YouTube has the numbers. There’s no doubting that it is the most popular streaming video site today. It is the Mecca where content creators are rushing to in large numbers. Some of the content creators have been big names like MTV, ESPN and CNN. Last year’s surge has led to some astounding figures which YouTube has touted in its blog. For instance, YouTube says that its top 25 original channels are now averaging over a million views every week.

Just like last year’s initiative which led to creation of original content and many channels, YouTube again promises a fresh wave. But this time, it is Europe. YouTube made the announcement that it is launching original programming from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and of course from the U.S. too.

From local cuisine, health and wellness and parenting to sports, music, comedy, animation and news, this new lineup of original channels will have something for everyone. They are backed by some of the biggest producers, well-known celebrities and emerging media companies from Europe and the U.S.

The Washington Post also mentions in a report that some of those original channels – at least 60 of them – could come from Britain’s BBC, London-based FreemantleMedia and the Netherlands’ Endemol. With its enlarged footprint across the Atlantic, YouTube is moving into territories marked out by traditional media companies. For the viewer it means more choice of mainstream and niche content. You can take a sneak peak at the coming attractions on the YouTube Original Channels page.
