There are an increasing number of people who love to use Tumblr as a blogging platform. As blogs go, Tumblr is flexible, stylish and easy to use. Many people use it simply as a light-hearted way to repost their favourite images, while others have taken to using Tumblr as more of a lifestream. Those people in the latter group may have noticed something annoying Tumblr did last year – they stopped letting you import RSS feeds.

WordPress has announced that they are integrating their own way for bloggers to make money. They have announced a new program called WordAds that allows website owners to show ads on their blog, and not have to rely on Google AdSense. The official WordPress blog announced the program, and took a little shot at Google in the process.

A big part of blogging is understanding your reader base. What is it that your readers are interested in? What type of articles do they prefer? What blog posts are they more likely to share with all of their friends? Getting a good understanding of your readers is a big part of growing any blog. It gives you the insight to focus on those topics that the audience within your niche find most valuable and interesting.

Well, I finally caved in and adopted Google Plus. It wasn’t willingly – with most new fads, I like to wait it out to see if, like 90 percent of most new and exciting online phenomena, it fades away into the ether of cyberspace. In the case of Google Plus, I was instantly reminded of so many other failed projects in the past – Google Wave, Google Video Player, Google Notebook….the list goes on and on.

Most of you probably already know that WordPress powers a large amount of websites that we look at every day. With the large userbase and support, you can do a lot of cool things with it. While WordPress even offers one-click upgrades to the latest WP versions, some people simply can’t use it because their server doesn’t support it.

Having created quite a few blogs, I’d like to think that I have a good system down for those essential first steps, and I hope it can be of use to you too.
