Welcome July’s Recruits To Make Use Of’s Writing Team

Please welcome the latest – and for the moment the last – recruits to the Make Use Of writing squad. We’ve now decided to put our recruiting on hold for at least a few months while we put our existing staff through their paces to see if they’ve got what it takes to give you the high quality articles you’ve come to expect from Make Use Of.

There were a couple of last recruits from July and we will introduce them when their first articles come out.

Jerry Kid

I’m Jerry and by day I am the Training Director for Pacific Union GMAC Real Estate located in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I am also a California real estate broker with over 22 years experience in all phases of real estate brokerage including sales, brokerage management and I was even the IT Director for a large regional real estate company.

Being dually addicted to real estate and technology, my passion is to combine the two in ways that help real estate agents do a better job of working for their clients and also to help them make a better living for themselves. Towards that end I started a real estate and technology blog in January.

I am excited about writing for Make Use Of and already have my first article published. As I explained to Mark, it’s probably good for a guy as old as me to be here as it may be helpful to other members of my generation, the Boomers, as I will bring my perspective to the table.

Ken Burkes

I’m Ken and I’m very happy to be a writer here at Make Use Of. I’m your average geek who loves discovering new websites and playing a lot of games. I’ve always been interested about the internet and have been striving to learn as much as possible ever since I caught wind of it.

I’m currently taking classes at a local community college in hopes of getting a job at something web related. Hopefully, my work here can inspire me for the future.

I think of myself as a very social person, and although I might not comment a lot about the social websites, I spend hours each day stumbling, digging, tagging, and reading.

Learning as much as I can is my goal here and all these social websites are the perfect places to learn more.  I do not have a blog at the moment, mainly because I’m too lazy busy to set one up, but I’ll alert everyone when I do get started.

Saikat Basu

Hi, I’m Saikat and I call myself a ‘pseudo-geek’ in a writer’s garb. Moving away from a background in Business Management, I am now trying to teach myself Instructional Designing. A frequent contributor to citizen news websites, I also have avid leanings towards technology, health and the environment.

When I am not not wetting my quill you can find me ’stumbling’ and ‘digging’  the net for informational tidbits or just scouring around for the next big trekking adventure. Writing is now not only a form of self expression for me but also a means to improve myself through the bits of wisdom I gain each day from the written and read word.

If you have a grouse, you can also catch me on my personal blog ruminating about the positves in our world.

Abraham

Hi, I’m Abraham, I’m a nineteen-year-old college student, born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. I was introduced to free open source software (FOSS) a few years ago when my copy of Internet Explorer took a nose dive and a friend introduced me to Firefox. Naturally, I loved it and in time my computer was loaded with FOSS. Then in late 2007, I took the plunge into Linux and haven’t looked back since.

When not preaching the virtues of open source, I enjoy reading classic Sci-Fi, playing obscure video games, dabbling in programming and of course writing.

Blake Elias

Hi everyone, my name is Blake. I was born a geek, and I’ve been messing around with computers since I was 3.  Since then I’ve become a computer addict (part time web designer, full time tech geek), constantly learning about new technologies and figuring out ways to do things better.

I write about my thoughts and activities regarding Linux, Google, useful programs, web development and computers in general on my personal blog, The New Geek (update: the site no longer online)

I also like playing chess and discussing politics; other than that, when I’m not on my computer I think about the quickest way to get home so I can get back on my computer.

Charnita Morring-Fance

Charnita Morring-Fance

Hi. My name is Charnita and I’m a Kansas Army wife.  I’m currently a homemaker with a sincere passion for blogging and social media. I enjoy surfing the internet and discovering new social media sites. I have been an internet junkie for about 3 years now.

With there being nothing here to do in Kansas, the majority of my spare time is spent online and I’ve managed to start up six websites. My latest site is my Social Web Tools blog, which I first started in an effort to pass the time whenever my husband is away. Right now I’m focusing on sharing my internet discoveries with my readers and learning more about internet marketing.

Besides the internet I love music, animals, video games (mostly old school stuff), and bugging my husband (something I do quite well). I’m pretty nervous about writing for such a large reader base here on Make Use Of, so I’m hoping to adjust quickly!

@ Mark: Will there be sub-category feeds at MUO as you add more and more writers?

Well as I said, we won’t be taking on any more writers for the forseeable future as we’ve realised that the focus needs to be on quality, not quantity. I don’t see any more writers coming on board until at least the beginning of 2009.

It’s interesting that you ask about sub-category feeds. We had someone the other day suggest merging all the feeds together into one – the main feed, the Directory feed and Geeky Fun. So it’s clear we have lots of readers who want different things from us. Some want a merged feed and some want broken up feeds – one for Linux, one for Cool Web Apps, etc.

The Make Use Of editors will definately be discussing and debating all of these suggestions in depth over the next few weeks and months as we continue to improve the site and when we make a decision, you’ll see right away what we’ve decided to do!
