Which Video Game(s) Are You Most Looking Forward To This Holiday Season? [We Ask You]

We’re now at the beginning of September, and video games are being released in a slow drip-drip fashion. The games aren’t particularly AAA titles either, though some, such as Sleeping Dogs, have ended up being surprising hits. The reason for this slowdown in weekly releases is the same as it is at this time every year.

Video games publishers insist on releasing the biggest titles in their line-up in the build-up to the holiday season, so late September through to early December are packed full of must-play titles that they hope will find a place under the Christmas tree. This makes little sense given that the average age of gamers has increased over the decades so that it’s now adults rather than children who are most likely to be found staring at a screen for hours.

Still, it’s the trap the industry seems to have fallen in to, and it means the next few months will be awash with releases of some major video games. Which sounds like the perfect subject for the We Ask You column.

This Week’s Question…

Which Video Game(s) Are You Most Looking Forward To This Holiday Season?

Just a few of the titles due for release this side of the holidays are Borderlands 2, Dishonored, Resident Evil 6, Assassin’s Creed III, Halo 4, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. There are many more, and Grand Theft Auto V may possibly even make a surprise appearance. But which, of both the games mentioned above or any others on the release schedule, are you most looking forward to getting your hands on?

You can also take this opportunity to opine on the current state of the video games industry, publishers’ over-reliance on holiday sales, or even the prospects for new hardware in 2013. Is the fact that the next-generation will soon be upon us affecting your desire for the games being released currently? As long as any comments made are based roughly on the subject matter put forth then they will be gladly received as part of the wider discussion.

Drawing Conclusions

All comments will be digested to form conclusions in a follow-up post next week where we will detail what You Told Us. One reader will be chosen for the coveted ‘Comment Of The Week’, getting their name up in lights, the respect of other readers, and 150 MakeUseOf points to use for Rewards or Giveaways (as long as they are registered when making said comment). What more motivation than that do you need to respond?

We Ask You is a weekly column dedicated to finding out the opinions of MakeUseOf readers. The questions asked are usually open-ended and likely to start a conversation. Some are opinion-based, while others see you sharing tips and advice, or advocating tools and apps to fellow MakeUseOf Readers. This column is nothing without you, as MakeUseOf is nothing without you.

With Guild Wars 2′s recent release, I’ve been sinking all of my free time into that game. It’s definitely a breath of fresh air in the world of MMORPGs and the lack of a subscription fee is a mighty plus. Between that and Dota 2, I don’t think I have time for any other games; they’ll carry me for many months to come.

My pick is Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch which is stated to be release Jan 2013 if that still counts as the holiday season. Just sort of getting tired of every game being a shooter or played in the 1st person.

I personally mostly have RPGs for my Xbox360. I still need Dragon’s Dogma, though.

I think I won’t be looking at many new games this year, since I still have some games to get(I still need an Batman: Arkham game, still need to play one of the Dead Space games, etc.), but I think there are some great games on the way. Dishonored seems pretty cool. And after checking IGN’s list of upcoming games, I now know that there’s a new Bioshock coming and after seeing a video of their channel, I also expect Dead Space 3, which is pretty close to the Winter holidays.

But, like I said before, I think I’m gonna try and focus on the lost games this year. I’ve seen an ad at a shop saying that it’s selling the Ps3 for €80(usually it’s around €200.- or more, so it’s a pretty good price). That way I could also collect some games I lost on the Xbox360, like White Knight Chronicles(Often it’s said that the Ps3 has White Knight Chronicles and the Xbox360 has Lost Odyssey, and Lost Odyssey’s an amazing game!). I do wonder if it’s a good choice, though, since when Sony and Microsoft’s next gen consoles get shown, the console might get even lower(saving me some money for the games on it, of course :D)

RoosterTeeth’s placing their faith in Trials Evolution bringing new user-made content, giving the players much more playing time, than expected, so I might need to check that out as well.

The only thing that’s left for me to do is check up on computer games(I spend most of my time on my laptop, so I’m not that much of a PC gamer(Never have been)). Most people are especially excited for Guild Wars 2, I think. And there’s new games popping up online like every day, so I suppose I could be busy if I spend my time on PC games.

I’m most looking forward to Grand Theft Auto V and Assassin’s Creed 3. Both are sequels, but they promise new ways to innovate their respective series–GTA with the shiny new graphics and huge world, and Assassin’s Creed with new mechanics like trees and buildings and a new location that is far more familiar to me than the other cities it’s been in.

I’m looking forward to the new X-COM/UFO Enemy Unknown game.

Mind I’ve looked forward to several ‘new Enemy Unknown’ games and they have turned out to be ho-hum at best.

I am looking forward to play Call of Duty: Black Ops II. I am a very big fan of this franchise because of its creativity and real-time simulation of war zone. Saw its trailer and its mind blowing as it has added new weapons and new transportation vehicles.
