You say you cannot manually switch to offline mode, but I thought there was an option on the firefox menus to do just that:
File > Work Offline
I don’t use Gears so it might not work but it would make sense if it did!

I never had a problem with Google Gears, but then again, I waited a while before installing.

I like Gears because my wifi coverage is sometimes spotty when using the University wifi. But, I probably should just unplug and just enjoy the sunshine without the laptop glare

Since I don’t have a laptop and I have 24 hour unlimited net usage, I haven’t seen the need to use Gears since my computer is hardly ever off.

When Gears came out, I did give it a try though, just to satisfy my curiosity, and it crashed my computer three times!! Since I rely a lot on first impressions, you could say that Gears left a really bad taste in my mouth so I haven’t used it since. I said in my blog at the time that Google should rename it Google Crap.

Gears functionality is built into Firefox 3, but it is up to the individual application developers to “turn it on” (Source: 5 Extensions You Won’t Need with Firefox 3)

The strange thing is that Gears does not work with Firefox 3.0 yet.
