The financial state of the music industry, Tinder tells you who to vote for, Pornhub gives virtual reality a boost, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-ray gets pirated, and the drunk hoverboard prank.
Paid Streaming Good, Free Streaming Bad
The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has published its report on the state of the music industry in 2015 [PDF link]. Overall revenues are up, rising 0.9 percent to $7 billion, but it’s the source of those revenues which makes for interesting reading.
Streaming now trumps everything in terms of revenue, generating $2.4 billion in 2015. However, the vast majority of that comes from paid subscriptions, with free, ad-supported streams only generating $385 million. This compares unfavorably to the $416 million generated by sales of vinyl, a format which is either awesome or terrible, depending on which of our authors you believe.
To end on a high note, let’s not forget that overall revenues have increased, suggesting that piracy really isn’t having the impact on sales it once did. The Internet has changed everything, but people will still buy music (or access to music) when given the opportunity to do so.
Tinder Finds Your Presidential Match
Tinder wants to match you with one of the candidates currently vying to be the next President of the United States of America. That being John Kasich, Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, and Ted Cruz.
It looks like it’ll be Clinton vs. Trump in the race for the White House, but which candidate should you be voting for? In a partnership with Rock the Vote, Tinder will try to match you with the candidate who most closely shares your views on the world.
U.S. users will see a Swipe the Vote card, and be asked to agree or disagree on various statements. After 10 questions of swiping right or left, you’ll be matched with the candidate you actually agree with on most things. Which could throw up some surprising results.
Pornhub Launches a VR Porn Channel
Virtual reality is currently gearing up for another crack at the big time, having failed to take off the previous times it was talked up as the next big thing. The jury is out as to whether it will succeed this time around, but with the likes of Facebook (owner of Oculus VR, which makes the Oculus Rift), HTC (maker of the HTC Vive), and Sony (with the PlayStation VR) on board, the signs are good.
And now we have another sign that VR may actually work out this time around… Pornhub is on board. Pornhub is, for the uninitiated, one of the biggest porn sites in existence, boasting 60 million visitors per day. And it has now launched a section dedicated to VR porn. We’re going to let you Google that rather than link to it directly. Because reasons.
Pornhub has partnered with a company called BaDoinkVR to showcase content that’s available to everyone but optimized for those using VR headsets. Pornhub Vice President Corey Price said in a statement:
“Virtual reality is the next phase in the constantly metamorphosing world of adult entertainment, and will provide users with a mesmeric experience unlike anything they’ve seen before. Now, our users are not only able to view our content, but be protagonists in the experience and interact with their favorite porn stars.”
The Star Wars Blu-ray Torrent Awakens
The home video release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is only a couple of weeks away, with the DVD and Blu-ray due to land in stores on April 5. However, as reported by TorrentFreak, a copy of the film has already leaked online, with pirates downloading it more than 250,000 times in the first 12 hours of it being available.
A poor quality copy of the movie has been floating around for months, of course, ever since one
brave soul smelly thief filmed it in his local theater. But this is a clean copy, hence the rush to get hold of it prior to official release.
This will obviously have an impact on sales of the DVD and Blu-ray, but how much an impact remains in question. Plus, we’re talking about a movie that has already generated revenues of $2 billion, so it’s hard to feel too sorry for Disney and Lucasfilm.
The Drunk Hoverboard Prank
And finally, there’s only one thing that could make those dumb hoverboards (that aren’t really hoverboards) even dumber: a drunk rider. This YouTube prankster proves as much, by riding around Las Vegas on a hoverboard (not a hoverboard) pretending to be inebriated to the nth degree.
Much hilarity ensues as he trolls passers-by, persuades strangers to stop him from falling, and generally acts like a fool. Which is exactly what he is. What have we learned from this? Nothing, except that I may be too prudish to fully appreciate what Vegas has to offer. [H/T CNET]
