There are more websites than any of us can ever hope to visit in our lifetimes. And, thanks to the march of the smartphone, there are also more apps than any of us can ever hope to download and install.

Every single one of these websites and apps was created by people like you and I. And we suck for not getting there first.

$19 Billion, You Say?!

We want to know, What Website Or App Do You Wish You’d Created? This question was, rather obviously, prompted by Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp Facebook WhatsApp, SkyDrive OneDrive, Yahoo Siri, Apple Tesla [Tech News Digest] Facebook WhatsApp, SkyDrive OneDrive, Yahoo Siri, Apple Tesla [Tech News Digest] Facebook buys WhatsApp, FCC responds to the loss of 'net neutrality', SkyDrive becomes OneDrive, Yahoo wants its own Siri, Apple is interested in Tesla, and Samsung mocks Apple in its latest set of television commercials. Read More for $19 billion. It was such a big deal, both figuratively and financially, that it left many people wishing they were the WhatsApp guys, who are now, suddenly and inexplicably, instant billionaires.

Most of us would like to have more money than we have now. So, seeing ordinary people selling their app for billions of dollars leads to envy and a degree of wishful thinking. In essence, if you had created WhatsApp then you would now be a billionaire. Truth.

WhatsApp is far from the only website or app that people wish they had created. And money isn’t the only reason people have for envying the creators of these properties…

Perhaps you wish you had created Facebook because you would love to have Mark Zuckerberg’s power and influence. Or Twitter because of the way it has changed how we communicate. Or Google for its ability to curate the Web.

Perhaps you wish you had created Angry Birds because of its simplicity. Or Candy Crush Saga for its ability to part you with your cash. Or Spotify. Or Mint. Or IMDb. Netflix, Instagram, Pocket, Tumblr. The list goes on and on.

Simply tell us in the comments section below what website or app you wish you had created, and why you wish you had had the idea first. If you need some inspiration then be sure to check out our Top List section, especially the Best Websites, the Best Android Apps, and the Best iPhone Apps.

For what reason? I mean, I know it's a good company and all, but what particular reason do you have for wishing you owned it?

Steam. I love having all those games at the tap of a mouse. If I'd invented it, I would have included emulators for all the old consoles and pc's and complete libraries of games for them all (including 100% controller support and classic 2 player games would only require one purchase and both players could play on the same pc).

Nice answer :) I don't think the likes of Sega, Sony, and Nintendo would have been too happy with your for including old emulators on Steam.

I am little geeky, I want to create a app that helps farmers and indicates if weather condition is bad in the area he is farming.

The question wasn't what app do you want to create but what existing app would you like to own!

I am very particular about the services and programs I use, and as such I'm never 100% happy with any of them. I'm just picky I guess. But when that's combined with the amount of negativity targeted at anything popular, it makes me think that I wouldn't want to own any of them. Why open myself up to that amount of negativity because of something I'm not 100% happy with?

So I'm going to say that I don't want an existing website or service. I want to come up with an idea of my own, make it, and grow it. That's what I want to own, and it's much more plausible than trying to own something that already exists, since I don't have $19Bn in pocket change.

[Sorry for the odd answer, I get like that late at night :)]

But if you owned one of the websites or apps you're not happy with you could change it until it's exactly as you want it!

Have you seen how people react to the most minor changes that Facebook makes? Changing everything isn't possible without alienating your audience.
