And while Instagram might be often (and unfairly) better known for food photos, or even as a marketer’s heaven, the social networking and photographing app actually offers an interesting window into parts of the world you might never get to see otherwise.

The most obvious place to start when it comes to looking for travel photos on Instagram is National Geographic. Not only does the travel magazine have a significant following on Instagram, it has several accounts you’ll want to follow. The official feed NatGeo shares photos from the magazine from all over the world. On the other hand, if you want to go behind the scenes with National Geographic travels, NatGeoTraveler is the account to follow.
You might not necessarily think of Breaking News when looking for travel accounts on Instagram but the way that the photo account is curated makes it a great way to keep up with world events. Following Breaking News on Instagram gives you a window into the biggest stories from around the world. With everything from celebrations to explosions – keeping up with Breaking News on Instagram gives you an interesting view of the world from your phone.
Matador describes itself as a travel media company, so just by going off on that alone, you know their Instagram feed is going to be gorgeous. And it certainly doesn’t disappoint. With photos from Iceland to Ecuador, from Canada to Nepal, following this account ensures a breathtaking view into every corner of the globe.
Now we come to a few of the individual accounts run by talented photographers from all over the world. Japhet Weeks, a multimedia journalist based in Cairo, gives a fascinating look into life in a post-revolution Egypt. Photographing key events in the country as it goes through a tumultuous transition as well as scenes of everyday life, you’ll also want to follow his wife, a photojournalist herself, Sollsken.
Uncornered Market is the Instagram account of Daniel Noll who’s been on the road since December 2006. His latest photos take us into a side of South Africa not often seen, while scrolling further back takes the viewer to Germany, New Zealand, to the Czech Republic, and more. Following this account ensures a heady trip around the world, in as random an order as you can imagine, so you’ll never know where you might end up next.
For another country specific account, vagfrag is a must-follow. The Instagram account of Greek photographer Vaggelis Fragkakis, not only does it offer a window into life in Athens, Greece, it does so with a distinct and beautiful photographic style. The majority of his photos take on a blue-tinted monotone that make for a poignant depiction of the city and its people.
Murad Osmann‘s take on travel photography is a unique one. Rather than focus solely on the places that he goes, he has created a huge following for himself by depicting his exciting travels as seen led by his girlfriend. A stunning gallery is full of photos taken walking behind his girlfriend, as she reaches her hand back to the camera.
Another unique way to view the world is through an account that focuses entirely on payphones. Starting out with photos of payphones in Los Angeles, it expanded into New York City, Chicago and other cities in California. While the original account says little about where these phones are, a user gallery generated using the hashtag #payphonegraphy pays tribute to near-defunct payphones around the world.
Tube in Black and White
For a unique view of London, Tube in Black and White takes you into London’s infamous underground system, and as the name indicates, it’s an entirely black and white journey. With an extremely candid gallery of photos, that often get in the face of commuters on the London tube, it almost feels like you’re right there with them.
For a unique view of the world Björn Kindler‘s is an account you’ll definitely want to follow. As a pilot, Kindler has access to views that just don’t come easy on a regular basis, and that makes for a pretty fascinating feed of photos, many of which are taken from a bird’s eye view.
