The world of social media is a weird place. It lets us meet new people, stay in touch, and share everyday experiences with them no matter the distance. It also gave us Kardashians and the ice bucket challenge.

We all get sucked into the world of trends and challenges that friends send our way. But how far are you willing to go to stay trendy? Would you show your naked bum in public or stick your lips into a shot glass?

Here are 10 of the weirdest trends to sweep social media. How many of them do you remember? (And how many did you take part in?)

1--2. Rainbows and Unicorns Forever

It all started in 2016 when the "dream come true" rainbow bagels took over the internet. Quickly it was established that rainbow colors were the new hit, and then we saw rainbow doughnuts, cakes, even burgers. When there was no more food to color, rainbows migrated onto our nails, clothes, and our hair.

But the rainbow trend didn't come alone, it was quickly followed by all things unicorn. If you still haven't tried the Starbucks Unicorn Frappucino, you better hurry up. Soon there might be no more baristas left willing to make one for you.

3. Can You Tell the Difference?

Speak of the bagel... "Shiba or marshmallow" is a part of an adorable "puppy or bagel" trend started by Karen Zack on Twitter.

This trend will never fail to brighten your day. Take the many variations of it, like "sheepdog or mop," "parrot or guacamole," and the Japanese version. "bread roll or a baby's arm." What could be cuter?

4. Pokémon Craze

We'll remember 2016 as the year of the Pokémon Craze. All things Pokémon were on social media all over again because of the Pokémon Go app. Interestingly, it kept its popularity through all the safety and data mining concerns, and even criminal cases.

There was no escape from Pokémon. Neither in your real life (as most of your friends were probably playing it) nor on social media. Users populating their profiles with pictures of them holding Pokémon, local businesses using lures to actually "lure" the players into the restaurants, shops selling everything Pokémon-themed.

One of the craziest examples of this mania, however, was a case of an account with a full Pokédex being sold online for $1,499. A little expensive for a childhood obsession, isn't it?

5. Harlem Shake

The familiar tune, the lone dancer in a helmet, the beat drop, and the crazy shaking crowd. Proud ancestor of all weird internet trends, Harlem Shake has earned its place on our list because of how explosive and popular it was at the time.

In 2013, YouTube Filthy Frank started the trend by uploading the first video with the dance, then another vlogger, SunnyCoastSkate, added a few finishing touches to it. According to Youtube Trends, in February 2013, there were 40,000 spinoffs uploaded, generating over 700 million views.

Why do people love it so much? It's funny, it involves dancing, and it's easy for anyone to participate. At the end, it grew so wide and became so diverse, there were Harlem Shakes popping up from every corner of the world, featuring everyone from college students to military personnel.

6. Planking

planking on the plane

This isn't a Pilates exercise, but another internet craze that took over social networks (particularly Facebook) in 2011. Planking -- or "the lying down game" -- refers to the "art" of lying down in unusual public places.

Popular destinations include restaurant tables, public squares, various rocks, and anything you can use to support your body while planking. The pictures of people planking could be found in great numbers on Facebook.

Most users that followed that trend were after the social media fame. The Pujie Girls [No Longer Available], Taiwan's best-known plankers, had almost 100,000 fans following them on Facebook at the time. However, it's not a safe trend to be a part of. Many people were injured while attempting planking in dangerous locations, including 20-year-old Acton Beale, an Australian guy who died after he fell from his balcony while planking.

7. Beautiful Landscapes With Naked Butts

The trend of showing your butt in gorgeous nature is rather new. It was launched on Instagram, where @cheekyexploits is collecting pictures of people from all over the world showing their beautiful behinds in even more beautiful landscapes.

They claim to be "making the world happier through butts", and who can deny that? Follow them to get a fresh dose of butts to start your day, or join the trend and send your own pictures to be featured on Instagram.

8--9. The Naked Challenges

Naturally, that's not the only mania on social media that involves people posing naked for the pictures. The "Hold a Coke with Your Boobs" challenge was repeatedly called "one of the dumbest things that ever happened on social media" by users. And not without reason.

In 2015, it started as a campaign to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. To become a part of it, women were encouraged to post selfies on Instagram of themselves holding a can of Coke between their boobs. Soon enough it was discovered that the whole thing was a hoax.

In 2016 the naked challenge was to take a selfie with one finger covering all of one's private parts. No special cause this time. And who needs a cause, really?

10. Beastly

Our collection wouldn't be complete without a few examples of bizarre beauty trends.

Are your eyebrows on fleek? #EyebrowsOnFleek on Instagram will bring up a vast collection of brows, of all colors and shapes. Some of them on faces more famous than others.

Would you stick your lips into a shot glass in an attempt to make your lips look like those of Kylie Jenner after lip injections? Hint: it's not going to happen. Your lips will turn into a swollen mess at best -- a fact proven by many who have tried this (horrific images can be found at #KylieJennerChallenge).

And the weirdest of them all: #FurNails on Instagram. Has fashion gone too far this time? Do fur nails make using the toilet more complicated than it should be? These are the questions we might never find the answers for.
