Seems like every other week now, Google rolls out new features for enhancing its social networking site, Google+, which it says over 40 million people have joined. This week it announced plans for allowing Google Blogger users to replace their Blogger profile with their Google+ profile, which essentially means tighter integration between both of the popular services and means of communication.

Blogger users who switch their profile will automatically get access to Google+ if they have not already signed up. This integration, Google says, will not only give blog readers “a more robust and familiar sense of who you are” but that your social connections will see your Blogger posts in the Google search results with the annotation that you have shared them. It also means that you will have one less profile to manage and update, while maintaining a consistent identity across the web.

Google admits however that if you blog under a pseudonym and you do not want to connect your Google+ name with your blog, then it would not be a good idea to make the switch, which is why Google has made the profile switch optional.

This new feature is currently in beta, and if you want to give it a try, log into draft.blogger.com and click “Get started” on the promotion message – or click here to get started right away.

You will need a Google+ account of course to make the switch. The feature will be more accessible from the Blogger site in the coming weeks. For more information, check this Google Help Forum.

Google has launched a brand new look for Blogger – Dynamic Views. These are basically seven new themes that are meant to revolutionize Blogger’s user experience. The new themes are built with AJAX, HTML5 and CSS, and are designed to create a new feel and look for both authors and users.

The new designs should be easy to implement and quick to load. It should take care of annoyances such as clicking the “next post” button at the bottom of the page every two minutes. With Dynamic Views, you get endless scrolling and dynamic loading of graphics as you go. The themes are not very customizable right now (only header image and background colors), but it should become more customizable in the following weeks.

As detailed in Blogger Buzz, these are the seven new themes. You can click on the link to play with each of them:

Classic (Gmail): A modern twist on a traditional template, with infinite scrolling and images that load as you go

Flipcard (M loves M) – Your photos are tiled across the page and flip to reveal the post title

Magazine (Advanced Style) – A clean, elegant editorial style layout

Mosaic (Crosby’s Kitchen) – A mosaic mix of different sized images and text

Sidebar (Blogger Buzz Blog) – An email inbox-like view with a reading page for quick scrolling and browsing

Snapshot (Canelle et Vanille) – An interactive pinboard of your posts

Timeslide (The Bleary-Eyed Father) – A horizontal view of your posts by time period

Or you can simply watch this demo video to get a taste of Dynamic Views.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/google1.png">For the past few months – alongside Google’s hot new social networking platform – the Mountain View based company been revamping a few of its product user interfaces in an effort to provide a cleaner and more streamlined look. Most of the changes are totally aesthetic, but they are easier on the eye and make the Google experience much more pleasurable.

A few of these new interface overhauls require option adjustments, so we’ll tell you exactly how you can give them a test drive. However, the rest of them are right there in the open and ready for you to use. Some of these have been around for a little while longer than others, but this should serve as a good round-up for what you might have been missing out on.

Search

Google’s most basic tool that brought it fame and fortune – its search engine – has received a basic revamp that heavily incorporates a black unibar that provides quick access to your Google+ account. Furthermore, the traditional sidebar displays a brand new distinct red and black design. These are just simple theme changes, so you won’t be seeing anything totally different, and the theme itself is used with most other Google products (such as Google Maps), effectively bringing all of these tools together.

In addition to these graphical changes, the Google search function has recently implemented a few Chrome-only features such as voice search, a Tineye-like image search, and Instant Page. You can read more about these functions with this MakeUseOf news article – Google Adds More Innovative Search Features.

Calendar

Here’s one of latest Google design changes that you may or may have not already accessed. You can change the look of Google Calendar by simply going to your options at the top right corner of the Google unibar and clicking “Try the new look”. The tool will function exactly like the Google Calendar that you know and love, and on top of that, it looks a whole lot nicer. Granted, you can always revert to the old layout by going through the same process.

As far as functionality goes, you may want to make use of the calendar’s Appointment Slot feature. It’s a fairly simple function, and it is designed for others to open up a personalized URL that you provide, view a pre-selected section of your personal calendar, and request appointments by selecting specific time blocks. In addition to this, users can see what times other individuals have blocked off for appointments. You can access it by setting up an event on the weekly view of your calendar.

Gmail

If you want to dive into Google’s new look using Gmail, you should go to your options, click “Mail Settings”, and then select the “Themes” tab. At the very bottom of the theme selection, you will be able to find two recently-added ones – “Preview” and “Preview (Dense)”. Both options reflect Google’s products-wide theme changes, but the latter seems to place lines of text closer together (think double-space versus single-space). The design’s goal is to provide a less cluttered page space, and although it succeeds in doing this, Gmail provides no new real options to play with.

YouTube

The new YouTube user interface – dubbed Cosmic Panda – features a cinema-style display as well as four templates for your personal channel. Each template coordinates with what kind of user that you may happen to be whether that is a creator, a blogger, a network, or even someone that just likes to post a little bit of everything.

You may have already noticed that YouTube’s remote player has a sleek black-themed design that provides a nice neutral color when posting on website. However, you can try out the rest of the on-site features by going here and clicking “Try Now”. For more info, check out YouTube “Cosmic Panda” Revamp Now Available To Try.

Blogger

As I’ve said before, Blogger is the way to go if you are creating a personal blog due to its low-cost domains and fully-customizable designs. However, if you have used WordPress or Tumblr, you probably are aware that Blogger just doesn’t seem to be up to par with its main user interface. That can be a real turn-off for some potential users, and that is understandable.

As mentioned previously on MakeUseOf, Google has provided a feature entitled “Blogger In Draft” which enforces a total graphical overhaul to the Blogger user interface. Presenting itself as a feature that is merely being tested, the interface can be accessed by simply going to <draft.blogger.com/home> and opting to make it your default view of Blogger. This too is just a design change, so don’t expect anything more than just a pretty face. However, the one element that I truly appreciated was the much cleaner post editing area that takes up most of the browser window.

Conclusion

Google’s invasion of new user interfaces has yet to end, so be on the look-out for more products and products redux. If you’d like to take another peek at other Google projects-in-the-making, be sure to take a gander at MakeUseOf’s Other Google Labs That Will Help To Keep You Informed About Google Developments.

What are your favorite Google makeovers? Which ones could you do without? What existing features could be improved upon?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/bloglogo.jpg">Many of you have likely jumped on the WordPress or the Tumblr train, but there is still a number of people holding out on Blogger. Google is keeping up with the Joneses with its new Blogger in Draft interface, and the web tool still provides a cheaper alternative for total customization and original domain names for personal blogs.

If you are a Blogger user, you may have occasionally wondered, “How can I make one of those crazy-cool contact forms that all the other blogs in the world have?” Fortunately, if you are also a Google Docs user, this can be done with relative ease (and absolutely no pain).

Making The Form

To begin, log in to Google Docs, and create a new form as shown by the image below. You can punch in a title for your form to keep yourself organized, but you could actually leave this section of your form as “Untitled” and it wouldn’t make any difference. In order to make it a legitimate contact page, you should provide users with the “paragraph text” question type. This allows enough room for lengthy questions or comments.

Please take note that the default form automatically inserts two sample questions. Make sure to delete the second sample, or else you will have a phantom inquiry that you don’t really need. However, if you want to add more questions using different answer formats (checkboxes, multiple choice, etc.) then you are free to do so. You can even make the answers required for items such as contact details. After you are done, make sure you remember to save it.

Ripping The Form

You may already be aware that Google forms tend to stick to non-customizable templates that often don’t mesh well with your blog’s design. Sure, you can embed the form using an iFrame code, but it still retains the same format as the pre-designed cookie-cutter templates. Thankfully, there is a way around that.

After completing your form, go back to your Docs homepage and open up the spreadsheet of the form you have just created. As a side-note, this spreadsheet will allow you to see all the submissions to your form. When you arrive on this page, select “Form” on the menu bar and then click “Go to live form“.

While looking at your form page, you should use whatever feature your browser allows for looking at the page source code. Since I am using Chrome on my Mac for this tutorial, I merely used my trackpad to open the contextual menu and selected “View Page Source“.

Right here, things might get tedious, so pay close attention. You should use the Find function of your browser (CTRL + F) to locate the term “form action“. When you find it, you should see this code:

<div class="ss-form><form action="YOUR_FORM_URL" method="POST" id="ss-form">

Make a note of where this line of code is, and then find this next bit of code:

</script></div>

Copy all the way down from the first mentioned line of code to the next mentioned line of code. If you would feel more comfortable pasting this code in a text app, then go ahead. You will be using it momentarily.

Installing The Form

After you have successfully copied your selected code to your clipboard, you should go into your Blogger dashboard. As I said before, I am using the Blogger in Draft interface, but if you are using the original UI, you will still be able to follow along.

First off, you should create a new page for your blog and entitle it “Contact Me” or something similar. After opening it, go directly to the HTML editing section of the page and paste the code.

As of now, you have basically completed the task of installing the form on your blog. At this point, your preview should look similar to the image below. However, previews are going to be different for different people based on the machine they are using.

Customizing The Form

As I discovered with my personal blog, sometimes there will be problems such as there being too much space between the page title and the form itself or the answer box being too big for the width of the blog. These minor problems can be easily fixed.

If you are having issues with there being too much space between the title and the questions, search for any

br

tags and delete them. However, if you are having issues with the width of the answer box, search for this line of code:

<textarea name="entry.0.single" rows="8" cols="75" class="ss-q-long" id="entry_0">

By adjusting the “cols” value to a lesser number, you can change the width of the blog to suit smaller screens or alternate browsers. Furthermore, you can actually change the fonts of the questions while editing the page. With enough customization, you can end up with something like the following image.

Conclusion

This is a quick and efficient way to place a style-matching Google Docs form on your Blogger blog, and the tutorial could likely be adapted for any other blog or website. You can do a lot more than what you see here, so make sure you play around with it for a little while.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/00_reward.jpg">Visitors are the lifeblood of any blog. No blog will have a meaningful life without any visitors, so getting people to come and read your web writing is essential for your blog to survive.

While getting many people to visit your blog is fairly achievable, turning them into loyal visitors is a bit more tricky. Producing great content is one way to achieve that. But you need more than quality content to keep your readers coming back for more. You need to entice them, and PunchTab might help you to do that.

Packing The First Punch

The idea behind PunchTab is more or less similar to the Facebook fan gate concept: you ask visitors to do something and reward them for it. If you can make the actions and rewards interesting enough, your readers will come back for more.

You have two options after signing up with the service. The first one is setting up a loyalty marketing program, and the second one is running a one time giveaway. Let’s look at the options one by one.

To start a loyalty program, click the “Begin” button.

Begin by choosing the type of site you have, then decide on the location of the “Reward” tab.

There are several types of site that you can choose from including Blogger, TypePad, and WordPress. Since all of my blogs are powered by WordPress, I chose it from the list.

Upon clicking the “Submit” button, PunchTab will generate a key for you. You’ll need to input the key in your site later.

WordPress users can download and install the PunchTab plugin directly from within their admin area.

To enter the key, go to the PunchTab settings menu.

Other than the key field, you can also adjust the location of the “Reward” tab.

The Reward tab will appear on your blog at the location that you’ve specified.

If your visitor clicks the “Reward” tab, they will see the pop-up reward window, and they will go through the process that you’ve set to get the reward.

Managing The Rewards

You can give virtually any kind of rewards for your visitors. You can manage these rewards by clicking on the “Manage Rewards” button next to “Loyalty Program Settings“.

Create your own reward by filling in the brand and type of reward that you want to give.

Set the number of points needed to redeem the reward and click the “Add Reward” button.

All the rewards that you’ve created are listed on the reward table below. You can trash the reward(s) using the delete button.

Give Away The Second Punch

Besides the loyalty program, you can also create a one time giveaway. This type of incentive giving is perfect for contests or a time limited bonus.

There are several fields you should fill in when creating the giveaway. Start with the name, description, and URL of a specific blog post.

Then continue to questions, Facebook page, and the end date. If you have a Facebook fan page, use the URL here.

You can see how the “Giveaway Ticket” will look on the preview.

The last step is copying the generated code snippet and pasting it in the HTML mode of your blog post.

There are many things that you can give as a reward to your readers, either in the loyalty program or as a one time giveaway, for example: (PDF) e-books, special short courses, exclusive memberships, shopping coupons, or even physical goods like mousepads, mugs, t-shirts, etc.

I think that if you are serious in your blogging business, you should consider using methods like PunchTab to build your loyal visitors. What do you think? Do you have any other ideas on how to keep them coming back for more? If so, please share your opinions using the comments below.

Google has been steadily improving Blogger’s service over 2010, adding features like template designer, comments spam filtering, web fonts and more, yet Google says the Blogger revamp is just the beginning of a big year of upgrades to Blogger in 2011.

The dashboard interface has been redesigned to be more modern and user-friendly, giving easy access to statistics, layout editing and useful features for writing new blog posts. Google used their Google Web Toolkit to create the new interface, showcasing just how powerful the Web Toolkit really is.

Compare these screenshots of the old Blogger dashboard and the new dashboard.

As the owner of a new internet-enabled phone, I have been looking at various ways I can update my favourite online services using the phone’s built-in email function. If I am out and about, and I want to update something, the easiest way to do it would be to send an email with any images as an attachment. Uploading to the actual website with a mobile phone is a lot more difficult than you might think (little buttons, little keys, big fingers!)

But who offers such a service? These tools are not normally offered in a very prominent place and you have to do some digging on each site for them. After some browsing, I found 5 popular sites which offer secret email addresses for you to update while on the go. There are probably many more but here are 5 of the top ones that a lot of people normally use.

Flickr – Send Photos via Email

Flickr is the first service I found that supplies secret updating email addresses. If you take a photo with your phone and you want to directly send it to your Flickr photostream then doing so is extremely easy.

Just go here to see your own updating address (Flickr log-in is required). Then add that address to your email address book (you can even ask Flickr to send the address to your email address book if you are too lazy!). You can also specify any default tags you want added to emailed-in photos. Since I will always be using the email function with my mobile phone, I chose to have added #frommobile with these pictures.

Then in the future, when you take a photo with your phone :

open a new email window

add your secret email address

add the photos as attachments

put the desired title of the photo in the email subject line

put any photo description in the body of the email

tags can be put in the subject line or in the body of the email using the tags: title.

Or for those of you who like graphical explanations :

When I tested it, it took 15 minutes for photos to arrive on my Flickr photostream. So it isn’t an instant thing. But if you are out and away from your computer anyway, 15 minutes won’t make any difference.

If you think your secret upload email address has been revealed to others, you can also easily reset the address by pressing a button on your Flickr page.

As soon as the picture(s) arrive at Flickr, the site even offers to put them on your blog automatically. Is there anything Flickr won’t do for you?

YouTube – Upload Videos

This one is a bit redundant for me as my Android phone already has YouTube uploading built in. But for those of you who haven’t got this feature by default, here’s a quick and easy way to send your videos to YouTube.

By going here (again, log-in required), you will see your secret uploading YouTube email address. Now whenever you want to send a video to the site, just attach it as an email attachment and send it to your secret address.

Be aware with this one that virtually all email services have an attachment size limit. Videos are normally huge in size so unless you keep the video clip small, you may have trouble getting your email service to accept it. So no uploading Ben-Hur! Keep it short, simple and small.

Facebook – Share Photos with Friends

The Facebook one seems to only allow the uploading of photos so no status updates or poking with this address. But if you regularly upload lots of drunken party photos to Facebook then go here and find your secret Facebook uploading address. Speed is of the essence if you want your boss to find out why you really took the day off sick.

Blogger – Post To Your Blogger Blog

Blogger has two methods of letting you post content via your mobile, and of course, me being me, the first method didn’t work at all! Typical.

The first method, which you can read about here, involves authorising your phone to send content to your blog. But when I tried, I got an email back saying that my “device was not authorised”. Wait a minute – a Google Android phone is not authorised to send content to a Google-owned blogging company? Spot the irony there.

The second method is to set up a secret blogging email address. Unlike the other services, you can choose what the second half of the address will be (so you can choose a secret word or phrase that only you will remember). You can set this up by logging into Blogger then going to settings–>email & mobile.

The title of the blog post goes in your email subject line and all blog images go as email attachments.

Posterous

I couldn’t do a post like this without mentioning Posterous, the blogging site which seems to be doing surprisingly well. The whole concept of Posterous is that you email in everything and it will be automatically posted for you – text, photos, mp3′s, videos, documents, the lot.

Just set up your blog, associate an email address with it and then send your blog entries with that email address to post@posterous.com. It will then shortly appear on your Posterous page. The simplicity of it is winning over a lot of bloggers and I have to admit, I am starting to weaken.

So there are 5 services where you can email in your updates. Do you know of any more? If so, let us know all about them in the comments so I can update my email address book…

As some of you may know for my previous post here on MUO about NaNoWriMo, where I set up a blog about me writing a novel in thirty days. Normally when I set up a blog it becomes like a new-born child to me ““ I nurture it, I take care of it, I fight off the spammers and so on. And as I’m sure Ryan, our SEO guy here at MUO will testify to, SEO is important to any blog – especially in the early stages.

As he discussed here in How To Start A Blog That Gets Instant Traffic, it’s vitally important that you write content that is SEO optimized for search engine traffic. Yet there is one SEO trick that is overlooked quite a lot by Blogger users which could boost their traffic; how they appear in the search results. And I’m not talking about where they appear, but how they appear.

Below is a screenshot of my new blog in the Google search results next to MakeUseOf in the search results. Notice anything different between the two SEO-wise?

It’s in the titles. You can see that my blog’s title is NovelInThirtyDays. Now for some reason I can’t see many people Googling that anytime soon. However, look at the MUO title: “˜Cool Websites, Software and Internet Tips‘. Many more people will Google things like that, thus driving more traffic to the site.

So in short, my advice is to change how your blog’s title appears in the search results. One of the best ways to do this for a small to medium blog is to reverse the order in which the blog title and post title are displayed so that the post title comes first. This will SEO optimize every post.

Here’s how.

Log into the Blogger dashboard and select your blog. For demonstration purposes we’ll be breaking out the MUO test blog again. By the way, it has changed significantly in appearance since my last blogger post, because I used it to test coding and themes.

Select your blog and then click “˜Layout‘ along the top. Underneath this, select “˜Edit HTML‘.

Using CTRL + F, find the following piece of HTML code:

<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>

In most templates it’s around 5-10 lines from the top. Replace that code with the following code:

<b:if cond=`data:blog.pageType == &quot;index&quot;’>
<title><data:blog.title/></title>
<b:else/>
<title><data:blog.pageName/> | <data:blog.title/></title>
</b:if>

Once you have pasted that into the HTML as shown in the above screenshot, your Post titles should appear first in Google search results (not immediately though, Google will have to crawl your blog first before it changes).

However, the SEO optimized results will be noticeable immediately in the tab along the top of your browser.

So now when people search a phrase that appears in the title of a post on your blog, your post will appear higher in the search results. This is a much more likely scenario than someone searching for the actual title of your blog.

Many of us have blogs that we update regularly to keep family and friends updated, to act as a portfolio for a business or for the lucky few ““ to provide an income from advertising. I keep mine mostly for fun and to showcase my writing.

However, I’d say somewhere in the region of 90% of the Blogger blogs are underperforming or have simply been abandoned. The free blogging platform, while good, doesn’t have much in the way of taking your blog to the next level. In this article, I’m going to discuss a few Blogger tips and tricks you can use to spruce up your blog in a single afternoon.

I don’t want to start changing all the work I’ve done to my blogs and website in the past few weeks so for the purpose of this article I’ve created a test blog on Blogger seen here in the screenshot below; pretty bland right?

Themes

It’s painfully obvious to any visitor that your blog is just another lame project that barely gets worked on if you’re still using minimia black with hopes of getting high readership. You have to make it look attractive and inviting. Not like it was made in Soviet Russia.

There are tonnes of Blogger templates available but I’d suggest this site. It has 120 really beautiful templates on offer that will rock your personal blog. Once you have found the theme you like, download it using the download link. There will be an .XML document in that file which you’ll upload later.

Go to your blogs editor at Blogger and select “˜Layout‘. Then, select “˜Edit HTML‘ from the tabs along the top. You see the window in the screenshot above. Click the button that says “˜Download‘. This will download a copy of your existing theme to back it up in case something goes wrong later.

Then, upload the .XML document that you downloaded earlier and click “˜Save‘.

Your new theme will then be displayed on your blog. There may be some missing gadgets which you can replace later. These would have had to be moved because of the new template design.

Getting Rid of the Blogger Toolbar

Across the top of all Blogger blogs there is that annoying toolbar (pictured above). Not only is it obviously there to get others to create their own blog but it also links to other blogs and is downright unattractive and unprofessional. By uploading a new theme, you’re getting rid of your blogger toolbar for good as the HTML which displays the blogger toolbar will be erased.

However, if you haven’t uploaded a new theme, a quick change to the HTML will get rid of it.

Paste the following under the blog credits in the HTML near the top as seen in the screenshot.

#navbar-iframe { display: none !important; }

Adding Promotion Buttons

Adding promotion buttons to your site (such as “˜Tweet’, “˜Digg’ and “˜Stumble’ can really increase your traffic, not to mention make your blog look better. For this example we’ll focus on Twitter, but by adding the HTML code for any other buttons below them will work just fine if you want Stumble, Delicious, Digg etc.

Click the “˜Expand HTML’ box above the HTML editor and use “˜CTRL + F’ to find this line in your HTML:

<p><data:post.body/></p>

When you have found it, paste this code below it:

<div style=’float:right; margin-right:10px;’><script type=’text/javascript’> tweetmeme_url = ‘<data:post.url/>’; </script> <script src=’http://tweetmeme.com/i/scripts/button.js’ type=’text/javascript’> </script> <script type=’text/javascript’> digg_url=&quot;<data:post.url/>&quot;; </script>

Click “˜Save Template’ and your button should appear on each post like mine here in the screenshot. You can add any valid promotion site’s HTML under this. Most are available on their website or can be found by running a Google search.

You can see that with a new theme and promotion buttons our blog is starting to look much better with less than twenty minutes work.

Affiliate Widget

Now that your blog is look in sharp and is being promoted, it’s time to gain a little revenue and make it look even more professional. Affiliate sites are a much better way to earn money than AdSense for most blogs and they look way better than the bland Google ads.

Go to the Amazon Affiliate Site and sign up for the service. They’ll have to check out your blog first, but once they’ve done that you can start adding widgets like the one in the screenshot below that will earn you money.

On the affiliate homepage you can see the option to add a widget or a banner as pictured in the screenshot below. Select what type you would like and customize it by selecting products from Amazon. While you get a percentage (around 5-6%) of the sale from your widget, don’t be tempted to put expensive items on your widget. People don’t just see a laptop for sale and decide to buy it.

Think in the context of your blog and the people who will find it. If it’s a blog about tennis, look for tennis accessories or DVDs; something cheap that they don’t have and can’t just walk to a shop and get. Odd gadgets or helpful books also bring in high revenue.

Once you have finished customizing your widget, copy the HTML given in the screenshot above (yours will be different ““ you can also see red rectangles where I blocked out my personal affiliate code).

Then, go to the “˜Layout‘ section in Blogger and select where you want to add the widget. The top of posts and the sidebar are good areas. Select “˜Add a Gadget‘ in the appropriate slot and paste the HTML into the HTML gadget as shown. Your widget will now appear.

So in just an afternoon you can transform your mediocre blog into a great looking site that will have subscriber counts soaring.
