trapster logo Trapster Is The Best Way To Avoid A Ticket While Driving [iOS]Getting a speeding ticket is never a good thing. They are expensive in terms of initial cost, and they make your car insurance go up, which increases your monthly expenses. There is also the factor of your time, because getting pulled over is a good way to waste 15 or 20 minutes. Of course, you should be driving within the legal speed limits for your area, but mistakes happen, and knowing when there is a speed trap ahead can be a great way to avoid making those mistakes in an area where it will be the most costly.

Fear not, because the Trapster mobile service is the iOS app that will save the day for you. It will keep you posted on the hiding places for the police. It offers other cool features that will help you make your driving experience a safer, more pleasant time, and really, that’s all you can ask for from your time behind the wheel We all want to get from point A to point B as quickly and safely as possible, and Trapster makes that a little easier.

To take full advantage of the features contained within the app, you will need to make an account. To do so, click the button on the bottom right of the screen, and the account creation section will pop up. If you already have an account, log in with it.

Once you have an account, you can start enjoying all of the features, mainly, the ability to report anything you see on the road. To do so, tap the red button on the bottom of the screen, and click the icon that best matches what you see. For example, if you see a police car hiding on the side of the road, click the “Live Police” button. If you see an accident that other drivers should know about, click the “Accident” button, and so on.

You can report on almost anything that will cause problems for other drivers, and this is what makes the app work, because other motorists will be doing the same thing, which will help make your driving experience better. You will see symbols on the map that tell you things others have reported. Everything from live police to road kill will show up on the map, and this knowledge will make you a safer, more informed driver, which is always a good thing.

Trapster02 Trapster Is The Best Way To Avoid A Ticket While Driving [iOS]

When you see something reported on the map, you can vote on it to let other drivers know if it is a good report. For example, maybe there was a live police spot 30 minutes ago, but the officer has since moved on to another location. You can give a “thumbs down” to that marking, so other drivers will know that the spot is safe now. The same is true for an accident or any other kind of thing that may appear on the map.

The button on the left below the map is where you will come to tweak the display to your liking. You can choose what kinds of information is displayed on the screen, which is quite useful. By default, the app only displays information about traps, but you can also set it to display restaurants and other points of interest. You can even turn off certain types of notifications, so if you are not concerned about things like traffic, you can drop that from the field of view.

You can also use the menu on the left to set up how the sounds in the app work. The app supports tons of languages, so whatever you speak, Trapster should be able to handle it. You can also set how the app handles music being played while it is in use.

Trapster07 Trapster Is The Best Way To Avoid A Ticket While Driving [iOS]

You can use the menu to see a list of the nearby traps and alerts, which is a great place to start before you embark on your journey. You can also tap “Recent Traps” to see a list of the items just reported by other users.

You can also search, change the map mode, and view the settings for the app all from within the menu. It features a simple swipe interface that makes navigating through the options quick and easy. Of course, you should pull over before you use these features as driving while using them is unsafe, and the whole purpose of the app is to make your time on the road as safe as possible.

Conclusion

The Trapster mobile service does much more than just show you where the police are hiding. It is a one stop driving companion, and it will most certainly make your time on the road safer and more enjoyable. If you are looking for the perfect app to make the annoying task of driving better, look no further than Trapster.

Does it actually tell you the current speed limit, or does it just tell you how to drive like a moron and avoid punishments for breaking the law? I think if you need this app, you ought to be locked up.

Ryan Dube

Lock me up then, because there are a lot of speed traps around here. Meaning, if you happen to be day-dreaming and take a few seconds longer to slow down after the speed limit drops by 10 mph, there’s a cop sitting right behind the sign waiting to stop you. This app is absolutely awesome – and busts those damn speed traps.

muotechguy

Must be a cultural difference; if you day dreamed at the wheel in the UK, you would probably die or kill some idiot pedestrian (we don’t have jaywalking laws). I know there’s a lot of long open roads in the US though, so I doubt I’d be able to resist the thrill of tearing them either…

Danielle Aeling

@muotechguy like @Ryan Dube said Trapster is for everyone it alerts you to road hazards, traffic, speed traps and more. Check it out!

Does this only work in USA – or limited countries – or globally?

Dave LeClair

It works in most countries, although Trapster does not provide an official list that I can find.

Danielle Aeling

@peter Stewart and @dave leclair we are global!!

I think what I like about this app is the ability to warn other drivers of potential dangerous curves, road hazards, accidents that can slow you down or cause you to be involved. It is not just about “foiling the police” – a very good tool for the commuter!

Dave LeClair

That is definitely a huge part of it. It’s nice to know you are helping fellow drivers. What goes around comes around!

“tap the red button on the bottom of the screen, and click the icon that best matches what you see”

Of course by doing that while you are exceeding the speed limit, you are breaking the law against texting and driving, which has been passed by many states and/or municipalities.

I wonder how current the info on Live Police is. The surest way of avoiding speed traps is to use a radar detector. Of course they ARE illegal in Virginia and some other states but then if you are breaking one law by speeding you might as well break another one by using a radar detector.

muotechguy

The absolutely best way of avoiding speeding fines is to not speed.

Brian Burke

I think I’m too late for this discussion, but in case I’m not…

I used to say the same thing about speeding, but…where I live, there are small towns that lower their speed limits to a point where it’s insane to drive below the limit. They do it for no other reason that to make money. It’s a profit source. Then they hide behind bushes or trees and it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. I do get what you’re saying, and I’m a big rule follower in general. But in cases like this, we’re not talking about danger, we’re talking about, “Oh, you didn’t see the sign 100 feet back where the speed limit dropped in HALF on the same road you’ve been traveling for 5 miles which also coincides with our town limits?”

muotechguy

Yeh, I think this is a cultural difference. Police in the UK are not a profit making organisation!

Dave LeClair

“Of course, you should pull over before you use these features as driving while using them is unsafe, and the whole purpose of the app is to make your time on the road as safe as possible.”

You should definitely not do it while actively driving.

dragonmouth

“You should definitely not do it while actively driving.”

Definitely! But somehow I don’t expect too many users of Trapster to obediently pull over while reporting the presence of police. The entire purpose of the application is to help the user to safely avoid such impediments to quick progress as being stopped by police. /grin/

Guy McDowell

If your $100 radar detector sees a radar gun, their multi-thousand dollar radar gun has already nabbed you.

The only thing a radar detector does is allow you to slow down a bit sooner than the average joe and maybe give you the benefit of the doubt.

dragonmouth

That is why I use a $200 radar detector which has a longer range. /grin/

“The only thing a radar detector does is allow you to slow down a bit sooner than the average joe”
It allows me to slow down soon enough to avoid the trap.

“maybe give you the benefit of the doubt.”
On the contrary, a detector ERASES all doubt. If you get caught speeding and you have a detector, you have no chance of talking your way out of a ticket(s).

Guy McDowell

Whatever you spend on your radar detector, they’ve already got you with their radar.

dragonmouth

Not in 30 years so far. /grin/

Brian Burke

I don’t agree, but I don’t have hard data to back it up. It’s my understanding that they have to train that radar directly on your car, but in cases where they’re pointing it at every car, your detector can pick that up before it’s pointed at you.

@dragonmouth we are working on a few things to make reporting easy and hands free! Stay tuned

It’s available on the better OS too… Android =) Just stirring it up as a joke, but I tried this on Android about a year ago, and the problem I had was people didn’t use it much…so it was pretty much just me posting stuff and I eventually deleted the app. Maybe it’s being used more now. I’d assume the iOS and Android interfaces are using the same back end – will have to give it another try. Thanks for the article.

Guy McDowell

Yes, for community driven apps you need community! Seems like it can take awhile for apps like this to get some traction.

I remember when the gas price websites first came out and you could check the gas prices in places like New York and L.A. Now I can even check the prices in little towns here in Canada.

Danielle Aeling

@guy mcdowell what type of device do you have? On certain devices you can do just that!

Danielle Aeling

@Mark we have LOTS of Android users now. I would test it out again!

What would be neat is if this data were available as an overlay on my GPS.

I drive like the stereotypical old lady, so no worries for me. But people will always try for a loophole.

I just installed the Trapster 5.0 app on my iPhone and was wondering about how often it’s updated? I’m in Ottawa Ontario, also does it update construction slowdown sites?

Danielle Aeling

@bill shattuck our traps are real time so if you come across something that has not been reported please report it for other drivers. Our community is very strong in your area. The app itself is updated about once a month- 2 months.

It’s a Garmin of some type, I don’t know exactly what. I’ll check though, because if we can have an overlay, I can see getting this for my wife. She’s a highly skilled driver, just a little heavy in the foot.

Guy McDowell

BTW Danielle, we love it when company reps come by and answer questions. By we, I mean potential customers. It tells us you’re passionate and listening!
