A lot of the time it feels like Facebook enjoys making tiny, unexplained changes to their messaging interface just to see how users react.

Much like the tips and tricks that make Facebook itself work a little more smoothly, understanding the symbols and actions of the Messenger app can help you communicate with far less frustration!

I did the research about what the most common Facebook Messenger circles mean and what purpose they serve, and also looked into a couple other common Facebook Messenger questions about security, location sharing, and “read” notifications.

What Does the Open Blue Circle Mean on Facebook Messenger?

OpenBlueThe open blue circle means that your message is currently sending.

It’s best if you don’t navigate away from the message while the open blue circle is present as you may risk losing your message if you exit before it is fully sent.

What Does the Open Blue Circle with a Check Mark Mean on Facebook Messenger?

OpenCheckThe open blue circle with a check mark means that your message has been sent.

At this point, you should be able to navigate away from the message without any worries, but the person you are sending the message to may not be able to see it yet.

What Does the Filled Blue Circle with a Check Mark Mean on Facebook Messenger?

FillBlueA filled blue circle with a check mark means that your message has been delivered.

While the person may not have seen your message yet, you can be confident that it is available to them whenever they next check their phone, tablet, or computer!

What Does a Red Triangle with an Exclamation Point Mean on Facebook Messenger?

NotSentA red triangle with an exclamation point should only appear if your message is not sent due to an Internet connection outage.

A message should appear alongside the red triangle that says “This message didn’t send. Check your internet connection and click to try again.” Avoid navigating away from the page until your Internet connection is working, or save a copy of your message offline to ensure your information is not lost.

How Do I Know if Someone Has Seen my Facebook Message?

MessageSeen

If someone has seen your Facebook message on the Messenger app, a small, circular version of their profile picture should appear underneath the last message they read.

From Facebook itself the message should display “seen” under a message that has been read, and the exact time a message has been seen under the most recent message sent.

How Do I Keep People From Knowing That I’ve Read a Message?

Facebook recently introduced a feature that allows you to mark messages as unread, which has led many people to think that they can read a message without the sender knowing it has been read. Unfortunately, Facebook’s “mark as unread” setting is actually just an Inbox sorting tool and won’t actually retract your read receipt.

At this point, aside from using 3rd party add-ons on browsers, the only way to avoid someone knowing you’ve seen their message is to not actually read it.

How Do I Turn My Location On and Off in Messenger?

It is possible to show or hide which location Mischief Managed: The Facebook Privacy Nightmare Caused By One Chrome Extension Mischief Managed: The Facebook Privacy Nightmare Caused By One Chrome Extension For a short while, a Chrome extension called the Marauder's Map was letting Facebook users track their friends' exact locations. What Is a Message Request?

A message request is a notification that you receive if someone you are not friends with sends you a message on Facebook.

This is an update from a previous version of Facebook Messenger where messages from non-friends would be sorted into the “Other” folder in your Messenger inbox.

How Do I Delete Facebook Messages?

DeleteConversation

There are four different ways to hide or delete messages on Facebook:

    1. Archiving a conversation will move it out of your Inbox and into the “Archived” folder. This action is reversible.
    2. Deleting a conversation will delete every message ever sent from your inbox, but not from the other person’s inbox. This is non-reversible.
    3. Deleting Messages will allow you to select specific messages to permanently delete from your inbox, but not from the other person’s inbox.
    4. Blocking Messages will prevent another person in the conversation from sending you any further messages. This action is reversible.

What Can I Add to My Facebook Messages?

RidiculousRepartees-565x500

Facebook has added a ton of features that allow you to make your Messenger conversations dynamic and interactive. There are a ton of Messenger add-on apps (pictured here: Ditty and Sound Clips) that enable you to do anything from singing your friends a song to adding stickers to your selfies.

If you don’t want to download external apps, Facebook Messenger has GIFs, Stickers, and Voice recording that can help you dazzle your message’s recipients.

Hi, I'm sorry for the delay in responding, I've tried deleting and reinstalling Messenger several times, and I always get push notifications from Messenger for messages from my Facebook friends, but I usually don't get push notifications from Messenger for messsge requests when I get a message from people who aren't my Facebook friend. I talked to other people about this, and they have the same problem, and they think it's a glitch, so I'm not going to worry about it anymore.

Hi Brenda, I'm so very sorry to hear about your son. It's beautiful that you are still finding ways to speak from your heart. As long as no one has his password (and you are certain of this) it is highly, highly unlikely that anyone will be able to read the messages other than you.

Can this person talk to me while talking to someone else ??

    • Briallyn Smith

A friends droid broke but he has flip phone & uses FB messenger to converse, would the circle be empty on messenger as opposed to blue ? He just off-line or is he blocking me when the circle is empty no blue. Then when he messages me on flip phone it becomes blue again am I being blocked? Thank you

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:42 pm

Hi Cindy – if you're blocked you'll receive a message that says "this person is not receiving messages from you right now" – I wouldn't worry about the circle situation for this one – it's likely it's just a glitch because he's using a flip phone!

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:41 pm

Hi Edith – once you've sent a picture in Messenger there's no way to remove it from the message completely. However, if you want to delete it from being seen on your phone, you can tap and hold on the image and then press "delete" when the option appears

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:40 pm

Hi Kyrah – I believe that that has to do with whether or not the person is available for a video chat/has messenger/doesn't have messenger :)

I am used to message a friend of mine on face book messenger even when that freind is not actually added to my friends list on face book ,some times next the profile sign there appears the grey f signal sometimes it's the blue lightening one ,what would the difference be since that the messages are deliverd and commented on both situations?..
    With my regards..

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:35 pm

Hi Hide – it's possible your friend occasionally logs out of or deletes their Messenger app  – this will make the lightning symbol into he grey f (to show that they're primarily accessing their messages through the Facebook website)

I've been chatting with a friend on messenger for months, yesterday when I sent a message I didn't get a response and noticed his picture had a grey circle with a f in it, while everyone elses had a blue circle with a lightning stumble in it. Why would his picture with the circle change from blue to grey overnight?

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:34 pm

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:28 pm

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:17 pm

Hi John – I believe when the icon is lit it's because the other person is active on Messenger as well - letting you know that they're theoretically available to talk right away :)

    • Briallyn Smith
      October 12, 2016 at 7:14 pm

Hi Carol - are you talking about a message or a post? Your message shouldn't be able to be shared like that, but anything you post on Facebook that allows shares (generally if your post's privacy to "public") can be shared to your friends' timelines as well.

      October 12, 2016 at 7:12 pm

    • Briallyn Smith
      October 12, 2016 at 7:08 pm

Hi Tammy – I wish I did for sure – my best guess is that the "seen" shows up if you're actively on the message at the same time (and so you see when they've read the message) whereas the time stamp appears if you aren't actively looking at the message when they see it.

Hi, I have Facebook Messenger on my iPhone 5s, and I used to get push notifications from Messenger for both messages from friends and for new message requests when people who aren't my Facebook friends messaged me. However, back in May, I suddenly stopped getting any push notifications from Messenger for all new message requests. I'm talking about the normal message requests in Messenger, not the filtered message requests. Did Facebook disable push notifications from Messenger for new message requests?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:39 pm

Hi Brian - I received a push notification from Messenger about a non-friend message request last week, so I don't think it's an across-the-board disabling of that feature - it is strange that that's happened though! Have you received many message requests since then? Are the notifications still showing up on your browser?

      • Brian
        October 7, 2016 at 3:24 pm

Hi, I've gotten a few message requests since then, but no push notifications on my phone from Messenger for any of those message requests. I also don't get notifications on the Web version of Facebook for message requests anymore. When you say you got a push notification recently from Messenger for a message request, do you mean that you got a notification on your phone itself?

Because the recipient either made it "marked as unread" or deleted the conversation thread.

      September 11, 2016 at 5:37 pm

Hi Laurie - the other user changing their message to "unread" shouldn't affect your circle (just their inbox). However, Messenger is notoriously super glitchy with this, so unfortunately I would just chalk it up to being a glitch

If I send a message to someone who is not my friend but I have many mutual friends with, it's still likely that it will go to the other folder. If my message is in the other folder, what is the "highest" icon I'll see until it's accepted? Sent? Delivered?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:36 pm

Hi Yellow - if you send a message to this person it is most likely that they will receive a notification telling them that they've received a message request (and they then choose whether they are going to accept it or not). The "highest" icon you're likely to see is either delivered -although many other users in the comment sections have had frustrating experiences with this system.

    August 14, 2016 at 10:19 pm

If you send a message and on you side you see the grey circle with the grey check, but on the conversation you see the blue circle with the blue check does that mean it was sent to the server, but not delivered yet. Could it be because the person you are sending it to has a bad wifi signal, or have they blocked you?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:34 pm

Hi Elizabeth - if you've been blocked by someone, you'll actually get a message telling you that they "aren't receiving messages from you right now" - so don't worry, it's not that :) It is possible that they don't have a good signal right now for sure, or that their phone isn't on, or any other number of things :)

    August 10, 2016 at 11:42 pm

I've had one message that I sent to someone who I am not connected to and over the last almost 3 weeks it has gone through all the message statuses. When it was first sent it had the white circle with the blue check and said "Sent" then it had the persons profile picture and said "Seen" for a few days and then it went back to the white circle with the blue check and saying it was "Sent" and now suddenly it has the blue circle with the white check and says "Delivered". I also never got any kind of notification saying that they accepted the message request. So I'm not really sure what's going on. I do know that they have seen it though, I just don't know if they marked it as unread (or if that affects how the message looks on my end) or if all of this is some kind of glitch with facebook.

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:34 pm

Hi Lauren - I think the safest thing to assume is that they didn't accept your message request but likely did read the message. Facebook has had a number of glitches with this system (this comment section is full of them!) and it's really unfortunate - it makes it so confusing!

I'm curious why my messages are only showing as sent and not delivered to someone who i actively online. If they are online and connected to messenger shouldn't my message be showing as delivered as well?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:32 pm

Hi Alex- that's strange! It's possible that there's a glitch with the system in this case - I wish I could give a more specific answer, but it's hard to know when I'm not watching it happen!

      • Eddie
        October 3, 2016 at 12:52 pm

I have the same with one of my contacts. When i send a message, the sign is blue tick in blue circle even when they are showing as active, but only goes to delivered, solid blue circle when they actually open my message in their message app. Shouldn't it be showing delivered like it does with my other contacts before they actually open my message.

I sent a message to someone i am not connected to. Their small profile displayed so presumably they opened it or marked it as read. They have not replied and I have not sent another message. However, the message now shows the open blue circle with the blue tick. Any idea what has happened to cause this?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:30 pm

Hi Martin - Facebook recently changed the way you message people you aren't friends with on Facebook so that they have to "accept" a message request before corresponding with you. It's possible that they did read it, but didn't actively "accept" the request, causing Facebook to do this weird glitch.

  50. Rob
    July 31, 2016 at 11:27 pm

I have a Facebook friend who is also on my Messenger. Whenever that person posts on Facebook I get the post on my Messenger too. How do I stop that? All my Messenger contacts have a blue circle next to their name with a white swirl in the circle. The person whose Facebook posts I get on Messenger does not have that blue circle next to their name. Next to their name is a white circle with a gray f inside. That is my only contact that has that.

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:29 pm

Hi Rob - you're getting message notifications of everything they post to their profile? That's strange! • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:28 pm

Hi Bonnie - sometimes Facebook glitches, especially when someone isn't your Facebook friend. If they choose to respond then you'll likely receive a notification telling you that they've "accepted your message request"

How do you know when a conversation is complete? Is the bubble at the bottom of the conversation? Or throughout the conversation?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:27 pm

Hi JustCurious - do you mean how do you know that the entire message has been read? In that case, yes - when the other person's profile picture is at the bottom of all the messages or there is a seen sign following your most recent message, then they have seen it all!

  53. Krystal

I've sent someone who has mutual friends but is not my friend a message. No circles popped up as they usually do but when I checked the details of message a few days later it said seen but not when. Did they actually see my message or is this another weird fb thing

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:26 pm

Hi Krystal - I know this is late, but hopefully it can help someone else if you're long past this problem :) I think you should receive a notification saying that they've "Accepted your message request" (since you aren't friends with them) if they choose to respond/if they are planning on responding. If not, it's hard to tell whether or not they've actually seen it (like you said, Facebook is just ridiculous sometimes)

Hi there, just wondering, if you send a non-friend a message and they choose to ignore it the symbol will stay as sent and you'll never know any different, correct? If you send them another message after they ignore the first do they get a second message request notification or is it automatically ignored or not sent since they ignored the first request?

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 10:00 pm

    • Briallyn Smith

What constitutes a message as having been 'seen'?.......opening Messenger when there is an awaiting message?.....does the receiver have to place their cursor in the reply box to mark it as seen? .....do they have to touch the message to show it was seen?

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 10:02 pm

Hi Ray - for a message to be considered "seen" the person has to actively open up that conversation and see the message. (If you're on desktop, then you have to either open the chat full screen or click on the chat box)

      • Jackie Freian
        August 3, 2016 at 6:15 am

So on both devices (cell, desktop) The message shows a white circle with a blue check. On the desktop when I'm in messages and open it up it shows 'seen 00:00" (The same time I sent the message. What does that mean?

    June 28, 2016 at 5:52 pm

When a msg is seen then that is indicated by a small profile pic circle, bt sometimes it only shows "seen" when we click the sent msg, bt neither the time is shown, nor that small pic, why could it be so?

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 10:03 pm

Hi Maria - to be honest, I'm not entirely sure! I think the picture is more common in group chats or on Messenger and the "seen" is when you're having a conversation with only one person

  62. Andy
    June 27, 2016 at 4:24 am

There is a person I talk to on my phone through messenger and they use a web browser(no messenger app). Even when I know they have our conversation open, my messages always appear with the "sent" icon. It's not until they start typing that the icon changes to their fb profile picture. Rarely do I see the "delivered" icon. What does it mean if it goes straight from sent to their profile picture? I am wondering if this person can only see my messages when they have our conversation open.

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 10:03 pm

Hi Andy - if it goes straight from sent to their profile picture it means that they are online and see the message as soon as it arrives. If it stays at "sent" until they start typing they may have the chat window open but not have clicked on it until they begin typing their response.

I used messenger to send a message to someone who is not a 'friend' and doesn't use messenger. They haven't replied. I guess it went to message requests for them. When i tap and hold on the message in messenger and then select 'details' - 'seen' and nothing else appears under the message. Does that mean they have actually seen it and just haven't replied?

Hi Martin - To be honest, I'm not sure whether or not that means the person has read it – I mean, it might be worth accepting it at face value, but I'm not 100% sure - there have been a few too many glitches in this comments for me to make a sure statement!

Hi Ledu, I think they might just be guessing - there's no way for them to know through Facebook whether or not your phone is on! (They may be watching your "last active" time on Messenger to make a guess)

Do you think I was ignored?

Hi Briallyn. I sent a message to a non-friend and it displayed the 'sent' icon for at least 10 days. I checked again after another 10 days and his profile picture was now showing at the bottom of the message (on app not on desktop). I tapped to try to see the date read and the icon reverted to 'sent' in front of my eyes. Has remained this way and no reply.
I thought that if he accepted the message request I would be informed and if he ignored it I would see no changes at all. So please could you tell me what you think happened here? Thanks.

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 24, 2016 at 10:27 am

Hi Carrie – that's a strange glitch! I think because you didn't receive a notification about him accepting your message request that it's safest to assume he has read the message but hasn't accepted it – let me know if there have been any updates since then, though!

    • Briallyn Smith

Hi Aneice – if you are blocked from contacting someone through messenger you will receive a message that says "So and so is not currently receiving messages from you at this time" (or something along those lines) – as long as you and your ex are both still Facebook friends, even if it's saying "sent" only, he should be receiving the messages.

Hi Shchiara - I'm sorry that Facebook's being so confusing! I think it sounds like this person hasn't seen your message, but the system can definitely glitch sometimes. If you have another way of getting ahold of that person it might be worth trying that method!

Hi Lilly - Unfortunately, Facebook doesn't send you a notification if your message is ignored – it will just stay as sent forever. If your message gets accepted you should see the circle turn to delivered and/or seen, and you will also receive a notification that they have accepted your message request. Hope that helps! :)

I have a friend who I send messages to and its been working well. Recently I don't get any circle at all to show he's received the message or that it is even sending and its always telling me to invite him even though we are friends on FB. He cant fix it, I cant fix it we have no idea what is going on. He doesn't get the messages as I have sent them and it shows he is not connected to messenger even though he is. We just cannot work this one out at all. I send a message its on the screen and literally nothing next to it and he gets nothing.

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 20, 2016 at 4:04 pm

Hi Stoula - that's incredibly strange! Are you using the Messenger app or Facebook itself? Have you both tried uninstalling and reinstalling your apps, restarting your devices, and/or restarting your connections? If none of those work, I'd definitely suggest reaching out to Messenger support - this sounds really out of the ordinary!

  82. Mark
    April 12, 2016 at 3:19 am

I know there are 3 symbols for the status of the messages u send on messenger in the shape of a round circles. Sent - which means the person hasnt received or seen the message yet. Delivered - the person has received the message in their device (notification, email, etc) but might or might not have seen it. And Seen - received and seen.

But my question is...Its logical that if a person is online, the message should immediately show "delivered".... and it usually works that way. But the problem im having is that the person appears to have been online for a long time, and yet my message only says "Sent". Why does this happen? Is it possible that the person is aware of my message?

Briallyn do you have a solution for this?

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 20, 2016 at 4:02 pm

Hi Mark - that can be tricky! It does make sense that it should immediately show delivered - it's possible the person appears to be online but is inactive, or that Facebook is glitching. Is it always happening with the same person? at similar times? Does it eventually change to delivered? I'm sorry that I can't give a better solution right now but if you provide me with a bit more information I can see what I can do!

      • Dan
        May 3, 2016 at 11:14 pm

This happens with me, too, with just one other person. The message shows "sent" in Messenger, and she's definitely online - posting stuff, etc. -- but it just stays as "sent": the open blue circle with the check mark. Eventually, she sees what I've sent, but I think it sometimes takes days for it it get the "received" symbol (solid blue circle). I don't message her all that much, but enough that it's a pattern, and just with her. Thanks for any advice on this.

Hi, I sent a message the other night to someone I am not FB friends with, and it is showing as 'sent' in messenger but on my desktop this morning it showed as seen at the time it was sent the other day but when I refreshed it, it went back to sent. It has only been 'sent' on messenger the whole time. Do you know what this means? Request not approved? Blocked?

Hi CM - I'd trust the Messenger version right now – I've heard from others in the comments that you'll get a notification when a non-friend that you've sent a message to accepts your message request :)

      Hope that helps!

That is helpful! Thank you! It's still showing as just sent so I'm taking a wild guess that the message request was ignored!

Ok I'm confused. I sent a message Sunday and it hadn't been read. Had the blue check mark with clear circle and showed sent. Last night i checked and it had a pic and showed as seen. Now today its back to sent and clear circle blue checkmark. Any idea on if it was really read or not.

Hi Carrie - I'm sorry but I actually have no idea for this one! I know it's a low-tech option, but if your message is time sensitive I'd suggest either sending a follow-up message or contacting the person another way!

      Carrie,
I just had that exact samething happen to messages that I had sent months ago, last Tuesday they were marked as seen with the time they had been read and also had the little cicle profile picture of the person, and then last Friday(April 1st) I noticed that were back to saying sent. I had assumed that they were marked by the person as unread, but now that I know someone else had the exact same thing happen near the same time, I'm kind of thinking it might be some sort of facebook glitch, but I'm not sure. I guess it could be either, but it seems with the timing that it happened for both of us that it is more likely a glitch with facebook.

        April 5, 2016 at 3:28 pm

I should also mention that I am not friends with the person I sent the messages to (but I do know them).I never got a confirmation that they accepted the message request but I can only assume they did since it changed from sent to seen and as far as I know it only does that if they accept it. Initially I thought they saw the messages and then marked them as unread. I couldn't find any solid proof that they did OR that it was just a glitch with facebook, but now after hearing that it happened to someone else within a couple of days of when it happened to me, it's sounding more and more like it's a glitch. I don't know for sure though.

Just wanted to give a quick update. This has now happened to another message that I sent (to someone I am friends with). So now I am almost 100% positive it's a problem with facebook and NOT that the people receiving the messages are marking them as unread. I hope this helps anyone else having this happen to them.

So as a result, the message seen as read and changed to delivered status has been read before or already ignored and not read before

    March 22, 2016 at 5:15 pm

So i sent the message to someone who's not my friend on facebook, and it went from sent to delivered. Does that mean that they accepted message request but didnt see it and answer it yet? Or it means that they still need to accept my request ?
    Thakn you!

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 12:05 am

Hi Drizzy - when I tested this, I found that the message stayed as "sent" until I accepted it (at which point it changed to delivered) – it is possible that that has changed, however (it seems like Facebook is always tweaking these things)

So sorry for my delay in replying - I'd love to hear if you found out any more information!

        April 1, 2016 at 5:23 pm

        Thank you for the answer!

Actually i tested this by myself (i created fake facebook profile and logged in on another phone). Then i sent the message from my profile to the fake one.. It went from sent to delivered in 2 situations: first one, when i opened the request on that fake profile (not selecting accept or ignore, just opened the request); 2nd situation - if i just select ignore .

So there is a chance that person ignored me.. Or maybe is that some Androids cant show message requests.. Just like my bros phone (i got iphone).. So when he logged in via pc, he recieved notification about message request..

If they did accept my request i would get notification .. But nothing came so it is how it is :)

        Thank you anyway!

      July 23, 2016 at 3:23 pm

So it happened to me again! A message I had sent to someone I'm not friends wih after a long time of saying "sent" all of a sudden changed to "seen" on both my laptop and phone. It said it was seen at the exact date and time that it was sent and on the messenger app it showed a little circle version of their profile picture next to the message. The next day though it changed back to saying "sent". I also didn't get a notification that they accepted the message request. It's been very confusing, this is the second time this has happened to me. I know that its most likely a facebook glitch but my question is if the glitch is that it's saying it's been seen when it hasn't or if the glitch is that it goes back to saying sent and it has really been seen. I hope all of that made sense :)

Hi, what does the small profile photo means next to chat- not under the message as I know that means it was read but when u go to messenger and you have list off all chats some of them have the small profile photo on the rights as well as bigger on left? Thanks

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 12:06 am

What does the green circle mean next to the phone in messenger. Also when I get a message back it reads it to me in a weird voice how do I get rid of it

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 12:08 am

Hi Ann! The green circle next to the phone means that the person is online on messenger right now - so if you were to call them using Messenger, they would be available to talk!

I'm confused by the weird voice - do you have any text-to-voice software on your phone? I can't find the option on my messenger app to turn a voiceover on or off!

    March 17, 2016 at 8:59 pm

Hey! Do you know what does it mean when you send a message, it shows as unread for hours, either on messager or in facebook website, so you think the other person hasn't read it yet, and then later it shows as seen in both places, and the time when it shows it was read was hours before the "seen" even showed up? There's this person I've sent a couple of messages to and the messages don't show to be seen for hours, then the "seen" shows up and the time is exactly the time when I sent the message. I don't know if it's because the message was marked as unread and later read again, showing the time when it was originally read. Thank u!

    • Carrie
      March 31, 2016 at 9:35 pm

I am having a similar question except after it showed read last night (as the same time I sent it) it showed the person not active for days and then all the sudden yesterday showed as seen. Today it is back to showing as sent! If you found out what that means please reply :)

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 12:09 am

Hi Mary - what might be happening is that the person is reading the message while not connected to data (if your data is off when you read a message it won't send that information to the server so it will appear as unread until you check it again with your data on)

I can't be sure that that's what's happening - but if it's only happening with one person, I wonder if that might be the case!

Hope that helps a little - and I'm so sorry that it's taken me this long to reply to your comment!

Hi Janice - sorry for the delay in answering this comment!

I'm not entirely certain what you mean by your question - if you share something over messenger only the people that you have sent it to will be able to reply. However, if you receive something in a group message and reply within that group message, everyone else in the group will also be able to see your reply.

      Hope that helps! :)

Hi: I am trying to message a facebook friend who doesn't have Messenger and she isn't responding to my messages. I'm not getting any circles showing the messages are delivered or read. How do I know if they're getting them? Thanks

    • Briallyn Smith
      March 9, 2016 at 4:09 pm

Hi Jen - I had a very similar experience recently. When you check your Facebook messages through the Internet (not the app), do you see them? If you can see them in the message thread on your account then you can be pretty sure that she will also be able to see them next time she checks! Hope that helps :)

My messages have a blue outline circle and blue check mark but never turns blue. Just says sent not delivered. Why? Am I blocked? The messenger never rings just goes to voicemail when calling to. This person is on my friends list.

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 26, 2016 at 12:46 pm

Hi Stacy - I'm not entirely sure why your messages aren't delivering, but I can promise that it isn't because you are blocked - I just tested it out, and if you are blocked a popup message will appear when you try to send a message that says "this person is not receiving your messages right now"

It's possible that your friend just hasn't connected to messenger recently so the messages haven't downloaded on their mobile – do you have their cell number or another way of contacting them to confirm whether or not they've received your messages?

I've added someone via phone number to messenger as they no longer have fb. Now when they message I don't get notification despite all setting saying notifications are turned on. I still get notification others using messenger just the one I added via phone number I don't, why?

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 26, 2016 at 12:49 pm

Hi Tracy - that's unfortunate! I know these are silly fixes, but it might be worth trying to following:
      - restart your phone
      - delete and re-install messenger (and make sure you have the most recent updates)
      - toggle the notification settings and check and see if there's anything pressed within your conversation with this person that might be silencing the conversation

Hopefully one of those helps - if not, it might be worth contacting Messenger support so that they know about what sounds like a really frustrating bug!

    Hi Briallyn
My question is If a message have been seen, can it if you log in with another phone be seen as just delivered?
I had a "friend" who just unfriended me on facebook and removed me from messenger.
When I confronted him about it, it took a couple of days before the delivered notification turned to read notification.
Today I just happened to see that the notification for that message is back to delivered although the previous messages, from when we were friends, have the read notification.

      February 19, 2016 at 1:56 am

Hi Sanna - thanks so much for your comment!
It's a pretty unique situation, so I can't say that I've run into it before – I think maybe when you guys stopped being friends it may have caused a glitch with what information Messenger will actually show you about recent messages - but that's just a hypothesis on my end, I don't actually know for sure!

Sounds like you're probably better off without this "friend" anyways :)

    February 15, 2016 at 8:08 pm

I've sent someone I am not friends with 2 messages (one about a month and half ago and one last night) next to their name on my messenger app it has the messenger blue symbol and when i look at the info button it says Messenger under their name-- so I'm assuming they're signed on to the app. Both messages I have sent each have the blue outlined circle with the blue check in them and when i click on both of them it says Sent under them, neither of them say delivered. I have a few questions did they get 2 message requests? Also is it likely that they have seen the messages and just not accepted the message request or is it more likely that haven't seen them AND haven't accepted the message request? Also if they declined the message request would I be blocked? if that is the case I don't believe they have done that since I can still see their page and send them messages.

Thanks in advance, sorry this is so long :)

        February 17, 2016 at 1:12 pm

Hi LC - no worries about the long message :)

Just because they haven't accepted the message request doesn't mean that you're blocked.

The first message may have been sent before they started to receive notifications about messages from people they don't know (for a long time those messages would just go to an "other" folder that didn't give obvious notifications) - has anything happened since with the message you sent last night?

I hope this works out for you! In the meantime, if you have any other method of contacting this person (like an email or a phone number) that might be the best way to get this sorted out!

        • LC
          February 18, 2016 at 11:32 pm

I think when the first message was sent the "other" folder was already gone, but as of just a few minutes ago both messages still just say "Sent". So I'm assuming they haven't seen either message, so they haven't done anything with the message request(s). Thanks for your help though.

      February 17, 2016 at 1:10 pm

Hi Jo - I'm so sorry that I just got your message now! The Valentines that Messenger was sending were normal messages that were "wrapped" in virtual pink paper - it's possible that your phone didn't display the message properly - were you able to see it when you checked through the Facebook website? Have you been able to see other messages from him recently?

I don't think he would have been able to delete it before you saw it, but it is possible that the Valentine-style wrapping didn't come through!

Hi, my question is quite similar to lava's. i just have sent a message, a photo to a contact on messenger that is not my friend on fb but he has accepted my request to be my friend on messenger and since two days ago show me only the "sent" status that's the blue circle with the blue checkmark, I'm afraid that probably doesn't change the status to 'delivered' the full blue circle or seen it because this contact has erased me from messenger and not because he doesnt use an internet connection from a device ( he is using whats app in his phone)
    1. My question, if there is a way that he never get the message in his inbox even when i can see the 'sent' status?
    2. Or maybe if it's possible that they never open the message with the messenger app and only with the traditional facebook chat in a computer with a program to unblock to send the 'seen' status I will only see the 'sent' status?
    3. Maybe was a problem sending the message?
I hope you can understand my questions

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 6, 2016 at 9:27 pm

Hi Pria - thanks so much for your comment - what a confusing situation you're in!

If it's someone you feel comfortable with, the easiest thing to do may be just to send another message asking if they received the first.

Honestly, all three of the situations you suggest may have happened, and I don't know that I feel comfortable saying anything definitive - it is pretty rare for Facebook messages to fail to be delivered, but if you're anxious or the message is time sensitive then sending a follow up is likely the best way to check :) These things happen, and the person you sent the message to should understand :)

Hi, what does it mean when their mini profile picture appears at the bottom next to their own message? Does it mean that after sending their reply, they have viewed the chatbox again even if I didn't have a reply?

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 4, 2016 at 12:31 pm

Hi Wil! Don't worry - Messenger isn't quite that cryptic :)

If you see the mini profile picture in a group message, that's all of the information that you'll get about whether or not someone has seen a message.

I've also had it show up on an individual message without a time attached - but I don't think there's any additional meaning to it, it's maybe a glitch or maybe what happens when someone opens a message while you are still actively on that conversation!

Question, if a message I sent has "seen" at the bottom of it, but doesn't have a time, does that mean they opened it? Because on others I've sent, it'll say "seen", along with a time. But this one doesn't have a time, just " seen."

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 3, 2016 at 11:08 pm

Hi Katie - I know! I've seen that too, and I'm not entirely sure what the difference is (although, if it's a group message it definitely won't tell you the time!)

Even though it didn't give you the time, I think you can be pretty certain that the message has been seen :)

Thank you for your prompt reply on my previous question!
(I understand that sending to non fb friends places my msg in 'message request' folder - will they receive a notification via their FB mobile app (not mobile web browser) in case they don't typically open up their Messenger app? and will I know if they've seen/read my message? TIA)

Additionally, my fb messenger shows only the 'sent' icon which is the blue circle with blue checkmark. Shouldn't it at least show 'delivered,' or is it still possible that they've received and read my msg already and not accepted it which is why it still states 'sent' on my end? TIA

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 2, 2016 at 11:30 pm

      Not a problem :)

I think at this point it could be either that the person hasn't used a device to access the message yet (sometimes if someone doesn't have Internet/data access the message will not show as "delivered" until they do.

In this case, it may also be that you won't get any more information until they do accept your request - either way, you have done all you can and the message should get to them soon!

Yes, they should receive a notification via their mobile app alerting them to the message request :)

I'm also pretty sure that if they choose not to accept your message then you will not know that it has been seen, but if they do accept the message request then you should see whether or not they've read a message as usual :)

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 2, 2016 at 10:35 pm

Hi Matt - the main times I've seen a message without an icon is if the message is no longer the most recent message in a conversation - the icon only applies to the most recent message!

As well, if you're using Facebook in web, there should only be a checkmark with "seen" or an icon of your friend's profile picture (in a group message) visible!

      Hope that helps :)

Hi Natasha - I'm so sorry, that sounds incredibly frustrating! Are you able to access messages through Facebook online without a problem? If you can, then I would switch to using Facebook on your phone's web browser to answer messages – I know it's frustrating, but at least people will be able to communicate with you!

Unfortunately this sounds like a problem that you might have to take up with Messenger support - I would suggest sending them an error report here: https://www.facebook.com/help/messenger-app/248748738662378

Hi Tinin - I'm so sorry but I just saw this comment now!
I have actually never seen that symbol before, and I haven't been able to find it during a quick search online either. A blue check in a blue circle should mean that a message has been delivered, and normally if there's red involved it's an exclamation point and it means that your message could not be delivered.

      Hope that helps!
