The Saturn was the console that pretty much forced Sega out of the console making business. Sure, it managed to push the Dreamcast to market after, but consumers were so burned by the botched launch of the Saturn, that it was simply a lamb led to slaughter. While that the Dreamcast was a fantastic console, there was nothing Sega could have done with it to bring consumers back to their side again.

Linux gaming rigs? Yup, they’re happening. With Valve’s Steam on Linux and a forthcoming Valve Steambox using Steam to run Linux games, the future is looking up for gaming on Linux. You can even install Ubuntu and Steam on a computer today, plugging it into your TV and using the big picture mode interface. The missing piece of the hardware puzzle is a controller. Luckily, Microsoft’s ubiquitous Xbox 360 controller functions well with Linux.

Let's face it, touch controls are terrible for many games. Have you ever tried playing a platformer game on a touchscreen? It's an exercise in frustration. Gaming sure isn't what it used to be. I haven't touched a console since the PlayStation 2 days, and I don't think you'll ever be able to convince me to purchase a new one ever again. Console gaming in the year 2013 strikes me as consisting of nothing more than overhyped first-person shooters and overly-cinematic "movie" games. That's not my style. I've always been into quality gameplay. It may just be the nostalgia inside of me taking over, but gaming was best in the '90s.

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) is, in my opinion the greatest video game system ever made. It has the perfect amount of old school feel and style, while still having good enough graphics and sound to produce beautiful looking games. The addition of two extra face buttons and the L and R button on the top expanded the possibilities for gameplay in ways the original NES just couldn't. Throughout the history of the SNES, over 700 games were released.

Among all the big names in gaming consoles, Nintendo is definitely among the top favorites. As a '90s kid, I associate much of my childhood with playing Nintendo games. I remember growing up with the Nintendo 64, the GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, and Nintendo DS. Through all the different iterations, the gameplay had improved drastically with new features and visual effects. Nintendo is still going strong and has brought out their latest generation portable gaming console, the Nintendo 3DS. Sony has finally announced the PlayStation 4, ushering in the end of the longest console generation in recent memory. Sony showed plenty of exciting games at the press conference, such as Bungie's Destiny, a new Infamous, and even Diablo III. However, there are some franchises that used to be synonymous with Sony platforms that are sitting idly and watching a new generation of gamers get into the hobby with no knowledge of their greatness.

I used to play most of my games on the computer. All of that changed when the next (that is, current) generation of consoles came out. For one, these devices had a considerable assortment of games and great graphics. Another consideration - perhaps most vital in putting me over the edge towards console gaming - was the price-quality. In terms of hardware, consoles function as an opposite of gaming PCs.

After months of speculation Sony recently entered the eighth generation of video games hardware, joining Nintendo, which kicked it all off by releasing the Wii U at the end of 2012. The not-very-imaginatively-titled PlayStation 4 will be released before the year is out, with PlayStation fans able to look forward to the 2013 holiday season with gusto. Sony chose to reveal its next-gen plans during a huge conference titled PlayStation Meeting 2013.

Sony has confirmed the existence of the PlayStation 4 (or PS4, as they generally spoke of it). The new console, which Sony describes as a "supercharged" PC, will feature an x86-based CPU and an "enhanced" GPU. It will also come with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM.

It looks increasingly likely that 2013 will be the year when the next generation of video games truly begins. The Wii U is already on the market, but the signs aren't good for Nintendo. Early sales have been disappointing, and there looks to be little chance of lightning striking twice with the Wii moniker. Which leaves room for Sony and Microsoft to steam in and steal all the glory.

I recently wrote an article about the biggest rip offs in the history of video games. In it, I was quick to point out that Microsoft charges $60 a year for a service that simply grants players the ability to play games online and a few other little perks. Sony, on the other hand, has an incredible service called PlayStation Plus that costs $50 a year, and gives users some cool extras, while playing games online remains free.

If I take a quick glance at my iPhone or iPad right now, I can see right away that a majority of the apps are games. That's because as time goes on, more and more high quality games are being brought out for tablets and mobiles. We all know the Angry Birds phenomenon but how about Tetris? Or Diamond Mine? Or a nice soccer game? With addictive games like these, it's no wonder that my Nintendo Wii games console is dusty and unloved.
