Avatars on Xbox Live launched way back in 2008. Since then Microsoft has used them as a lucrative business by selling clothing and accessories for them. Users can log on to the Avatar store and buy stuff, and then their friends will see what they have purchased. You can also unlock items for your Avatar in some games. These awards include some pretty cool stuff, and it’s a way of showing your friends that you accomplished something impressive.

Starting January 1st however, Avatars will be going through a little transition. Games like Gears of War have sold gun-based accessories like their famous Lancer. but on January 1st, Microsoft will no longer be offering such items. Microsoft has no problem with violent games, but the fact that Avatars are available outside of such games is enough to make them nix these items. With the Kinect, Microsoft has started putting out family-friendly games that use Avatars and gamers on these games may not want to meet Avatars toting a giant gun.

That said, gamers who purchased these items already will still be able to use them. At least they aren’t taking away the items that people have already purchased with their hard-earned money. If you want one of these items, make sure to hit the Marketplace and buy them before the New Year, because after that they will be just like 2011….gone!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/CoolAvatar06.png">An avatar is a graphical representation of yourself. In a game it is the character you play. Online, for example in a user profile, it is the picture you upload for that profile. In other words, it is the image other people associate you with when you are participating in online activities.

The obvious thing to do is to use a picture of yourself. However, if you want to be a little more creative, why not make a custom avatar for yourself? Need inspiration? This article has it! Along with examples I will also point out tools that let you create a cool avatar online.

Note that the copyright of some of the avatars shown below belong to the people they were created by. Please do not copy their avatar!

Cool Online Avatar Examples

Facebook Avatar

Are you in need of a new Facebook avatar? David has created some very cool avatars as knockoffs of Facebook’s default avatar. They are definitely inspiring.

Cartoon Avatar

The most popular online cartoon avatar creators are Simpsonize Me and South Park Studio. The following avatar found at Adland.TV was probably created using Face Your Manga.

For more online tools that can help you create a cartoon version of yourself, check the resources at the bottom of this article.

Geographical Avatar

This user over at Live Leaks made a photo of a flag pointing to a spot on a map to indicate where he lives.

Banner Avatar

Your avatar can be a message. The Transformers avatar shown below was inspired by Obama’s Change posters. You can create a similar avatar using ObamiconMe. The site also offers alternative themes, like ‘Free Iran’ or ‘I’m with Coco’.

Logo Avatar

Got a favorite product or service to promote? You could make the logo your avatar like this user over at AFi (Action Figure insider) did.

How To Create Your Own Avatar

There are many sites out there that offer free avatars or tools to easily create a custom one if you’re lacking the skills. Now to be honest I don’t know which tools exactly were used to create the above avatars. However, MakeUseOf has previously featured many ways you can create your own cool avatars online. Read all about it:

How To Show Your Avatar

Now that you have an avatar equally cool as the ones above, how do you show it to the world? Well, if the forum of your choice does not let you upload your avatar, but you can see others using one, they may well be using a service called Gravatar. Gravatar lets you associate a picture file, i.e. your avatar with your email address. What you do is sign up with Gravatar, add the email address/es you use to post on forums, and link your email address/es to your avatar/s.

If this brief walkthrough was too short, you will find screenshots and better explanations in the articles below:

Said to have started with Alexandre Oudin, a French artist, many have followed suit. Any Photoshop fiends will find it easy to put this look together, transforming their Facebook profile into an interesting collage of images.

That said, there are several apps popping up that have taken the hard work out of it. The only difficulty you’ll find yourself faced with is trying to choose the profile picture you’re going to use. From branded Facebook apps that take care of the entire method step by step, to separate webapps that create the images for you to later upload to Facebook, there are a variety of ways that you can recreate the effect on your own profile.

Schweppes App

Schweppes were quick to stick their brand name on a Facebook app that allows you to upload, tag and share your profile photo directly within the social network.

Upload the photo of your choice to the Schweppes app and resize, rotate and move the image until the final layout is to your liking.

From the app, you can then automatically upload the images to Facebook.

This will create a new album, from which you can then set the first image as your profile picture, and tag yourself in the rest of the photos.

PicScatter

PicScatter takes a similar approach to the Schweppes app, allowing you to upload, scale and move the image, but you can’t rotate it.

Once you’ve uploaded and scaled the image, you can then automatically publish it to Facebook, and like the Schweppes app, an album will automatically be created including all of the images.

PicScatter does have a few nice features that the Schweppes app doesn’t. First, if you’d rather not publish directly to Facebook, you can download the photos in a zip folder from PicScatter and upload them to Facebook yourself. If you do publish to Facebook, it will automatically tag the photos for you.

It also makes it easy to remove previous “scatters” if you decide to create a new layout, as well as creating an album with 9 photos, as opposed to Schweppes’ 6 photos; allowing your friends and followers to see more of the original image when you first upload it.

PicScatter doesn’t make it very clear, but it seems that you have to like their Facebook Page in order for the application to prompt you to grant it permission to access your profile.

With both the Schweppes app and PicScatter, if your tagged photos aren’t visible to your friends, rather than tag the photos, simply add each of the photos to your profile photos album, but be sure to get them in the right order. If you opt for using the tag method, you will of course have to manually remove the images from the bar each time your friend tag you in a photo, by clicking the little ‘x’ in the corner of the image.

Default Photo

If you’re looking for something a little less elaborate or low key, or if you don’t want to put your own image up as your profile picture, an interesting option is to jazz up Facebook’s default photo. With almost 70 alternatives to the default image from Darth Vader to Pippy Longstockings – there’s something in there for just about everyone.

There are a few other interesting options when it comes to spicing up your Facebook profile, including turning the image into a video with VanityVid, or using cool special effects on your photos courtesy of these 6 sites or even creating a cartoon avatar.

Have you taken advantage of Facebook’s latest profile layout? Let us know in the comments, and share a screenshot while you’re at it.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/profile.jpg" />There are many creative ways to make a statement in your blog updates, but putting together something that really goes viral isn’t always easy. Sometimes, even the most powerfully written article goes unnoticed, because the Internet is just overridden with folks writing content, and everyone wants to be noticed. So how do you really stand out and get people to do a double-take when they come across your blog?

The key is to come up with something unique, odd or hilarious. If you can develop something that makes people laugh so hard that they end up in stitches, you can be sure that they’ll forward it to all of their friends.

One type of content is to develop funny “video-casts,” which are basically short one or two minute videos that make a big impact and get people laughing. One awesome resource I discovered that can help to post your own videos to your blog is Oddcast Widgets.

Oddcast is a very cool technology that major brands have used to offer customers the ability to create viral videos that incorporate their own face. Saikat touched on this technology earlier when he wrote about Gizmoz. However, Oddcast takes the technology to a whole new level by allowing you to customize really funny videos with your own messages, or by integrating your own face into famous movie scenes, and letting you post your custom movie videos anywhere online.

OddCast Now Offers Customizable Widgets

In addition to the technology they offer major brands to generate their own viral applications, OddCast also offers regular folks the opportunity to generate their own unique viral video that you can post on your blog, post on social networks or simply email to your friends.

The OddCast Widgets page offers a hilarious mix of 19 customizable widgets that you can embed anywhere on the Internet. I have to say, just playing around with these for a little bit, once you upload your first face image and start incorporating it into these videos, you won’t be able to stop. It’s very addictive and extremely funny. If you want to make a real impact or deliver a memorable message in a blog post update – this is definitely the way to do it.

Send Baby Mail Messages To Get Your Point Across

The first widget that I’d like to cover is actually the best, in my opinion. It’s called BabyMail, and if you loved the old viral dancing baby videos, you’ll love this widget. It lets you create your own talking baby message in your own voice, and the baby will deliver your message for you in a video that’ll have your friends rolling on the floor with laughter.

The first step in creating this widget is to choose which baby you want to deliver your message. You can choose between a mix of girl babies or boy babies, or better yet – upload a picture of your own baby! Then, you can type in a message that you’d like the baby to speak, which will result in a digitized voice.

A much better approach is to record the message in your own voice. Hearing your voice coming out of this baby’s mouth is a riot! Then, when you’ve got the video working and sounding the way you want it to, you can share it.

All of these widgets allow you to share them out in three ways – either send it as an email, embed it into a blog or social network, or just get the URL that you can send to friends or post in Twitter.

Avatarize Yourself

Another widget that’s actually fast becoming one of the most popular Oddcasts is the one that McDonald’s created as part of their Avatar promotion. With this widget, you can upload a photo of your face, and then resize it and position it in preparation to become an Avatar.

Just resize your face, and position it so that it is proportioned just about the same as the sample image to the left. Many of these widgets also have you place “position points” on the image of your face so that the application knows where the sides of your face, chin, nose and eyes are.

Once you’re done customizing your image, just click submit. Within seconds – there you are, completely Avatarized!

Your Avatar actually blinks and turns its head. You can change the emotion of your Avatar to happy or angry, change the background, and you can add a text message at the bottom of the image. Then you can share it out to any site, or download an image that you can actually use as your “avatar” on your Internet profiles!

Other Cool Things You Can Do With Oddcast Widgets

The majority of the widgets on the OddCast site are actually real movie scenes where you can incorporate your image as a star of the movie. When you integrate your face (or even better, a friend’s face) into the movie, it makes for some pretty hilarious scenes. For example, here I am in a Terminator scene.

Check out those biceps! And here I am in Office Space, one of my favorite movies, explaining to the company executives how, on any given workday, I only get about 15 minutes of actual work done.

And in the last bit of fun I had for the night, I decided to make a star appearance in the movie Robocop. There’s just something really funny seeing your head mounted on top of this crime-fighting robot.

Other movie scenes that you can star in include Alien (where you become the alien bursting out of the poor guy’s body cavity), the Omen (where you become the evil little boy), City Slickers, Dodgeball and more. Choose any of these widgets, incorporate any face that you like, and you’ve got yourself a memorable clip that your website visitors or social network friends will surely find worthy of forwarding!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/incarnate_logo.png" />These days, whether it’s on Facebook, Twitter, or even MySpace, almost anyone who spends time online has an avatar someplace. Some people like a picture of themselves and others prefer a cartoon or a simple icon. Either way, their avatar shares something about themselves.

As a blogger you are probably trying to build some sort of community on your site. In doing so, you need to be sensitive to how you give your visitors the ability to relate to you and the other users. Allowing them to show an avatar aids in giving them the ability to visually identify themselves within your community.

Automattic had an idea that if they created a “globally recognized avatar”, which they call “Gravatar”, making it easier for both bloggers to allow the avatars and the visitors to “carry” their avatars with them to each blog they comment on, then life would be easier. The idea was a great one and in my opinion it works wonderfully. All people have to do is head over to Gravatar and register (check out this thread on MakeUseOf Answers for a few more details). Oops. Everyone has to opt in for it to work?

Many people are fine with that but there are still many people who just don’t feel like registering at one more site just for a little icon. That’s where Incarnate comes in.

Incarnate attempts to address this issue by making it possible to find your avatar from another social network, saving visitors the trouble of registering and uploading yet another avatar. In fact, visitors can choose which avatar to use from amongst their social networks. The sites that are searched are Twitter, Facebook, Gravatar.com, MySpace, XBox Live and YouTube.

To start out, check out Incarnate’s site and run a test search on the user name or alias that you use across the web.

Cool, eh? Now that we get an idea of how it works, let’s see how it works on a WordPress blog.

In the Admin area of your WordPress blog, add a new plugin. Run a search for WP-Incarnate. It should come up as one of the only listings and it will be called “Incarnate for WordPress.”

Once installed and activated, you should see another field at the top of the regular comment section asking for your name, handle, alias or email.

All your visitor has to do is read the simple directions, type in the information and choose the avatar they want to use.

That’s about how easy it really is. This way your visitors can now find and carry their avatars from the social networks they already use. No need to register at another site and upload another icon. Also, they will be more recognizable because the avatar will be the same as on the other networks.

As a side note, if you are looking to create an avatar for commenting and your social network presences, check out these MakeUseOf articles:

Do you use an avatar when you comment on blogs? Do you prefer the Gravatar way or do you think the Incarnate way would be easier?

You really need an avatar or profile picture in your day-to-day online life. They add a certain personality to your online identity and allows you to distinguish yourself from the rest of the flock.

You need them on Facebook, in your instant messaging application, and you can even use Gravatar to personalize your comments on MakeUseOf, and a ton of other sites.

A lot of people are too shy, or paranoid, to use a ‘real’ profile pictures. It’s understandable. You just don’t want to have your face next to everything you say and do on the internet. That’s why you build your own avatar: a digital caricature to represent the online you.

Below are four highly diverse online services that allow you to build your own highly personalized avatars, ranging from black-and white sketches to animated 3D.

Build Your Wild Self

Build Your Wild Self is that one-in-a-million avatar tool. It draws your kiddy self in rich colors and imaginative features. Inner adults do not exist. You should still find a remnant of the kid in you. The resulting avatars have that grainy pencil-drawn look about them. Talk about character.

Sure, you can use the tool to draw some normal arms and buttocks, but how boring would that be? Rather put in a little octopus, lying, or arachnid. Consider it a conversation starter.

When you’re done, click on ‘Get a Wild Desktop‘ for a big wild-you picture. Crop the image, or just take a screenshot of the part you want to keep. Easy as that!

Avatara (3D Animated)

With Avatar in our wake and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland on the horizon, you’ve got two very good reasons to get excited about 3D. And don’t forget Heavy Rain. While you’re at it, why not build your own 3D avatar? With a bit of tweaking, it’s like looking in a 3D mirror. The only downside of Avatara is the need to sign up to render your avatar.

Once you’re satisfied with your avatar’s appearance, you can choose an animation. Use breathing for a simple mugshot, or have yourself dance around on the screen.

The easiest way of ‘extracting’ the avatar is to mail it to yourself after signing up. This will give you an animated gif of your 3D character. Not a lot of sites still allow for animated avatars, but even in the worst case scenario, you can still use the 3D you as a still.

Digibody’s Caricature Maker

Back to pencilwork, Digibody’s Caricature Maker is for those of you who aren’t looking for the most realistic depiction. Draw yourself in caricature with a few heavily exaggerated facial features. There’s things little more personal than enlarging and making fun with your own characteristics. After all, it’s the quirks and imperfections that make you… well, you.

The tool is sometimes a little slow to respond, and seems to reload the page with every customization, but the result is often hilarious. I give you my word, you’ll have a hard time finding a lot of normal facial features on that page.

Once you’re done, save the image to your desktop in png, gif or jpg, or extract the HTML to embed it on a web page or in a forum.

FaceYourManga

One of the best avatar (I should say, mangatar) creators. Whip up a funny manga-style profile picture in a whip. It’s one of the avatar creation services that’s used a lot with Gravatar.

Where the above caricature makers really focuses on facial features, FaceYourManga takes on your character by exaggerating facial expressions. It’s easy to make a smart-, angry-, energetic-, or happy looking avatar. Throw in some crazy accessories, and you’re all set.

What avatar creator do you prefer? Tell us your personal picks in the comments section below!

Do you use social networks and want to build your own awesome 3D avatar? Maybe you want to send someone a cute cuddly image of yourself (kind of)?

Or maybe you have your own ideas of what you would do with an Avatar…

Well look no further than Avatara which I discovered from the MakeUseOf directory. You can create 3d avatars out of pre-set up templates or create your own from scratch.

To start, visit Avatara’s homepage. You will see this screen:

Click Get Started to umm, get started! That will take you to this screen:

You see that you can build your own Avatar using an uploaded head shot like the Obama one above (just an example, guys). Or roll with one of their awesome avatars. I chose to start with a blank avatar by clicking Start with a blank avatar at the bottom of the screen. That takes you to here:

I clicked on the filter at the top and told it to filter out everything but male characters and then I saw this:

I rolled with Buck and continued. You need to click Select in the window of the icon you are going with to actually load it into your selection. You can also modify the images directly by using the advanced mode. To continue, you click on the next tab at the top of the window. The next step is to choose skin color like so:

Make your selection and move on. I choose Zoe from the white selection to represent my complexion. Then the next step is to select the eyes. The eyes make your face so choose carefully.

I chose the third one down in the second row. My avatar is coming along nicely now! And I continued on to the hair selection which you can see below:

Almost at the end is body type. What kind of body do you want? A fat and flabby body or a sculptured and chiseled hard body? I chose the latter.

Click Select on the body type you want and move on to the clothing. I choose some formal wear and went with a shirt and tie.

I continued on to choose pants (tuxedo pants) and sneakers! Yes, sneakers! We do want our avatars to have some personality, don’t we? So be creative!

And this is how my avatar looks like after I was done designing:

From here, what can we do? We can save the avatar but you will need to sign up for an account first. As you attempt to save the avatar, it will prompt you to create or log into an account.

Then you will name your avatar and it will be saved to your online account. Easy peasy right? Now, what can we do?

Click on Transport and you will get this screen:

Select a message and an animation to go with your avatar and then you can continue and share the avatar with the whole world! I set my dude (that is his name by the way) to dance and say, “What up?”

Then from the next screen you can email, preview or share your new avatar on most of the social networks. It will take a minute or two for him (or her) to render.

That’s it! We want to see your avatars in the comments! Share your creations with us!

The character that welcomed me on the homepage of Gizmoz hardly looked handsome. It was more of a cartoon Hulk in his pre-teens. Is that how I will turn out when I put my face through the Gizmoz web app? I wouldn’t mind the muscles, though the face preferably should be my own.

Well, that’s what Gizmoz is. A Web 2.0 3d character maker that lets us create, customize and animate lifelike 3D talking characters and share it on sites like YouTube and Facebook. Yes, your very own talking, blabbering avatar.

The animated online clones are a new “˜breed’ of character-based visual icons. Digital characters that will take over from humdrum photos and dumb avatars. What Gizmoz does is provide a free web service that makes it dead easy to create dead ringers for our online selves. These are embeddable Flash objects with the look of a 3D caricature. It’s a huge lot of fun when you make these characters lip-synch with your own lines on social networking sites or just send it across like a 3D postcard.

There are three ways you can use the Gizmoz 3d character maker to make your own virtual showcase. But first, go through the simple registration and log-in.

Publish 3D Clips

Large repertory of templates to put your face on and publish them or embed them as Flash objects. The templates give you a gallery of choices to make slideshows, 3D greeting cards, animated mini-clips, vacation postcards, commentary clips for any video where you are the speaking critic, 3D avatars, and a new beta product where you get to swap faces with a celebrity.

Print Customized Products

You might not be asked to star in the next Indiana Jones film but you can put your face under his hat with a face swap. That’s the general idea in this section (which is basically the beta face swap option from the earlier section) leading up to the stage where you get to print it on mugs and tees. But the printing isn’t free though it may sound cool. If you don’t want to part with your pennies, share the finished file on your social networks or simply download it to your computer.

Create Cool Profile Pics

We are back to free with this part of the Gizmoz service. Create your own character using provided faces or your own snapped with a webcam or uploaded. You can customize your character by changing the hair, giving it some makeup, accessorizing it or just morphing it into something bizarre. The finished character is yours to download, print or share on social networks like Facebook.

Enter the Gizmoz Studio

The process behind all three options takes you into the Gizmoz Studio interface where you mashup your face on the templates provided, add bells “˜n whistles like graphics, media clips and voice bits to make the animations talk. Gizmoz gives you many tools to do the job. What’s needed is only the face.

Making the character talk is also easy using your own recorded voice or taking the help of the site’s text to speech engine. The steps to follow for each process are clearly outlined.

The Gizmoz site is designed around one concept ““ that it should be easy to make your own animated 3D avatars and share it across the web. Making animated reincarnations of your own self is fun, what’s better is finding out the ways to entertain your friends through it.

I will leave you here now and go make one Clint styled avatar for myself. Always wanted to spout the lines – “Go ahead, make my day!”

Will Gizmoz make yours? Discover it and let us know.

We could sit around all day and debate about which of the popular social networks is the best, but for visually-customizable profiles, MySpace is tops. So much can be done with your profile.

Have you ever asked yourself, “How do I make a background on MySpace?” Well, today I’ll show you how to find, create, and use a custom background on your MySpace profile.

Your source image could be from your personal photo collection or some wallpaper made available for free download from a site like Customize.org, one of my favorite sites, Digital Blasphemy, or Google’s Image Search (we suggest using the Advanced Search to narrow it down to non-commercial-licensed content).

When selecting your image, keep your audience in mind. Does the image provide a pleasing pattern or illustrate a great moment? Will it distract from your profile’s content? Is it age-appropriate, considering your friends? These are all things to consider, as well as image size. If your image is larger than, say 1024 pixels in length, we suggest using a tool like Resizr or any image resizer to shrink the image down.

Rather than linking to the image as hosted elsewhere, it’s good etiquette to save a copy of the image and upload it to a free host such as PiccDrop, and also to give credit somewhere on your profile to the artist or photographer. For demonstration, I’ve chosen this photo by Tim Snell. Once you’ve uploaded your image to your host, make note of the image’s URL (copy it into Notepad) for future use.

Your next step varies based on what type of MySpace profile you’re using. There are two versions of your MySpace profile. If you’re a long-time user and haven’t switched, then you’re using Profile 1.0. Here’s how to determine what type of profile you’re using. When you login, click the “Edit Profile” link next to your MySpace URL. Then, select “Customize Profile.” On the next screen, your profile type will be displayed at the very top of the page.

If you’re using “Profile 1.0“, follow these directions: Hit your “back” button to go back to the original profile editor. Use this background generator with your image’s URL to create the HTML code, then copy that code into the profile editor’s “About Me” box. Save your changes and check your profile.

If you’ve upgraded your profile to “2.0“, the process is easier. First, select your basic theme. If you have a dark image like mine, for example, it’s important to pick a dark theme to start with. In your customize menu, click Advanced Edit, then Background, and then paste your image’s URL into the URL field. Publish your changes and check your profile.

If everything worked, you’ll have a custom background for your MySpace page to show off to your friends (my profile is here). Feel free to share in the comments about any profile-customization tips you may have. There’s more MySpacey goodness on MUO here.

gifninja is a website that lets you create animated gifs quickly and easily. You can either create an animated gif from individual images or by uploading a video. gifninja also provides you with a nice utility to split an animated gif into separate images.

Convert video to animated gif

To convert a video to an animated gif, you first need to make sure that you make the video as short as possible. You can do this with one of many online video editing tools or with Windows Movie Maker (if you are on Windows of course). According to gifninja, the video file has to be about 4 seconds long, so you should try to shorten it to about that length.

Once you’ve edited your movie and cut it down to size, visit the page to convert your video to gif. Click the Browse button, navigate to where your video file is, and select it. If you wish, you can make your picture available to the public and available to be rated. Then just click on make my gif!

Make animated gifs from images

If you have a series of images you wish to animate, you can make an animated gif from images. You can upload the files individually (up to five) or you can zip them up and upload them in a single file. If you choose to upload them as a zip, you will have to append numbers to the filenames in the sequence of the animation (car1.jpg, car2.jpg, car3.jpg, etc”¦).

Selecting the file(s) to upload is very much the same as uploading a video. However, there is an additional option to set the speed of the animation. There is a preview of an animated dog that demonstrates the selected speed. But don’t worry, if you’re not happy with the speed of the animation after you’ve uploaded it, you can adjust it later.

After you click the make my gif! button, you are taken to a preview page. The preview page allows you to keep the image as it is, adjust the speed, or start all over again. Once you have the animation set to the desired speed, click Yes ““ it’s fantastic! to proceed to the next step.

After you’ve selected the desired speed for your animation, you select the filename for your animated gif. Again, you can make the image publicly available if you wish. You can also enter the filename for the image as well as tags to help other people find your image. Once you have everything set the way you want, click the Save gif button.

gifninja also has a cool feature to split animated images into separate images. Just upload the file and click the split my gif! button. The individual images will appear right on the page. You can also download all the images at once with a zip file generated by gifninja.

gifninja could hardly make it easier to create animated gifs online. What other free online and offline tools do you use to create animated gifs?
