    The best multiplayer games to play are games that support a local area network. The internet could die, but we'd still be pwning in in our no-steam version of Borderlands 2.

    Wow I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one. Team Fortress 2. It is a free to play online shooter, which has 9 unique classes. The game is wickedly fun in my opinion. The community is awesome. There are too many reasons to play it. It's a must play

    World of Tanks, of course, because:
    * free to play --- paying does not make you a better player;
    * if you win, you had a fun game destroying stuff;
    * if you loose, you can blame others;
    * has tech research tree;
    * often added game content;
    * spontaneous, rewarding teamwork with complete strangers;
    * not too massive multiplayer to get confusing (like WoW);
    * not too individual multiplayer to get personal (like StarCraft 2);
    * fast enough game play to not get bored;
    * slow enough game play to not get overburdened;
    * not too click intensive to hurt the hands;
    * a game is played in less than 15 minutes;
    * also: has tanks.

    I really don't like online gaming. Games with voice communication are the worst, since you can pretty much always find some poorly supervised, foul mouthed prepubescent or the dickhead who leaves his mic open while he mouth-breathes and munches on cheetos... and in games that build voice communication in, the attitude of the player base is that everyone HAS to use it. Ugh.

    Putting THAT pet peeve aside, you still have to deal with griefers, trolls, unresponsive players, other people's crummy network connections, parents trying to game and watch their children and entitled jerks immediately assume they should be in charge.

    Pretending for a moment that none of that is sufficiently off-putting, you THEN have to deal with the annoyance of game company politics surrounding DRM, server availability and client access and, at least for games where players can't host their own server, the very real possibility that your game of choice can be yanked away the moment an executive decides to stop paying to host it.

    Online gaming is a bad deal almost all the way around.

    Battlefield 3

    Large scale battles. Team work and cooperation. Can't get rusty. All your friends can play together. Play as long as you like. Tons of different game modes. Has everything good in Call of Duty has and more. Can dominate with little time spent. Can I get a hooah for jets, helicoptors, and tanks? Let's be real guys.

    Let's be real, for the casual need-to-watch-my-mortal-enemies-bathe-in-napalm-to-get-my-fix type of gamer, call of duty takes the cake, tassels and all. It isn't a game that you need to put in a metric ton of time to keep up with or to be good enough at to have a quality time. The single player story is second to none and the online game play excels at everything an FPS should. Still not convinced? Well who would you rather be; (Something lame)burn.. or Captain Price.

    • Dave P
      October 21, 2013 at 2:27 pm

      I'm not sure I'd agree that the single player story mode is second to none in CoD games. It sometimes feels like it's just there as a warm-up for the online multiplayer. Online though, CoD is pretty damn good.

    • The Tree Pirate
      October 21, 2013 at 5:41 pm

      Wait, really? I wouldn't argue if you thought another FPS had a better story (personally I just love the CoD stories) but a warm up for the online play? It just surprises me that someone would be of that opinion. In fact, I play the story more often than I do online.

    GTA V yeah!! it is the best online game!!..........(hit the brake, burnout wheels and stop!! ) Waitaminuttte, what about Fifa Soccer? ya it is the best one!! ....oh....oh no! no! COD is the best of all!! Wait....wait....wait hommie, all the games that i "love" and "play" online are the best. Eventually, it is all about the games we love and willing to play online.
    Allow me to say this:

    GTA V :
    .....great game but i finished it in one week, ya you read that right. I did not finish GTA IV till today. Rockwell made GTA V to be the new experience of online gaming and it izzzz. Here is the thing, you are online but really you are not "online" till you chose to play with other players online. Confused? let me explain. When you are online , you will use your avatar where you will not be able to do so if you are offline. Your avatar ,named after you (in my case) ,will be given "new " missions to perform without being disturbed by the online folks. If you chose to join the world, just ask for it and you are there. Think of Inception the movie but in this case replace the "dream" with "online". It means that I finished GTA V as long as it is concerned about Micheal, Frankiln and Trever and not my Avatar. Very smart move from Rockwell politely telling us to migrate to online world for good.

    Fifa soccer:
    ......my all time game!! i can play this game online endlessly. My son and I have a Fifa soccer tournament at home; he beats me and I beat him. We both have our own strategies but over time it becomes boring when both know each others moves. He is not allowed to go online but i can ( Daddy power!! :) ) The online world is amazing, you will meet people with different skills and strategies. You learn from them and they learn from you and in the process the game suddenly becomes interesting. The cool thing is Fifa soccer will set you up with online people with the same or close to skills to play with. That is pretty neat, otherwise you will be bored to play with people who are less experienced than you are , and you will be mad like hell if you meet the experts. It is a game but i want to win too bro! :)

    COD:
    ......ahhh, shall I say something about this or just pass it because it is understood. I call it an anger management game. Come from work mad and let the kids add to that once you come home. Hold it till they hit the sack then head to COD. Take your anger out there like there is no tomorrow. Hey Kevin Spacey did it on House of Cards, why shouldn't I? :) COD is a vast online world and it is not so cool if you go there alone. You might have a poker night but my buddies and I have an online COD night. We would gang on people that we never met in real life and we will never meet and the show begins!

    Once upon a time long before internet was everywhere like today ,there was a cool LAN game called Counter Strike , i bet most of you are staying now aaahh now :) You would sit at an internet cafe, get a computer, wait till as many people as possible come in to play the game and then start the fun. Please note to the phrase " wait till as many people as possible come in to play". In online gaming , you do not " wait" for others to come in, they are already there. The cool thing about online gaming is that you are at home and you are not paying $3/hr to use a computer to play the game. It was possible to play Counter Strike online but it was kinda difficult to find the best server and not all of us could afford internet at home in those weired university days! The truth must be told, there is no shooting game till today that is as cool and amazing like Counter Strike, period!!

    In conclusion : There is no such things as "the best" game online. It is all about the games that we love to play endlessly. I gave my opinion about the games i love but it doesn't mean they are the best games for all, but for me they are.

    Sorry Dave and folks if my answer was too long , but it was fun to write it :)

      We like long comments, so don't you worry.

      Rockstar pitched GTA V just right IMO. The story mode has a brilliant learning curve that keeps you playing right until the end. And then, as you say, the online mode is there to continue the fun.

      I never quite got into playing FIFA online, but maybe it's improved since the last time I tried a few years ago. Matching you with players of a similar skill is a masterstroke.

      I remember Counter Strike fondly, and nostalgia means it's an experience that is hard to beat.

    With so many choices out there the ultimatum depends on the genre of the game I pick, is it entirely free or free to play basic levels and pay for full features. Have been playing 'PlanetSide 2' for a long time as I stick to FPS. Gave 'League of Legends' a try but gave up as the MMO is really massive and I need to dedicate lot of time.
    My best
    PC: PlanetSide 2
    PS3: Battlefield 3

      It's interesting that the only reason you don't play League Of Legends is because the game is too big! No wonder it's so popular with others.
