Today’s web apps and extensions seem to have finally cottoned on to the idea that pictures are extremely useful when it comes to creativity and desirability. I guess we have the likes of Pinterest and Tumblr to thank for that. A collection of images manages to express so much in a quick viewing. It gives a great overview to the sorts of things that appeal to the collector, and makes you wonder if you like the item yourself.
However, in order to have people make a beautiful collection of images, we need to ensure it’s easy for them to do so. And this is where Wantworthy comes in. It’s a site designed to let people create an extremely visual, universal wishlist. It’s essentially Pinterest, Pocket, Tumblr and your Universal Amazon Wishlist all in one.
The Wantworthy website is the place for your collection. Sign up for an account using your own details or Facebook, then it will take you on a quick tour of how to collect your list of things you want. It will also automatically try to link your Facebook account, because it really is more fun with friends.
Want Stuff From All Over The Web
Using Wantworthy in the browser is a two-step process. Firstly, you click on a bookmarklet (which you set up just after you sign up to the website). Secondly, a window pops up, lets you choose a few details and lets you save it to your collection. You can decide on the image to use, which group to add it to (more on those later), add brand details, and set the item type. All of these things make it easier to find the collected items later.
Browsing Wantworthy Itself
While you’re on the Wantworthy site, you can browse other cool items by checking out your friends and filtering your search via store, groups, or item type. If you’re really keen, you can click through to buy the items. If not, just keep clicking “Want”. This is the same way you’d browse your own things to find them later. If you want to see Wantworthy’s recommended items, check out the Wantworthy wall and friend them for later by hovering over their image and clicking the tick.
While the store and item types are fairly self-explanatory, the groups are not. Unlike most groups you see online, these are not groups you can join. Rather, when saving items you can dictate what sort of grouping to give it. For instance, “Classy Evening Wear” or “Adorable Kids Gear”. They’re basically like your Pinterest boards. Unfortunately, you can’t set the groups when you click “Want” (the blue plus icon) on an item on the site, but it’s easy enough to group things later.
Your Wantworthy Account
When browsing your own items, you can filter according to all the usual things: item type, group and store. However, you’ll also see how much it costs and a quick “Buy” button if you’re ready to purchase.
By default your account is public and you can share your list using a unique URL. It’s not possible to browse random accounts via the site, but if you know (or can guess) a user’s URL you can see the contents. Since Wantworthy automatically creates a URL for you using a “FirstnameLastname” format, it’s pretty easy to guess a URL. You might like to change yours if you want to obscure your account somewhat.
If you are friends with someone via Wantworthy, you’ll see a link to their page under the friends icon and vice versa. What this means is that you should always treat this as a public account, even if it is somewhat obscured.
The public nature of your account also makes it the perfect way to share your Christmas wishlist with family. However, the item won’t be crossed off when purchased by a friend, so it’s not the ideal registry list for a wedding or similar event as an item may accidentally be purchased multiple times.
Why Not Use Pinterest?
Wantworthy is more specifically about things you want to buy than Pinterest is. It prominently features the cost, the store, brand details and filters by item type and your nominated groups. This makes it perfect for keeping your ultimate wishlist online.
Wantworthy have also said that they are working on price alerts, meaning you’ll know if these items go on sale. That’s an incredibly powerful tool to have!
There is a Wantworthy Chrome Extension hyped in the Chrome store, but it is really just a Chrome App, meaning it will feature in your App list and take you straight to the website. It’s not required to make the bookmarklet work.
Fresh For iOS
If you’re an iOS user, you can use the new Fresh app to add items to your wishlist. The Fresh app lets you follow stores you love and keep track of new arrivals. It’s a fashion-lover’s heaven.
If you want to get inspiration about more things you may want, check out the Wantworthy Tumblr, where they feature the things “Most Wanted” by people, alongside random awesome things they themselves want.
What do you think? Love it? Or will you just use a private board on Pinterest? What are your thoughts?
