Here’s a radical opinion - you should be able to run any apps you like on the devices you own. Apple doesn’t agree, and it’s twisted itself into pretzels creating arbitrary rules for what app developers – and you – can do with your device. These guidelines – although Apple reserves the right to change them at any time – are actually an improvement over the past situation.

I personally cannot fathom the mindset of people who queue for the latest gadget on launch day. I've tried, I really have, but I think it's a bizarre choice to queue up for hours or even days, through all weathers, purely in order to purchase a next-gen device in person. There is absolutely no need to ever queue for a new gadget on day one as, the Internet means queuing is unnecessary.

There's no question about it: Apple's had an amazing decade. It's hard to recall, but it's only been ten years since Apple was just starting to sell a lame MP3 player with no wireless and less space than a nomad and only five years since mainstream tech writers predicted the failure of the iPhone. Today hardly anyone in the press doubts Apple. They're the largest company on earth by stock value.

I don't have any love for Apple. I don't have any hate either. In fact, I find it odd that anyone would express such strong emotions, whether positive or negative, for a technology company. Or any company for that matter, whatever business it happens to be in. This means that while I don't hate Apple, I can't abide Apple fanboys. Thankfully I'm not alone.

Last Thursday, Apple held a live event at the Guggenheim in New York, where the company introduced its latest software, iBooks Author, which some critics are calling a game changer for schools, writers, and book publishers. iBooks Author is designed to enable writers and publishers to create multimedia e-textbooks that can be uploaded and sold on the Apple's iBooks store and viewed in the updated iBooks 2 app.

Apple has created a stir with their new cloud based music service known as iTunes Match. For iPhone owners, the prospect of taking all their music to the Cloud and having it matched with a high quality version direct from Apple's servers was a winning proposition. The program finally launched, but upon launch it was not available in all the countries people wanted to use it. Now, Apple is working to rectify that situation by launching the service in 19 new countries.

As Apple’s popularity grows, the company has been continuing to expand its retail presence across the globe. Usually this is accomplished by opening new stand-alone Apple stores. But while the company may take a walled-garden approach to their products, they’re sometimes a bit more open about running the business. May 6th will see the opening of the first Apple mini-store inside a Target.
