It Works

Favo.rs works similarly to Twitter and Facebook in that after you join the site you build a list of contacts by following existing members, and by inviting your friends and contacts on other professional social networking sites like LinkedIn.

The Favo.rs homepage is set up for you to ask a question or favor you want, or respond to a favor or request. Your request can be a general one, or more targeted towards getting feedback on say your new business website; asking your followers to promote a particular product or service, or request introductions to other people who may be of help to you.

Favo.rs is like attending a professional networking gathering in which you exchange information and ideas, get connected with other important people, and ask for advice and help with your business or job pursuits.

Sample favors listed on Favo.rs so far include members asking other members to “like” them on Facebook, request for feedback on a re-designed website, a request for followers on Twitter, and recommendations for talented iOS developers.

Favors Feed

The hubbub of your Favo.rs homepage consists of the Favors Feed that lists the most popular requests and favors by members of the site. Another tab contains the activities of the people you are following, followed by a section devoted to the Top Members of the site who are the most active. All your favorite requests get listed in a separate tab as well.

You can also search requests by people, tags, and specific favors. It would be useful however if the Favors Feed could be filtered by topics, categories or tags. As membership for the site grows, the Feed will undoubtedly get very long and difficult to manage. Being able to filter favor requests beyond conducting searches might be helpful.

Building A Reputation

As you respond to requests and favors of other members on the site, you begin to build a reputation, and go from being labeled a Rookie (“help others less than 10 times”), to Participant, Advocate (a high level of helping others), and Benefactor (the top 5% of helpers.) You earn points and thank you badges that get listed on your profile as you participate.

Generally, Favo.rs asks that you grant as many favors as you ask, which will increase your status and credibility on the site.

Favo.rs is set up for you to broadcast favorite requests directly to your social networks without having to leave the site. You even get to forward requests to specific friends on your social network.

Activity Dashboard

If you find yourself becoming very active on Favo.rs, you can use the Activity Dashboard to get an overview of the top 5 most helpful numbers, the top 5 people you have helped, and the top 5 people who helped you in the last 30 days.

If you link Favo.rs to your LinkedIn profile and other social networking sites, you will be able to directly invite members to join Favo.rs.

How useful a site like Favo.rs becomes depends upon a vibrant active membership. Let us and the developers of Favo.rs know what you think of the site. Do you think it could be more useful than existing and similar social networking sites?

For many of us savvy computer users, Evernote is among the top 10 essential apps for our computer and mobile devices. Even as a free app, Evernote provides a lot of online storage and app space to stuff notes, web clippings, screenshots, small PDFs, etc.

Though Evernote is just a file cabinet for collecting all sorts of stuff, its attractive design and simple user interface make it stand out above the rest.

And it is also its design appeal that makes Evernote’s two recently released iPhone and iPod touch apps, Hello and Food, worthy of a download.

Evernote Hello

On a few occasions I’ve taken out my iPhone and recorded the contact information of people I’ve met. It’s no big deal, for it’s part of what you do with a smartphone. I’ve also handed my phone to others and asked them to type in their contact information for me. Again, no big deal, but that’s exactly what Evernote Hello app does. It’s a simple way to collect someone’s contact information, except the user interface looks more like a greeting card than the techie text fields of an address book.

Let’s say you’re at network business meeting, event, or party and you meet someone who you want to keep in touch with it. You launch Hello on your iPhone, tap the + button, and then hand that person your phone. Your recipient enters his or her contact information and then snaps a photo of him or herself using the iOS self-facing camera.

The user interface for Hello consists of your photo and a personal small greeting that I would imagine — for I haven’t tried it on anyone yet — would make the recipient feel more comfortable about entering information into your phone.

If the recipient includes an email address, your contact information along with your snapped photo gets automatically emailed to your recipient. This email feature alleviates the problem of your contact not having an iPhone with the app installed on it to exchange information. (Remember the old Bump app that required you to “bump” another person’s iPhone to exchange information? Yeah, right…how many people did you ever get around to bumping with?)

Now of course if you meet someone who would give you a dazed look when handing them your iPhone, you could simply enter the information yourself and snap their photo, making sure you switch the lens direction of the camera.

Personally I can’t wait to use this app, for I can’t count how many times I’ve lost someone’s business card or didn’t have pen and paper to write down their contact information. I use my iPhone as my wallet now, so an app like this is perfect for storing contact information. The contact information you receive is also synced to your Evernote account for instant backup, but unfortunately it doesn’t get copied to your Address Book.

Of course with the first version of an app like this, there are many things you wish it could or would not do. First off, the camera snaps four photos, all of which are retained in the app. (Thankfully they are not copied to your device’s Camera Roll.) However, the camera starts snapping photos when the person raises the iPhone to his face. This may feel a little awkward for some users, which will probably mean retaking the photo several times to get it “right.”

It would be better if the recipient could just select one photo from the four that are snapped, though that would take away from the mini slideshow effect for each of your contacts on the homepage.

It’s also great that your contact information is sent to the recipient, but it would be even better if you could somehow select from a few previously setup profiles, say one for business and one for social contacts.

And many users will wonder why they can’t add their Facebook info, like they can their Twitter address.

Evernote Food

Evernote Food is another simple information gathering app that is quite frankly similar to how you probably already use Evernote or another note application that can also capture images.

Evernote Food has a clean easy-to-use interface, in which you simply launch the app, tap the + button, and snap a photo of a memorable meal that you have eaten at home or at a restaurant.

I have already started such an image collection in the aNote app I use on my iPhone. But honestly, I will now start using Food because the layout is more attractive.

Food will also record, using GPS integration, the location in which you take a photo, as well as allowing you to tag your images and write your own captions and additional notes.

You can share your captured content via e-mail, Twitter or your Facebook account.

The photos you take in Food are also copied to your Camera Roll, and the content can be saved to a notebook in your Evernote account.

Food might be very useful for recording recipes, restaurant meals and menus, wines and special types of coffee that you want to remember. But this Evernote app doesn’t have a folder structure, nor can you search content by tags, which are used in your Evernote account and related apps.

Let us know what you think about Evernote Hello and Food. As free apps, requiring iOS 5.0 or later, they are so well designed that you will want to check them out for their sheer simplicity.

Do you have a central contacts list? It’s pretty difficult to nowadays. In my case, it’s a near impossibility. I’ve simply changed services too many times, failing to copy all of my contacts over each time I move. With email alone, I’ve changed between Yahoo, Hotmail, Outlook, and Gmail over the last 5-6 years. Facebook’s probably where all of my most up-to-date contacts are, but it’s really just my friends and personal acquaintances there.

You know what we could all use? A consolidation tool. You know, something that will connect with all of my old services and pull all of my contacts into one complete list. In this article, I’m going to show you a web application that can help you do just that, because let’s face it, we’re never going to go through and do it manually.

What Is Neiio?

Neiio is a free service that lets you update, save, and export your contacts across different platforms. It allows you to import contacts from various profiles, including Facebook, Google, and LinkedIn, where you can organize them into groups. And once you got everything just the way you like it, you can export your contacts to apps like Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, or any program that supports the Microsoft Excel format.

Neiio can also convert contacts from your iPhone, Android, or Blackberry device, eliminating duplicates along the way. When contacts are imported, they are alphabetized and ready to be sorted.

The Process

To get started using Neiio, head over to the homepage and click on the ‘Need an account? Subscribe!’ link located under the Login button. Then just provide your name along with your desired username and password and you’re all set. You’ll need to confirm your email address before continuing.

After you confirm your email address, you can begin importing your contacts from all the other services you’ve been using prior to discovering Neiio. Facebook, LinkedIn, Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, and Outlook are featured on the app. Clicking on one of them will give you the option to connect to your account and import your contact list.

Neiio will import contacts from all of those services and then list them in alphabetical order. To create groups, click on Organize (step 2) at the top of the screen. Neiio will create smart groups based on how you currently have them grouped, like if you’ve listed people as ‘Family’ on your Facebook page.

To export contacts, click Export and choose which service you want to export contacts to. You can then choose which information will be exported (names, numbers, emails, etc.). If you’ve imported and grouped contacts from several accounts, you can also choose which groups you want to export. Just select your desired platform or file format and export. Both the Excel and vCard format are supported.Select either a mobile platform, an email service or a file format to export the contacts to.

Conclusion

The idea behind Neiio is simple yet useful enough to be of interest to you and I. Networking is a big proponent of making professional connections and being social on the web, and it’s a good idea to be able to get to any one of your contacts’ information if you need to. What do you think of Neiio?

I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve been out at a bar or at some event where I’ve been introduced to a lot of people and failed to bring any business cards to hand out. The problem used to be actually about owning business cards in the first place, but now it seems I never have them with me when I need them.

There are a lot of web-based business card apps out there, sure, but I can’t seem to stick with any of them; and a lot of the phone apps require that the other user have the same app as me, which is rarely the case. Also, a problem with business cards in general is that the information on them becomes outdated over time. Can’t we fix all of this, please?

In this article, I’m going to show you my new favorite business card app.

What is CardFlick?

CardFlick is a mobile app that lets you create and share digital business cards. It lets you email or “flick” your card to anyone.

Whether you’ve forgotten your business card at home or just want to go paper-free, CardFlick can be a lifesaver for you. You can choose your card from many great designs and send it to anyone, regardless of whether or not they have the app.

Your contacts and data are cloud synced, so you will never lose them and the information attached will always be up to date.

Using CardFlick

To begin the process of ditching your paper business cards, download the CardFlick app and run it on your phone.

When you first start the app you will be asked to sign in through Facebook. Once you’ve done this, your card will be ready. You can visit the Theme button to change the layout and theme of your card, as well as edit your information on the settings screen.

After you’ve got your fancy new business card just the way you like it, you can share it easily with others. For those that also have the CardFlick app on their phone, this process is as easy as visiting the Flick tab within the app.

On the Flick screen, you will see your completed card. To share, just swipe your card upward off the top of the screen. Those nearby will receive your card on their screen. Whenever someone receives a card with the app, they simply need to swipe it to the right to keep it in their collection, or to the left to–dare I say–delete it.

You can also share your CardFlick cards with those who don’t use the app, which takes care of all those Android users (Android app coming soon!) and less tech savvy people who are sans smartphone. In that case, just press the email button on the top of the Flick screen. Enter their email address and you’re done.

Once you’ve gathered some cards, you can view them in your contact list. Click on a user and you will see their card along with options for how to get hold of them. And, whenever you or another user updates their information, CardFlick will sync that updated info for everyone who has that card.

Conclusion

I love the fact that CardFlick is simple to use and allows me to store business card information without having to keep the actual business cards. The fact that it syncs updated info has to be the biggest selling point for me as I have yet to see another app implement that option. All in all, this is a very useful app.

What do you think of CardFlick?

Google announced a new feature yesterday for Google+ called circle sharing. You can now share whole circles with your friends, and thus introduce or suggest people to them easily. This is especially useful for professional circles. If you want, for example, to share all your professional contacts with your colleagues, you can now do it in two clicks. If building, maintaining and organizing your circles sometimes seems like a chore, this might be the feature that makes all that effort worthwhile.

Sharing a circle is easy. Simply go to your circles page, choose the circle you want to share and click on it. You will then get the option to share it.

Click “share” and a new window will open, allowing you to choose which circles you want to share with and add a comment.

There are several important things to note about circle sharing:

You can only share a circle as it is at that moment. Any changes you make will not be automatically shared. The name of the circle will also remain private.

You can only share circles with whole circles. If you have a new friend and you want to share your professional connections with him, you’d have to create a new circle just for him. You can’t choose separate people to share circles with.

Here is a short video demonstration of the new feature.

One of the most frequently used apps on many Android smartphones is the dialer, which is often only so-so. The dialer on my HTC Thunderbolt, for example, has always felt a slow and clunky, and doesn’t allow for customization.

As with any other function on an Android phone, these shortcomings can be addressed with third-party apps. Let’s have a look at three that improve the quality of the dialer and contacts experience free of charge.

Angel Dialer [2.0+]

If you’re looking for a simple and quick replacement for the default dialer and contacts app, Angel Dialer may be your best bet. There’s not quite as much to this Android calling app as some of the competition, but the basics are there. The dialer, contacts, groups and favorites are all available as part of one speedy interface. Most dialer apps have a tendency to lag just slightly from time to time, but I didn’t encounter that with Angel Dialer.

There are no themes available, but there are some customization options available which can be used to slightly change the interface. The only one I absolutely recommend checking out is the Page Animation option. When turned off, this app should perform well even on relatively old devices.

The free version of this app is ad supported. Those annoyed by ads can opt for the Pro version, which is functionally identical and priced at $1.93. Both versions require Android 2.0 and up.

DW Contacts & Phone [2.1+]

This powerful dialer and contacts replacement offers the most functionality of the three apps here. In addition to the standard dialer, contact, group and favorite tabs, the interface has several more options for sorting information such as events, which displays upcoming calendar events related to contacts in your phone.

But wait, there’s more! A sort feature available makes it possible to display contacts by first name, last name, frequency of contact, and more. There’s also a call filter that can temporarily block calls from specific people or groups of people. There’s even extensive support for interface customization.

DW Contacts & Phone is supposedly ad supported, but the ads only seem to appear in the Toolbox section, and only advertise the $9.98 Pro version. Free users also have a few features disabled, such as the background service for contact events, which means the app won’t automatically remind you about them. Both require Android 2.1 and up.

Go Contacts [2.0+]

The Go series of apps is one of the most popular on the Android Market. Most of them are popular because they are free, filled with features, and offer extensive customization via themes. All of this is true of Go Contacts which, in spite of the name, includes a refresh of the dialer and the contacts in one package.

Features includes easy group support, favorites support, and an interface that can work with both portrait and landscape phone positions. The most unique feature, however, is the theme support that is built into the app. Only two themes are available by default, but a wide variety is available for download through the app’s interface. Those who care about their phone’s appearance will enjoy browsing the themes to find one that’s appealing.

Go Contacts is not ad supported, and no Pro version is available. It requires Android 2.0 and up.

Conclusion

There are a number of dialer and contact apps available that aren’t covered here, including some popular options such as Dialer One. These three are my favorites, however. Currently, I use Go Contacts on my own smartphone.

Do you have any other Android calling apps that aren’t covered here? As always, feel free to let us know in the comments!

Most of us who use smartphones eventually start to like using text messaging. Once you get the hang of it and realize that you can reduce a potential thirty-minute chitchat to a mere sentence or two, then you begin to appreciate text messaging as an alternative to phone calling. But there are times when you want to send a message but not write it. That’s where TalkBox comes in. It allows you to send voice messages using your iPhone or Android.

TalkBox is similar to how you leave a voicemail message on someone’s phone. Like text messages, voice messages are short and to the point. While there are no limits to the length of TalkBox voice messages, this iPhone and Android app allows you to quickly tap a contact’s name and send a quick message. The caveat to using TalkBox however is that your contact must also be using the app. You can however also send messages to your contacts via Facebook or Twitter. This type of voice messaging might be useful for when you can’t type a message – for instance while you’re driving, holding a baby, or need to send complicated information, like street directions.

Setting Up TalkBox

TalkBox will probably be most useful for sending messages to people you communicate with on a regular basis. After you set up your TalkBox account, TalkBox uses your phone’s Address Book, Facebook account – or both – to link to your contacts. Anyone on your contact list who already has a TalkBox account will automatically be added to your TalkBox friends list.

You can also send direct TalkBox invitations via email, SMS, Facebook and Twitter. This method is useful for getting others to download the app and sign up as a user.

All your contacts are stored in a cloud which means you can manage and connect with your TalkBox contacts from either device you’re using the app with. You can also set up your contacts for group messaging and chats.

Sending Messages

With TalkBox, there’s no typing letters. You simply tap on a contact and then press the “Hold to Talk” record button then speak your message. Your message will be automatically sent after you release the record button.

The voice messages are represented by talk bubble icons. There doesn’t seem to be a way to preview a voice message after you lift your finger from the Hold to Talk button. But you can press your finger upwards as you’re talking to cancel a recording. You can also select to tag your messages with a geo location. Photos can also be sent using TalkBox, but they must sent as a separate message, not as an attachment to a message.

In addition, messages can be sent and published to your Facebook and Twitter accounts. A link to the audio file of your message is added to your post for your contacts to download and listen to.

Listening To Messages

You simply tap a message bubble icon to listen to or replay a message. Messages are labeled by length of time, and are categorized by date received.

If a message is pretty long, you can drag your finger across a bubble to fast forward it. To cancel an individual message, press and hold on the sender’s icon for that message, select the message, and tap the Delete button.

You can allow TalkBox to send you push notifications to alert you about new messages. Like Apple’s traditional text messaging app, a history of your voice messages are saved for reviewing.

Granted, TalkBox may not appear as intuitive to use as traditional text messaging, but spending a little time with the provided tutorials and tips for using the app, you’ll find that it’s not as complicated as it may first appear.

TalkBox is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Android devices. BlackBerry and Symbian versions are in the works.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/0_friendstogmail.jpg">Gmail is where I spend a lot of time during a given day. Whether I’m answering a fresh round of emails or searching through a pile of old ones to find important information I had either forgotten or misplaced, Gmail usually helps me get the job done in a short amount of time. One thing I never find myself doing however, is adding contacts to my address book, because well, that just takes too much time. Besides, I would have to enter all of that information manually. Where would I even find the kind of information that goes along with my contacts’ names and email addresses?

Facebook. Most of the people I know who I would like to include in my Gmail contacts are already friends with me on Facebook. So if I ever need to know where they currently live or work the chances are good I can just search for it there. But wouldn’t it be great if Facebook and Gmail played nicely together so I could have all of that information in one place? Well, now they do, with a simple little web application called Friends to Gmail.

What Is Friends To Gmail?

Friends to Gmail (directory app) is a web application that you can use to convert your Facebook friends list into a nice, Gmail-compatible CSV file. Once created, you can import this file right into Gmail and all of your friends’ information, like names, locations, birthdays, bios, work history, and hometowns, will be added to your contacts for you. The app asks for permissions to retrieve this type of information from your Facebook account, but since all of the work is done within the browser, Friends to Gmail’s servers never actually “download” anything, which should alleviate any privacy concerns you may have about the app.

One thing to note is that Friends to Gmail does not download email addresses and phone numbers for your friends. This is because Facebook does not currently provide developers with a way to retrieve this type of data, and for good reason. After all, we already have enough privacy concerns with Facebook. Friends to Gmail’s developer does claim to be working on a way around this for those of us that would welcome such an option.

As an added benefit, you will be able to add all of your friends’ birthdays to your Google Calendar!

How Do I Use Friends To Gmail?

To get started importing your friends, just head over to Friends to Gmail’s homepage and click the giant Connect with Facebook button. It will ask for your permission (as detailed above) and you will be able to download your CSV file.

Then head over to your Gmail account and click Contacts.

On the Contacts page, click on the More actions drop-down menu and select Import….

From there, a box will pop up that allows your to select a CSV file to upload. Choose the file that Friends to Gmail generated and you’re all set!

Conclusion

Personally, I think this app is a lifesaver. It finally gave me a good reason to want to keep my Gmail contact list up to date, which enables me to add friends that I hadn’t previously emailed to my outgoing messages, making Facebook’s information even more useful.

What do you think of Friends to Gmail? Do you find this app useful?

My guess is pretty close, seeing as you take them with you everywhere you go. If this is the case, I would also bet that you reach some of these people in multiple ways, like Twitter perhaps, or Facebook.

Twezr gives your contact list a major upgrade while still enabling you to see your friends and other contacts in the same place. If you have an iPhone, Twezr is an essential app. Imagine being able to look at the contact list on your phone and see emails from your friends, Facebook messages, and direct messages on Twitter, all in one place. See the benefits?

In this article, I’ll be taking you through the ins and outs of this application, showing you everything you can do with it.

What Can I Do With Twezr?

Twezr is your personal organizer – the best way to stay in sync with your close friends and co-workers.

Essentially, Twezr (App Store link) organizes all of your contacts for you. It takes all of the content they’ve shared with you (emails, tweets, etc.) and it puts it in one place on your phone. This allows you to quickly view and respond to the people you’re closest with, even if you aren’t near your computer. No longer will you have to spend all of your excess time logging in and out of your various accounts or running different apps.

One of Twezr’s key features includes generating a prioritized To See list with your contacts. It’s what tells you when you have shared items from your friends via email, Facebook, and Twitter.

You can also prioritize your contacts based on how frequently you’ve interacted with them, which offers you a way of sorting your contact list by the people you talk to and interact with the most. Twezr organizes all of the messages you get so they’re easy to sift through.

Aside from seeing when you get a message, you can also read and respond to your emails, DMs, tweets, and wall posts right within the app. If you have multiple Twitter or Facebook accounts, you can view those too. You can also post status updates on multiple accounts, which is a key feature.

Think incoming messages will be hard to keep track of with Twezr? The app also features an intuitive color-coding system, as well as multiple viewing options, like sorting by contact, message type, or platform.

Lastly, the search capabilities you get with Twezr are phenomenal. You can run a full text search across all your email and incoming messages, as well as search all your contacts by their first/last name, email address, company name, or Twitter handle.

To view some of the benefits you’ll be getting with Twezr, check out this short YouTube video:

Conclusion

Twezr lets you combine the profiles of all your contacts across iPhone, Microsoft Exchange, Google, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, IMAP accounts, Facebook, and Twitter and it creates a single comprehensive profile for each.

One thing I forgot to mention was how easily you can make phone calls, send SMS, email, Facebook, or Twitter messages with Twezr, which is definitely a plus. All-in-all, I was thoroughly impressed with this iPhone app. What do you think of it?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/gmail150.png">The Gmail team has clearly been hard at work with two new features released within hours of each other this week. When you thought the already feature-rich Gmail couldn’t get any better, they’ve added two new services, each aiming to make life just a little bit easier for you. The latest additions are the ability to restore deleted contacts for up to 30 days and the ability to grant other users access to your account without having to share your password, giving them total access to your account.

Email delegation has been available to Google Apps users but you can only grant access to users in the same domain. Gmail users can now grant access to their account to other Gmail users.

The uses for granting access are endless. You can give your assistants or colleagues access to your email account, allowing them to check and send emails on your behalf. If you have more than one Gmail account, you can now access your accounts in a secure and convenient manner without having to constantly log in and out of each account or keep two browsers open. Of course the only Google service you will be able to access is Gmail – all other services such as Google Reader, Calendar and Docs will not be available.

In order to activate this service, go to Settings > Accounts and Import > Grant access to your account.

From there you can add any email accounts you wish to gain access to your account.

An email will be sent to the other account with a confirmation link. After refreshing, you should be able to access both email accounts by clicking on a small arrow next to the email address shown at the top right hand corner of the screen. Any emails sent from the delegated account will be distinguished, by appearing as having been sent on behalf of the original account.

The second new feature is the ability to revert your contact list to its original state, for up to 30 days after any changes have been made. Inadvertently deleted a contact, or worse yet, an entire group? Something went wrong when you were syncing your mobile device with your Gmail contacts? By going to Contacts > More Actions > Restore Contacts, you can revert your contact list to its original state anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 days in the past.

What do you think of Gmail’s new features? Let us know in the comments.
