I have seen one mouse and keyboard on multiple monitors, but not on multiple types of computer work stations. Being able to copy and paste from one to another is a great feature. I am definitely going to have to check Synergy out.

Synergy is a GREAT program.

Sometimes I'll use it with my Windows laptop sitting next to the monitor hooked up to my Linux machine.

Everyone thinks I'm a magician when they see the mouse glide between the screens of two different computers running completely different OSes.

I wouldn't say that it just works. It works, but there are hickups. I've worked around them as I use it every day so that I can have one keyboard in a good place and share it between my desktop and its two monitors and my notebook and its two. People that come to sit at my desk are often amazed when I just move the mouse over to one of the notebook's monitors and start typing there.

You've hit upon my only real complaint. Supposedly there is some amount of work going on in the background and if you feel comfortable compiling from source, you will be pleasantly surprised. I have never taken the time to see what the code currently does to know if this is the case or not.

I've been using it for a long time as well, and the only issue I notice is copying and pasting large texts between my linux and windows boxes. Other than that, everything has been pretty smooth.

@John: I used Synergy about a year ago and it worked great. If it hasn't been updated in 2 years, that's probably because it just works--i.e., it hasn't needed any updates.

It's a great cross-platform solution. I was using it for side-by-side Windows and Linux machines back when I used it before, but now I have VMs instead. I should mention it to one of my colleagues again though; he normally runs Linux but occasionally has to set up a Windows box alongside his Linux machine.

Input Director (http://www.inputdirector.com) is a Windows only alternative to Synergy that's easier to configure, more stable and updated regularly. Synergy hasn't been updated in over 2 years. If you've got Windows systems, it's definitely worth checking out.

The title is incorrect. It says "Multiple Computers on One MONITOR and Keyboard". It should say "Multiple Computers on One MOUSE and Keyboard". The article mentions that you need a monitor per computer.

Also, cool idea for an app.

i've fooled around with synergy in the past. it works really well and allows for real time control without any of the lag of remote access software.

BUT you have a lot of room in their computing space. say you have 3 desktops. that's 3 mice, 3 keyboards and 3 monitors. with the prevalence of dual wide screens, that could potentially be 6 monitors!

imo, a kvm switch is the way to go. of course synergy might be a more attractive option if you are a multitasker and need to monitor multiple computers at the same time.
