00 Server roomLooking at the feedback I’ve got from my previous article about building a self-hosted WordPress blog for free How To Setup A Self-hosted Wordpress Blog for Free How To Setup A Self-hosted Wordpress Blog for Free Read More , and from personal experience, I can tell that good free web hosting services are hard to find.

Sure, you can get tons of results from search engines. But most of them turn out to be more annoying than useful. In the end, the results that we can count on are those which come from peer recommendation.

So, to help readers with their web-building experiments (and for my own future references), I tried to compile a list of good easy and free web hosting services. Many of the entries are readers’ recommendations, others are the remainder of the search engine results after filtering out the unqualified ones.

The elimination process

Before revealing the list, let’s look at several factors that made a few services good enough to not be eliminated from the list. Please note that I’ve tried my best not to play favorites, but my personal opinion might differ from others.

First, the features that make these web hosting services easy to use. One service offers different arrangements than the other one. But the ones that we are looking for must have:

  • an installer script (usually Elefante or Fantastico) for automatic installation of WordPress (and other server-side applications)
  • access to a control panel for easier web management
  • the latest version of MySQL and PHP (at least not too old)
  • FTP access to upload and delete files
  • the ability to host our own domain (so we can use the CO.CC address or other personal domain).

Second, the free factors. Most of the time, free is not really free. Some services offer free hosting with ads, some take forever for the activation process, some others require users to make a minimum number of posts in some forum before becoming eligible for the service. The ones that we are looking for should be “as free as possible”.

Ads by Google

Again, the list is compiled with “newbies” and “experimentations” in mind. For better features, bigger disk space, monthly data transfer (bandwidth), access to customer service and technical support, and peace of mind, you should go and get yourself a paid web hosting service. Try Resellers Panel for much cheaper resellers price.

The Survivors

Here are the ones that still stand after the showdown.:) In no particular order, of course. I’ll only mention the disk space and monthly data transfer for quick comparison purposes. Please refer to each service provider’s website for the full list of features as they will be too long to list down here.

Footnotes

I hope this list can help you start your first (WordPress) blog How To Setup A Self-hosted Wordpress Blog for Free How To Setup A Self-hosted Wordpress Blog for Free Read More or website (or park some of the domain names that you have).

I’m sure there are more options lurking somewhere out there, but these are the best that I could find within a few days of searching.

I also found out that some of these services don’t last very long. Many of the links that I found are dead. I guess that’s another side of free services that can’t compete with paid ones.

If you know of other good alternatives, please don’t hesitate to share using the comments below.

If you use 000webhost for some regular website optimizacijaseo.com with few visitors per day, you quickly cause too high server load and after several warnings your site get disabled. My site was just regular WordPress blog with few visitors per day, nothing special.

Ha! Oh please, wotaloadofturd. Since you brought up 110mb.com, awardspace.com, (by the way, that's the spelling, not awarspace.com) and freehostia.com - I've used two of those in the past, so I know from personal experience they don't even come CLOSE to ismywebsite.com, which I've been with over a year now, after finally leaving awardspace.com. 110mb.com isn't accessible in every part of the world, proven by how many times people in various countries have complained that they can't access sites hosted on 110mb.com. Awardspace.com likes to randomly erase files whenever they do "maintenance," which became a big pain in the you-know-what when people like me were hosted with them that had fanlisting sites and suddenly had hundreds of members information erased that you couldn't get back because they didn't offer back ups to free accounts. After I lost members on a fanlisting the first time, I started to put the information on my computer, just so I would still have it when they were suddenly erased again, (which happened NUMEROUS times and this is why I finally left them) but others lost a lot more than I did, and awardspace was useless in their response when a complaint was sent to them about information being erased every month. In addition to acting completely clueless as to how it could have happened, they basically said help would be there if we paid for our hosting with them. Funny, ismywebsite.com has NEVER given me that excuse and has ALWAYS helped me.

Freehostia.com isn't one that I've personally used, so I can't give an opinion there, but from what I've heard, they aren't too bad. However, after just taking a look at what they offer, I see that they have a limit on database space, even with paid accounts, so I don't know. The free accounts get 10MB of database space and that doesn't seem like enough to me, but I could be wrong.

Just for the record, at 4 years, we are older than 110Mb and AwardSpace, though FreeHostia is about the same age, and Zetta Hosting Solutions ltd (the company behind AwardSpace) was founded as a paid host way back in 2002.

If anyone is just getting started and needs to host a small personal website, those are all great alternatives and much faster than our service to get set up. What we offer isn't really comparable to those services because it's a full featured premium hosting, and we target larger websites. We don't sell upgrades. There's no 'paid' version. That's because, what could we add to improve it? If there's something we could add, we'll do it.

It's a different model. You place advertising and that pays for the hosting. So you don't have to pay a dime, and because you placed effective advertising (which of course you did), then we can keep increasing the resources as your website grows, and the revenue increases to pay for them, so it's unlimited flexibility. This also gives us the incentive to help your website succeed, since high traffic sites bring in a lot more earnings.

And before anyone gets mad, no I'm not carrying home a bag of gold every day. We barely cover expenses, and what is left goes to get better servers, so we can host more people, or to buy free domains for the clients who most helped to make that happen. It's only a dream I have to one day be able to sustain myself off something like this.

    Point well made Noel.

When "regular paid" hosting charges little as it is...it's a shame that there are "loosers" out there thinking that things ARE FREE...and pay nothing forever.

Kind of like going to the bank and raiding their candy bowl.

Resources do cost money and someone HAS to pay for them. Unfortunately, slugs get in there and suck the system dry.

    You know what I mean...

    VERY GOOD POINT!

Contributions are exactly what they are...if you CAN AFFORD to contribute...please do so!

free web hosting is the only solution if you make sites for clients who don't pay either. Believe it or not, there are so many people these days who don't pay even the host cost of $100 per year. Not even the $10 for the domain. How we designers will pay for food... we don't live in china...

I personally like Blinkweb,Viviti and Weebly.
Blinkweb and Weebly are best for salesmen and businessmen.
You can display your products there. You can even put Google AdSense in Weebly.
And there are no forced ads.
Viviti's good for personal sites like blogs and all,but not very good for business.
Blinkweb's blog system is the best in my opinion, then Weebly's and then Viviti's.
In my opinion,Blinkweb is the best, followed by Weebly and then Viviti.

    Yeah,

I make no claims about our signup process being fast or easy. A complex signup like ours helps majorly reduce incidences of spam and abuse. It offers no real advantage to host the tiny personal homepage somebody wants to slap together in 5 minutes, show his friends, then outright abandon later.

No. We target small businesses. We target community organizations. We target the confident, skilled individual building an online reputation. We target new ideas. We want clients who will remain for months, found their business/organization/idea off our hosting, and then one day, IF they feel up to it, perhaps give back and help us to help more people.

There was a theory I was once told, but it only works if you give GENUINELY and without expecting reward.

"You get back twice what you give."

For me, it's become law. And so far, it's proven itself. Time and time again.

That's why our hosting is free.

    You know...
I was looking for a hosting site and "googled" free hosting sites...

I came up with results...one of the (a few from the top results) was IsMyWebsite.com.

I said "what the heck, I need to get something going on, so I joined the site.

It asked me to give a brief description on what the site would have and aslo mentioned that the more I stated, the faster the reply for them to accept me as a member (is that the right term??), so...I said that the site was going to promote my band and possibly have a calendar of our gigs. THAT'S IT!

Mind you I was in NO HURRY...so about a week later...(Matt, correct me if I am mistaken) Matt sent me an email with more questions regarding the site...so I answered his questions and told him that I am just looking for an information HOMEBASE for those wanting to know where we'll be playing...

And...at the end of the questionnaire...I mentioned to Matt that if my site was not enough for him to host, i would understand and leave it at that.

He pretty much IMMEDIATELY replied with "you are already on" and he just wanted to know a little more than what I gave him in the questionnaire.

I only hope the best for the narcissistic (only kidding Matt)individual that HELPED ME WITH MY QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU...

Maybe "all these zillion" ismywebsite.com people are posting because they're happy with the service. Including me, which is why I've decided to post here, too. That must mean that I'm another spammer or false friend.

I've been with awardspace.com in the past, I've been with freehostia.com and 000webhost.com, and now I'm with ismywebsite.com.

I can't say anything about the rest listed above, because I never tried those, but since I signed up with ismywebsite.com 8 months ago, I've been extremely pleased with the service in general, with its staff, etc., and for *me* personally, it's the best host I've had.

Matt, I do have to disagree with you about something, though: "It’s a pain to get in, but once you’re in most people would agree it is the best experience out there." I'm not sure what you mean by it's "a pain to get in," but I don't remember it being a pain for me, unless something changed in the last 8 months and you made it more difficult for new clients.

Oh, and Allan? Interesting that you think Matt is a narcissistic jerk, because I've never seen that side of him. I also think it's interesting that most of the people talking crap about IMW don't know how to spell or use proper grammar, either. Maybe *they're* all the same person.

As someone who is actually hosted there, I'm going to state some facts:

    - The owner gave us the link and said IF, get that part? - IF - we loved IsMyWebsite, to mention it. He didn't promise rewards, gifts, whatever you want to call it.

    - They don't put ads "all over your site" as Robomaster claimed. We, the webmasters, are required to place ONE ad on our sites.

    - Donations are donations, that's why they're called - let's all say it together now - Donations.

By the way, I've made one donation so far and this is the only hosting company I've donated to, because it's the only one I've wanted to give a donation to.

    - In the middle of the only downtime I've experienced since being with them, which affected their main site and all of the people hosted at IMW, as well, (so they were busy trying to get things working again) I sent support an email; and within a short while, I received a reply to let me know that they were working to fix it. I never even received that quick of a reply from a paid host!

How about this? Instead of leaving negative comments if you've never had a site hosted with IMW, try them yourself first. At least then, if you find that you don't like them, your negative comments will be valid.

Lastly, I've also noticed that Matt himself has asked people on here to elaborate on their negative comments, has made offers, etc., and strangely enough, not a single one has responded. All bark and no bite, boys? Sure looks that way.

P.S. You can reach my site, hecilopter.com, with or without the "www."

And, FWIW, I just donated ten bucks to IMW. Required? Nope. "Strongarm" or "guilt" tactics? Nope. Just a simple, quick, straitforward request. This is the first time I've felt able to help out. This kind of donation helps the many community, church, poor third-world, &tc. sites that have chosen IMW. And, even "regular poor folks," as I've been at times! What comes around goes around...or, maybe it stops at you. No biggie. The only requirement is that you post a small ad.

Ah, but the opportunity--if you're so inclined--is there, too. To help others (if you can and are inclined), to join a vibrant and growing community on the forums, where you'll get REAL help with problems as you try to build and grow your site, to have THE BEST service possible, from folks like Matt who truly give a crap, not just lip service...well, I'll stop preaching now. It's real. You may ignore IMW, but it's truly your--and OUR!--loss.

I'm an "IsMyWebsite" user, as of May, and am just now getting my site completed. You can check it out--almost ready to go--here:

    hecilopter.com

No, we are not spammers. Yes, we are individuals. Yes, we love IMW, and here's why:

After having used 000webhost, and having a horrible experience, in terms of NEVER getting feedback about problems I submitted service tickets about, except for robot responses that were responding to totally unrelated issues, and then getting slammed on their froums by kiddie mods for pointing out this porblem after a major DNS attaqk on all their servers, lasting over a week, I went with IMW.

Instead of bots, I got a real person--Matt, whom you've met above. He's not only been great--a real "human being," even better than a mere "person," come to think of it--and also a guy I truly respect for his integrity, drive to deliver instant-service, ambition (in the best sense, in terms of hope for his service to make a difference), intelligence, and, again, humanity.

We tend to find ourselves chatting via email a couple of times a week, usually on subjects unrelated to IMW or hosting or whatever, if we have the time. In this sense, we have become friends, although we've never met. Won't get this from other hosting providers, guaranteed.

Now, maybe this is not something you want. O.K. Me? I'm a TQM (Total Quality Management) guy, and to me, Matt exemplifies this holistic sensibility. The personal touch certainly is "gravy" I very much enjoy.

From a service perspective: I just got an email from Matt regarding a configuration problem he solved that I didn't even know I had. Here is a paste of that personal email:

    Hey Will,

    How's your hosting?

I found a configuration error with your package, so I've now restored the proper settings. Should you need more of any resource, just let me know.

Your cPanel should be completely working and properly set up at this time. If you experience any problems whatsoever, please let me know so they can be resolved.

I'll be coming by your site soon to check your ad placement. The address I check is 'http://hecilopter.com/', so make sure your website is accessible from that address, with ads placed based on our Advertising Rules (available at http://www.ismywebsite.com/?p=adrules). Let me know if you have any trouble generating or placing advertising on your website.

Thanks for choosing our hosting. Let me know if you ever need anything else or have any troubles.

PS: We miss you on the forums! (forum.ismywebsite.com/)

If you check out my site, you'll see a small (150 X 180) ad for IMW, which I am HAPPY to display--just as I'm happy to take the time to post here, to promote IMW. Frankly, at some point I may decide to pay for hosting (just doing my part) and plan to STILL LEAVE THE AD. There are several options for ads (that 150 X 180 ad is actually expanded to 150 X 215 by me, to match the contours of the rightmost sidebar, but could have just been a 150 X 150 square ad with no background color...).

Look, we aren't a bunch of bots, spammers, or brainwashed folks, or even "one guy," as somebody mentioned.

    We're real.

    We love IMW.

You ureally will get a PERSONAL level of attention, according to your needs and desires. If all you want is instant service, in terms of communications, fine. If you WANT more, Matt's a great guy, and will help you any way he can, in my extensive experience. I'm a n00b, and his personal emails have helped me with my site, and I just enjoy emailing him from time to time. He's a great person. The forums are great and helpful.

Man, what more could anyone want?

Come check it out. Then decide.

Meanwhile, I can't imagine a list of seven without IMW being on it. (Why limit it to seven, anyway?)

    My 2 cents.

    Very real.

Just checked out "Ismywebsite." They put ads all over your site - don't even bother checking it out. Piece of junk.

    • Dan
      October 24, 2009 at 10:08 am

That's really weird and scary. I've actually tried different computers (from different IP's) and I have no such problem. I've gone to my site and the only ad I see is the one and only that IMW requires (again, from other computers).

However, in their defense, It's not a piece of junk. The ads you might be seeing is probably one's way of people getting paid to advertise on their site and not an IMW issue.

Did you mention that to Matt? He may know more about that.

    • Matt M
      October 28, 2009 at 11:38 pm

      Hi Robomaster,

That's odd. We don't put any ads. We let webmasters place them, and even then we make exceptions in some cases.

I'm guessing, and this is only a guess, you left the default page (which does have ads on it) in place. So, if you log into cPanel, and open public_html in File Manager, you can either edit the 'index.php' or delete it and create your own 'index.html' or 'index.html'. You can also make this change via FTP.

That being said, I've no idea what website is yours, and we're all glad to help you out if you mail us, but I haven't got anything from you, so I can't help you.

If that's not the issue, I recommend getting your computer checked for adware. It's been known to cause ads and/or pop-ups to appear on certain websites when surfing the web, even if they aren't hardcoded into the website. We NEVER use pop-ups, so if you see and pop-ups, it's something wrong at your end.

Please help me help you, and provide me a bit more information.

Thanks for being real and helpful.
Best of luck with any and everything you do man!!

P.S. I'll keep posting here as long as it take to get the message across!

    WHAT?!?!

    You Forgot to Mention ismywebsite.com

They are awesome, the admin is extremely active, fixing bugs and upgrading your account on the fly. Running Low on Space? He will give you more space before you notice. You only need 1 ad per page! Some pages are exempt from this rule so its even less work!!

I can't believe you didn't mention this great site...

I'm surprised and taken back on some of the negative comments in here. I consider myself as being "very skeptical" and having reservations of "free".

As mentioned above, you DON'T have to DONATE. I'm sure the support with "IsMyWebsite" is above many others claiming the same. No ONE IS HOLDING A GUN TO YOUR HEAD to send money to IMW! Put the shoe on your foot, to host a site for FREE?!

And for those who who have a big corporate attitude with a volkswagen budget, go pay for yours. Glad you're not there consuming the bandwidth.

A little knowledge of HTML, etc will get you a long way...if you want someone to hold your hand, then you'll have to wait a day or two for someone to stop from their REAL JOBS and help you out.

I totally believe that IsMyWebsite has extended itself to EVERYONE the best way they can.

Placing a "little" ad semi, inconspicuously is NO big deal as far as I'm concerned.

Geocities wasn't that bad either with the ads on the side, but I think me being in control of the placement is very nice of them to do it this way.

These guys are not bleeding hearts from what I've encountered, and believe me, I would be the first to bail out from a BS situation.

My website is as simple as they get, and yes..I look forward in sending a couple bucks. I know there are REAL people behind that cyber wall.

I can't believe the crap some people say...are you really THAT dissatisfy with IMW? Wow.

It's a nice list but as several other people above me have said... where's IsMyWebsite?

I've been using them for two of my sites for over a year and couldn't be happier. Of the few free hosting sites that didn't disable a script I had been trying to host, they have been by FAR the most reliable.
My other website is just a community forum. In the process of setting up that forum I probably tried every free CMS software out there before settling on one. All of them installed and were supported. I'm very appreciative of the file manager system they have as it saves me a lot of time with permissions and moving files ^^

My Name is Tom Collins and I am the Support Representative for IsMyWebsite in the UK.

I am not going to be biased towards IsMyWebsite, but it is a pretty good host!

@Allan - OK, there may be errors here and there but what do you expect, Matthew is human, and humans make mistakes. Donations are not required, thats why it is a DONATION. If you donate, you get rewards ETC as you are helping to keep the host alive, can't see nothing wrong with that. We also offer FREE Support and FREE Upgrades upon request, can you think of any other free host that does that?

      Hi Mary,

Have you used our hosting before, or are you taking this from Allan's post above?

Donation is a big part of how we support this hosting, however I make every attempt to make sure I'm not bothering anyone.

To this date, I have received not one complaint about the way I have attracted donations, so if people will not complain, how can I guess they have a problem?

Seriously. Let me know if you have a problem. That goes for anyone who's ever used our service. I hate silence!

Ismywebsite is pretty crap. The host is a narcissistic jerk who thinks he has the best hosting system in world when it is just some bullshit reseller accounts that he really does not know a lot about anything. His apparent free hosting is plagued with please donate and shit like that.

      Hi Allan,

I'm very sorry for whatever caused you this attitude. You're right that I do believe we have the best hosting for most people, and I base this belief on the simple fact that if our hosting were not the best, I'd fix it. Do you have a problem with this mindset?

If you've had any problems with our hosting, I've not heard about them, so I do invite you to please let me know so I can fix them. What website did you host with us?

      Hoping for your reply.

    Hey we are not spammers!
    I can guarantee that!
And to prove to you that I, myself am not a spammer, you can go visit my site hosted by ismywebsite -

    http://mvl.ismywebsite.com/blog

Is it because all of what we're saying sounds too good to be true? Well, believe it then, cuz it's true!

Matt treats us all professionally and responds quickly to whatever my site needs. In fact, to put a small ad for him on my site is not enough to repay him for his kindness and professionalism. And I think others feel the same way that's why we all respond quickly here when we found out that Ismywebsite wasn't included in the list.

Why don't you guys give it a try before you think this is just spamming?

Enough said... going back to my site now...

i dont think that all these ppl are spammers.. im kinda surprised there's only IMW ppl on here commenting :P

    Hi All,

I am the administrator of IsMyWebsite. I want to say there are a lot of comments because I have showed our clients this page. Sorry if you think they are spam, but no. These are actual clients of our service.

It is very rare we have dissatisfied clients unless they didn't create a website at all or got tired of waiting for the acceptance process. (Sometimes it takes up to 2 weeks to be accepted.) In total, there are just a couple negative reviews on the entire internet over our entire 3 year history, and both happened during the brief period my friend was running the site.

Why do I say we are better than all these services? Because we don't get pushed around by service providers. We currently have deals with several different companies throughout the US, UK, and Canada. (7 to be exact.) These companies are all a unique mix of attributes, between reliability, security, and features. If you are ever dissatisfied, we'll help you switch between our network.

Do not come to our hosting unless you are serious about your site's success. You waste your time otherwise. We are not designed for tiny personal sites, but websites with huge growth potential.

One final thing to show you is this link:
    http://ismywebsite.wordpress.com/2008/06/07/190-donation-not-kidding/

It's a client who signed up to use our service as a backup only and ended up leaving one of the largest and most successful paid hosting companies and donating to keep us going. Why? Well, this really large company, still the second most popular website globally, had an error in their billing system, and the client website got terminated permanently and in entirity.

So yeah, if you want more stories, go here:
    http://www.ismywebsite.com/?p=story1

If you want to ask me any questions, I've got an email address on the site, or send a PM to 'Azoundria'.

Anyways, if you want to continue to think this is spam, but never try our hosting yourself, that's your decision. Mine is to provide the best possible hosting, and let our clients speak for themselves.

That is all I have to say on this.

(Doesn't matter I too searched for more than 6 years to find a real good one)
      2. You don't like to hear the truth ??
(Thats bad - shame on persons like that)

I agree with you - on the first view - people can think its Spam.
But believe - it is not. If you have any questions:
      here is my E-Mail: diplaselke@gmail.com

Dear Mr. or. Mrs. willemijns I dont need to hide my real name.
I am a german engeneer living in Paraguay. In this country the people have great problems to find hosting services because online banking and PayPal not is accessible for normal people. The prices for paid hosters here are up to 10$ per month for 50 MB. (mostly without ftp, mysql, ....)

Before you use words like this: "These comment article begins to sucks with this ismywebsite spammer....."
you first should try this service.
Maybe later on you too are a "SPAMMER"

Set up on Freewebhostia.com, domain name was transferred by CO.CC in about 20 minutes, they emailed me my WordPress setup password and I was in, up and running within another 5. Will be customizing my theme and posting over the remaining weekend.

Seem to be seeing a lot of spam for "IsMyWebsite" in here (or is it really that good? Can't really tell from the site at a glance; the fact that they require an ad on every page is a real turn-off.)

    • Matt M
      October 4, 2009 at 10:16 pm

      Hi Doc,

If you're looking to get in and set up in 5 minutes, we are not the host you want. We mainly deal with larger long-term clients, and personally accept every website that comes through our doors.

It's a pain to get in, but once you're in most people would agree it is the best experience out there.

I just want to mention that nobody is receiving any reward for posting their opinion of our service here. We have no affiliate program or anything of that sort. So you can be sure these are genuine replies here.

As for the advertising, it's quite customizable, so basically anything you can do with your own advertising is possible here. And in the future, we'll be instituting a system so you can buy webmaster products like domain with the revenue. You can set the ads to just be AdSense if you want (and set the colours), or just a banner link to our hosting.

I can help you integrate the ads if you need any help, so just mail me on the site.

Tried 000webhost.com - their Fantastico AutoInstaller is "down for upgrades" (apparently since January 2009, according to some of their own forum posts); their tech support "volunteers" seem to love upselling to paid accounts instead of fixing the problems (I couldn't get a database connection with a self-install of WordPress). I'm just giving up.

No gifts were given or promised, but I did pass around this link. We actually have that many satisfied clients.

I know it's hard to believe in this day and age. Anyways, we can settle this. Sign up and see for yourself. If you manage to host a website with us, and our service sucks, you can complain then.

How about, I'll pay for 3 months hosting for you with any other company up to $5/mo. But you must try us for 1 month and give us full feedback of every problem you face. And if you're wrong, would you be willing to bet a $15 donation?

"Ok, so I guess you know nothing about good hosting sites. Ismywebsite.com is by far the best I have ever used! All they require is a summary of what your site is going to be about. And there is not really a limit to the space you get. If your site grows, then your allowed space grows. Plus the community is very active as well as the admins. They are very interested in your success and well being and I'm sure they would not have a problem helping you with any questions. I know this because I have had web help from them. I highly recommend trying this service. Besides, what do you have to lose? Its free! =]" Ok, so this is the post I just made. ha ha ha ... this is the awful top 7 hosting I've seen in my life. From 2 years I'm a hosting tester and I can say all of them are awful except 000Webhost.com; the servers speed is very slow and it takes more than 30 seconds to load an ordinary page and that should be almost instant; and the uptime isn't great.

    I can recommend:

IsMyWebsite.com - they have several nodes from different top resellers and a great suport; but they are asking to add an ads on your website(you can choose the size and the colors of the ad); the uptime and servers speed is very good - see http://ismywebsite.wordpress.com/
So if you are nothing against a small ads on your website, ismywebsite can be on of the best

110Mb.com - it is a great free hosting company without ads but if you need mysql you must to pay 10$(only one time). They don't use cPanel

ilive.ro - it isn't so great because of the database limit(only 5M) and for website activation you must to wait several days but the servers speed and the uptime is good. Can't use .co.cc domains (only standards domains .com .net .org etc). They don't use cPanel

000Webhost.com - another great free hosting company but to activate your website they're asking to install a small software on you computer to get your computer details. So I'm a little concern about privacy.

    Hello everyone,
I think there is an other freehoster who is worth to be told about here.
    ismywebsite.com
A nearly unknown freehoster. Since 2003 I look for a good freehoster - last year I found.
You can open in your account as many websites as you like, without forced ads, normally you get 100 MB - but if you need more - you get more. Only a short mail.
But the most impressive thing is the support. The support is personally - not automated. If you need help - you get help!!!
For me this is the most important thing of all.
My opinion: the support is not 10/10 it is 12/10.

There's more to a hosting service than space and bandwidth, especially if you plan to use something such as Drupal which requires changing some php permissions or something as I recall (don't quote me on it)

  69. pceasies
    September 30, 2009 at 2:32 pm

I second Byethost, very nice and has all the features listed. Webs and Yola (and Weebly) aren't really web hosts per say, they are more of an application that allows one to setup a website easily. This is more of host what ever you want. A server with storage, bandwidth, and public access from the web.

    • Mick D
      October 2, 2009 at 11:02 am

Byethost is a sham! I cancelled my account with them yesterday in fact, after four months because they keep changing limits down -- a php script that I use got to the point that it would not even run because they kept lowering the php execution time until it got down to 1 second -- what kind of script are you supposed to use with a 1 second execution time? NONE! I changed my site about two months back when they first started doing this <<>. I'm glad I did!

I changed to ismywebsite.com and am darn glad that I did. The site offers a lot of things that others don't, it has the ultimate friendly user community, super-fast answers to any problems you may have, tech support is off the charts! On a scale of 1 to 10, I give IsMyWebsite a 15!

There's just not enough I can say about it: PHP, Perl, Ruby, Cron, CGI, Fantastico -- it's all there.

If you're not using IsMyWebsite, you're in the Stone Ages....

  70. chalmers
    September 30, 2009 at 7:25 pm

I use x10hosting.com. It has all the features required for this list and I've had no problems with it and am host three domains there. The only stipulation is that you have to log onto their forums once every two weeks or they'll suspend your account.

    • gentry
      October 17, 2009 at 1:49 pm

The X10 people lied profusely about their features as advertised on freewebspace.net. Other hosts there apparently do the same. The sky's the limit until you sign up. That's why I was glad to find this page where actual users are trading their experiences. Thanks to the author for this article.

  71. Dave Drager
    September 30, 2009 at 1:43 pm

I am definitely a bit biased here, since I own a (paid) web site hosting company.

The free business model doesn't work. The idea behind running a free website hosting company is that you upsell your brand and products. It is a marketing ploy, and not something that is sustainable. Let's say you start offering free web hosting. At first it will be great, because there are only several users. After it becomes more popular, more and more users sign up, spammers join the club, and other folks who look for free support along with their web hosting. It will eventually bog the server down and it will make the web hosting company be known for poor service and performance.

So as you can see, it is not a sustainable business model. You might see good service and support at the beginning but it is impossible to sustain. That is why you see many of these companies are 'fly by night'. If you insist upon using a free service, just remember you get what you pay for.

Nevertheless, thanks for the list Jeffry, would be interesting to see how many are still in existence after 6 months to a year!

Does your company offer curl support? My automation (curl) script requires I write a file to the server space.

      Thanks!

You mention a valid point. As a business, free hosting is not very profitable, but as a way to change the world and make a huge difference it is one of the most rewarding things you can do.

I may not make millions, but I change that many lives each day. And that is why I have been running a free host for 3 years. When I founded there weren't really any of the services mentioned here, and I've watched as the industry adjusted to new standards, which was great to see.

So if you want a service that's here to stay, check us out.

You what you pay for is the biggest con ever. It simply is not true in most cases.

I agree quite a lot with Dave Drager. I offered free shared hosting some time ago, and it got my website stuck because of the spammers. What I did was to provide free hosting to entrepreneurs only and very cheap and unlimited services to general public. If you want to give us a try, we are at your services at softdev.com.ve

    no love for Byethost.com?
    - 5500MB storage
    - 200GB bandwidth
    - 50 addon/parked/subdomains (I find the subdomains really useful for testing out CMSes or hosting test sites)
    - 50 MySQL databases

Seems better than almost all the hosts listed, but doesn't get a look in.

000webhost is rather limited to a one size fits all basic blog template. The fantastico installer for things like Drupal, Joomla, etc, is not available.

Xtreemhost is my favorite free hosting provider!
They offer everything you need: free site builder, free automatic script installer, php, mysql, sockes, .htaccess, custom 404 error pages...

Yes, 000Webhost.com is great - and they offer free sitebuilder from SiteReptile.com, what makes them even better! :)

    Hey,

I'd like to add one more name to your list of free web hosting service provider and that's LimeDomains. In their free hosting plan, they give some great bandwidth, disk space etc. I have my 3 websites running on their server and the experience has been really satisfying so far.

LimeDomains' service also includes poor technical support, extremely slow FTP, and tons of downtime. Angela might have had a great experience in September 2009 before LD went 'big', but in 11/2009 they started promoting their free service more widely and the results have been disastrous. Here's what I believe you can expect from LimeDomains:
      - Technicians who have a tenuous grasp of English and even less competence with their own technology
      - Downtime weekly, sometimes daily
      - No warnings of attempted upgrades or other maintenance involving downtime
      - No information about past downtimes or future expectations

LimeDomains doesn't seem to understand that their free service is a sample of their paid service. I certainly wouldn't consider paying them a single cent for the crap I've received. I'll be moving my site (which does not have demanding needs) to another host this month or next.

So in short: LimeDomains is suck. Avoid like plague.

If you really want to blog and can't afford a host, use a hosted service. WordPress.com is free and hosted.

Have been hosting many sites in 000webhost. It has been awfully slow recently.

Thanks for the great list. Thinking of switching to xtreemhost. Someone please post your experience with xtreemhost.

    Thanks once again!

Also, 000webhost has cronjob feature which many freehosts lack.

That was great to look at. I chose Xtreemhost and started my wordpress blog a week ago. I think that is the best and the support team helps you in all the issues.

FreeHostia, however, is much faster and more stable than 000, because from my experience, 000's hosting often becomes awfully slow, and their FTP access is just one big and slow "timeout" :(

  85. PienaZupa
    September 29, 2009 at 4:28 pm

FreeHostia blows, since they don't allow any connections to the outside (example: RSS feeds in WP Dashboard don't work), and ATM the WP in their autoinstaller is 2.8.2, not the newest one.

Yea, I just realized that. It stinks. 000webhost is the best if you take that into consideration.

I like 000webhost and freehostia, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to allow you to host a curl script that writes files to your server space.

I'm using curl to do some automatic searching/parsing, and then save the results to a file. Everything works fine if I run it on my local MoWeS server, but not when using a commercial hosting site.

Perhaps there's some small difference in configuration between curl running on a local server on a commercial web server, but if not, anyone know of a hosting provider that allows full curl support?

Holy cow. I just spent an hour trying to research different web hosts, a search that begun after reading your initial post. And I click back into Google Reader and here you were thinking of me.

    Thanks guys!

Check for opinions on these and other hosts at mywot.com and freewebspace.net/free/Free-webhosting Many times they offer gigs of space but are very unfair and even fraudulent after you started to use their service.

If you use 000webhost for some regular website optimizacijaseo.com with few visitors per day, you quickly cause too high server load and after several warnings your site get disabled. My site was just regular WordPress blog with few visitors per day, nothing special.
