One of the coolest features of iOS 5 is the deep integration of Twitter. It is everywhere in the iPhone and iPad. You can quickly tweet a photo or video just as easily as you can click on an app or send a text message. Apple embraced Twitter as an important part of their devices, and the devices are better because of it. Texting and making calls are great, but sharing with the world through Twitter is the future.
However, not everyone uses Twitter. Some people want to stick with Facebook, Foursquare or even MySpace. In addition, it is not easy to send a tweet with just text without opening the Twitter app. What can you do about this situation? Well I have just the solution for you – a brand new Cydia tweak called Fusion. It allows to you send updates to Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Foursquare quickly and easily without launching any apps. It even comes with a bonus AssistantExtensions tweak that integrates with Siri.
You will have to do a little legwork to get everything up and running with Fusion. First, you will have to grab it from the Cydia Store. It costs $2, which is very reasonable for how awesome it is. Once you have it downloaded, you will need to head to your device’s settings screen and scroll down to Fusion.
From here, you will need to set up an Activator event, so you have a method of bringing the quick compose to the screen. Click “Quick Compose” from the settings screen and then “Activator.” From here, you will need to choose how you want the box to open. You can choose options such as pinching the icons, triple tapping the home screen and all kinds of other methods.
Once you choose an event in Activator, you will need to scroll through the list of programs that can use that event and find the “System Actions” section. Under this section, you will see “Compose Tweet.” Click on that and it will open up the quick compose screen when you perform your selected action. Personally, I went with a short hold on the status bar because it was quick and unobtrusive.
Next, you will need to set up access to your different social networks. To do this simply click “Plugins,” and click on each plug-in that you wish to use. Twitter will be set up automatically if you have it in your iPhone, but for Facebook, Foursquare and MySpace you will need to enable access in order for Fusion to post to them.
Composing A Tweet
You will need to perform your Activator event to have the box show up. From there you simply type in your tweet. On the bottom of the quick compose, there is a box with an arrow, clicking that will allow you to choose the other social networks that this post will be shared with.
You can also choose to add a location to the post by clicking the “Add Location” button on the bottom left of the quick compose box. It will take a couple of seconds to track you down, and then your location will be shared with everyone on your social networks.
This app comes with a special bonus, which allows you to post to any of your social networks using the magical powers of Siri. You will need to have AssistantExtensions installed to use the Siri part of this application. Check out this article for a full breakdown of how to use AssistantExtensions.
To post something to your social networks you will need to say “Post status to” and the name of the network or networks you wish to post to, followed by the word “saying” and the content of the update. So for example, you might say, “Post status to Facebook and Twitter saying my name is Dave.” It is a quick and easy way to share the latest happenings without ever typing a thing.
Fusion is an awesome way to make sharing even easier from your iDevice. One of the best features of this app is that the social networks work with plug-ins; so the developer can always add more networks in the future. In fact, he says he plans to add more soon, so expect to see free updates down the road to make your social sharing experience even better!
