I remember when I was a child that every Saturday was shopping day. My mum would take my brother and I to this huge shopping center where we would get what we needed and then go for lunch before heading home. This was the 1980′s, a time when there was no Internet and the only way you could buy what you wanted was to go out to the shops and get it yourself.

Fast forward 30 years and the situation has completely changed. Now the Internet is King and everyone is buying their items online, turning online shopping into a major industry in itself. Amazon rules in a lot of areas but there is still room for other heavy hitters such as supermarkets who offer home delivery for groceries, eBay for that hard to find item and Groupon for that last minute unbelievable deal. You can download a lot of stuff too – all that’s needed is a fast Internet connection, some patience and a credit card. The shopping experience has been turned upside down and it’s bricks and mortar stores that are suffering as a result.

Our infographic today comes courtesy of Grovo and it displays some staggering figures such as the total amount spent online in 2010 ($143 billion!), the rising influence of mobile phones in online shopping, who dominates which retail sector, and finally what kinds of stuff people tend to buy the most online.

Let us know what you think of it. How much of your stuff do you buy online? Do you ever go out to a “real shop” anymore or is everything bought on a computer with a credit card? How do you see online shopping progressing in the future? Let us know in the comments below.

As Apple’s popularity grows, the company has been continuing to expand its retail presence across the globe. Usually this is accomplished by opening new stand-alone Apple stores. But while the company may take a walled-garden approach to their products, they’re sometimes a bit more open about running the business.

May 6th will see the opening of the first Apple mini-store inside a Target. It’s part of a larger store-in-a-store idea that Target is giving a whirl. The chain hopes that this concept will drive excitement among customers and give people who might not normally visit Target a reason to step inside.

However, other companies scheduled to enter Target are doing so on a rotating basis. The Apple centers should be permanent, at least so long as they prove capable of pushing Apple products.

Though Target has never participated in a program like this before, there is precedent for this idea. Many Best Buy locations host an Apple display where customers can try out not only the tablets (which are found at many retailers) but also MacBooks and sometimes iMacs. That partnership has been ongoing for several years, so there is reason to believe that Target’s endeavor will see some success.

Will we see any special deals on Apple products grow from the partnership? It’s too early to tell. Some retailers have discounted certain iPad versions lately, but even that is often restricted to only the most expensive versions. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Do you have an Android tablet? Do you feel you’re lacking in ways to buy stuff? Well, if that’s the case then Google is bringing a new app to your device that will provide you with access to 125 brands with which you can indulge in wanton consumerism.

The app is called Google Catalogs, and as the name implies, it seeks to bring a traditional catalog experience to your tablet and combine it with the instant gratification of online shopping.

Instead of having to call a number or drive to a store, items in the app’s catalogs can be purchased by tapping them, which directs the user to the brand’s online store.

Over 400 individual catalog issues are currently available from brands such as Nike and Nordstrom. Features of the app include notification of new issues, zoom (to examine product photos more closely) and the ability to create product collages for fun or to create a sort of wishlist.

Strangely, this app already debuted in August on the iPad, and only just now is coming to Android tablets. It is limited to Android versions 3.1 and above. Google also recommends an active Wi-Fi connection when using the app. It is, of course, free to download and browse.

The Holiday shopping season is upon us, so you know what that means. Troves of people are going to be flooding stores around the country and (hopefully) giving our economy a little boost with all the sales that they make in the process.

What are you heading out to buy this year? Electronics? Clothes? Depending on who you’re shopping for, maybe you’re looking for something unique or interesting. Well, if you happen to be interested in vintage or one-of-a-kind handmade goods, I think I just may be able to save you a trip to the store.

In this article, I’m going to show you how you can utilize Etsy for your mobile device. Mobile shopping is sure to be a hit this year, so luckily for you, browsing your favorite handmade goods site just got easier.

What Is Etsy?

If you’re unfamiliar with Etsy, the website, then allow me to take this opportunity to get you up to speed. Or read Ryan’s excellent summary from last year.

Etsy is “the world’s handmade marketplace”. It’s an e-commerce site that is focused entirely on handmade or vintage items and art and craft supplies. Items cover a wide range, including art, photography, clothing, jewelry, edibles, beauty products, knick-knacks, etc. All vintage items must be at least 20 years old, and range from old boats and ice skates to dresses, hats, and scarves. Sellers also have personal storefronts where they list their goods, not unlike how Amazon or eBay functions.

Whether you’re already a longtime fan of Etsy or I’ve just introduced you to your new favorite shopping site, you should be pleased to know that your experience with this site just got a whole lot easier, because Etsy has gone mobile.

By visiting the mobile site or using the new iPhone app (more information on both here) you can now buy directly from independent, creative businesses, and explore over 11 million unique (and I mean unique) items from small businesses all over the world.

Etsy’s iPhone App

The Etsy app for iPhone gives you one-touch access to all of the items I’ve mentioned above. Overall, the app integrates well with your cart, favorites, purchase history, and shop, which really gives you most of the functionality you would have if you visited the website.

As a buyer, you can search for handmade/vintage items, browse Treasury Lists, and make purchases right from your mobile device. Etsy’s search function works really well, also. If you search for “dresses”, for instance, you’ll get a lot of listings that you can scroll through and filter by location, price, relevance, or most recent.

The app also incorporates social sharing features. You can share items you find via Twitter, Facebook, email, or SMS. The app encourages you to sign in with your Etsy account so that you can favorite items and add them to your cart.

If you’re a seller, you can access your listings and latest orders, as well as use merchant tools to manage your business more easily.

Conclusion

I think coming out with a mobile solution for users just in time for the Holiday shopping season was a really smart move for Etsy, who should definitely see additional sales being made because of the ease of use of this new app. Now users can shop on Etsy from anywhere, even from another store that they also happen to be shopping at. How useful!

What do you think about Etsy’s new app and mobile e-commerce?

The Google Offers app, which was announced when the company unveiled Google Wallet, has been released on the Android market for anyone (in the United States) to download.

The Offers website has been in beta since May and focused first on Portland, Oregon. In July, the beta expanded to New York and San Francisco. As of the release of this app, Offers supports 17 cities including Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia and Austin. As you’d expect, a large number of other cities are “coming soon”.

Using the app is easy. Once installed, you “subscribe” to your city, and the app is populated with offers. If you see an offer you like, you purchase it directly from the app. The number of people who can grab an offer is often limited by time or number of purchases, so you have to act fast.

So far, the number of offers available is limited. I checked several cities and found that one or two options were available at each location. To be successful, the app will need to offer more, well, offers – but I have little doubt that more will become available over time.

In a bit of irony (or perhaps intentional ribbing) the release of this app coincides with Groupon’s IPO. Google tried to buy Groupon for six billion dollars in 2010, and was snubbed. Will Google Offers be able to compete? That’s up for you to decide, so check it out and let us know what you think.

You’ve probably heard of BitCoin, the Internet’s recent attempt at independent currency. It’s been all over the news for reasons both positive and negative – it’s a useful way of transferring funds anonymously, but the currency itself remains volatile and prone to abuse.

Many finance experts, geeks, and fans of Internet security have been watching BitCoin developments enthusiastically, trying to see whether the system really will work. As for actually making use of BitCoin, most people who want to give it a go have found the process confusing and just given up. So, what’s the deal? Will BitCoin ever find a place amongst respected currencies?

The Difficulty With BitCoin

Despite many useful guides written on how to use BitCoin, there seems to be an element of confusion and difficulty present. Even if potential users do understand the complex system they’re often thwarted when they attempt to purchase or mine BitCoins. People who don’t get hold of any currency straight away tend to lose interest.

BitCoin Limits: Buy, Mine & Trade BitCoins

Once you’re set up to use BitCoin, you can buy, mine and trade BitCoins with other people in the system. But you’ll have to use specialist BitCoin markets and software so that the transactions are verified in the BitCoin system. This isn’t a currency that can be converted at your local Bureau de Change.

For instance, a tourism operator in Asia might consider accepting Pounds Sterling or US dollars for their wares as they know they can exchange the currency to their own local currency later and it means that they make the sale on the spot. This is just not possible with BitCoins as users need to be in the system before they can accept payment. Once a person owns BitCoins they can exchange to their local currency, but only via specialised markets and only if there’s a BitCoin buyer willing to exchange. This severely limits BitCoin’s usefulness outside of its own ecosystem.

BitCoin May Face Government Opposition

Due to BitCoin’s anonymity, BitCoin has become the currency of choice for illegal trade, including at least one brazen site dealing in pharmaceuticals. The same anonymity could also cover the tracks of people moving funds internationally. Governments worldwide are likely to consider the currency itself as a threat because of this power, and will therefore look at ways to shut it down or make trade using anonymous currency illegal.

Who would put their trust into a currency that could be easily made inaccessible to them with the stroke of a pen?

The BitCoin Exchange Rate

In recent days, the BitCoin exchange rate has suffered a huge drop in value. This happened once before due to a scam which devalued the currency. As of yet, it’s not clear what’s causing this current devaluation.

However, it is clear to many observers that this new BitCoin currency just doesn’t have the gold backing of most currencies, nor does it have the public trust required for the value to remain constant.

The BitCoin setup has been carefully managed to avoid hyperinflation, but this will never stop the currency being devalued the instant the public loses confidence in the BitCoin’s worth. Some say it’s a form of fiat money – and in many respects it’s exactly that. BitCoin enthusiasts and pedants would claim this is untrue, but the similarities are clearly there to be seen.

Should We Use BitCoin?

There are a number of great reasons to support an anonymous, peer-to-peer traded currency rather than our regular banking, but the questions still linger: Is it safe? Is it a scam? Will it suddenly devalue out of existence? Is BitCoin mining worth it when you factor in power costs? Given that risks have been identified, is it worth investing in this currency?

Let’s pass this debate over to the readers. Do you use BitCoin? What do you see as the biggest risks of the system? What could BitCoin do to make the system easier for first-time users? Do you think governments will try to stop BitCoin use? What do you think will happen to BitCoins over the next 5 years? Do you have confidence in the value of the BitCoin? Why or why not?

And look out soon for MakeUseOf’s official manual on BitCoin, including how to set up an account, getting free Bitcoins, mining, and more.

The search engines keep on coming, and it seems like there will be even more new ways to browse your favorite HTML-stubborn site, and a lot of these aid you in carrying your searches nationwide.

Back in May, MakeUseOf posted an article entitled 4 Great Craigslist Search Engines To Make Your Searches On The Site Easier. However, the fun doesn’t end there, my barter-browsing friends.
Fortunately, the search engines keep on coming, and it seems like there will be even more new ways to browse your favorite HTML-stubborn site, and a lot of these aid you in carrying your searches nationwide.

Check out these four more ways to make your Craigslist browsing just a little easier by letting you search all of craigslist at once.

Allofcraigs

Allofcraigs has a posh landing page that offers a textbook execution of a GIF, but the question is this – does it actually work? Well, I’m happy to tell you that besides it being just a pretty face, the site does exactly what it is supposed to do. Just punch in what you are searching for, and sure enough, Allofcraigs will search all of Craigslist and then present to you your search results from all over the country (or in a specific region).

Besides scouring Craigslist, Allofcraigs will actually run searches in Craig’s competitors, such as Kijiji and Backpage. Furthermore, the site offers a Firefox add-on and a Chrome extension among a few other items.

AllofCraigslist.org

AllofCraigslist.org has quite the similar title to the first site that I mentioned in this post, and as you might guess, it does basically the same thing. I guess the only question that you need to ask yourself is whether or not you want to give someone ad revenue. Using Google Custom Search, AllofCraigslist.org allows users to search nationwide for items of interest.

Granted, it functions a little like a watered-down version of Allofcraigs, but it does allow users to search in the traditional classes (“for sale”, ”community”, “gigs”, etc.)

Dailylister

Dailylister is a lot like the sites shown here, but it lets you search in the formal categories that Craigslist has to offer. For instance, I could search for a Chevy Camaro in the category of “cars+trucks – by owner”, but it still searches for items nationwide. The site uses Google Custom Search (much like the others).

It does have quite a few ads clogging up the white space of your search results. However, they have to pay for the site somehow, right?

Craiggers

We’ve discussed Craiggers before on MakeUseOf, but perhaps the site should be given a second look. Out of all the sites shown here, I believe that Craiggers is the prettiest to look at. Even while browsing, the user interface is clean-cut and incredibly easy to use, and although I am someone that believes in function over form, I’ll admit that this site’s appearance was what made me want to use it.

Beyond appearances, Craiggers does exactly what you would expect it to, and it does it with style. The site claims to be better than Craigslist, and I’m beginning to think that this might be true.

Conclusion

These sites simply make Craigslist-browsing a little less frustrating, and if you’re up for seeing the site in a different light, you should try them out. Granted, you may be like Craigslist (who has kept the same style design since 2001) and appreciate the same old thing that you know and love. There’s nothing wrong with that, and you shouldn’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

What other sites have you used to search all of Craigslist? Have you ever used the ones shown here?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/intro6.jpg" />As of late there’s been a been a great buzz going around about Bitcoin, the latest P2P digital currency. One of the main activities of getting Bitcoins is through a process called mining.

In order to successfully conduct Bitcoins mining, you’ll need a working “miner” that will make good use of your hardware (more about that later). There are a handful of miners out on the Web, but many of them have a narrow window of hardware it can work with, or it is difficult to (easily) control because it only runs via a command line.

No need to fear, though, because there’s a great program that comes with a GUI that does all the dirty work!

What are Bitcoins About?

Before we start, we need to understand a little better what Bitcoins are and what the mining process consists of. Bitcoins are pieces of virtual money that can be traded around just like regular money, but with extremely low transaction fees (paid in Bitcoins). Bitcoins can also be exchanged for other currencies such as the US Dollar, Euro, etc.

Their value changes based on demand, which can be tracked at Mt. Gox or BitcoinCharts. At the time of this article the BTC to USD exchange rate is $10.90/1 BTC, but this rate can change every 5 minutes. Bitcoins are created by solving a puzzle that involves getting a certain result with random hashes, which is effectively what mining is all about. Another important feature of Bitcoin is that everything is done anonymously.

More information about Bitcoin can be found in this well-written article.

Starting guiminer

guiminer is essentially a GUI interface that can control multiple different mining applications at the same time, which come bundled with the program on download. It is available for Windows, and also offers early support for Linux. If you’ve never used Bitcoin before, you must install the official Bitcoin client to have a wallet and Bitcoin address (where you can send and receive Bitcoins from). Once you’ve done that you can go ahead and launch guiminer.

Interface and Miners

The interface is pretty simple. The default miner that opens will use your GPU’s OpenCL capabilities (if it’s from AMD). Otherwise, you can choose to create a new miner. Here you can also choose “Phoenix” (a miner from a different developer), a CUDA miner (meant for nVidia cards), a CPU miner, and a custom option.

I highly recommend you choose OpenCL for AMD cards and CUDA for nVidia cards. You should probably leave the CPU miner alone because the hash rate will be very low compared to your GPU, which is capable of doing many parallel computations at the same time.

For example, my AMD Phenom II X6 1100T processor gets roughly 3.5 Mh/s (megahashes per second) while my AMD Radeon HD 6950 graphics card gets on average 320 Mh/s.

Whom to Mine For

Once you have your miner selected, you can choose where to mine for. You can try doing things solo, where if you manage to land a block, you’ll get a total of 50 Bitcoins, all to yourself. That’s, at the time of this writing, about $545! However, you’ll either have to be very lucky to get a block, or you’ll either have to spend many months running 24/7 before you finally get one. You could also increase the horsepower and add multiple GPUs or even additional mining rigs to get the number of megahashes higher so that it won’t take months and months.

Another choice is to choose to enter a mining pool. Mining pools combine the efforts of all the members involved in order to get blocks a lot faster. The resulting Bitcoins then usually get split proportionately among all the involved and active contributors. It will most likely take you just as long to get 50 Bitcoins through a mining pool, but you’ll get paid after every couple hours of work you contribute instead of waiting until you get a lump sum of 50 BTC. guiminer comes with a number of preconfigured mining pools, so you can choose any of them, register beforehand, make sure you entered your Bitcoin address in your profile so you can get paid, and then start mining for that pool.

Extra AMD Graphics Card Settings

If you’re an AMD/ATI graphics card holder, you’ll want to be aware of the AMD Overdrive feature in your Catalyst Control Center software. This feature allows you to overclock as well as underclock your graphics card, to give you either more performance (and more megahashes) or more power and heat savings (and less megahashes). If you feel safe to do it, you can play around with the settings on that page, but please stay on it for a while and monitor the stats about graphics card, especially the temperature. If it starts climbing too high, you’ll either need to change your settings or manually adjust the fan speed if you can (should be on the same page).

For more information, you can check out this article.

Conclusion

Despite all it’s criticisms, Bitcoin seems to be picking up speed at a rapid pace. There are also an increasing number of online stores that accept Bitcoins as a valid way to pay, so keeping some in stock may be a good idea. However, if you have the time and resources, getting Bitcoins from almost nothing through mining is quite a reward. If you stick to it (and possible add some extra omph to your hardware), you’ll have a nice sum of money at the end.

What do you think of Bitcoin? Are you interested in or do you already do Bitcoin mining? Anything else you want to address on this matter? Let us know in the comments!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/helperlogo.png">It’s pretty clear to most people that use it, that Craiglist is one of the largest, if not the largest database of items and services for sale. Craigslist spans the entire world, and serves communities from the largest cities to the smallest towns. You’ll find pets, vehicles, tools, appliances, computers and just about anything else that you can dream up. The only thing that Craigslist lacks in a very big way is a front-end that makes any sense at all.

Craigslist looks about the same today as when I personally first learned about it years ago. Craigslist owner Craig Newmark is famous for his well-known anti-commercialism stance. You will not find ads on Craigslist. Nor will you see Craig selling out to any large commercial interests – he has stated that he has no plans to sell his site, even though it is easily the most well known and well-established sell-and-trade website on the Internet.

Here at MUO, we’ve tried to offer a number of different ways to improve how you interface with that enormous database. David offered five awesome tools to make Craigslist more useful, and not long ago I covered the Craigzilla Firefox plugin that helps make it more efficient to search through items for sale. Recently though, I believe I’ve discovered the most useful Craigslist browser plugin out there, called Craigslist Helper. Craigslist Helper isn’t so much an alternative method to access Craigslist, it’s actually a way to enhance your experience whenever you do visit the Craigslist website.

Setting Up Craigslist Helper

You can install Craigslist Helper for Firefox, Chrome or Safari. When you do install the add-on, the first thing you’ll want to do is go into the options menu and set up how you’d like the plug-in to behave when you visit Craigslist. The first tab configures the behavior of the plug-in.

Most of the options determine how the browser add-on will display the different Craigslist ads to you. You can configure it to highlight new ads that you haven’t seen, show image thumbnails in the listing display, how much ad text to show, and more. The next tab is concerned primarily with how each ad will appear in the listing. Here, you’ll define the width of the ad display, the size of the preview pop-up, and coloring options.

Finally, you can configure the thumbnail and preview image sizes to appear in boxes that are the right size for the method you usually use to access Craigslist. If you like to keep your browser window smaller than usual, just scale down the thumbnail and image sizes however you like.

Once you’re done setting up the add-on options, you’re ready to visit Craigslist and see how much the add-on enhances the experience.

Craigslist Helper Gives Craigslist A Shot Of Adrenaline

The first time I visited Craigslist with Craigslist Helper installed, I was sold. It doesn’t just make it easier to search through Craigslist, it actually makes browsing through the site a much more enjoyable experience. Each item listing provides both preview text and preview images for the item. All of these things, like the amount of preview text and the size of the thumbnails, are defined by the settings that you previously defined in the options.

For each item, you can add your own personal notes to help you keep track of the items that you like, actions you’ve taken to buy it, or anything else you want to note about that item.

When you click to expand the search form, you’ll see an advanced search area open up that actually lets you search for items across any area of Craigslist, not only the one that you’re currently searching through. This means you can hunt for items in different states, throughout all of Craigslist, or even limited to a certain distance from your local location. This advanced search feature alone makes this add-on total gold-dust – as Craigslist is infuriatingly isolated into sections defined by geographic area.

So, this add-on finally integrates different areas of Craigslist together into a more cohesive online application of sorts.

Another very cool feature is the alert option. If there is a certain type of item – like a particular gadget or an antique item that you want to watch for on Craigslist, just check the “Alert” box and define how often you would like it to conduct that search on Craigslist and alert you of any new listings that appear.

Individual listings are also enhanced by this add-on. And the beauty of it is that you can see all of the listing information without ever actually visiting the item page itself. For example, just hover the mouse over the link in the search results page, and the entire listing will appear in a pop-up box at whatever size you defined in the options.

The same is true of the preview images. If you want a closer look without actually visiting the item page, just hover your mouse over the preview image and a full-size image will appear in a pop-up window.

As you can see, Craigslist Helper really changes not only your ability to search through listings a lot more easily, but it completely changes the Craiglist website itself, once you get into digging for the items that you want. The ability to schedule searches and get alerts make it one of the most useful tools to access Facebook with any of the three browsers that are supported.

So, give Craigslist Helper a try and see if it helps you find those hidden gems more easily. What do you like about the add-on? Are there things that could use improvement? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Done anything with it? If you’re an smart type who is always coming up with great ideas, you may have noticed that most of them go by the wayside because you just don’t have time to do them all. Meanwhile, some entrepreneurial types have exactly the opposite problem – they’re keen to make a great idea blossom, but they’re not big on the ideas.

OpenInvo is working to fill the gap in the idea market by connecting ideas with the sorts of people who want to work on great ideas. It’s completely free for users to list their ideas and have them valued for sale to companies who want to use them.

The fact that the right people are being connected to great ideas is the key to OpenInvo. Research and development departments of big corporations are able to browse relevant ideas which they might be able to implement in their business, while entrepreneurs can search for the idea spark they need to create something from scratch.

Generating Ideas

Idea generators are able to protect the privacy of their ideas using different privacy levels within the OpenInvo system. It is possible to patent-protect an idea before selling it on OpenInvo, however it’s also possible to offer an unpatented idea for sale within a closed system which is tracked closely by OpenInvo staff. If your idea might be of use for the greater good, you can list it as a public idea for general use.

Some public ideas revolve around serious things like social change, others focus on gift ideas and silly things no-one will ever implement. What could you add to the mix?

It’s possible to list an idea in OpenInvo and develop on it at a later date. You can also join forces with other idea-generators in the system and collaborate on the idea.

When listing ideas in the OpenInvo system, there’s a handy wizard to guide you through the steps and ensure you’ve given enough information.

Buying Ideas

Innovators searching for ideas are under strict guidelines not to steal ideas from the system. Idea seekers must sign an agreement before viewing the ideas and if they view any ideas that coincide with things they’re already working on, they must be able to prove that those ideas were already in development.

Sales of Ideas

OpenInvo will calculate the value of each idea as it is listed in their system. This will depend on how much work has gone into the idea so far in terms of development and detail. Since OpenInvo acts as the agent in between they will take a 20% cut from the sale of each idea, taken from the proceeds.

Obviously, the sale of ideas is a tricky business and no system will ever be 100% secure from idea theft. Since it is possible to patent your idea before sale via OpenInvo, consider that route seriously if your idea is that important. If however, you’re always coming up with great ideas and you’re willing to trust that the OpenInvo system won’t let you down, you could be looking at a nice little way to earn some easy cash.
