Try a new spin on a platform classic. With Mario-style sidescrolling, cartoon-style graphics and music any gamer should find familiar, the open source Secret Maryo Chronicles is a worthwhile diversion for any computer owner. Even better, you can easily create your own Maryo levels. The name "Secret Maryo Chronicles" isn't subtle, but neither is the game itself. Everything about this project screams "fan-made Mario clone".

  • 7 Video Games So Hard They Will Make You Want To Throw Your Controller

    May 28, 2013

    static gaming

One of the major staples of old school video games is the incredible difficulty. I've talked about the level of challenge in older games before in an article about the things I miss most from classic games, and while the challenge is great, some games take it a little too far. I'm not saying hard games are bad, but some of them can be downright frustrating.

  • Flight Control Is A Classic Game That Is Worth Going Back To [iOS]

    May 18, 2013

In Flight Control, you play as an air traffic controller trying to guide your planes to safety. The gameplay is incredibly addictive, starting out simple and relaxing and soon becoming downright frantic as you progress. Since the initial release back in the relatively early days of the App Store, the developers have continued to support the game with new content. Even if you've played it before Flight Control is definitely worth another look if you've not gone back in a while.

  • The Most Rare & Valuable Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Games [MUO Gaming]

    April 30, 2013

I've come to realize that I tend to write about Nintendo too much. While I absolutely love all of the old-school Mario, Zelda, Metroid and other classic games available from Nintendo, we must remember, "Genesis does what Nintendon't." So with that in mind, I realized that I would do well to drop some serious knowledge about the good old Sega Genesis (also called the Mega Drive in some regions, but I will refer to it as the Genesis for the rest of this article).

    micropolis-300

Remember when SimCity first came out? When you sank days into what by modern standards is a simple simulation? Nothing quite like it existed before, and it took the world by storm – and killed more than a few of your weekends. Well, you can experience the original city simulation all over again – free of charge. Micropolis is a free city simulator you'll almost certainly find familiar – but it's not just some clone.

  • THQ Will Be Missed – My 3 Favorite Games From Its History [MUO Gaming]

    April 23, 2013

A couple of months ago, a game company known as THQ was forced to sell off its intellectual properties and shut down. While THQ has not had the highest quality games in recent years (with one notable exception), it has had a long and storied history of delivering great titles, and I was certainly not happy to see the company bite the bullet. With the passing of a couple of months, I have had time to really think back about what THQ has done over the years.

    Blaster Master

The games of today can't even be compared to my favorites from way back then, and I couldn't be happier that there are emulators and ROMs available that have managed to preserve them forever. More than just that though, the internet has managed to capture some nostalgic gaming memories in plenty of other ways. Let's check out how with the following three websites.

  • Awesome SNES Games You May Have Never Played [MUO Gaming]

    April 9, 2013

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) is, in my opinion the greatest video game system ever made. It has the perfect amount of old school feel and style, while still having good enough graphics and sound to produce beautiful looking games. The addition of two extra face buttons and the L and R button on the top expanded the possibilities for gameplay in ways the original NES just couldn't. Throughout the history of the SNES, over 700 games were released.

    March 28, 2013

    win8games-300

Bring the default games in Windows 8 back to the desktop. If Metro-style, full screen apps aren't what you want when you play Solitaire, Minesweeper or Free Cell, you're probably disappointed with Windows 8 – only fullscreen versions of these games are offered in Microsoft's latest operating system. Some purists prefer their simple, desktop-based classics. If that includes you, keep reading.

  • 5 Sony Franchises I Want Brought Back For The PS4 [MUO Gaming]

    March 12, 2013

Sony has finally announced the PlayStation 4, ushering in the end of the longest console generation in recent memory. Sony showed plenty of exciting games at the press conference, such as Bungie's Destiny, a new Infamous, and even Diablo III. However, there are some franchises that used to be synonymous with Sony platforms that are sitting idly and watching a new generation of gamers get into the hobby with no knowledge of their greatness.

  • Simple Brick Breaker: The Old Classic Game Remains As Addictive As It Was Before [iPhone]

    March 8, 2013

    simple-brick-breaker-intro

Brick breaker games were very popular arcade games. You have layers of colored bricks and a tossed up ball with which to break the layers. Controlling the momentum of the ball (usually a white ball) is a paddle which you have to maneuver from side to side. The complexity of the brick layers and the speed of the ball increases as you go up the levels.

  • 7 Classic Video Games You Can Play On iOS [MUO Gaming]

    March 5, 2013

I've made it no secret that I am a big fan of classic gaming. I've written about NES games with insane values, websites for collectors, and even games that retailers overcharge for. Of course, not everyone is ready to run out and buy all the classic systems because they tend to take up a lot of space, and collecting classic games can be an expensive hobby. If you have an iPhone or other iOS device, you can play some awesome classic games legally on it.
