Viber, the app that lets you call and text others for free over an internet connection, has updated its app for Android and iOS. Viber 4.0 comes with a new push to talk feature, a sticker market, some improvements under the hood, and a few Android-exclusive features.
Push To Talk lets you send voice messages to your friends, which they can listen to at their convenience. Viber claims it has simplified Push To Talk from a four-step process—record, send, download, play—to a single step, reducing the average response time to a 15 second message to 4-6 seconds, from the usual 45-60 seconds.
Ever since Facebook came out with Chat Stickers, it’s been a trendy item and with v4.0, Viber is launching a ‘Sticker Market’ where users can access a selection of over 1000 fun and playful stickers. The market will also feature exclusive content tied into timely events and holidays.
For group conversations in Viber, the limit of number of participants has been raised to 100. Additionally, users can select custom backgrounds for conversations with the new background gallery. And any message can be forwarded to a contact or a group.
Although it’s one of the best iPhone apps, on Android, Viber 4.0 has a few more features. For starters, the app has been optimized to run on Android tablets, bringing the user’s mobile contacts to the tablet and providing full synchronization with messages and calls on the other devices.
Notifications have also been improved for devices running Android 4.0 and up. There’s a new “Light Up Screen” setting to do just that when you get a message. And finally, you can use Viber messaging while on a call.
