It’s about that time of year when you might have already started thinking about what to give family and friends for Christmas. Personally, I can’t abide shopping in high stores – the crowds of people packed in tighter than a factory farmed chicken; the hideous odors of over-applied deodorants and all manner of perfumery; not to mention the terrible service of shop assistants who wish all their customers would just go away.

On the other hand, I happen to be an incredibly impulsive net-shopping addict. I’m like a kid in a toy shop on Amazon – “People who purchased this also purchased these:” is like poetry to my ears. So if you’re like me and have firmly decided to do all your Christmas shopping online this year – then congratulations, you’re already going to be paying far less than physical retail stores will charge – but let me show you some of the other tactics I employ to save money.

Save For Later – And Think On It

This a well-known paper-based approach to tackle impulse purchases, but online sites that save your basket can be used just as effectively. It’s simple really – instead of purchasing that item immediately, just add it to your basket, then shut the site down and promise yourself you can buy it if you still want it in a month. Amazon even has a specific “Save for Later” button.

Next time you log in to Amazon (or whatever site you’re using), take a serious look through whatever’s still saved in your basket, and most of the time that impulse purchase moment would have passed. Do you really think your dad will appreciate that electric pepper mill with toothpick attachment? Your sister doesn’t actually want that neon cat-scratcher, does she?

Of course, this relies on the site actually saving your basket for you. If not though – no problem. Just try to remember what it is you added – and if you can’t remember, then obviously it wasn’t that important!

You might also want to try this with your children – let them cut out and pin up, say, 3 items they want, onto a noticeboard. They have to stay there for a full month before you agree to buy them – so it forces them to really consider it. If they something else comes along in the meantime then they have to replace something already pinned up and restart the waiting time.

Save Your Basket – And Get a Coupon!

This is the same method but with a different result in mind. While implementing the “save your basket and think on it” tactic, I noticed that a lot of stores will automatically send out emails saying along the lines of “Hi, we noticed you added some items to your basket the other day/registered with us, but didn’t complete the order – perhaps this 10% coupon would help you?”.

If they don’t directly offer a coupon, they usually ask if there’s anything they can do to help – I suggest replying back with:

“Thanks, but I was trying to find a coupon you mailed me last year. I think I’ve deleted the email though – any chance you could hook me up?”

Half the time they’ll be more than happy to get you something in return for a sale. The key is in asking.

Searching For Coupons

This sounds a little obvious, but there must be so many people who just buy from internet sites without even searching for a coupon first, which is literally just throwing money away considering the amount of effort it takes. It used to be that coupon collection and thrift was a hobby for some – but now you’re just seconds away from coupons with the power of internet searching.

Sadly, the rise in popularity of coupon sites has also left a mountain of spammy clone sites that offer no more than simple affiliate links. So where do I personally go to find coupons?

RetaiMeNot.com (US) and sister site VoucherCodes.co.uk (UK): RetailMeNot has been around as long as I can remember and was one of the original coupon sites, so you know they’re legit.

FatWallet.com (US only): I use this for the latest GoDaddy coupons since I’m based in the UK.

MoneySavingExpert.com (UK): It’s nice to find UK specific site, and this one is an absolute treasure trove- not just for coupons but also freebies, a lively and helpful community forum, and general money saving advice. I have very few favorite sites on the internet – this is one of them – and I honestly can’t give much higher praise than that.

We’ve also covered quite a few coupons and deals-based sites before, so be sure to check those out when doing your Christmas shopping online.

Or… Don’t Give Into Consumerism

In all seriousness, the pressure each year to buy ever more expensive gifts for your loved ones is just disgusting. Christmas – or the winter solstice as some of us know it – is about spending quality time with family, eating and drinking well, staying cosy over the winter in front of a warm fire, and preparing yourself mentally for the year ahead. Spend time taking stock of things, reviewing your progress and goals for next year.

Whatever you do – don’t work yourself into debt for the latest gadget. But what about presents – are you supposed to just not give anything? Of course not. This year, I’ve been making homemade wines and biscuits for my family and friends, and I know they’ll be more appreciated than something shop bought. Put your time and effort into making something now, and the reward will be all that greater.

How about you? Do you have your eye on the latest iPad this Christmas, or will you be a non-consumer advocate too?

Do you have any favorite thrift loving sites you’ll be trawling for ideas this Christmas? Let us know in the comments, please!

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, traditionally is the start of the Christmas shopping season in the United States. Retailers across the country attract customers with some of the best promotional offers of the entire year. Black Friday shopping is the embodiment of consumerism, but also a blessing for those who cannot afford expensive gifts.

This article explores several compelling arguments why you should avoid cheap junk and opt for high quality, green and sustainable gifts instead, regardless of the size of your wallet.

For A Better Consciousness

Cheap junk is typically made somewhere in Asia. Not only does the low price indicate that these products were probably produced by adults and possibly children working for starvation wages, it also speaks volumes about the quality and safety you can expect. In the worst case, the products are contaminated with hazardous substances.

While the situation has been improving, particularly in China, it is still serious enough for The New York Times to regularly add stories to its subject category on Consumer Safety and China. Are these the presents you want to gift your loved ones? How does that reflect on you?

There is another aspect to this. Since the economic crisis in 2008, the United States has gone through a major depression and millions of people have lost their jobs. Yes, consumption can temporarily contribute to the stabilization of the economy. However, this only works if you purchase products created and/or manufactured in the United States, i.e. products that secure American jobs.

Moreover, studies on greenhouse gas emissions have revealed that large cargo ships are some of the worst offenders in terms of atmospheric pollution. According to an article published in the Daily Mail in 2009, it takes only 16 ships to create as much [sulfur] pollution as all the cars in the world. There are hundreds of these ships crossing the world’s oceans and they carry products from Asia to North America and Europe. Goods produced close to where you live, however, are transported by rail or trucks, leading to a significant reduction of the pollution associated with transport.

For Better Quality

Products made in Asia aren’t always bad. In fact, some of the most innovative and high quality brands are from Japan (Sony), South Korea (Samsung), and Singapore (Creative). Quality products last longer, come with better service, and in the best cases can be returned to the manufacturer for repair or recycling.

Greenpeace recently released its Guide to Greener Electronics. The report shows that two American brands, HP and Dell, head the list, followed by Nokia (Finland), Apple (USA), and Philips (Netherlands). Why should you bother? Well, ‘green’ electronics typically consume less energy and thus save you money. Besides, these companies have adopted sustainable operations, leading to less environmental pollution and less toxic products, among other things.

You can download the guide from Greenpeace.

For The Future

When you buy a product, you don’t just consume, you also support values. If I asked you to entertain the thought of supporting poor wages, child labor, poor working conditions, contaminated products, environmental pollution, waste of natural resources, and an ever increasing mountain of trash that will take hundreds of years to decompose, how would you feel? Most people are disgusted by these ideas. If you don’t want to contribute to those issues, you have to change the way you consume.

Buy products produced locally, support companies that make an effort to become sustainable (green), stop buying physical products and switch to services instead. Better yet, stop buying stuff altogether and start using what you already have, for example your skills. You will spend less money and you will spend more time with your loved ones.

Finally, let’s conclude this article with a story. It is winter after all, the perfect season for storytelling. This is the Story of Stuff…

Conclusion

When you go out to shop for deals this Friday or Christmas gifts throughout December, ask yourself twice what you are going to buy. Is this a safe gift? How long will it last? How badly does it contribute to pollution? And how will it reflect on myself?

In the United States, we have a special holiday that’s dedicated to standing in lines with strangers. It’s called Black Friday shopping. Savage and quick, this day is all about finding and buying the best deals – but others want to do the same, and stores have limited stock on hand.

Technology can give you an edge if you use it properly. Let’s look at a few ways you can use your computer or smartphone to grab hot deals before anyone else.

Friend Your Supermarket

Social networks are always a great place to find deals. Why? Because often, the competition is less than deals that are provided through other sources. Better still, you can act on a deal immediately, or at least take note of it.

Before Black Friday hits, you should find and Like any online and brick-and-mortar stores that have merchandise you’re looking to buy as a gift or for yourself. This will help you keep up to date on the latest information from those stores. Yes, your feed may become a little crowded as a result, but you can always, um, un-Like those stores later!

Form An Online Shopping Mob

If you know a lot of friends heading out for Black Friday, consider forming an online group with them using a social network. Even Twitter can work for this, if you all follow each other’s accounts on your phones.

Friends can provide you with useful information, such as the lines at stores, traffic, and hot deals. This could make your experience much easier. Where I live, for example, there are four Best Buys within 10 miles. Which will have the longest lines? Which will be inaccessible due to traffic? It’s hard to know until it happening. That’s where your friends come in.

Find The Best Route

Just making your way to a store can be half the challenge on Black Friday, even if you leave very early in the morning. The rush is worse than most rush hour traffic, as cars cram highways and major arteries in a blitz to arrive before everyone else. There’s many ways to navigate or map using computers, of course, but you can go beyond that. A tactic I find useful is to punch up directions in Google Maps, then turn on the traffic view. Turn off live traffic, and instead set it to Friday evening rush hour, which is usually the most intense traffic.

Now, examine your route again. Are major highways clogged? Find side-streets and plan an alternative route. Is the main road into a shopping center difficult to navigate? See if there is a back way in. Once you’ve done that, use a browser extension like Chrome to Phone to send that data over to your mobile. Now, your custom route is easily accessible after you leave on your expedition.

Upload Your Shopping List

Another quick and easy way to use your mobile is to upload your shopping list to it.

There are a couple of ways to do this. One is to use an app, like Out of Milk, which includes a website. You can enter in the items you are looking for on the site, then put the app on your phone to upload data. If you use an iPhone, an app like Grocery Gadget can do the same for you. Unfortunately, most of the good apps that can sync with your PC require that you pony up a few bucks.

If you’d rather not mess with a new app and website, Google Docs will do fine. Put your items into Docs as a document or spreadsheet, then open it on the go to make sure you don’t forget anything. Easy!

Double-Check Prices

Some people plan Black Friday like a surgical strike. Get in, extract the target, and then get out!

If you’re not intimidated by the crowds, however, you may take time to find deals that weren’t on your list. The Black Friday frenzy can cloud your judgement, however. Is the item really a good deal, is the price the same as any other day?

Your phone can help. Amazon’s app includes a barcode based price checker that can be used to compare just about anything, and is particularly useful for price-checking electronics. There’s also a wide variety of coupon apps that you can download for reference purposes on both Android and iPhone.

Conclusion

These tips will give you the edge over most other people during Black Friday shopping, with the exception of those who set up tents outside stores to make sure they’re first in line. Neither Android or iPhone has an app that can solve crazy.

Of course, if you have any tips or tricks you’ve used on Black Friday, let us know in the comments. Don’t worry too much – the chances that someone will use them against you are low.

We all like shopping. Even those who claim they don’t. Amazon has brought the joy of shopping even to those who used to hate walking between stores or just having to leave the house to buy a new camera.

But the more we get used to not leaving our chair, the more spoiled we get. How many of us know there are great Amazon deals out there but keep forgetting to check or just lose the daily e-mails in a swamped inbox? And how many have wished the picture gallery was just a little bit better, so the product images are easier to look at (I know I did)? If you’re one of these people, here are some Amazon shopping enhancers that will turn an excellent shopping experience into a perfect one.

PictureFox [Firefox]

PictureFox is a Firefox add-on that makes it easier for you to browse through Amazon product images as well as share links. After you install it, you’ll be able to hover with your mouse over any product in Amazon and instantly get a larger image of it. You’ll no longer need to click the product and then click the gallery to get the bigger image.

When you enter the product’s page, you’ll notice two things. First, the add-on shortens all product URLs to www.amazon.com/dp/ASIN. Second, and more importantly, you get a completely different product gallery. To access it, look for the small orange icon on the top left of the product image.

This will open PictureFox’s gallery (clicking on the picture itself will open the regular Amazon gallery). When a product image is available in HD you can click on it to view it in full size. Otherwise, you can easily browse through all the variants and colors of the product. You no longer have to click on each thumbnail separately to view the image, which is quite a relief.

PictureFox makes Amazon browsing much more visual, and makes it much easier to see all the images in good quality, size, and zoom.

Amazon Deals! [Chrome]

If you’re more into special Amazon deals, you might like Amazon Deals! add-on. This is a Chrome add-on which helps you keep track of all those discounts and price drops Amazon frequently has. The add-on places a small Amazon button in your add-on bar, which, when clicked, displays a list of all the latest deals on Amazon, including links, prices and posting date.

By default, every time you click on the icon, you’ll get the full deals list starting with the newest. If you want to browse just a certain category, click the “Categories” link at the bottom and choose the category you’d like to browse. Note that when you click elsewhere and the window closes, it will display the general newest links again. There is no way that I could see to make the add-on always display just one category by default.

You can also use the add-on to search on Amazon if you want to perform a quick search without opening the website. From here you can click the links to get to the actual product pages.

Amazon Deals! is not the most customizable add-on, but if general deals are what you’re after, it definitely provides easy access to those.

PriceWatcher [Windows & Mac]

PriceWatcher (formerly AmazonWatcher) is a downloadable app that helps you track specific Amazon products. If you’re serious about getting the best deals, PriceWatcher will help you grab what you want at exactly the right time.

You can easily search and add products within the program’s interface, and then set it to alert you when the price drops to your requested price, or when an out-of-stock item comes back into stock. You can also set it to automatically add this product to your cart at the right moment. The program can also be configured to send e-mail alerts, in case you’re away from your computer when the desired price drop occurs.

As far as customizing goes, you can set how often PriceWatcher will check for changes in your items, choose how bothersome it would be when alerting you about it, and control the program’s startup. You can also select what the alert sounds like, but you can only choose WAV files.

PriceWatcher is well-made and easy to use, and can definitely help you grab some deals when you’re looking for something specific and have the patience to wait for it.

Bonus: Kindle Daily Deal

This is no great secret, but many people still don’t know about it. If you own a Kindle (or a Kindle account), you can get a different book every day for peanuts. Turn your browser over to http://amzn.to/kindeal and enjoy interesting books for a dollar or two.

These are really good Amazon shopping deals, especially when many eBooks today cost the same as paper ones.

Conclusion

Amazon keeps evolving, and some will say they are very well near perfect. But nothing is ever really perfect, and us tweakers will always look for ways to make things just a little bit better. With time, Amazon may integrate these things into the website itself, and then we’ll be on the lookout again to find things that make it even better!

Know of some more enhancers that make Amazon better? Let us know about them in the comments.

I’m a university student, and as you might be able to guess, I’m all about the free stuff – food, swag, school supplies….I guess it’s just nice when you don’t have to spend what little money you have.

Fortunately, in my StumbleUpon adventures, I was brought into the courts of Hey, It’s Free! (HIF), a nifty little website that has taken on the mission of going out and finding all sorts of free items for you to take advantage of. You might not be interested in some of this stuff, but there’s a chance you might find something (even if it’s a little odd) to grab.

Get Tons Of Stuff For Free

You have to keep in mind that HIF is simply a blog, and with that in mind, the entries may not always be targeted at your personal taste. However, skimming through the site, you will find a variety of everyday items that you can pick up for absolutely nothing at all.

For instance, a while back, HIF author Goob once found a way to get a box of Honey Nut Cheerios totally free of charge. If you’re like me – young, unmarried, and living on a budget – you’ll know that cereal can definitely last a long time (bread, too, if you scrape off the mold… right?). It’s absolutely free stuff like this that makes it worthwhile.

Keep in mind that a lot of this free stuff is typically going to just be of a promotional nature, so don’t expect to find exactly what you want. However, there are a few cool things to check out. One thing HIF was good about was setting up a search function on the site, and that is something I always look for when visiting publications such as this one.

Beyond that, HIF has a full set of categories that you can pick and choose from to find lots of goods. Below are a few things that I found on the site. Some of these may no longer be available since they were just limited offers, but it does just go to show you some of the awesome items that HIF shares with the world.

Free Amazon $5 Video Credit

Free Chick-fil-A Breakfast

Free Redbox Movie Rental

Free Outback Steakhouse Dinner

Aside from the offers shown here, HIF has a page devoted entirely to coupons. These may not always get you free stuff, but they sure will help things out.

Check Out The Fun Freebies

Besides all the basic stuff, you will find a pretty nifty section of the site called “Top Rated Freebies”. Within this portion of the site, you’ll see a list of items such as “Free Birthday Meals/Gifts”, the “Free Museum Admissions List”, and even “Free Magazines” for those of you who like to read things in hardcopy.

However, let’s talk a little bit about these free birthday meals. Back when I was in high school, while eating at a restaurant, I once saw a good friend eating right across the room. As a prank, I went to the hostess and asked her if she would get the waiters to sing “Happy Birthday” to the poor girl (despite the fact it was not actually her birthday). Unfortunately, this restaurant did not perform such tunes on guests’ birthdays, but the hostess had no problem with me leading the entire restaurant in song. So I did.

As it turned out, my dear friend was so embarrassed that the cooks prepared her a sympathy caramel pie totally free of charge. That being said, there are dozens of restaurants out there just like this one that want to give you free food for your birthday. Fortunately, HIF has set out to find these restaurants (including places such as Spaghetti Warehouse and Red Robin), so you can take advantage of these offers.

Conclusion

We all like free stuff here on MakeUseOf, so why not let that cross over into real-world items, too? Take a gander at Hey, It’s Free!, and you just might be able to find a treasure.

Have you ever found anything on Hey, It’s Free? On what other sites have you been able to find free stuff? Let’s hear about your discoveries in the comments.

When it comes to travel, Microsoft Bing gives us a better deal than Google. Google has a cool tool in the experimental Google Hotel Finder. Google has some travel plans with its purchase of ITA Software. You can also use Google to do a quick flight search by typing in something like flight New York to London and get a scheduled flight list. But this article is not about Google…it’s about Bing Travel and how it has taken off while its chief rival revs up its engines.

Bing Travel is a more packaged offering. While Google’s travel features still don’t look like a one-window solution, Bing’s travel page resembles what you will normally find in any well designed travel website. One of the key features on Bing Travel is the Flight Predictor tool. The flight prediction helps you guess the best time to buy cheap airfare tickets for flights from most major U.S. and Canadian cities to destinations worldwide.

Let’s Take a Flight

Searching for a flight starts off in the usual way. You type in your origin and destination, and the date. You need to specify if it’s a one-way, round-trip, or a multi-city flight for the flight engine to work out your schedule and deals if any.

Note: You can also search for flights from the Bing homepage.

With one click you get multiple points to compare and reckon if it’s the right (and cheapest) flight for you. Bing lists all airfares for the mentioned route. You can use the filters on the left side to further refine your results.

You can also open up other travel and booking sites in separate tabs to go through their airfares. Sites which help you to compare airfares include: Expedia, Hotwire, Cheaptickets, Priceline, American Airlines, and Cheapoair.

Bing Travel itself tries to find you the lowest airfare available between two cities. But Bing Travel takes this base figure and also gives you a few more multi-dimensional tools to make the right ticketing decision and save money.

Wait For the Cheapest Airfare with the Price Predictor

The Price Predictor tells you if the airfare is going to rise or fall within the next few days. It helps you to take a wait and watch policy for buying cheaper plane tickets. Bing Travel says that their predictive technology is about 75% accurate and on average, customers will save over $50 on a typical round-trip transaction. With each search Bing mentions the confidence percentage.

Travel tips on the price fluctuations are marked out with colored arrows. You can click on the arrow or on the Details and Fare History link to read about the price prediction in more detail (as in the above screenshot). Your decision boils down to your urgency and your risk tolerance.

You can check the daily low fare history graph to get an idea on the seasonal price drops.

Grab The Deals For More Cheaper Airfares

Travel Bing keeps track of the price drops on a particular route. These are highlighted as deals for some of the major destinations on the Deals tab. Bing Travel uses historical data to compare fares and find the variation with the average fare. It’s is the same price predictor technology at work but with some extra tips (for instance: as highlighted in yellow) that explain why this airfare could be a deal maker or a deal breaker for you.

A calendar which pops up when you click on the ‘View Dates’ link gives you an idea of the days and dates when the deal is available. The onward and return journeys are both shown separately with their deals.

Read more: How deals work?

With a Windows Live ID and a Bing Travel account, you can track your airfares. You can also befriend Bing Travel on Facebook and get updates on cheap airfare tickets. With the cheapest airfare decided, you can jump directly to the ticketing website from Bing Travel with a click on the link for the booking site.

Bing Travel is a neat web application to rack up airfare savings while you accumulate all those frequent flyer miles. If you are a busy traveler, the dollars in savings can really add up.

Every time I watch an episode of Extreme Couponing, I have to wonder if the results are worth the effort. Buying hundreds of dollars worth of stuff for a fraction of the price sounds great, but most people don’t want to dedicate an entire day planning a trip to the store.

For saner shoppers, smartphones are an excellent way to save money without going berserk. There are numerous apps that catalog and list coupon codes – so many, in fact, that slogging through them can be a chore. Fortunately, I’ve already done that for you, and I’ve come away with three apps that stand out from the crowd.

Coupon Cloud

Just look at the name of this Android coupon app. Catchy, right? It’s also not really true, because there’s nothing that would fit the definition of cloud computing here. You should forgive it for its misleading name however, because it’s a great coupon app.

When I first started this app I noticed immediately how smooth it felt and how quickly it loaded. This is not something that can be taken for granted. It seems that everyone has their own take on the coupon app, but many of the entries are slow and clunky.

In addition to this, it’s just simple. This does mean that it lacks the features of the other two apps, but it also means deals are easy to find if you want to search by category rather than store or location. Also, I noticed that Coupon Cloud seems to focus on online offers rather than local ones, which is a niche the other apps I came to like don’t fill.

GeoQpon

Want to find deals near you? GeoQpon is the app for you. As the name implies, it’s focused on presenting users with deals based on location. That’s handy for many users, but it will be of particular use to people who travel frequently.

There’s a lot of selection presented by this app, but despite that, the menus remain easy to use. The entire experience feels nearly as quick as Coupon Cloud, which is considerably more limited in scope. Filtering is here in spades as well, as users can list coupons by category and view them based on either location or brand.

Once you’ve decided a deal is appealing you can open it via Google Maps using the app interface or you can call the store for directions and hours. This is another trait that makes this app stand out, as not all coupon apps make it so easy to find the deals that they list.

Grocery Smarts

At first glance, Grocery Smarts is a rather ugly little app. While fairly smooth, it’s mostly done in black and white, which gives off an amateur impression compared to the other apps listed here.

As I dug deeper however, I found that I liked what Grocery Smarts offers. Calling this a coupon app isn’t entirely accurate. Instead, this app sorts through grocery store advertisements and lists all of their current deals, including those that do not require a coupon. Often these deals can save you even more than coupons do.

Better yet, Grocery Smarts lets you add items to a list, and will then tell you the expected total of your purchases. You can save the list and retrieve it when you do your shopping. These features are enough for me to forgive the unpleasant appearance – although hopefully the developers will address it.

Conclusion

These three apps are my personal favorites, excluding some of the more obvious contenders such as Groupon. However, there are a lot of coupon apps on the market, and while I tried many of them I didn’t try them all. If you use a coupon app that you believe others should try, let us know about the best Android coupon apps in the comments.

Most of us like to make a little cash every now and then by selling off unwanted things. Maybe we hold a garage sale, a car boot sale, take things to a flea market or sell things online. Whatever the method, the theory is the same – get rid of that old stuff and increase the amount of cash we have instead.

For those of us who sell things online, many would instantly turn to eBay, Craigslist or some local directory in order to place a listing. Most of us would completely forget about Amazon as a place where everyday people can actually sell their goods. But Amazon’s not just for the professional retailers and it’s really quite easy to get started.

Getting Started As An Amazon Seller

If you sell fewer than 40 items per month you’re classed as a non-professional seller and you’ll only be charged .99c per sale plus a variable referral fee and a closing fee (all detailed here).

Anyone with an Amazon account can get started selling items. We’ll take you through a few different ways how to sell on Amazon, when we get to listing products for sale.

What Can You Sell Through Amazon?

Amazon allows you to sell a number of different items, including electronics, CDs, DVDs, toys, games, baby products and musical instruments. If you want to start with something simple, try a book or a CD, since you’re unlikely to have as many problems with versions and formats as you are with DVDs, computer games or electronics.

Shipping Fees & Delivery Times

To ensure you deliver your items in a timely manner and that your shipping fees aren’t too costly, it’s recommended that you list your items for sale with whichever Amazon store is your local one. For instance, if you live in the United Kingdom and you sell an item on Amazon.com, an American buyer will expect prompt, cheap delivery that you may be unable to supply.

If you’re unsure whether or not a country has its own Amazon site, check this page.

Listing Your Product For Sale On Amazon

Selling items on Amazon always begins with a search for the exact product. This is because you can’t sell any items that don’t already exist in Amazon’s listings. So, that old teapot will have to be sold somewhere else, sorry!

The best way to list your item for sale is to search for something specific, such as the ISBN of a book. There are then two different ways to go about selling items on Amazon.

First Method

Click on the “Sell your stuff” button found in many places on Amazon and it will take you to this page.

From here, a search for an item will take you to the selling page for that item.

Second Method

Another way to begin selling is to search for the item and click on the “Sell on Amazon” button which appears at the bottom right hand side. This will take you to the same page.

For any Amazon sale you must ensure that the product is exactly the same as the listed product. You also should take care to list the condition correctly and to give details if possible.

If the product you sell is not exactly what you listed, you should expect to get bad feedback from customers who will be rightfully demanding a refund.

Then it just comes down to listing your selling price, quantity of items available, shipping method, then starting a seller account and nominating a way Amazon can pay you. Payments will normally be transferred to a bank account, which is yet another reason to ensure you sell your items with the local version of Amazon. Ensure you can get paid before you list your products for sale!

Selling Through Amazon Versus eBay

The main difference with Amazon versus eBay is that on Amazon you can nominate your selling price and you know exactly how much you will get for the sale. On eBay, you are taking a gamble and in many cases, you may end up getting nothing at all.

More Amazon Reading & Places To Sell Your Goods

Here’s some other great places to try selling or buying things other than Amazon:

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/bartering.jpg">You may or may not know about the age-old practice of bartering, but there are several sites on the Internet that could possibly save you money through the process of exchanging goods and services in lieu of monetary compensation.

Say you have web design skills but you can’t afford to buy an iPad, well you just may be able to exchange your skills for that popular mobile device. Or maybe you have a Canon camera but you’re looking to trade it for a Nikon of a similar model. Bartering websites are similar to eBay in which ads are posted for items and services of exchange. Barterers contact one another and make an offer for those exchanges. Though there is some risk involved, it’s best to start bartering on a local level where you can meet the person you’re making the exchange with. But as you will see, there are bartering sites set up that can assist in making your exchange with other barterers across the country or even around the world.

Craigslist

As you might expect, Craigslist is not only a free and widely known place to buy and sell goods and services, but you can actually also barter items and services on there as well.

Simply find your local Craigslist homepage and click on “Barter,” listed under the “For Sale” section. Depending on the city or town where you live, you will find a whole host of offers. In my area, barter listings included a “Car for the weekend,” a “A Beautiful Honora Pearl Necklace,” “video services,” and “baseball/softball lessons.”

When you find an item or service you’re interested in, you contact that person and make the seller or buyer an offer. Likewise you can post your own sales. In using Craigslist, depending the what you’re bartering, you might want to set up an insurance payment via PayPal, cash or cashier’s check, that is acceptable to both parties. It’s also a good idea to barter on a local level, if possible.

Swap.com

Swap.com is a very straightforward trading site that focuses on the trading of books, CD’s, movies, and video games. You need to be a Facebook member to register on the site. Once you’re a member, you simply create a “have list” and a “want list” of items. When you’re ready to swap, choose the item you want to trade and an email will automatically be sent to the other trader in the transaction. If the trader(s) accepts, you’ll get an email letting you know the trade is completed and you will then be provided the shipping address where you need to ship your item.

The only cost associated with swapping on Swap.com is shipping costs. Similar to eBay, members of the site are rated by other members about how fast they shipped the item and if the item was what it was described to be.

SwapTreasures

SwapTreasures.com seems to feature almost any item you may want for trade – from antiques, to electronics, to video games. You can follow SwapTreasures on their Facebook and Twitter pages, but you’re pretty much on your own when it comes to setting up a trade.

There are absolutely no sign-up fees or point systems for this site. You send or receive offers, set up the trade, and make the exchange. Each member has a membership page, and positive and negative ratings can be left about members. You can also do a search in your local area for wanted items.

U-Exchange

U-Exchange, an international site for US, UK, and Canadian citizens, is similar to SwapTreasures. There are no membership fees involved. U-Exchange makes its revenue from advertising on the site.

As with other bartering sites, you create or respond to items you want to trade and email contacts about the trade offer. You don’t have to be a member of the site to start making contacts, but the process of contacting registered members of the site is easier if you too are signed up. Listings for this site include items and services, bartering for vacation housing, and vehicle and boat trades.

You can use the site’s Google map and keyword features to search for local listings as well. Many of the listings that I linked to didn’t include photos of items up for trade. Providing a few photos as you would on eBay is one of the best ways to get your listing responded to. U-Exchange is not a very well designed site, but its listings seem pretty wide and varied.

BarterQuest

BarterQuest is the most well designed and active bartering site of the ones listed for review. Categories for trading items and services are varied, including cameras, furniture, sporting goods, video and computer games, and even gift certificates.

While the trading is absolutely free, you must have your account verified, which costs $9. However, this one-time verification fee is waived if you can get three of your friends to sign up on the site as well. You still can search the site before getting verified and begin making a list of the things you have to trade and another list of things you’re looking for.

BarterQuest uses a matching system to match your “have” items and services with your “wants.” The site also has a point system so that if you don’t have something of “equal value” to trade, you can use points as part of your negotiation.

One other great feature about BarterQuest are Clubs, which are focused on particular types of traders, e.g. freelancers, animal lovers, technology gurus, small business owners, book lovers, etc.

Bartering with strangers online may feel a little risky, but depending on what you’re trying to barter, the process could save you some money if you’re on a tight budget.

Let us know what you think of the online bartering system. Have you ever tried it? What were the results?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/coupon-alert-05.jpg" />Shopping online is hardly a new habit for anyone. We have all quickly found how easy and exciting it is to spend money online. But what about saving?

Couponing can be a great and effective way to save a penny or two and there have been quite a few useful money-saving sites shared so far… But who has the time? Tracking coupons online requires a huge time investment which may never pay off: you need to first find reliable and effective coupon sources, then create various tracking and organizing systems, etc.

I have found that nothing works better than a relevant and timely price tracking email alert. Here are a few tools I am using to create one:

New Coupon Alert

There are a variety of coupon directories and aggregators out there. One’s choice is really based on personal preferences and trial and error experiences. The one I am currently using is Rather-be-Shopping which has (luckily) added the coupon alert feature with the latest update.

I like the tool because the coupons listed there seem to be hand-picked and more often than not prove to be reliable. One of the newest and most useful sections added as well is a free shipping one.

To add an email alert, you will need to create a free account, proceed to “Your Coupon Alert Settings” ad check what you want to be alerted of. You can receive alerts (1) by category or (2) by store (or both):

FreeShipping.org’s “Favorite Coupons” feature that I mentioned in another shopping-related post quite a while ago is another option to try here but it only allows you to add price alerts by merchant.

Price Drop Email Alert

Like with coupon aggregating, price tracking sites are quite a few. I’ve been using one of the most established and popular of them: PriceGrabber. To create a price drop alert you will need to use the search feature to locate your product (range), then create an account and use “Add Price Alert” link.

The alert settings will let you specify:

Quality preferences (New, Used, Import, Refurbished, etc);

Merchant range (you can include or exclude any merchants names);

Desired merchant rating:

The actual alert will look like this:

Any Email Price Alerts

Google Alerts which you can have plenty of fun with is another tool we need to mention here. The best thing about the tool is that you can actually create an alert about anything while using the flexibility of Google Advanced operators:

Get new product result within the specified price range: [laptop $500..$1200] – use two dots between the prices

Include several products in one alert: [laptop coupons OR mobile phone coupons]

Control the proximity to include various models: ["nokia * coupons"]

Almost with all those queries, scrolling down to “Web results” in your alert (like in the screenshot above) will give you most useful results.

With as much flexibility, why not use Google Alerts and that’s it? Unfortunately, the tool results are far from being perfect. In my experience, Google Alerts are most useful when applied for some type of research (for example, if you want to get daily updates on what people offer and which products exist based on your query). The tool won’t give you any actionable updates (unlike the two tools above).

Another tip to mention here is that you probably want to create a separate email account for these types of price alerts so that they do not clutter your main inbox.
