It’s also a neat way to take payments for donations and events. For non-US users, there’s still some merit in using WePay for making payments, so read on.

Sign Up & Get Money

Currently, WePay are running a great promotion which gives you a $10 credit for new accounts and $10 for each person you refer to the service. These credits won’t appear in your account until you’ve received one credit from some other source, because they want you to actually use the service rather than just getting free money (also, this means non-US customers won’t be able to get the credits – sorry).

Sell Tickets Or Items

You can use WePay as a ticketing agent or a store checkout, collect donations or send bills to your customers.

If you’re collecting donations, it’s possible to create an official WePay donation page to help advertise your cause. The same goes for events, so the guest list can be managed and your event payments are clear and easy to process. Donation pages, stores and event pages can be listed in the WePay directories in order to get more exposure.

Anyone worldwide can pay for these items using an international credit card, which will be charged in US dollars.

WePay Fees

WePay aim to be transparent and simple with their fee structure. The fee per transaction is 3.5% with a minimum of 50 cents.

Co-Ordinating Accounts

WePay have made it easy for multiple users to view accounts. For example, you can set up an account to collect rent money from your flatmates. The administrator is ultimately responsible for the account, but other flatmates can be added so that they can view the transactions and bug anyone who is late with the rent. WePay will also send reminders to people who are late paying their bills.

Getting Your Money

This is where it’s currently impossible to be an international customer, although they say they’ll be expanding soon. Technically, international customers probably could take in payments right now, but they would not be able to get the money out afterwards. WePay could also be forced to close the account.

US-based WePay customers can link a bank account to receive payments or get a cheque sent out. You can even order a debit card for your account.

WePay Vs PayPal Comparison

WePay aim to make it easy for individuals and groups to collect payments. Collecting payments easily is WePay’s primary goal, whereas PayPal’s aim is to facilitate the sending of money too.

Fees vary wildly between PayPal and WePay:

• PayPal aim to take fees from merchants and the senders of money, while WePay defaults to take money from the person making the payment (except for donations). WePay customers can also choose to change the default so that the fees are charged to them.
• WePay fees are easy to understand, while PayPal fees take pages of detail to explain.
• A US$10 payment incurs fees of 50 cents at WePay or a minimum of 52 cents at PayPal (30c + 2.2% for discounted merchant rate), while the normal fee payment would be 59 cents at PayPal (30 cents + 2.9% for merchants or personal transfers).
• A US$100 payment incurs fees of $3.50 at WePay or a minimum of $2.50 at PayPal (30 cents + 2.2% for merchants) to a maximum of $4.20 at PayPal (30 cents + 3.9% for international payments), while the normal fee payment would be $3.20 at PayPal (30 cents + 2.9% for merchants or personal transfers).
• WePay is not yet available internationally, whereas PayPal is available in most countries.

Now another community-based site called Favo.rs has come out of Beta release with the specific purpose of getting professionals to “build and strengthen relationships by exchanging valuable help with one another”. In short, Favo.rs is all about asking and granting favors.

How It Works

Favo.rs works similarly to Twitter and Facebook in that after you join the site you build a list of contacts by following existing members, and by inviting your friends and contacts on other professional social networking sites like LinkedIn.

The Favo.rs homepage is set up for you to ask a question or favor you want, or respond to a favor or request. Your request can be a general one, or more targeted towards getting feedback on say your new business website; asking your followers to promote a particular product or service, or request introductions to other people who may be of help to you.

Favo.rs is like attending a professional networking gathering in which you exchange information and ideas, get connected with other important people, and ask for advice and help with your business or job pursuits.

Sample favors listed on Favo.rs so far include members asking other members to “like” them on Facebook, request for feedback on a re-designed website, a request for followers on Twitter, and recommendations for talented iOS developers.

Favors Feed

The hubbub of your Favo.rs homepage consists of the Favors Feed that lists the most popular requests and favors by members of the site. Another tab contains the activities of the people you are following, followed by a section devoted to the Top Members of the site who are the most active. All your favorite requests get listed in a separate tab as well.

You can also search requests by people, tags, and specific favors. It would be useful however if the Favors Feed could be filtered by topics, categories or tags. As membership for the site grows, the Feed will undoubtedly get very long and difficult to manage. Being able to filter favor requests beyond conducting searches might be helpful.

Building A Reputation

As you respond to requests and favors of other members on the site, you begin to build a reputation, and go from being labeled a Rookie (“help others less than 10 times”), to Participant, Advocate (a high level of helping others), and Benefactor (the top 5% of helpers.) You earn points and thank you badges that get listed on your profile as you participate.

Generally, Favo.rs asks that you grant as many favors as you ask, which will increase your status and credibility on the site.

Favo.rs is set up for you to broadcast favorite requests directly to your social networks without having to leave the site. You even get to forward requests to specific friends on your social network.

Activity Dashboard

If you find yourself becoming very active on Favo.rs, you can use the Activity Dashboard to get an overview of the top 5 most helpful numbers, the top 5 people you have helped, and the top 5 people who helped you in the last 30 days.

If you link Favo.rs to your LinkedIn profile and other social networking sites, you will be able to directly invite members to join Favo.rs.

Back in January we covered the 6 Best Free Online Meeting Tools to Collaborate With Your Team, but now I would add Agreedo as a useful tool for agenda setting, minute taking, and reporting.

Setting Up Meetings

You start off by setting up a meeting on Agreedo and sending out an invitation for team members to sign into the site to view and even provide input to the meeting agenda.

You can set up meetings as Public – which are visible to everyone – or Private where it is only visible to people listed as attendees. You can select to have minutes “moderated,” which means only the creator of the meeting can add or modify items. All other participants can only add comments.

When you send out invitations, invitees will receive an email with a calendar date attachment that can be opened in Outlook, Notes, or iCal. The online tool itself works in all major browsers.

Meeting Preparation

Agreedo offers four different agenda items: Info, Decision, Task, and Topic. These items actually help you see what is the most important information to add to the minutes of meetings. There’s typically lots of discussion and sometimes arguments about very important issues at a meeting, but in order to get things done, tasks have to be identified and assigned, and important decisions have to be made.

So before a meeting is held, it’s important to make and prioritize a list of agenda items for the meeting. If a meeting consists of the same team members then you might want to leave the minutes unmoderated so that others can add items to the minutes.

Meeting items can be moved around, but unfortunately there’s no way to assign duration times to each agenda item, though you can set up a duration for the entire meeting itself.

You can also put sub-items under each major item, and each section of items can be hidden as they are completed in the meeting.

Collaboration Features

What’s most useful about Agreedo is that agendas are posted online, which allows for collaboration. Team members can also sign into Agreedo by either registering on the site or using their Google log-in.

If you allow the minutes to be unmoderated, invited participants can modify agenda items. This is a good idea, but a more advanced process would allow for only selected invitees to modify agenda items and not every participant invited to a meeting.

If you select to have a meeting moderated, it means participants can only add comments to the agenda items. Even this type of collaboration is useful for making meetings more productive because you can actually start getting input to the meeting before the meeting is held. In addition to comments being added to meeting items, files can also be attached to agenda items. Links to online resources though will need to be posted in the comments section. There’s not a dedicated tool for URLs.

Another feature I would wish for Agreedo is that the Decision item be set up so that direct polls can be posted for say the date of an event, the amount of money to be spent for a budgeted item, and other voting decisions that need to be made.

Holding Meetings

When you hold meetings, Agreedo includes a built-in timer. If you’re holding a meeting online, participants can use a tool like WebEx to view the minutes online. Or participants can log into the minutes of the meeting and refresh the page as minutes are updated during the meeting.

Before and during the meeting, you can assign tasks and due dates to individuals in the meeting.

Post Meeting Features

What makes an online tool like Agreedo more useful than traditional methods is that all the minutes can be stored online for review, as well as printed or exported as an Excel document. You can also send a link to the minutes online. Participants can receive email reminders about the tasks they signed up for as well as view all the tasks assigned to them.

There’s also a “follow-up” meeting feature which allows you to check and carry over agenda items from the previous meeting to the next. This is a little time saver especially for people assigned to take minutes and do the follow-up.

No doubt many users of Agreedo will have various feature requests for this online site, but for now I’m just glad that it exists, for it is long overdue.

This is where you can not only read what others are saying about the particular software or business solution but also put in a word of your own. Also notice where the community has placed the solution among others of its kind with a rank.

The Value of Crowd Wisdom

The comments and feedback are a rich source of information. It’s not only the opinion, but also the professional profile of the person giving it that matters here. If the feedback is detailed enough, you can see how the person uses the app and in what kind of environment. You can also browse the list of apps the person uses for more hints and recommendations.

Explore People and Companies

This gives you a more accurate way to match your business to the community at BestVendor. You can drill down by Industry, Location, and Company Size. Again, the utility of connecting your LinkedIn account becomes apparent because you can click on the People like me checkbox and laser focus the recommendations.

Discovering the Right App Is Productivity Multiplied

A discovery and recommendation service specifically for apps is a needed resource. The sheer number of software, cloud services, and mobile apps, are making things easier…and more difficult for us at the same time. BestVendor tries to mow through the clutter and give us the app we (and our business) is looking for in double quick time. All with the help of people who are actually using it.

If you’re shopping for certain items, you may need to go elsewhere for the best selection and prices. That causes another problem, however. How can you trust smaller online businesses that you’ve never heard of?

Google It

Search is one of the best ways to arm yourself against potential scam websites. There are places set up for people to post if they feel they were ripped off, or given generally poor customer service. If you Google the name of the business, followed by the word “scam”, you’ll often find the complaints – if any – against it.

Please keep in mind that a single nasty report about a website may not be representative of a business, but when a illegitimate site appears, it rarely takes advantage of one person and then fades away forever. There will likely be many complaints from many sources. So keep things in perspective.

One issue with doing this, however, is time. If a site is new, there may not have been time for complaints to surface. That’s why you should use at least one other means of checking for a legitimate online business.

Use Retailer Search

Besides looking for scam reports, you can also use Google to check for general reviews through Google Shopping. A large number of retailers are found on this service, and users can rate their experiences. In addition, Google lists reviews from some major review sites.

Strangely, Google doesn’t seem to make any effort to organize these reviews, so you’ll usually have to find them by searching for the store’s name or by searching for an item the store sells, and then finding the merchant on the price comparison page.

If you don’t want to do that, or you can’t find the merchant, try BizRate.com. This site is another online shopping search website, and it does offer you the chance to browse and search retailers to find what others thought of them. If you still haven’t found what you’re looking for you might also try Reseller Ratings, which unlike Google Shopping or BizRate, exists only to rate online retailers.

You can also try older organizations, like the BBB, or local and national consumer affairs websites. Sometimes they have useful data, but usually you can find information about a retailer far quicker from BizRate or ResellerRatings.

Install Web Of Trust

Web of Trust is one of the most useful extensions for any browser, and it is available for all the most popular options. It catalogs user experience data to develop a profile for a site, which is then shared with all WOT users, giving every user access to the experience of all users.

After you install the extension, you will be able to see the rating of a website in Google search and when directly visiting the site directly.The extension has a specific “Vendor Reliability” section, and also ratings for privacy. If anyone else in the extensive WOT network has had a problem, they’ll downrank the site, and that will show up in your browser.

Better still, you can open the scorecard for specific sites which, in turn, will give you specific details about how well the site ranks and provide you with any reviews that have been written about the site. All of this information helps you determine not just how reliable the business is, but also how long it’s been around. If it is a new site, it won’t have many WOT entries, which will show up in the extension and in the site’s scorecard.

Conclusion

If you use the tactics above, you should have no trouble verifying a legitimate online business. The only sites you may need to be wary of are those that are new, since few people will have used them. If a site is new, ask yourself what you’re really saving by using it. $5? $20? $100? And is that saving worth more than the risk?

Yes, they’re like Facebook Pages, but currently they are limited to “businesses and brands”.  Google’s blog does not exactly state what criteria is used to determine a brand, but the first pages to be made available indicate the term will be flexible, as everything from TV shows to video games are included.

Like people, brands that have their own Google+ Page can be added to a person’s circles. Updates will appear in that person’s stream just like any other.

Google wants to do more than just include pages as a feature, however. It also wants them to become a useful tool for bringing in customers, giving them a reason to use Google+ in addition to Facebook. To do this, Google will be listing pages in search results and also launching a feature called Direct Connect. By entering “+” and a brand’s name in search, you will be sent directly to the page instead of search results. For example, entering “+Angry Birds” will send you directly to that page.

This feature is currently limited to just a few select brands, but will open to any organization “soon”. Any user can visit the pages that are currently available.

Now, that has changed, although you’ll need to have administrative access to a Google App account to enable access. As is often the case with new services from Google, the rollout for this functionality is a bit vague. Accounts that have access turned on manually should see Google+ available within a few days.

If you’re confused about how to start, you can check out the official Google+ rollout tips page that will help organizations enable Google+. The steps are simple, and should only take a few minutes to complete.

Once enabled, users will find that they’ve received a couple new features in exchange for the wait. It will be possible for users to share content with people who aren’t in their circles as long as they’re in the same organization as the user. There is also going to be a migration tool that will transfer existing Google+ accounts to Google Apps, but the beta is “a few weeks”.

Otherwise, the interface and functions will be much as they are for other Google+ users, so anyone who’s already at home with the service should have no trouble adapting.

EFactor fits into that niche nicely. EFactor says that it is the world’s largest entrepreneurs social network. It may or may not be backed up by statistics, but one thing is sure…it sure has all the all the tools that a wannabe (and a well-worn) entrepreneur needs. It has valuable knowledge resources and a mix of free and premium (paid) tools for the  entrepreneur.

Let’s become yet another member here and see if it’s worth our while.

It Is a Large Business Network

With a member database of 900,000 and that too from nearly 168 countries, EFactor can lay claim to the title. The homepage itself tells you that the Finance Request Network has over 25,000 vetted investors to help you get your business off the ground. EFactor is all about match-ups between those with business ideas and those with funds or advice. It is also a virtual marketplace. EFactor works around 4 main themes – find funding, gain knowledge, save costs, and gain revenue.

Starting Out At EFactor with One-Click

Just like any other network EFactor gives you a way to bring in your friends and contacts into your network. EFactor’s One-Click Network is your first matchup that will help you build contacts with similar interests. You can build up your profile by connecting your LinkedIn account too which is what I have done. But spend some time filling up the Knowledge Profile section.

The NOW Feed

The NOW feed is like the control center for what you engage in at EFactor. It is a list of feeds from all the important sections on EFactor. As you can see from the screenshot above, EFactor filters and feeds you information depending on the profile you have set up. You can connect to these resources like News, Blogs, Get Answers etc. and explore them in more depth. For instance, on Get Answers you can seek advice from the EFactor community and use the search function to read up old Q&A’s.

The Toolbox

The Toolbox is the resources page for an entrepreneur. It is a mix of a virtual marketplace and other real world resources. Most of them are premium services requiring payment. But there are some like EFactor Widgets and Biz2Credit which you can explore. Free tools are limited and I am not sure how useful they are in their scope.

The Knowledge Base

Knowledge and education is what you will like to seek as a fledgling entrepreneur. The Knowledge section on EFactor is chockfull of personal stories, whitepapers, PDF downloads, streaming audio files etc. You can use the filters on top to sift through the different types of media on the page. But a better way to go through the knowledge mine here would be to use the stages of entrepreneurial how-to as listed on the left. If you are a first time entrepreneur, begin from the beginning (Before you start), right on to Expanding.

There are many among the close to a million members who have advertised their services as mentors. EFactor gives each of them a separate page with complete bio, email addresses, and personal feeds. Again, you can filter them by area of expertise and the kind of entrepreneurial assistance you are looking for.

If you are looking to use EFactor as a free only tool, then the knowledge base, business networking, and the Finance Requests tool should help you make headway. You could do without premium features like Events and entrepreneurial meet-ups via offline E.Lounges.

No fumbling around with a pen, paper forms, calculator, or even an online cashier app. Everything is done and digitally completed for you and your client on your iPad. The iTunes App Store has two useful free point of sale apps that provide you with a quick way to set your inventory and client information.

Quick Sale Lite

Don’t let the Lite version of Quick Sale make you think this app is not worth downloading. Quick Sale Lite has sufficient features for users who don’t need an elaborate payments system or who perhaps only have a small inventory of items and services for sale. Out of the two apps I will review here, Quick Sale is the most well designed and seriously easiest system to set up.

The Demo Company included in the app provides you with pretty much all you need to know to get started and set up your own business. The user interface was designed with you and your clients, not accountants, in mind. The register buttons are large for quick and easy data input.

Even if your client doesn’t have experience with an iPad, they can easily type in their personal information which becomes a part of your database.

You can create and organize all of your items, services and other costs, into categories and favorites for easy tapping and adding to a client invoice. Quick Sale also retains all of your invoices – paid and unpaid – and it breaks them down into the days and weeks they were added.

Of course if you need more, Quick Sale Pro includes features for exporting invoices as PDFs, quote estimates, and credit card processing. But for your basic needs, you can simply email invoices to your clients, similar to how Apple does receipts in its stores.

Ring It Up

Ring It Up lacks the design, intuitive use, and demonstration found in Quick Sale, but it still has features that might fit your particular needs.

The Main Menu of Ring It Up is where you can access all of its features for setting up your inventory of products and services, itemizing expenses, adding sales contacts, reviewing saved reports and more.

The free version of Ring It Up of course has limitations, but it’s useful if you only have lightweight sales needs or if you just want to try it before you purchase one of the more advanced versions.

The app also allows you to set up your inventory of products and services to be added at point of sale. You can also add clients directly in the app, or import their information from your Address Book. The app also includes a feature for scheduling recurring invoices or sales.

Thankfully the developers provide a way to customize the homepage of the device, with perhaps your company logo or an image of your work. Which is good because the cash register graphic is a serious turn off, to say the least.

Let us know what you think of these free point of sale solutions. There are other paid apps in the App Store that allow you to set up cash register apps for credit card payments and backend inventory, but these apps will at least let you see what the possibilities are for your own business.

Entrepreneur

The link lands you on the page which talks all about building your own business. How-to guides, startup basics, startup financing, business ideas, and success stories are well covered. A series of articles on how to lay the groundwork for your startup business are worth a read. Also, check out the Two Weeks to Startup page for some step-by-step hand holding. Whenever I am on this site, I always make it a point to read the success stories for some much needed inspiration.

My Own Business

This is a business education website run by a nonprofit organization founded by philanthropist Phil Holland. The business education courses on the site can teach about the nitty-gritty of starting your own business. They have two certificate courses on Entrepreneurial Education and Advanced Business Growth. You can also read through the course without the free registration. Both are free. The course pools together the collective wisdom of many successful entrepreneurs, so expect to read and see (via videos) lots of first-hand advice.

Business Knowhow

The business website has tools, resources, and a knowledge bank for starting, growing and managing small and home-based businesses. You can start with business ideas and move through the other tabs to reach the one which says “Start Business”. Unfortunately the forum is closed, but you will find many tools like worksheets for starting your business, startup checklist, calculate your startup costs…and more.

Score

Sometimes you can’t do it alone. That’s where SCORE.org can help out by putting you in touch with a mentor who can guide you along the first steps of starting a business. The About page mentions two statistics which just might reassure you – SCORE is a valuable network of 13,000+ volunteers who offer small business entrepreneurs confidential business counseling services at no charge. Dedicated volunteers on SCORE represent over 270,000 years of experience across 62 industries. The non-profit organization is also allied with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

All Business

If you are planning to be a small business owner (or a big one), start with the ‘Getting Started’ section on this business how-to site. The site focuses on small businesses and supports them through insightful feature articles written by a network of bloggers. If you are interested in being a franchisee, head to the ‘Franchise AllStars’ section for spotting business opportunities. The site also has a large collection of videos with advice and tips for business owners.

BPlans

Putting down a business plan is one of the more basic steps when starting on a new business. The site is all about business plan templates and also about other business tips. There are more than 500 sample business plans available for you to use, all neatly arranged in categories. Also, don’t forget to catch the business planning videos on the site.

Inc

The online business magazine has an entire series of how-to guides that cover everything from running a business to innovation. Another useful section you can always tap is ‘Ask Inc’ where you can have your business queries addressed by experts. The ‘Tools’ page is a library of sample forms, job description templates, interactive worksheets, spreadsheets, and contracts. Some documents available from DocStoc may be tagged with a buy sticker, but you can always look through them for ideas.

The Wall Street Journal

The Small Business page on WSJ is filled with nuggets like How to Decide if Entrepreneurship is Right for You and How to Start a Business with a Partner. The how-to guides are very well authored and supported by podcasts. The above to example posts are all part of the ‘How-To Guide for Small Business’. The powerful search engine should also come in use if you are searching for business or franchisee opportunities to start your business.

Startup Nation

There are two things (among a few more) to really go through on this site. The 10 Steps to Open for Business gives you a step-by-step plan to plan your first foray. The Small Business Braintrust is a series of video lectures for those who prefer to watch rather than read. Of course, there are other vital sections like the community on the site as the screenshot shows.

SBA

The U.S. Small Business Administration site is the electronic gateway for all your business information needs if you are in the U.S. From financing to entrepreneurial assistance, the organization is a support group for the businessman. For instance, SBA promotes free individual face-to-face, and internet counseling for small businesses, and low-cost training to nascent entrepreneurs and established small businesses in over 1,800 locations throughout the United States and US territories. It has various other programs like the SBADirect which is like an answer engine for your region specific business needs. The Business.gov official government site has also moved here.
