Hi Ryan,

Nice evaluation of some of the top apartment sites. I agree that Apartmentguide.com has a great search and Move.com is very slick. We have made a lot of improvements at RentalsOnline.com but still have a ways to go to catch up. We are also finishing up a new site called ApartmentPublisher.com that will offer a great search and lots of local content for renters to learn about an area before moving there.

I really enjoyed your article. All the different apartment sites offer something a little different. I really love this site called Rent Jungle. It's an apartment search engine that takes results from the top apartment sites and puts them on one convenient page. It also has some neat features that I haven't seen on the other sites like a market trend guide and a tool that lets you see if you're paying too much for your place. Here's the link if you want to check it out!

Hi Ryan,

MakeUseOf has covered PadMapper Map-Based Apartment Search a couple of times before, but I just wanted to mention it for consideration if you ever compile another one of these lists again. It covers the entire US (largely major cities, but lots of smaller cities have listings also), and has an easy-to-use map-based browsing and search interface, with responsive filters, which make it go from showing a bit of everything to focusing on just what you want to see.

I hope you'll check it out if you haven't seen it yet.

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for the good words. Given that your interests overlap with our technology, we wonder if you can review our products in more detail?

Please let me know (pr at cazoodle.com), and I can send you more information, including, ofcourse, our plan for national coverage.

Govind, thanks for your comment.

I checked out your site and I have to say it's very well designed. It's interesting to see that you fill a specific niche of providing people who are searching for apartments in the most populated areas/cities of the country with extensive listings. Great work on that. The only drawback, as far as I can see, is that the vast remaining part of the country is left without any listings. However, considering the number of apartment hunters looking for rentals in the areas that your app focuses on - I think you're filling an important niche at Cazoodle. Great site - keep up the good work.

You should really check out Cazoodle's apartment search engine:

http://apartments.cazoodle.com

For your 3rd criteria, #results, cazoodle has far greater apartments than any other sites. Say, for Palo Alto, Cazoodle has over 600 apartments, compared to rent.com's 11, apartments.com's 6, apartmentguide's 16, move.com's 7, etc.

For your 2nd criteria, Cazoodle actually provides very rich features to filter/sort the results assisted using map overlays, etc.

For your 1st criteria, not only Cazoodle links to original landlord Website to see all the pictures, it also gives a mashup of streetview, to virtually tour the surroundings of the apartment.

Try it, and let us know.

Hi Mark - thanks for your comment. Keep in mind, the article that I quoted never claimed to be based on traffic (neither did this article) - the claim is the number of times users "checked availability." I'll quote the article itself here for a bit more clarity on what that means:

"The rankings are based on the number of times renters “check availability” online per property. When rental prospects check availability through VaultWare powered websites, they see current rental pricing and availability versus filling out an email form to request this information. Checking availability is typically the first step in the rental process after viewing the property online."

Thanks again,
-Ryan

Hi,
The original article you quote is based on the largest sites that have integrated a particular vendor's software, and is not based on traffic. Using any Compete, ComScore, Hitwise or whatever your favorite traffic measurement tool, you'll find that the top 5 apartment sites in Jan'09 were:
1) Rent.com
2) Apartments.com
3) MyNewPlace.com
4) Forrent.com
5) ApartmentGuide.com

Thanks,
Mark Moran
