The many icons and symbols used across Facebook Messenger can be pretty confusing. So, what do they all mean?

We've researched the most common icons and symbols on Facebook Messenger to find out what purpose they serve. Here's everything you need to know.

1. Open Blue Circle

The open blue circle Facebook Messenger icon means that your message is currently being sent.

If you navigate away from the message or lose network connectivity while the open blue circle is present, Facebook still sends the message once the connection is restored.

The open blue circle with a checkmark means that your message has been delivered.

At this point, the recipient will see your message as soon as they open the Messenger app. But if they're not online, they may not be able to see it yet.

4. Red Triangle + Exclamation

A red triangle with an exclamation point should only appear if your message isn't sent due to an internet connection outage. It is arguably the least common Messenger symbol.

A message should appear alongside the red triangle that says: "This message didn't send. Check your internet connection and click to try again." Avoid navigating away from the page until you fix your unstable internet connection, or save a copy of your message offline to ensure your information is not lost.

5. Green Dot

A green dot in the lower right corner of your contacts' pictures at the top indicates that they're online and available to chat.

If you send a message to someone with a green dot next to their display picture, they're more likely to receive, read, and reply to your chat.

However, you can also change which Facebook friends can see you online, which hides the activity status green dot from certain users.

6. Blue Dot

A blue dot to the right of a chat indicates an unread message. The sender won't get a message read confirmation until you click the chat.

Opening a chat with a blue dot removes the dot and shows the sender that you've opened and read their message. This feature is also handy for quickly sorting and identifying messages you don't want to read.

7. A Gray Crossed-Out Bell
